SPARTANS IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Michigan State track & field concludes the 2016-17 season at the NCAA Championship June 7-10 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Spartans have a total of six entries with three on the women’s side and three on the men’s side.

“Our expectations don’t change much from meet to meet. We want them to go in and apply what they have learned and be fully engaged. We want them to be fearless, and not worry about the outcome, compete as well as they can compete. We have enough talent going to nationals that it could go well for us,” said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Walt Drenth.

At this year’s NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the men will compete on Wednesday, June 7 and Friday, June 9. The women take over on Thursday, June 8 and Saturday, June 10. The only overlap occurs in the combined events with the decathlon spilling over into Wednesday, and the heptathlon starting on Friday.

Junior Tim Ehrhardt will be the first Spartan in action on June 7 at 12:30 p.m. Ehrhardt earned All-American honors in the decathlon in 2015, finishing fifth. He earned a ca-reer-best 7,677 points en route to the fifth-place finish. Sophomore Justine Kiprotich (1,500m) and junior Noah Gary (pole vault) will also be in action on Wednesday. On Thursday, June 8 senior Hannah Sailar (pole vault) and junior Jade Madison (javelin) will compete. All-American junior Katelyn Daniels will begin action in the discus on the final day of competition on Saturday, June 10.

TRACK & FIELD NOTES

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::

1 | EXPERIENCED PERFORMERS Michigan State has a pair of All-Americans competing in the NCAA Champion-ships in juniors Katelyn Daniels and Tim Ehrhardt. Daniels has earned All-Amer-ican honor in the discus the last two seasons, including first-team honors in 2015. In 2016, Daniels set the MSU record in the discus with a throw of 60.54m. Fellow junior Tim Ehrhardt earned first-team All-American honors in the decathlon with a career-best 7,676 points in 2015.

“The comfort level with returning to Eugene makes a difference. Having a sense with what they are up against. Their presence at Nationals a number of times and at the Olympic Trials will help the other four Justin (Kiprotich), Hannah (Sailar), Noah (Gary) and Jade (Madison). They will all benefit from Katelyn and Tim’s experience,” Drenth said.

2 | EUGENE NEWCOMERSFour Spartans are making their first appearance in the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Justine Kiprotich, the Big Ten Champion in the 1,500m, will make his Hayward Field debut. In the pole vault, senior Hannah Sailar and junior Noah Gary are making their first appearance in the NCAA Finals. Junior Jade Madison had a strong performance in the javelin at the East Prelims to earn her first appear-ance in Eugene.

“We try to tell them to control the variables that they can control. Don’t get dis-tracted by things that you can’t control. Don’t try something new. Don’t become someone that you haven’t been all year. Those are the things we try to instill in them,” Drenth said.

3 | HISTORIC HAYWARDThis will be the 15th time that Hayward Field has been the site of the NCAA Out-door Track & Field Championships, more than any other venue in the history of the meet. As the unofficial home of track and field in the U.S., the NCAA will keep the annual championships in TrackTown USA through at least the 2021 season. Home to the University of Oregon track and field team, Hayward Field has played host to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 1962, 1964, 1972, 1984, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Eleven current men’s and women’s NCAA championship meet records have been set in Eugene.

4 | KIPROTICH CONTINUES HIS RISESophomore Justine Kiprotich had a stellar Big Ten Outdoor Championship, cap-turing the gold medal in the 1,500m with a time of 3:48.72. He was just shy of his personal best time of 3:42.36 at the Virginia Challenge in April. Kiprotich qualified first in the NCAA East Prelims with a time of 3:46.51. Overall, the sophomore is the top qualifier in the 1,500m just ahead of Indiana State’s David Timlin (3:46.81).

“He looks ready in practice, and he is ready to go. I think that he matures every week with his perspective of practice and what he needs. He is not afraid to train. This will be a different set of variables for him. He hasn’t been in races where there have been a whole bunch of guys that are as good as him if not better. It will be fun to see how he behaves. Being able to manage himself is going to be really critical,” Drenth said.

5 | VAULTING TO PROMINENCEThe Spartans will have a pair of pole vaulters competing in the NCAA Champion-ship in senior Hannah Sailar and junior Noah Gary. This will be the first appear-ance in the finals for both Sailar and Gary.

Sailar is seeded 22nd in the women’s pole vault. She qualified in Lexington with a vault of 4.10m. Her career best vault is 4.20m this season at the Louisville Invita-tional. Gary is the 21st seed in the pole vault. He set a collegiate best with a vault of 5.35m en route to capturing the Virginia Challenge title. He qualified for the finals with a vault of 5.25m in Lexington.
