Yamato Takada Sister City On Wednesday our two captains Lockyer Wilson and Alyssa McDonald joined me for morning tea at the Lismore City Council Chambers. Lismore Public School has signed up to the ‘Schools Friendship Program’ with the view to building relationships with Katashio Elementary Schools. Kataisho Elementary School in Lismore’s sister city in Japan – Yamato Takada. Children will have the opportunity to share with students in Japan. Extension Writing Group The 3/4 and 5/6 Extension Writing Groups have been unable to meet over the last two weeks due to the unexpected work in A-Block and subsequent lack of space. When the work is completed, we will come together again. I apologise for the inconvenience and will run some additional sessions to finish off. Sports Carnival All students will be involved in the athletics carnival at Riverview Park on Friday. Please be sure to pay the $4 for bus and ground hire to the office. If you are taking your child prior to the conclusion of the carnival, please be sure to let Mrs Clarke know. It should be an enjoyable day for all involved and we hope to see lots of family and friends supporting our students. Signing children out early We understand that there are times when parents need to sign children out from school early and request their children to be sent to the office. If you know you need to collect your child early, advance warning by way of a note or phone call can assist the office staff to ensure children are available in a timely manner. Due to the construction work at A-Block, there has been a lot of last minute re-shuffling of teaching spaces. Your assistance and patience here is appreciated. Lantern Making Workshops Information is enclosed with this newsletter on the lantern making workshops which will be held here at the school on 11 June. Please return the notes and money if you would like your child to participate. Eat it to Beat it To date we have had several parents register for the ‘Eat it to Beat it’ program next Wednesday. If you would like to participate, the aim of the program is to provide parents with ideas to encourage healthy eating. Sessions run from 9.00am till 10.30am and from 4.30pm till 6.00pm. Please contact the office to book. Congratulations Cross Country Runners and Softballers Last week a number of students competed in the Northern Rivers Zone Cross Country Carnival at Corndale. Congratulations to all involved. Special mention must be made of Liam R and Caelin B. Both these boys qualified for Regional Cross Country in Kempsey: Liam came first in his event and Caelin came second. On Tuesday our boys and girls softball teams played the first three rounds of the PSSA Knockout competition. Both teams enjoyed close games and were narrowly defeated. Special thanks to Mrs Carrall and Andrew Carrall for coaching. P&C/Canteen Our next P&C meeting is next Wednesday 11th June from 6.00pm – everyone is welcome. Last week the Canteen Committee met. Currently the canteen is running at a loss. The committee is looking at the menu, and there will be price rises to ensure costs are covered. Also, the committee had proposed a ‘meal deal’ for Ocean Day. This has been postponed due to the demands on families for money at this time. Athletics Carnival - Apology It has been brought to my attention that there has been a communication breakdown between the school and home regarding tomorrow's athletics carnival at Riverview Park. This has been mentioned regularly to children on assemblies and in class but I apologise for the late notice. (We had an issue with notes last week which had to be remedied, so infants notes went out late.) I am looking at our communication channels to ensure clear and timely communication with families. If you have a smart phone, I encourage you to download the 'SkoolBag' app (see the last two newsletters). I apologise for any angst and confusion this may have caused families.

Premiers Reading Challenge Many of our students are participating in this year’s Premiers Reading Challenge and it’s not too late to start! Students in K – 2 are challenged to read 30 books and Years 3 – 6 must read at least 20. Remember, 5 books can be personal choice, the rest need to be from the Premiers Reading Challenge booklist (which can be found online) and these books are also in the tubs in the Library. Children can read the books themselves or have someone read to them. You can either log the books you read yourself online, or write them down on the reading logs during your time in the Library. The Challenge closes 22nd August, happy reading! Tess Maddison CHILD DENTAL BENEFITS SCHEME- CDBS The scheme is a Commonwealth funded dental scheme administered by Medicare. 3/4H have been reading the book My Two Blankets by Freya Blackwood. It’s about a girl who comes to Australia as a refugee, she

struggles with new ways of speaking, new ways of living, new ways of being. Below is a sample of some of the students work.

My Two Blankets When I went out it was like skating on top of an ice ring of happiness. The ice ring was big. It made me feel like I belonged. I felt like I wasn’t sad anymore. My Two Blankets When I went out it was like sitting under a waterfall without being able to move. The waterfall made me shiver with coldness. It made me feel sad. It felt like I didn’t belong anymore. When I went out it was like running over the sun with out being burnt. The sun was warm. It mad me feel like I was surrounded with love and happiness. I felt like I wasn't terrified anymore. By Kiarna B. My Two Blankets When I went out, it was like jumping off a bridge of strange people. The water was freezing. It made me feel invisible. I felt like I wasn’t real anymore. By Harry S.
