• Low PLF and flexible operation of thermal power plants

• Balancing capacity and steep ramping requirements

• Shortage of natural gas

• Low VM & High ash content in coal

• Implementation of new environmental norms

• Sustained supply of Coal for daily generation

• Ash disposal

• Pump storage

CHALLENGES – PRESENT AND EMERGING IN INDIAN POWER MARKET

OPERATION

Page 11: SPEAKER: SHRI S.K. GHOSH, DY. CE, DSTPS, DVC, ANDAL...thermal (excluding gas): 206.46 55.40 217.00 45.30 267.00 32.10 ... •igef shared the project report of successful trial operation

1. Hydro plants are especially suitable for quick supply of power. Pump storage,

existing and under construction, shall be used exclusively for meeting the

peak load or balancing the system.

2. Gas power plants have better start stop capability and need to contribute to

flexible generation as much as possible.

3. 210 MW & 500 MW units shall be operated at lower MTL than bigger size

units.

4. Among the fleet of (200 MW, 500/600 MW or 660/800 MW) thermal units, which

are efficient and have low ECR, should be given preference over other units in

terms of generation schedule.

ACTION PLAN TO MEETUP CHALLENGES

5. Test run/ study of thermal units for operation at low load shall beconducted as has been done for NTPC plants & presently beingundertaken for DVC, DSTPS & MPL, MAITHON.

6. Capex to be reimbursed on actual basis after examination,Regulatory intervention is required.

7. The skills of plant operators to enhance to meet up present

requirement .

Factors considered for

selection of a thermal unit:

1. Unit heat rate

2. Load centre unit

3. Pit head unit

4. Old units

5. New units

6. Merit Order/ ECR

7. Super critical/ Sub-critical

8. Size of unit

• Boiler tubes, bends, water walls etc. - life consumption from fatigue, creep-fatigue, corrosion, expansion

• Turbine valves, casings, rotors – life consumption

• Achieving very low firing rates

• Other impacts

– air heater corrosion and leakage

– lower efficiency, incr. cost

– higher emissions
