OVERACHING CONSIDERATION
Effective use of accurate spatial information is a prerequisite for meeting the development and transformational needs of South Africa

SDIB seeks to regulate ONLY spatial
/ geographic information

• Achieve the use of accurate spatial information in support of effective and efficient development planning and governance.
• Develop a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for SA in accordance with international convention and trends
• To give effect to the constitutional and legislative provisions in respect to access to information
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

• 29 April 1999, Cabinet mandated the Department of Land Affairs to develop the required tools (legislative, technical, Institutional e.t.c.) in achieving this objective
• Prior to this, the Spatial Information sector was largely unregulated

• Promotion of access to spatial / geographic information
• Avoid duplication in gathering of spatial information (& associated costs)
• Develop technical standards to guide and govern the spatial information sector
• Establish the national Committee for Spatial Information
