Please be aware that a few of MITAGS’ training programs have special pre‐requisites or courserequirements. Therefore,all studentsareasked toreviewthe following informationprior to theirvisittotheInstitute. AutomaticRadarPlottingAids(ARPA)All Automatic Radar Plotting Aids students must possess a valid/current U.S. Coast Guard Radarcertificate. Courseparticipantsareencouragedtopracticeradarplottingpriortothestartofclass.For reference, Real TimeMethods of Radar Plotting by Max Carpenter and Wayne Waldo is thesuggestedtextbook.Thepublicationcanbepurchasedviathefollowing:

MITAGS’ShipStore:(410)859‐5700,Extension7405.Studentsareencouragedtobringtheirownnavigationtools(triangles,dividers,etc.)toclass.Azipod‐Kamewa‐2(AZIPOD‐KAM‐2)andAzipod‐Kamewa‐3(AZIPOD‐KAM‐3)The two or three day Azipod/Kamewa course is designed for experienced shiphandlers. Courseparticipants are encouraged to complete the Basic and Advanced Shiphandling courses prior toenrollinginthisprogram.Pleasenotethatthiscoursemayhaveeitheramorningorafternoonstarttime.Themorningsimulatorshiftmaystartasearlyas0730andtheafternoonshiftmayendaslateas2100.Therefore,studentsshouldcontacttheAdmissionsCoordinatorpriortothestartofclasstoverifythecourseconveningtimes.BasicandAdvancedFireFighting(FF‐BADV)ThiscoursecombinesBasicFireFightingandAdvancedFireFightingintoafive‐dayclass.TheBasicportionofthecourseincludesclassroomtraining,followedby“hands‐on”useoftheequipment. Itwill enable the deck officer to plan for, and combat, onboard fires and emergencies. Actual firefightingisdoneusingavarietyofequipmentandtechniques. ThisportionofthecoursemeetstherequirementsreflectedinSTCW‐95,SectionA‐VI/1,TableA‐VI/1‐2andPartCof46CFRforthebasicfirefightingcomponentofanoriginallicense.TheAdvancedportionofthecoursemeetstheSTCWrequirementsbyprovidingtheattendeewithinstructioninfirefightingtechniquesandcontroloffirefighting operations, with special emphasis on organization, tactics, and command functions. Theadvancedportionof thecoursesatisfies theSTCW‐95AdvancedFireFightingrequirements,whicharedetailedinPartCof46CFR,andarerequiredforallindividualsraisingtheirlicense.Participation in this program can be hazardous to the health of an individual with circulatoryproblems, heart ailments, allergies (whichmay be triggered by smoke, heat, or physical activity),respiratoryproblems(suchasemphysemaorasthma),orotherhealthproblems.Course participants are urged to consult with their personal physician should any question existregardinghisorherabilitytoparticipateintheprogram.Individualswhofeeltheprogrammaybehazardoustotheirhealthshouldnotapplyfor,orparticipatein,thisprogram.MITAGSdoesnotprovideinsuranceofanytypeforparticipantsinthisprogram. BasicSafetyTraining(BST‐PST,PST‐PSSR,BST‐MED‐ELAID,BST‐FF‐FPFF)TheBasicSafetyTrainingcourseiscomprisedofthefollowingfourelements:

BST‐PST:PersonalSurvivalTechniques.

BST‐PSSR:PersonalSafetyandSocialResponsibility.

BST‐MED‐ELAID:MedicalFirstAid.

BST‐FF‐FPFF:FireFightingandFirePrevention.Please note that each of the four components are offeredseparately. Courseparticipantswillberequiredtoparticipateinrigorousactivities, includingexercises intheswimmingpoolandatthefirefightingfacility.Trainingwillinclude,butisnotlimitedto,thefollowingactivities:

Jumpingfromaheightofapproximatelyonemeter.

Swimming a distance of approximately twenty feet whilewearingapersonalflotationdeviceorimmersionsuit.

Staying afloat for approximately oneminutewithout the use of a personal flotation device orimmersionsuit.

Deploying and entering a life‐raft, and righting a capsized life‐raft, while wearing a personalflotationdeviceorimmersionsuit.

Conducting search and rescue of simulated personnel casualties weighing approximately onehundredandfiftypoundsfromanenclosedspace/smoke‐fireenvironmentwhilewearingbreathingapparatusandprotectiveclothing.

Extinguishingfireswithandwithouttheaidofabreathingapparatus.Thiswill include moving quickly and climbing up and down ladders whileholdingfirefightingequipment(suchasheavyhoses).

Bending,stooping,lifting,andturningrealorsimulatedpatients.

PerformingCardiopulmonaryResuscitation(CPR)onamanikin.Participation in thisprogramcanbehazardousto thehealthofan individualwith circulatory problems, heart ailments, allergies (which may be triggered by smoke, heat, orphysicalactivity),respiratoryproblems(suchasemphysemaorasthma),orotherhealthproblems.Therefore, course participants are urged to consult with their personal physician should anyquestion exist regardinghis or her ability toparticipate in theprogram. BasicStability(STB‐BAS)There are nopre‐requisites forMITAGS’Basic Stability course. However, course participantswillbenefit fromprior knowledge of basicmath and physics. In addition, students are encouraged tobringtheirownscientificcalculatortoclass.BridgeResourceManagement(BRM)MITAGS’BridgeResourceManagementcoursemayhaveeitheramorningorafternoonstart time.Themorningsimulatorshiftmaystartasearlyas0700andtheafternoonshiftmayendas lateas2300. Therefore, courseparticipants shouldcontactMITAGS’AdmissionsCoordinatorprior to thestartofclasstoverifythecourseconveningtimes.BridgeResourceManagement/EmergencyShiphandlingforPilots(BRMP‐EMR)TheBridgeResourceManagement/EmergencyShiphandling forPilots coursehasbeen specificallydesigned formarine pilots. The coursemay have either amorning or afternoon start time. Themorningsimulatorshiftmaystartasearlyas0700andtheafternoonshiftmayendaslateas2300.Studentsshouldcontact theAdmissionsCoordinatorprior to thestartofclass toverify thecoursestartandfinishtime.CelestialNavigation(C‐NAV)Studentsattendingtheten‐dayCelestialNavigationcoursewillberequiredtoparticipateinseveralevening study sessions. In addition, course attendees are encouraged to bring navigation tools(triangles,dividers,etc.)andascientificcalculatorwiththemtoclasseachday.ConfinedSpaceEntry(CSE‐AAES)Students attending the Confined Space Entry course are urged to bring steel toed shoes forwearduring the practical exercises. Please note that some of the practical exercises are conductedoutdoors,sostudentsshouldbringseasonalclothingthatisappropriateforworkinginadirty,wetenvironment.AttendeeswillberequiredtosignaConsentandReleaseFormattestingthattheywillpersonallyassumeanyandallriskassociatedwiththisprogram.DamageControl(MSC‐DC)AllDamageControlcourseattendeesshouldbringclothingappropriate forworking inadirty,wetenvironment. Please note that this coursemay be conducted as an evening class over a four‐dayperiod. Therefore, course attendees should contactMITAGS’ Admissions Coordinator prior to thestartofclasstoverifythecourseconveningtimes.AttendeeswillberequiredtosignaConsentandRelease Form attesting that they will personally assume any and all risk associated with thisprogram.FastRescueBoat(FRB)StudentsattendingtheFastRescueBoatcourseshouldbringappropriateseasonalclothing,astheywillbeinaboatonthebayeachclassday.Eachstudentwillberequiredtogetintothewaterinasurvival suit. MedicalPerson‐in‐Charge(MED‐PIC)Thetwo‐weekMedicalPerson‐in‐Chargecourseisanintensiveprogram.Thecoursecoversalloftheshipboardmedicalcarecomponents,includingone‐dayofclinicalpracticeinahospitalsetting.Dresscodeforthehospitalincludesthefollowing:

Slacks(jeanoranydenimmaterialisnotacceptable)

Closed‐toeshoes.Although this course does not lead to certification as an Emergency MedicalTechnician (EMT) – Basic, it doesmeet the standards for the highest level ofSTCW‐95medicalcare.StudentswhoarecurrentlyEMT‐Basiccertifiedmayusethis course for re‐certification. There will be someeveningtrainingsessions(afterdinner)untilapproximately2000.Onthefinaldayofclass,youmaynot finish until about 1900. Please keep this information inmindwhenmaking departure travelarrangements.The firearms range is an outdoor facility. Therefore, youwill need to bring appropriate seasonalclothing(includingraingear).

Ifyouarereturninghomeonacommercialairlineflight,youmaybetestedforgunpowderresidueattheairport.MITAGSwillprovidealettertoconfirmyourtraining.However,toavoidfurtherdelays,pleasebringclothingandanextrapairofshoesthatyouwillnotweartothefiringrange.CourseattendeeswillberequiredtosignaConsentandReleaseWaiverpriortoparticipationintheprogram. Additionally, any student that has ever been convicted of a felony, or any crime ofdomesticviolence,maynotparticipateintheclass.Therearenoexceptionstothisrule.

Shiphandling(SHS) The Institute offers numerousShiphandling (SHS)programs. Note thatMITAGS’ Shiphandling coursesmay haveeitheramorningorafternoonstarttime.Themorningsimulatorshiftmaybeginasearly as 0730 and the evening shiftmayend as late as 2100. Students shouldcontacttheAdmissionsCoordinatorpriorto the start of class to verify the courseconveningtimes.

TankermanPerson‐in‐Charge(T‐PIC)Students attending the Tankerman Person‐in‐Charge program must be proficient in the Englishlanguageandhavetheability tooperatea four‐functioncalculator. AttendeesmustalsopossessavalidMerchantMarinerCredentialDocument(MMC). TerrestrialandCoastalNavigationandCompasses(TCNAV‐CO)Studentsattendingthefifteen‐dayTerrestrialandCoastalNavigationandCompassescoursewillberequiredtoparticipateinseveraleveningstudysessions.Inaddition,courseparticipantsareencouragedtobringthefollowingitemswiththemtoclass:

ChiefMate/Master(CMM)Program

Notice: Beginning July 2011, 70‐hour courseswill no longer be offered in two one‐weekformats.AnyCMMcoursecurrentlydesignatedbyI(week1)andII(week2)willbecomeonetwo‐weekoffering,withtheexceptionofCMM‐SHS‐ADVI&II.A70‐hourAdvancedNavigationcoursewillreplaceECDISandVPENforChiefMateandMasterattendees.TheChiefMate/Master(CMM)ProgramincludesallofthetrainingandsupportthatyouwillneedtoattainaChiefMateorMaster’slicense.Moreimportantly;itwillgiveyoutheknowledge,skills,andconfidencetotakeonthedutiesandresponsibilitiesofaChiefMateorMaster.ThefullCMMProgramistwelve‐weeksinduration.Afewoftheindividualclassesthatmakeuptheprogramhavespecialpre‐requisitesorcourserequirements.Theyincludethefollowing:ChiefMate/MasterAdvancedMeteorology(CMM‐ADVWX)The Chief Mate/Master Advanced Meteorology course is five‐days in length. TheAmericanPublicUniversitySystem(APUS)will allow transferofacademiccreditearned fromMITAGS Chief Mate/Master (CMM) License Advancement Program courses into APUS GraduateDegreeandCertificatePrograms.TheagreementprovidesMITAGSCMMprogramstudentsuptoonethirdofthecreditsrequiredtocompletetheirMasterofArtsDegreeprogram.Withthisagreement,uponcompletionoftheMITAGSCMMprogram,APUS,throughitsaffiliatesAmericanPublicUniversityandAmericanMilitaryUniversity,willacceptuptotwelve(12)semesterhourcreditstowardstheTransportationandLogisticsManagementM.A.Degreeprogram.Other degree programs will vary on the amount of transfer credit to be accepted. CMM students will have the option to consider over thirty graduate degrees, which will be eligible for transfer credit, up to a maximum of twelve.
