SPACC Project Development Objectives

To support efforts by Dominica, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines to implement specific (integrated) pilot adaptation measures addressing primarily, the impacts of climate change on their natural resource base, focused on biodiversity and land degradation along coastal and near-coastal areas

Preserve the ecosystem functioning in Morne Diablotin and Morne Trois Pitons National Parks in Dominica

Maintain the health of coastal ecosystems in the Vieux Fort area

Incorporate lessons from strengthening of key infrastructure into local hazards management plan and building guidelines in Saint Lucia

Stabilize population of 25 ha of remaining Black Mangrove (Avicennia sp) stands in Union Island

resource management plan, including climate change concerns and incorporate into national planning process.

Stabilize diversity of coral reefs and associated species

GEF uses the lessons learned in at least one GEF adaptation project and applies the experience with performance indicators by incorporating them into adaptation guidelines for adaptation

SPACC Progress to Date

In Bequia a potable water system powered by renewable energy has been identified and designed

In Saint Lucia engineering guidelines have been devloped to be incorporated into the building codes of the country

Also in Saint Lucia a wastewater recycling and rain water irrigation system will be co-financed by a hotel resort and the project

In Dominica five pilots have been identified


SPACC Lessons Learned

Adaptation is costly Capacity to implement in theses three

countries is still limited A level of uncertainity exist about

understanding of what adaptation is among stakeholders
