Speaker Biographies

Gail Becke

Scholle Packaging’s Advanced Film Development Manager, has over 25 years’ experience in the packaging industry, focused heavily on barrier packaging with a passion to create the most efficient, thinnest plastic packaging possible that still affords maximum protection for food and beverage products.

Prior to joining Scholle in 2011, Mrs. Becke had experience at Berry Plastics and Pliant Corporation, working on barrier packaging technology for food customers. Mrs. Beckep , g p g g gyalso has experience with Tredegar Film Products and The Dow Chemical Company. She has published multiple articles in the field of food packaging.

Bill Brassington, ETS Consulting

Bill Brassington provides independent consultancy in safety and security in the freight logistics supply chain.  

Bill is currently acting as the Consultant to the Group of Experts representing the International Maritime O i ti (IMO) th I t ti l L b O i ti (ILO) d th U it d N ti E i C i iOrganisation (IMO), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) and is re‐writing the guidelines for packing cargo transport units (CTUs).  Previously he had produced a research paper for the ILO entitled “Safety in the supply chain in relation to packing of containers”.Bill also works with the Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers sub‐committee (DSC) of the Marine S f t C itt (MSC) f th IMO d h b ti b f ki i l d ith thSafety Committee (MSC) of the IMO and has been an active member of many working groups involved with the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) and is now one of the foremost experts in this field.

In addition to working with UN agencies, Bill is a member of the International Safety Panel of ICHCAI t ti l d i th th f b f th i B i fi P hl t t bl th “S f h dli f t kInternational and is the author of a number of their Briefing Pamphlets notably the “Safe handling of tank containers”, the “Safe handling of flexitanks” and the “Safe handling of flatrack containers”.Bill’s background is engineering and he built up his knowledge of containers with P&O Containers and GE SeaCowith global responsibility for container maintenance, design and manufacture.  He is also the Chairman of the I t ti l O i ti f St d di ti (ISO) T h i l C itt 104 S b itt 2 S i lInternational Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Technical Committee 104, Sub‐committee 2 – Special Containers.

Bill was a founder member of the Container Owners Association (COA) working with them to develop the “Recommended Code of Practice for flexitank / container combinations” and has worked with Performance BIB“Recommended Code of Practice for flexitank / container combinations” and has worked with Performance BIB in the preparation of Laura West’s “Guide of Good Practices for the Transport of Wine in Flexitanks”.

Jennifer Bond

Jennifer studied Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University in  New Zealand. After working in wine cellars in the New and Old Worlds she worked as Technical Director for CellarworldWorlds she worked as Technical Director for Cellarworld International (CWI), a winemaking consultancy.  At CWI she worked across Europe and South America making own label wines for UK supermarkets, improving existing wines and developing new wines. 

She then moved to Somerfield supermarkets where she was the Technical Manager for Beers, Wines and Spirits. She left Somerfield in 2006 to start her own wine technical consultancy business ‘Grape to Shelf Consulting Ltd’. Since then she has worked for contract packers, wine producers, wine agents, glass manufacturers and supermarkets. Her work covers bulk shipping, wine packaging (all formats including closures) and ensuring the quality of the wine is maintained throughout the packaging process As a BRC trainedquality of the wine is maintained throughout the packaging process. As a BRC trained auditor she works closely with sites to improve standards and to ensure Due Diligence.

Julien Ducruet

Julien Ducruet est originaire de Provence ou il à suivi un cursus universitaire scientifique. Puis, il est entré à la faculté d’œnologie de B d f i M t d h h l i i i d’Bordeaux pour faire un Master de recherche en œnologie, suivi d’un doctorat dans le laboratoire du professeur Yves Glories. Il a ensuite travaillé comme responsable Recherche et développement chez un fabricant de produits œnologiques et également vinifier en cave p g q gcoopérative et cave particulière. Il est arrivé en 2003 à l’Ecole d’Ingénieurs de Changins comme professeur/chercheur dans les domaines de l’œnologie, la technologie de cave et les boissons di tillé L’é l d’I é i d Ch i t l’ i filiè idistillées. L’école d’Ingénieurs de Changins est l’unique filière suisse formant des œnologues.

Julien Ducruet was born in Provence where he completed a Scientific degree course. He then joinedth F lt f O l i B d t d M t ' d i l f ll d b PhD i ththe Faculty of Oenology in Bordeaux to do a Master's degree in oenology, followed by a PhD in the laboratory of Professor Yves Glories. Following this, he worked as Head of Research and Development for a wine cellar and cooperative cellar.  In 2003, he arrived at the School of Engineering Changins as a teacher / researcher in the fields of oenology, technology, cellar and g g g / f f gy, gy,distilled beverages. The School of Engineer of Changins is the only Swiss school for Oenology.

Eddie Fellows

A qualified Management Accountant who left his sheet feeding divisional role as Commercial Director at D S Smith Group Plc in 2006, to assume the position of MD at p , pCRP. Eddie previously held a range of senior management and financial roles across the industry in a career that has spanned 28 years.  He now Chairs the Education Work Group for Performance BIB.

Michael Hertzman

Michael Hertzman is Supply Chain Manager for Primewine, Sweden’s leading importer of bag‐in‐box wine. Michael’s job is to figure out how to best bring in wines from Chile, South America g g ,and Europe while fully respecting customer requirements in terms of product quality and delivery times and doing so at a reasonable cost.

In principle, orchestrating wine suppliers, shipping agents and transport companies into one smooth, efficient, dependable and predictable supply chain ‐ delivering the perfect wine at the right time – should be easy. Then, there is the real world….

Tony Hoarey

Technical Manager for DS Smith Plastics  (tonyh@rapak.com)

Tony worked for IMI in developing flexibags for bulk liquid systems where military technology for mobile fuel systems was being adapted for industrial applications. Liquid volumes of 20000L to maximise weight limits on ISO Containers were developed and the range expanded to suit the IBC market of nominally 1000L.market of nominally 1000L.

He then moved to David S Smith Bag‐in‐Box business to act as Development Manager in 1988 to both commercialise the IBC developments and provide technical support to sales and the d l f d h l d k k h h h bdevelopment of new products in the Bag‐in‐Box liquid packaging market. Since then he has been involved in the roll out of the technology across a wider European Market as well as technical co‐operation with purchased businesses in the USA and Australasia.

Tony is heavily involved in the development of the Global Bag in Box wine market utilising latest film, tap and packing technologies to improve shelf life and product quality across a growing market place. He is responsible for technical aspects of the bag in box package across Europe including New 

d d l d l f h Li id k i d i i S S i h l iProduct development and sales support for the Liquid packaging and Dispensing DS Smith Plastics business.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Jungg

Rainer Jung is a Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Oenology and Wine Technology at the Geisenheim Research Institute in Germany. His PhD thesis in Oenology (1995) was on "Test Methods for the description of the quality of cork" His teaching responsibilities also includes lectures at severalquality of cork . His teaching responsibilities also includes lectures at several other establishments including the University of Applied Sciences Wiesbaden/Geisenheim & Justus‐Liebig‐University Giessen.

Rainer Jung has published many scientific papers, teaches and is a recognized international expert in wine quality, alternative wine packaging, cork and alternative bottle closures, sensory test methods for the evaluation of wine, the elimination of off odors in wine the impact of grape and mustthe elimination of off odors in wine, the impact of grape and must clarification  and fermentation on wine quality, wine filling technology, oxygen management, and wine shelf‐life (for all package types).

Technical Agricultural Engineer

After majoring in chemistry and food technology, Dominique became responsible for quality control atJacques' Wein‐Depot in 1982. He has worked on the TRIAL involving the ageing of wine in BIB and then on the ‘Eurobib’ project.C tl h i b f th t t f J ' W i D t ibl fCurrently, he is a member of the management team of Jacques' Wein‐Depot responsible for procurement and logistics.

Katie MolletWaitrose

Katie joined UK supermarket Waitrose in August 2011, initially buying Italy, BIB, Small bottles and low alcohol but h dd d S th Af i L i E t E dhas now added South Africa, Loire, Eastern Europe, and 'world' wines to her remit. 

Katie previously worked at Asda where she was wine p yselector for 4 years with responsibility for Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Germany, USA, small bottles and bag in box. She joined Asda in 2006, as spirits trading

Frithjof Nicolaysenj y

Frithjof graduated in Microbiology 1977. He was a research scientist for food technology before joining the Norwegian State monopoly where he was quality director for Wines and Spirits for 13 years. In 1996 he became QC manager for Arcus Gruppenwhere he was also chief buyer of Wines and Spirits for five years Now Vice President of Arcus he is responsible foryears. Now Vice President of Arcus he is responsible for corporate affairs.

Frithjof has been an expert to the OIV since 1984 and in 2008 received the Merit medal from OIV’s executive committee. He has been President of the European Federation of Wine and Spirits Importers and Distributors since 2005 and is currently also a member of the Presidential council of FIVS (Federation International des Vins et Spiritieux).

Patrick Shea

Patrick Shea’s university background was Biology, Agriculture (BSc, MSc) &  Economics  (PhD). Patrick has worked as a University researcher (London) and teacher (several European universities)researcher (London) and teacher (several European universities), winery manager (near Montpellier) and, since many years, as Sales & Marketing manager & technical problem solver for Vitop (Smurfit Kappa Group). He has co‐authored several publications including the “Guide of Good Practices for the Filling of Wine in BIB” (2006), “Technical Specifications of Wine BIB Packaging” (2006) & “The Measurement of Total Oxygen in filled BIB Wine” (2010). The latest industry reference to appear is “Recommended Procedures forindustry reference to appear is  Recommended Procedures for Wine BIB Shelf‐life studies” (2012), written with scientific partners Jean‐Claude Vidal & Sophie Vialis.

Ulf Sjödin MWj

Head of Category Management at the Swedish retail monopoly Systembolaget. 

Ulf has a master in chemical engineering and became Sweden's first Master of Wine in 2007 With a backgroundSweden s first Master of Wine in 2007. With a background in V&S Group, he has been working with bag‐in‐box wines since they were introduced in Sweden more than 15 years ago.

Sophie Vialisp

Sophie Vialis is a leading oenologist & research scientist with Inter‐Rhône located in Orange, France.   

Sophie has managed many research projects and published in many professional journalsSophie has managed many research projects and published in many professional journals aimed at the French wine industry. Sophie has many areas of expertise but is best known for her work in oxygen management & measurement systems and closure testing (for glass bottles) as well as the many on‐site audits she conducts on the performance of wine filling 

(f f )systems (from wine preparation through to filling and storage).

In addition to her research activities, Sophie conducts many training programs and manages her own grape growing farm & wine making operation (not to mention delicious olives, jamsher own grape growing farm & wine making operation (not to mention delicious olives, jams & many other products grown on her farm).

Jean Claude Vidal

Jean Claude is an Engineer and Oenologist. He is Manager of the “Dissolved Gases in Oenology” laboratory at INRA UEPR.
