WELCOME
We are proud to be a leading specialist college,
recognised locally, regionally, nationally and even
internationally for providing exceptional specialised
further and higher education in animal, land, environment,
sports and sustainable technologies.
The support we give our students, both residential
and non-residential, is second to none. Ofsted agree,
awarding us ‘OUTSTANDING’ for our residential
provision for the second time running. In 2014 Ofsted
also inspected our education standards and rated all our
curriculum areas either ‘GOOD’ or ‘OUTSTANDING’ - which is testament to the high
standards of teaching and the knowledge and expertise of our dedicated staff.
Our facilities are equally impressive, with a brand new £2.7 million sports centre and
new engineering and motor vehicle workshops opened in September 2014 providing
all the latest industry equipment for our students. The rest of our state-of-the-art
facilities provide students with real and relevant industry experience to prepare them for
university and employment.
Our staff are experts in their field – sharing their skills, knowledge and industry links with
our students who are eager to learn and follow their passion into a career.
Please come and visit the campus at one of our open days, where you will meet our
tutors and be able to tour our beautiful grounds. We are sure you will be as impressed
as we are.

WHY SPARSHOLT?
Sparsholt Industry Experts
You may have already heard of many of the staff at
Sparsholt but not realise they are the people who will
be teaching you day to day at College. With their high
profiles you may have spotted articles by Charles Smith
- Jones in the Shooting Times, seen Leon Fisher in CC
Moore videos about carp, or read about Andy Beer and
his world leading work with pandas. Our staff are very
involved in their specialist industries - they won’t just be
teaching you about the theory and practical elements
of your course, but also how the industry works, giving
you an insight that will prepare you for your career.
Having links with industry provides Sparsholt students with the opportunity to undertake work
placements, special projects and get involved in many aspects of the industry that aren’t available
elsewhere. Whether this is winning a gold medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, taking part in workshops
with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or working on a royal estate, our students gain
experience and knowledge that gives them the edge when applying for jobs in the future.

WHY SPARSHOLT?
Sparsholt Winners
Each year we celebrate our students’ outstanding achievements. We are extremely proud of their energy
and enthusiasm and the many activities they participate in both at college and when they leave.
This year our students have won everything
from national football trophies and inter-college equine competitions to producing
award winning milk and sausages, and of
course the coveted Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. They have been in
the media – raising the profile of horticulture
to young people, going to Gambia to learn
about different cultures and touring South
Africa to experience big game animals –
the variety is enormous. And on top of all
this they have successfully completed their
courses, gaining places at top universities
and employment with national and
international organisations.

whole workforce, enabling staff development
and training.

more than 35 Apprenticeship programmes across
a range of sectors. New programmes are being
developed all the time so we are sure we can help
you get started with your career now.

links with local and national companies

find a vacancy
• Contact local companies and see if they are
hiring and willing to take on an Apprentice

programmes). You will be assessed on evidence
accumulated in the workplace and you will need

Apprentices for a career that could lead to a

_ FACILITIES AND THE FUTURE _
The College FarmOur working farm is set within 300 hectares of
Hampshire countryside, providing a real work
environment for training and skills development.
There are a number of farm units that operate on a
commercial basis and students undertake regular
farm duties as part of their course.
Sheep and Lamb ProductionThe sheep flock comprises 300 breeding ewes, with students being
involved in their handling, husbandry, shearing and management,
including the highly successful annual Lambing Weekend.
Pig UnitThe indoor pig unit meets the highest welfare standards and houses 130
breeding mainly pedigree sows, boars, and their offspring, who are reared for
bacon. Artificial insemination is used to bring in new genetics, and we rear all
our own replacement sows and boars. This enables students to get involved in
all aspects of indoor pig breeding, production, handling, and management.
Dairy and Beef Unit
Our 100 Friesian cows are milked in a three-sided Fulwood Tribone parlour using
the latest technology and bulk milk storage. Students are involved in the grassland
management, cattle husbandry, management and milking activities. The livestock
are fed on forage crops grown on the farm and the grazing land. Students get
involved in all aspects of beef production including rearing dairy replacements.

engineering workshop. This adds to the other specialist workshops already in
use covering areas such as welding and fabrication, machinery diagnostics and
maintenance. Students have the opportunity to work on and investigate a wide
range of tractors and other large and small land-based machinery.
Arable ProductionHampshire is a predominantly arable county, and students develop machinery and
cultivation skills as a core strand of their course. This includes skills development on
the home farm, but also on neighbouring farms to provide a breadth of experience.
Students have the opportunity to train in various aspects of machinery maintenance.
With its own Farm Office students learn about the records and financial data

TAUGHT BY EXPERTS
Martin Edwards - Gamekeeping LecturerMartin studied Agriculture and Environmental Science at
Newcastle University and has taught hundreds of gamekeeping
students (some of whom are now head keepers on prestigious
estates across the country.) He also enjoys deer stalking and
manages roe deer on two local estates.
The Game and Wildlife CentreOfficially opened in 2011 the Game and Wildlife Centre provides industry standard
facilities to practise all aspects of game rearing and game meat processing. The
rearing facility includes an egg store, incubator and hatchery, along with an indoor
rearing area for winter quail rearing projects. A game larder, cold store and preparation
room give students first-hand experience of larder and game meat processing work
and allow them to follow deer and game from the field to fork.
Rifle and Shooting RangeWe have an indoor .22 Rifle range, a clay shooting site and secure gun armoury. In addition to this, students also complete their rifle and shooting skills development by using an external shooting range. Involvement in deer stalking and local shoots helps to develop an understanding of the importance of robust systems of health and safety management.

_ FINANCIAL SUPPORT _
There are various means of funding your expenses in attending college which include:
16-18 Bursary Fund
Applicants who meet certain criteria will be
eligible for a government bursary of up to £1,200
to help them meet the costs of coming to
College as enrolled students. These are students
who are:
• in receipt of income support
• in care
• leaving care
• in receipt of both ESA (Employment Support
Allowance) and DLA (Disability Living
Allowance)
Residential Bursary
This means-tested bursary is intended to assist
students who need to live at College because
daily travel is impractical. As a general rule, to
qualify for funding:
• your daily journey needs to be in excess of one
hour each way per day and you do not live on a
College travel route
• you are living in College or
rented accommodation, and
• comparable local provision is not available
within 15 miles of your home
_ FEES _
Under 19 years
UK and EEA (subject to residency requirements)
students do not pay tuition fees or examination
fees for government funded further education
courses, as long as they are under 19 years of age
on 31st August in the year they start their course.
19 years and over
If you are over 19 years, you will normally need
to pay for exams, registration and tuition fees.
However, you may be eligible for free tuition
depending on the course you wish to study,
the qualifications you already have and your
financial circumstances. Students aged 24 or
over, studying a Level 3 or 4 course can apply
for a loan to cover the cost of tuition. Please
contact Student Finance for more information
on 01962 797267.
Refunds
In normal circumstances, if a student withdraws
from their course prior to completion of the
course, there will be no refund of any fee. If
payment is made by instalments, any outstanding
amounts will continue to be taken.
Extra-curricular Activities Fee
All students – whether they pay their tuition and
examination fees or not – are required to pay
the Extra curricular activities fee (£70 in 2014/15,
outdoor adventure students are required to pay
a higher fee of £350 due to the nature of the
activities.) This contributes towards the provision
of the many extra-curricular activities offered by
the College.
(Figures indicated are correct at the time of
publication (September 2014) and may be subject
to change.)

Hardship/Learner Support Funds
If you are 16-18 and do not qualify for the 16-18
bursary fund, or if you are 19+, the College also
has a discretionary fund which can help those
in financial hardship. This fund can help with
the costs of travel, books and equipment and
any other cost which may become a barrier for
you being able to attend College. The fund is
‘means tested’ and based on the family household
income. As a rule, if your household income is
below £20,000 you will be able to receive some
financial help. For students with a household
income between £20,000 and £30,000 there
may still be help available depending on your
circumstances.
24+ Bursary Fund
Students who are 24+ and studying a Level 3 or
above can access the 24+ College bursary fund
as long as they have taken out a tuition fee loan.
This bursary is means tested and can help with
accommodation, exam/registration fees, travel,
books and equipment and childcare costs.
Army FE Bursary Scheme
If you are interested in joining the Army you could
be eligible to earn up to a £4,000 cash award to
help you through your studies. This is for students
who have completed their Phase 1 Training in
the British Army who are studying a Level 2 or
higher qualification. This equates to £1,000 for
completing the Phase 1 Army training and then a
further £1,000 for each year you spend at college
(maximum 3 years).
You will have a dedicated Army contact to offer
advice and encouragement whenever you need
it as well as the support provided by your tutor.
The Army also offers work experience, giving
you the best opportunities for preparation and
development. For further information contact
your local Army Careers Office or Army Careers
Adviser. (Details can be found at http://www.
army.mod.uk/training_education/25683.aspx)
Career Development Loan
If you are 19 or over, are liable to pay fees, and
are not eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning
Loan, you can apply for a career development
loan to pay for your fees. This is a bit like a bank
loan except you do not start repaying it until your
course has finished. For more information call
0800 100 900 or visit https://www.gov.uk/career-
development-loans/overview.
Childcare Support
If you are under 20 and have a child you may
be eligible for assistance from the Care to Learn
scheme. Further details can be found at https://
www.gov.uk/care-to-learn/overview or from the
National Careers Service.
If you are 20+ and have a household income
of less than £30,000 childcare support may be
available from the College learner support funds.
Childcare providers must be Ofsted registered
and proof of expenditure is required. Payments
are only made if you have full attendance for any
week and are not made during holiday periods.
Further details on all the above schemes are
available from the Student Finance Team in
Student Administration on 01962 797267.

_ OTHER FINANCIAL SERVICES _
Whilst students are responsible for fees and
invoices related to their course we do offer an
interest free, ten monthly instalment payment
plan by prior arrangement to help spread the cost.
It is also recognised that a number of students,
both prospective and current, encounter financial
difficulties so the Student Finance Team in
Student Administration (01962 797267) is always
available to offer information, advice and possible
solutions. The College also endeavours to gather
information on local part-time employment
which may be helpful to some students.
Payment of Fees
All students who are subject to payment
of fees are invoiced for these at or before
enrolment and you will be expected to pay
these fees immediately unless you have made
arrangements to pay in instalments. The College
offers an interest free instalment plan over a 10
month period.
Students who are unable to pay invoices on the
required dates must speak to a member of the
Finance Team who will be happy to assist by
negotiating payment plans.
Alternatively, please do contact Student Finance
who will be able to advise students on various
sources of funding.
Talk to us first
If you are experiencing financial difficulty that
may force you to withdraw your application to
your chosen course please discuss your situation
with the Student Finance team before making any
decisions. Call on 01962 797267.
