SUMMER  PROJECTS  SOUTHERN  AFRICA  AND  SPAIN  COOPERATION

OPPORTUNITIES  IN  MOZAMBIQUE

THE  COUNTRY:  There   are   so  many   things   yet   to  be  discovered   about   Mozambique   in  the   African   Continent.   With   a  colonial   history   and   diverse  Geographical   topography,  Mozambique   is   a   unique   place.  Human   knowledge   about  Mozambique  dates  back   to   the   first  Millennium

Mozambique   culture   has   survived   decades   of   colonialism   which   had   a   deep   effect   on   the  Mozambican  people.  Mozambique  enjoys  a  vast  range  of  cultural  and  linguistic  diversity.  There  are  variety   of   cultures   clustered   together   like   Swahili   language   speaking   group,   Islamic   culture   and  Bantu-‐speaking  groups  living  in  northern  and  central  regions.

About  Mozambique:  http://www.mozambiquetourism.co.za/

AIESEC  IN  MOZAMBIQUE:

AIESEC   in   Mozambique   was   an   initiative   that

began   in   2008.   With   the   support   of   Brazil   as   a  country   partner,   the   Expansion   Initiative   was  approved  at  IPM  in  Rome  in  February  2009.  From

there,   things   moved   quickly   and   at   IC   2009   in  Kuala  Lumpur,  Malaysia,  Mozambique  become  an  official  AIESEC  expansion.

The   Expansion   Team   arrived   in   October   2009.

Since  July  2010  the  new  MC  team  is  in  Maputo  and  now  there  are  two  LCs  running  in  the  capital  of  Maputo,  with  more  than  50  members

AIESEC   UEM   operates   out   of   the   largest   public   university   in   Mozambique,   University   of   Eduardo  Mondlane,  while  AIESEC  ISCTEM  is  based  in  a  small  but  well  regarded  private  institute.

SOCIAL  CONTEXT:    Mozambique  weathered  the  global  financial  crisis  relatively  well,  maintaining  strong,  if  lower  growth  than  in  2008  while  inflation  was  subdued.  The  limited  exposure  of  the  country’s  banking  system  to  international   financial   markets   minimized   the   direct   impact   of   the   global   crisis.     Supportive  government  measures,   such   as   fuel   subsidies,   helped   sustain   growth   together  with   an   increase   in  agricultural  output.    The   government’s   poverty   reduction   policy   sets   targets   in   line  with   the  Millennium  Development  Goals  (MDGs).    While  progress  is  evident  in  some  of  the  MDGs,  Mozambique  is  unlikely  to  halve  the  proportion   of   those   suffering   from   hunger   by   2015   (MDG1)   because   of   drought,   floods   and  structural   constraints.     Poverty   levels   in  Mozambique   remain  high   in   spite   of   the   sustained   strong  GDP   growth   over  most   of   the   past   decade.     In   the   south   and   central   regions,   the   population   still  suffers  from  food  insecurity  due  to  structural  constraints    More  Information:    http://www.africaneconomicoutlook.org/en/countries/southern-‐africa/mozambique/
