Plan it Youth students and mentors have been meeting every Wednesday during Period 1 and 2 for the last 7 weeks. After the initial nerves students and mentors are settling into the program and getting to know each other. The students involved are really enjoying having someone outside of school as a support person. Recently students and their mentors travelled to the Newcastle Careers Information Centre, where they spent time researching career possibilities and pathways. This gave the students an opportunity to look at the skills and qualifications needed for a range of jobs and will be followed up further in the coming weeks. Thank you to our Plan it Youth mentors for taking our students on this excursion and for being involved in the program. Kris Turner Plan it Youth Coordinator

YEAR 12 REPORT

MADD Night The CAPA Faculty held their showcase of talent with their MADD night on 20 June. The night, which was held in the school hall, featured Visual Arts, Visual Design, Photography, Dance, Drama and Music items from individual students and ensembles from years 7 to 12. The large crowd were treated to a smorgasbord of the talented students we have at RTHS. Congratulations to the performers, helpers and hard working CAPA staff. Thank you to all the parents, students and community members who came along to support the evening. NAIDOC Week We celebrated our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with NAIDOC celebrations this week. We held an assembly, had workshops on Aboriginal dance, didgeridoo, and boomerang making. On Friday we held a barbeque for the whole school. Unfortunately the activities planned for Wednesday had to be postponed because of the stop work. Goodbye Bruce Read Long-serving Home Economics teacher Bruce Read retires at the end of this term. Bruce has made an outstanding contribution, not only to the education of our students at RTHS, but in nurturing their lives with his wise advice and the running of programs such as our Breakfast Club. He will be missed, but we wish him all the best in retirement. Year 12 Trial Exams Year 12 start their HSC Trial examinations on Thursday 19 July for a week. Plenty of study time over the holidays. Education week Education Week is the week commencing 30 August 2012 next term. This year we will have an open afternoon on Tuesday, 31 August from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm followed by an award evening with our partner Primary Schools to celebrate the success of our students, staff and community members. More information will come home at the start of next term. PBL Celebration Our positive rewards assemblies to recognise the positive achievements of students in Term 2 will take place on Wednesday 18 July. School Holidays Another term is over. Year 12 only have one term of schooling left. School resumes on Tuesday 17 July. Be safe. Michael Whiting Principal A number of reminders for Year 12 students: Students are advised to dress in warm uniform for their trial HSC exams in the Hall (19 - 27 July 2012).

An excursion to Luna Park has been organised for Friday 27 July. Please give notes to Mr McMullen and take

money to the Front Office.

Please bring in your laptops for Mr Wirth. He needs to check them.

If you have not paid for your locker or subject fees, please do so.

Tickets for the Formal will go on sale shortly. Seating is in tables of 10. The cost of the ticket is $80. While most of the details have been organised, there are a few items that have to be finalised. Students have been made aware of these details and they will be finalised shortly.

Term 3 for Year 12 – The last term of teaching and learning. Hopefully all the groundwork for success has occurred and students will enjoy their last term of official schooling and finish the term with some outstanding activities/events and be as stress free as possible for the HSC. We have put much time and effort into developing self worth, year group morale and maturity. Accordingly we expect students to excel, raise the standard and be proud of themselves and their achievements. Kevin McMullen Year 12 Adviser

SENIOR STUDY

Trial HSC Exams

The Trial Exam period for Year 12 students starts on Thursday 19 July, Week 1 of term 2 and concludes on the following Thursday 26 July. In order to be fully prepared for the trial exams all students should be well underway with their program of revision. It is recommended that students spend time in the school holidays completing topic summaries for each of their subjects and most importantly, practising applying their knowledge by completing past HSC papers. These papers can be accessed by all students by going to the Board of Studies website: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/ Trial exam results will contribute towards the school based assessment mark for each subject. These marks directly contribute to the final HSC result. A copy of the Trial Exam timetable has been included in the newsletter. Students are only required to attend school as per the instructions on this timetable. Year 12 Student Review

Rutherford Technology High completes a Year 12 Student Review in term 4 and term 2 throughout the HSC year. This process helps staff and students to identify any areas of concern, enabling strategies and support structures to be developed which meet the learning needs of individual students. This week all Year 12 students have been given a copy of their ‘Student Review’ results. Please discuss these results with your child and if you have any concerns regarding their progress do not hesitate to contact the school. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress in their HSC year please do not hesitate to contact the school. K Turner Senior Study Co-ordinator

Rutherford Technology High School says farewell this week to Home Economics Teacher, Mr Bruce Read, who is retiring from the Teaching profession after many years at the school. Unfortunately Bruce won’t get to work in the newly renovated kitchen which is the pride of the Home Economics faculty, but his legacy lives on through the inspiration he provided many students to take up Commercial Cooking as a career pathway, working in kitchens across the Hunter region and beyond. W e w i s h B r u c e m a n y congratulations on a long and happy retirement.

M.A.D.D showcase On June 20th the CAPA faculty held their Music, Art, Dance & Drama showcase. The day began with the Matinee performance to an audience made up of stage 3 students from Lochinvar and Rutherford Public schools. We thank Principals, Mrs Tomlins and Mr Andrews, staff and parents for bringing the students along for the concert. The primary school concert ran for seventy-five minutes and brought forward a few new performers to the stage. This included year 11 student Hayley Newstead, the 7K drama class, year 7 vocal soloist Bellina Pannowitz, year 10 solo dancer Brittany Lucas, year 10 pianist Luke Hall and a year 8 rock band from the mini elective class featuring Tahj Perry, Eula Pacamalan, Emily Lambourne, Jack Williams & Ryan Paton. In this program there was a combined schools concert band featuring budding musicians from the high school and Rutherford Public School. Mrs Rebecca Bridge from the public school wanted to encourage an instrumental music program at her school. The matinee concert was their premier concert performance. The group, in smaller

numbers, again played in the night showcase and will again perform early next term at the Maitland District Performing Arts festival. The evening showcase was a smash hit. There was an excellent turn out of over 300 parents, family, friends and staff who were a supportive audience for the performers. The evening featured the award winning Drama ensemble, the highly talented school dance ensemble, various drama groups from years 7, 8 & 11, the year 9 elective dance class, various group items from the Year 12 music students, vocal solos from Emma Moore, Hillary Chatimba and Natasha Selkrig.

The Aboriginal Dance group performed at both the Matinee and evening concerts, and as usual, were great ambassadors of the indigenous culture. Besides their traditional dances, we were delighted to have Isaac York play his didgeridoo as part of their performance. The group have been invited to dance in the Maitland District Performing Arts festival in mid-July. One of the highlights of the evening was a beautiful Samoan dance by sisters Tiffani and Sofia Betham who were joined on stage by their older sister and ex-student Siobhan. The ladies were attired in traditional Samoan dress and were a hit with the audience. The Visual Arts department featured works from classes across stages four to six. The displays which were set up the perimeter of the hall showcased various art mediums including photographs, t-shirt designs, paintings, portraits, clay sculptures and student portfolios. Some of the artists were present at the concerts to discuss their work with the audience. On behalf of the CAPA faculty, I wish to thank all our Parents, Friends and Staff for attending the concerts. A special thanks to our MC’s - Alex Cichon, Mason Brett, Nadine Clancy and Bradley Walker; to our Music, Drama and Dance performers and Visual Arts students for presenting their work, and to the students and staff for setting up and running this very successful showcase. Ms Hornery - HT CAPA (relieving)

CULTURAL AWARENESS DAY

Back L - R: Mason Brett, Ryan Jackson, Dylan Clarke, Hannah Witherdin, Jake Robinson Front L - R: Keely Clack, Rhiarna Hopley, Molly Crissell, Jaymee-Leigh Wood

On 31 May 2012 the Beacon Leaders were accompanied by Mr Butler to a Cultural Awareness Day at the Maitland Neighbourhood Centre. The contingent from Rutherford Technology High School was fortunate enough to hear acclaimed author Donna Meehan talk about her history, her journey through life and her thoughts on present Australian society. Donna explored issues such as the Stolen Generation and its impact on Indigenous people, the process of reconnection of stolen children and their families, the support services available to Aboriginal people today and the stereotypes and misconceptions people have about a variety of issues in Australian society. The Beacon Leaders participated enthusiastically in all aspects of the day and the other community members present commented on the exceptional conduct and positive attitude demonstrated by these students. Thank you to the Maitland Neighbourhood Centre for their invitation to attend and their hospitality.

BING LEE - THORNTON

A reminder that Bing Lee Thornton is continuing its schools program aimed at assisting local schools to acquire electrical appliances at no cost. Every dollar spent within the store can earn credits for the school if nominated by the customer at the point of sale. Rutherford Technology High School has signed up to be a part of this program so please keep this in mind if making a purchase at Bing Lee Thornton. All you need to do is to mention to the cashier that you are supporting this program and advise them the name of the school. Any member of the local community can donate their credit dollars to the school of their choice so please mention this to family and friends if they intend purchasing electrical items at the store.

Best Wishes to Year 10 student, Jake Robinson, who flew out this week to New Zealand as a member of the Under 15 Combined High Schools Water Polo team at the Pan Pacific Games where he will be playing against teams from countries including New Zealand and America. Jake’s position in the team is a reflection of his dedication to his sport – travelling to Sydney several times a week to train. Jake has to maintain a balance between his school work and his sport. Whilst the focus of the trip will be in the pool, there will also be plenty of opportunities for Jake to socialise with players from other teams and to experience New Zealand. We all wish Jake well and look forward to hearing about the team’s experiences on his return.

Last year, with support from our students and their families, Rutherford Technology High school earned over $1,000 through the Coles Sports for Schools Program. With this money we purchased equipment for the school gym, increasing the number of students able to participate in cardio lessons throughout our sports programs. Rutherford Technology High has again registered in this program in 2012. A collection box is located in the PE staffroom and we would gladly accept your support in collecting and returning to us any vouchers you may obtain through your regular shopping.
