MENTOR WELCOME LETTER

Welcome to the mentor handbook. The role of a mentor within the SPC Credential Program is extremely important. Thank you for taking to work with future credential holders.

This handbook has been created to work hand in hand with the Mentor Corner on the SPC website (http://www.sportphysio.ca/spc-mentor-corner/ ) Be sure to check in here often as documents are updated on an annual basis. Also keep your eye out for our newsletters and opportunities for mentor webinars and mentor sessions. We hope all of these tools provide support as you work with mentees.

If there are additional resources you feel would be a great addition please let us know at the SPC office or via email [email protected]

Thank you to SPC members Laura Lundquist, Rhonda Shishkin and SPC staff Ereka Roach for their time in developing this handbook.

Becoming a SPC Mentor

SPC CREDENTIAL PROGRAM SUMMARY SPC establishes specific guidelines for the recognition of competency for the Certificate and Diploma credentials. SPC is responsible for the curriculum content and revision. Curriculum may be covered through participation in SPC Courses and SPC sponsored courses. Resource lists provide curriculum material in all topic areas to SPC members. SPC Mentors guide SPC Credential Program candidates through the experiences and exposures needed to challenge the credentialing exams. Physiotherapists may fulfill the requirements for credentials in many ways without having to re-enroll in an institute of higher education.

CERTIF ICATE IN SPORT PHYSIOTHERAPY The physiotherapist will have knowledge and skills in sport physical therapy that contribute to the assessment and management of athletic injuries in the clinical and acute care setting. A certificate-level physiotherapist will have demonstrated competence in working independently at and athletic event and will have sufficient knowledge and experience to attend to injuries and needs that may occur.

DIPLOMA IN SPORT PHYSIOTHERAPY The physiotherapist will be able to care for the total needs of an athletic team. These needs include: pre-season conditioning, training camp, acute injury care, and complete rehabilitation of the athlete back to competitive level. These skills would be further supplemented by the physiotherapist’s clinical expertise as well.

MENTOR REQUIREMENTS Mentors in the SPC Credential System must meet the following requirements:

ü Current SPC member ü Up-to-date maintenance of credentials for either the Certificate or Diploma level

Note: Mentors must hold current credentialing in the level of the program they are mentoring (i.e.: To mentor a Diploma Candidate, the Mentor must have successfully completed the Diploma Exam; however, Mentors for Certificate Candidates, are only required to hold the Certificate Credential).

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR MENTORS Mentors can apply online through a simple form. https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/sport-physiotherapy-canada-credential-program-mentor-application/ You will indicate here your location, preferred contact information and any additional information that will help pair you with candidates.

MAINTENANCE OF SPC MENTOR STATUS Maintaining your mentor status will be included with your Maintenance Of Credentials (every 3 years).

To maintain your status, you will need to attend a Mentor Training Session once every 3 years. This is a 2 hour, in-person session to review current exam candidates’ strengths/weaknesses and changes to the exam process/marking etc; location/timing. This session will coincide with the SPC Annual General Meeting. Teleconference/Web meeting options will be available for those not able to attend in person.

MENTOR SELECTION BY A CANDIDATE List of current mentors in the SPC Credential System with preferred contact information

Link to Mentor Listing: https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/spc-mentor-listing/

CANDIDATE REQUEST PROCESS Candidates will complete the Request Form and Self-Assessment Rubric and then forward them to the selected Mentor.

Link Request Form: https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/mentor-selection/

Link Self-Assessment Rubric: https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/mentor-selection/

MENTOR/CANDIDATE AGREEMENT Upon receipt of a candidate’s Request Form and Self-Assessment, the Mentor will determine if he/she is able to accept the candidate. The Mentor and Candidate will then outline the specific terms of their agreement using this Mentor/Candidate Agreement Form (LINK).

Link to Agreement: https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/program-resources-syllabus-marking-guide-learning-rubrics-log-book/

It is recommended that mentors that are not directly benefiting from a candidate’s credentialing process (ie: clinic owner/boss) be comfortable charging $50/hour for practical sessions and insisting on a minimum of 2 hours per session*. Practical sessions should not have more than 2 practicing candidates per mentor to ensure adequate supervision/feedback. The $50/hour rate should not change based on the number of candidates.

*Note: these recommendations are based on feedback from a survey to mentors and exam candidates in 2015. The recommended rate will be re-evaluated every 5 years via a membership survey

Learning Rubrics By using the rubric, both the candidate and the mentor can quickly see areas for improvement and readiness for exams. A candidate should meet expectations for all learning outcomes (LO).

With time, each level should have a descriptor that relates to the examiner’s marking guide with the rubric being sectioned off like the marking guide. Each LO can be broken down into specifics or left general. See the full rubrics here:

Learning Contract Link to: https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/program-resources-syllabus-marking-guide-learning-rubrics-log-book/

After signing the Mentor/Candidate agreement, the Candidate must then develop a learning contract based on the perceived strengths and weaknesses in the Self-Assessment. This will be reviewed by the Mentor and should help focus the practice sessions on the areas requiring the most attention. For more information on developing a learning contract, click here. (link to info below)

DEVELOPING A LEARNING CONTRACT Exam Candidate

1. Propose a written learning contract of what you want to learn and how you plan to learn it

2. Develop a detailed schedule that has you working on contract activities each week/month

3. Take the initiative to contact your mentor immediately to get the assistance you need (motivation, resources, feedback, problems)

4. Meet with your mentor regularly to review progress and discuss material learned

Mentor

1. Assist in developing learning contract and ensure its completion and good quality

2. Recommend learning resources, such as books, journals, people, agencies, library materials

3. Be available as a resource for information, but allow student to take initiative in asking for assistance with learning

4. Meet regularly with the candidate to review progress, share ideas, and encourage learning

5. Evaluate the student’s work as described in the learning contract

The information above was adapted from the University of Waterloo and more information and a detailed example of a Learning Contract can be found at:

CANDIDATE CREDENTIAL PROGRAM SYLLABUS Please be sure you and your candidate is using the most up to date syllabus.

Credential Exam Process WRITTEN EXAM Application Link: https://www.sportphysio.ca/courses/

The written exams for both the certificate and diploma are completed through an online system. Candidates must secure a location with reliable internet access, a computer and an invigilator for the exam. It is a two hour, 100 question, multiple choice exam that is completed annually at 2pm Eastern Standard Time on the third Friday in November*. It can be completed in English or French. The 2015 passing mark was 50%. The passing mark and written exam questions are reviewed annually.

The candidate who wishes to challenge an SPC Credential Program written exam must receive a recommendation from her/his mentor. Since becoming a Credential Program Applicant the candidate has been working closely with the mentor to ensure they have the knowledge, skill and behaviours necessary for their credential level. Through the review of log books, interim reports, and candidate supervision, the mentor will determine if the candidate has achieved the curriculum objectives. If the mentor believes the candidate will be successful in the credential program examination process she/he can recommend the candidate for the written exam.

The following is required to apply for the written exam:

ü Application deadline is September 15 each year with all supporting documentation and fees

ü Candidates must have a current First Responder certification

ü A recorded of the necessary field experience on a summary sheet, submitted to SPC

ü A minimum of 2 positive Mentor Reports, submitted to SPC

ü A Mentor Recommendation, submitted to SPC Application for the written exam can be completed through your online SPC profile:

PRACTICAL EXAM: Link to: https://www.sportphysio.ca/courses/

The oral-practical exam runs annually during the first weekend in May*. It is completed with three examiners (and possibly additional observers who are training to become examiners). The candidate will stay in the exam room for the duration of the exam (maximum time allowable is 1 hour and 45 minutes for both the Certificate and Diploma; see the Marking Guide for specific time restrictions for each scenario). It can be completed in English or French. A candidate must have a minimum of 2 out of 3 examiners grant him/her a PASS on a scenario to have successfully completed that scenario. Candidates must pass all scenarios to be successful in obtaining the Certificate or Diploma credential.

*Please note that additional examination dates for both the written and oral examinations may be considered annually by SPC but will not affect the static schedule outlined above (November/May).

The six scenarios in the Certificate Exam will be tested in the following order:

Emergency and Immediate Care

Sling and Splinting Techniques

Taping/Strapping Techniques

Protective Equipment

Functional Testing

Sport Massage

The five scenarios in the Diploma Exam will be tested in the following order:

Acute Sideline Assessment

Advanced Taping

Basic Taping

Clinical Assessment and Treatment

Exercise Program

For those candidates wishing to challenge the practical exam for either the Certificate or Diploma level, it is recommended that candidates do 10-20 hours of supervised scenario practice (i.e.: not event coverage) with direct mentorship prior to the oral-practical exam. When possible, sessions should only be 2-3 hours at a time as candidates are likely to gain less knowledge/skill as the session length increases. The number of hours needed will vary based upon the candidate’s experience and proficiency.

The following is required to apply for the oral practical exam:

ü Current membership in SPC

ü Successful completion of the written portion of the exam within the previous three years.

ü Candidates must have a current First Responder certification ü

Application for the oral practical exam can be completed through your online SPC profile:

SPC BANK OF COURSES There are some SPC members who have developed courses in sport physiotherapy. The course content developer is the SPC member delivering the course. The Bank of Courses provide supplemental content to SPC credential program candidates. Courses are offered through the provincial sections and an up to date listing is available here (https://www.sportphysio.ca/events/).

CPA TELECONFERENCE PROGRAM & CONGRESS PROGRAMS Additional sport content is occasionally delivered by SPC in partnership with CPA. CPA Teleconference schedule is posted on the CPA website (www.physiotherapy.ca)

FIELD EXPERIENCES (REQU IRED) Link to: https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/program-resources-syllabus-marking-guide-learning-rubrics-log-book/

Field experience helps the physiotherapist to appreciate the demands and urgency involved with dealing with athletes. It gives the physiotherapist experience in dealing with the physiological demands and psychological aspects of the athletic population. Physiotherapists gain first-hand knowledge and direct observation of an athlete’s functional ability. This experience can then be used in the clinical setting to tailor the rehabilitation program for optimum training and return to sport progressions of the athlete.

Field Experience in contact sport gives the physiotherapist the understanding of the level of injury that can be sustained in contact sport and the importance of directing clinical assessment and treatment to optimizing return to sport. This would include recommendations in the areas of protective equipment, taping and bracing.

The SPC Certificate credential requires a minimum of 200 hours of field experience with at least 2 sports including 75 hours with each sport. One of the sports must be a contact or combative sport.

Page 16: SPC MENTOR HANDBOOK - sportphysio.ca · MENTOR WELCOME LETTER Welcome to the mentor handbook. The role of a mentor within the SPC ... Resource lists provide curriculum material in

WWW.SPORTPHYSIO.CA 16

16

The SPC Diploma credential requires a minimum of 200 hours of practical experience with at least 6 sports. With 2 of the sports involvement must extend over 2 full seasons, again with one being contact/combative.

Field experience can be supervised by the mentor or unsupervised. Supervision provides the candidate with direct feedback, probing questions that can immediately change practices, and identification of areas of weakness requiring future study. Unsupervised experience can be made more valuable by reviewing the candidates experiences recorded in the log book, jointly reflecting on cases, and providing feedback prior to a future field experience. Candidates may require substantially more than the minimum 200 hours to achieve the competencies outlined in the objectives for their credential. Ultimately field experiences will include a variety of sports, a variety of sporting situations, different age groups, different competition levels, different genders, and athletes of all ability levels.

LOG BOOKS/INTERIM REPORTS (REQUIRED) Link to LOG BOOKS: https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/program-resources-syllabus-marking-guide-learning-rubrics-log-book/

Candidates are provided with Log Books in the Credential Program Syllabus. The log can serve as a record of accumulated hours towards certification, a listing of sports covered and injuries seen, and a recording of physiotherapy services provided. Mentors can use the log books to review the candidate experiences to suggest future experiences to achieve the competencies required. They can also be a starting point for discussion on unsupervised field experiences between the mentor and the candidate. The regular submission of log books to the Mentor may be used as part of the Learning Contract (the exact submission schedule will be individualized based on volume and frequency of on-field work).

Log books are not submitted to SPC as a part of the application process for the Certificate or Diploma exam.

17

INTERIM REPORTS Candidates are provided with a template Candidate Interim Report to Mentor and a template Mentor Report in the Credential Program Syllabus. Mentors can create a learning contract with the candidate for these reports to be completed bi-annually or as agreed upon.

The Candidate’s Interim Report is a summary of the experiences the candidate has had since the last reporting period. It is a valuable tool if the candidate can relate their experiences to the curriculum objectives (example: managed a potential spinal injury in rugby, had multiple taping experiences in basketball tournament). This will allow the mentor to identify areas of knowledge of skill the candidate still needs experience with. Future field experiences can be directed to achieving these competencies.

The Mentor Report can assist the mentor with ensuring objectives have been met and directing the candidate to future experiences. Candidate weakness can be recorded and strategies for improvement can be planned.

Interim Mentor Reports are submitted as a part of the application process for the Certificate and Diploma exams.

Link to Interim Report and Mentor Report Templates https://www.sportphysio.ca/sportphysiou/spc-mentor-corner/program-resources-syllabus-marking-guide-learning-rubrics-log-book/

MOCK EXAMS (RECOMMENDED) It is recommended that candidates do a minimum of 1-2 mock exams prior to the oral-practical exam. This should include accurate timing of each station (following the times listed in the marking guide) with completion of all stations, in order, without breaks or feedback to best simulate the exam experience. If possible, the candidate should bring a non-physiotherapist to be the “patient” in the scenarios to limit any accidental assistance. If possible, the candidate should have a mock exam done by someone other than his/her primary mentor. A rate of $50/hr for 2 hours should be sufficient to complete a mock exam including time to review the feedback.
