Following the phenomenal success of TEDxNorwichED: thinking differently we are pleased to announce that TEDxNorwichED is back on the 18th March 2017, with TEDxNorwichED: INSPIRING GENERATIONS - the only TEDxED event in the UK in 2017.

WE ARE NOW STARTING OUR SEARCH FOR TALKS AT THE EVENT.

Do you have an idea to share or story to tell?

Applications are open to anyone - from the unknown to the famous - you do not have had to have talked before to apply - but, obviously, we do ask that you are confident that you can present a TED-style talk!

This pack gives lots of information about the event, the process and how to apply. Please do take the time to read it all.

We look forward to hearing your ideas and applications to speak at TEDxNorwichED and ask that by 9 am on Tuesday 25th October you email us on [email protected] with the enclosed application form completed.

We will then confirm your participation by Monday 21st November.

Please note, as, with last year, we anticipate a high demand for speaking places, but will try to accommodate as many speakers as we can.

Many thanks,

The TEDxNorwichED team.

So what is TED and TEDx?

TEDTED is a global foundation devoted to IDEAS WORTH SPREADING. Founded in 1984, TED began as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged. Since then, its scope has become broader, covering almost all topics; from science to business to global issues. TED is a platform, and a global movement focused on meaningful change through the power of ideas!

TEDxTED = Inspires innovation, thought leadership, and visionary insight.x = Independently organised TED event

TEDx is designed to give communities and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at a local level. At these events, people from the community (that’s you!) take the stage to inspire others, thus are shaping the future of the community. The event brings together leading individuals that are pursuing inventive solutions in any discipline.

Our theme - Inspiring Generations

The overarching ‘theme’ for our 2017 event is INSPIRING GENERATIONS.

Given the ever changing society, many would agree it is time for us to consider how we ensure we inspire everyone- from children to pensioners – about learning, education and even life in general! It is through having inspiring people from all generations that we, as a human race, can continue to develop and thrive.

We want to hear your ideas worth sharing about how we can inspire everyone.

Our theme is purposefully broad - anything that can be linked back to the theme of inspiring people goes. It could be about inspiring people about something (exercise, mental health, maths, English, etc.), inspiring change in communities, about learning (as adults or children), about changes to our education system, or many more things- it up to you!

In short, TEDxNorwichED: Inspiring Generations is aimed at sparking a discussion, debate and grassroots change, and continuing the wave already started by our previous event.

HOW DO YOU, OR HOW CAN WE INSPIRE ALL GENERATIONS?

Page 8: Speaker Information Pack (please do read)

Who do we want to speak?

Applications to speak are open to ANYONE - from the unknown to the ‘famous’ – everyone has a chance to speak at TEDxNorwichED. All that matters is that you have an idea to share, or story to tell.

We are, however, particularly keen to hear from children and young people themselves - so please do pass this pack on to any young person you feel could share something about our theme - perhaps they inspire their own or other generations? Do they have a big idea about how education can evolve to keep their generation inspired? Have they got an inspiring story or skill to share?

THE EVENT WAS EXCITING, INSPIRING, FUN AND VERY PROFESSIONAL 2016 Partner

Your Talk - The Basic Low Down

TED-STYLEIt may be stating the obvious, but your talk should be broadly ‘TED style’. If you are unfamiliar with the TED talks, then we’d love you to view some of our 2016 talks.

Ideas that inspire!Of course, we want all of our talks to, in their unique way, tackle something that fits with our overarching theme of ‘inspiring gnerations’.

Education, Education, Education Yes, this is a TEDxED event, but not all talks need to be directly about education. However, it must have some application to education- in it’s broadest sense.

Own the stageYou will have the stage to yourself for the length of your talk- and it goes without saying that you will need to engage and hold your audience’s attention.

Time is precious...Speakers will be given a slot of between 6 and 15 minutes for their talk. This fits with the TEDx style and rulebook and allows us to share a wide range of ideas and talks. Did you know some of the most popular TED talks in the world are under 9 minutes long?

Unique people, unique talksThe talk must be unique- it must not be something that people could have heard elsewhere. The ideas, may of course, not be brand new, but the actual talk must be!You may also want to consider different ways of presenting your talk/idea- we are open to anything!

Page 14: Speaker Information Pack (please do read)

Power to the screen…We have a massive screen for you to use when presenting. This will be hung above the stage, and will by default, show ‘you’ on stage - so everyone can see you clearly. Of course, you can use the screen in any way you like during your talk - you can show powerful images, videos, quotes, key words etc. or anything else you can think of! We have even arranged for you to have free access to the vast collection of images on Shutterstock to help you create engaging content for our screen. However, as with the ‘TED’ style, we will be asking speakers not to use a ‘traditional’ presentation (e.g., a slide with lines of text on it that the speaker reads from) - and some of the best presentations for 2016 did not use our screen.

Practice makes perfectWe appreciate taking on a TEDx talk is a commitment, and thank you in advance for the time you will put into practicing, perfecting and polishing your talk - but know that all the effort will be worth it when you present on the day and are part of the important conversation about how we can be ‘thinking differently’ about education. We will be inviting all speakers to have a virtual rehearsal of their talk with one of the organising team before the event, and will be able to provide access to the venue on the evening before as well as the morning of the event if you want to try out your talk on stage. We also have the exciting opportunity for some of our presenters to work (virtually) with a speaker coach - let us know when you email us if you would like to be considered for working with them!

Page 15: Speaker Information Pack (please do read)

Being part of the conversationThe most powerful part of TEDxNorwichED will be the conversations that talks like yours inspire. We, therefore, ask that all speakers: Attend the whole event Be comfortable being sat at a table as part of the general audience during the rest of the program. Be willing to talk more about their idea and talk to their fellow attendees, and help to spark

conversations and discussions.

Video StarAll of our talks will be filmed and uploaded to the popular TEDx YouTube channel. We will also be adding all of the talks to your website- to help continue the conservation and lead to real, grass roots, change. TED also select some TEDx talks each week to transfer over to the main TED.com site - and we are hopeful that some talks from TEDxNorwichED will ultimately make their way to TED.com. So your talk may join talks from the likes of Bill Gates and Sir Ken Robinson!

Want to think outside the box?As part of their desire to innovate, TED has granted us special permission to have one talk at our event that doesn’t fit the standard TED format. How this could look is completely open - but it must still fit with the TED ethos. If you have an idea for this, please let us know in your application.

Page 16: Speaker Information Pack (please do read)

A few things that can’t happen

We are bound by the (rather large) TEDx rulebook, and also have our education specific set of ‘house rules’ - we, therefore, need to ask that politely:

Your talk is not aimed directly at selling anything Your talk is not aimed at promoting any company, organisation or entity You do not use your talk to canvas for a particular political party or union You do not talk about the advantages and drawbacks of academisation/free schools etc - the desire

to improve education for children extends beyond the category of school You must either ‘own’ the ideas in your talk- or give clear credit to those who do Your talk must, of course, be ‘clean’ and suitable for adding to the TEDx YouTube site, the

TEDxNorwichED site and potentially TED.com

Page 17: Speaker Information Pack (please do read)

What makes a great TEDx Talk?

Each talk is, of course, unique - the talks mentioned earlier give an idea of the different styles - yours could be one of these types, or something totally different!
