Pep Carrió & Isidro FerrerPep Carrió and Isidro Ferrer are prolific and influential designers in Spain. Both have exhibited extensively and have won numerous awards including Graphis poster Annual Gold Awards and Golden Label Award (Austria) and Bronze, Film Festival Posters (US).

Under the direction of Pep Carrió, Estudio Pep Carrió has created notable designs for Camper Shoes, Canal+ and the Bank of Spain. His portfolio includes a prestigious list of cultural institutions and private corporations. Carrió’s illustration and graphic design work has included exhibition catalog design, national festival posters and company branding and identity. Highly regarded, he speaks regularly about graphic design through classes, workshops and local media.

Isidro Ferrer initiated a career change to graphic design after a profession in drama and set design. Since then his body of work, which embraces surrealism in everyday objects, has garnered attention in national design circles including work for Random House UK.

In order to show the neighborly relationship between Spain and Portugal in this cover, the artists have used two “stereotypical” and recognizable ceramics, prototypes of popular culture and craftsmanship of both countries, to form a single object that humorously combines values of each nation. Both objects, the Spanish jug and the Portuguese rooster, lend themselves to this game of transformation, adding meaning without losing any of their aesthetic and functional values in the process.

Wondering what is that funny-looking

creature staring at you from our cover? We like to call it botigallo, or perhaps gallijo, a hybrid born out of the Portuguese galo (a legendary rooster) and the traditional Spanish botijo (an earthenware water jug). As its sources of inspiration, it was carefully handcrafted by Spanish designers Pep Carrió and Isidro Ferrer to illustrate the fantastic IBERIAN SUITE: global arts remix festival that will open at the Kennedy Center on March 3.

Both Spain and Portugal are old countries, shaped through the centuries by geography and by the different cultures that found home in the Iberian Peninsula: layers upon layers of civilizations creating a unique blend, very much like a beautiful ceramic taking shape.

The IBERIAN SUITE festival will feature all this diversity in a spectacular program that will bring to DC the very best of Spanish and

Portuguese creativity, and trace its everlasting influence across the globe. Among other wonders, the public will be able to experience the

wonderful ceramics of Picasso, the contemporary flamenco of Sara Baras and María Pagés, the renewed legacy of Spanish classic

theater, the singular harmony of our musical heritage, and the imagination of writers such as Cercas, Ruiz Zafón,

and Muñoz Molina. Coinciding with the festival, a luxurious selection of Spanish contemporary crafts

will be on view in our own headquarters. We are certain that this will one amazing three-week-

long celebration that DC won’t forget!

The next international festival at the Kennedy Center, IBERIAN SUITE: global arts remix will take place March 3 - 24, 2015 and will highlight the magnificence of the arts and culture of Spain and Portugal. It will also illustrate the impact their heritage has had around the world and the global influences the peninsula has embraced.

The King and Queen of Spain were Royal patrons who financed some of the first global expeditions in the 15th century. The story of these navigators is the narrative of world human history- marked by war and conquest, triumph and tragedy. But ultimately, what endures is the outpouring of creativity and intelligence that is civilization’s greatest gift. From Iberia, that which inspires us and brings us into an encounter with the majesty of art and culture is what we seek for this festival.

On several trips to Spain to various regions, I was able to meet the people and experience the art and culture of this country. From Barcelona to Madrid to Bilbao to Granada, to Sevilla, my team and I were able to see and put into context the work of artists, architects, chefs, writers, and performers of all stripes to choose those that would participate in the festival. We are forever changed by this experience and are excited to share our discoveries with audiences who will come to the Kennedy Center or visit us online. Through all of the performing arts, visual and literary arts, architecture and design we will take you on a spectacular journey that you can taste, see, and participate in the creativity of Iberia. An exclusive exhibition of Picasso ceramics, music of Buika and flamenco dance of Sara Baras, and a special performance of ballet dancer Angel Corella are just some of the artists that will comprise the vibrant panorama of artists that will participate.

“The leading innovator of modern flamenco” (The New York Times), Spain-based dancer and choreographer María Pagés brings the U.S. premiere of her 2011 work Utopía for her company’s Kennedy Center debut. Drawing from her personal and artistic inspirations, Utopía was inspired by Portuguese writer José Saramago and Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, and includes a group of flamenco dancers joining Pagés along with several musicians on stage.

Hailed as a “formidable dancer” by London’s The Guardian, fiery international flamenco superstar Sara Baras makes her Kennedy Center debut with a D.C. premiere. This sizzling new work is danced by Baras, guest artist José Serrano, and other members of her ensemble, all joined on stage by several incredible flamenco musicians.

For the first half of this double-bill program, María Muñoz, Artistic Director of Spain’s Mal Pelo dance company, brings the U.S. premiere of her evocative 2004 solo piece, Bach. Performed to Glenn Gould’s recording of J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Muñoz “draws us into a series of concentrated attempts to ‘catch’ the music,” says London’s The Guardian. The second half of the program brings “one of the premier modern dance companies in Mexico” (The Washington Post). Tania Pérez-Salas Compañía de Danza returns with Made in Mexico xx, a new work featuring interwoven images rooted in Pérez-Salas’s perspective as a Mexican artist with a score representing a collage of Mexican composers.

Founded in 1995, Madrid’s acclaimed theater company makes its U.S. debut with a revival of one of its first productions. An entremés is a short, comedic one-act play historically performed as an interlude during a long dramatic work in the 16th and 17th centuries in Spain. This engagement features three entremeses written by Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes: El Retablo de las Maravillas, La Cueva de Salamanca, and El Viejo Celoso. tReS pABLoS: cASALS, neRudA, And picASSo – A muLtimediA ceLeBRAtion

An intimate tribute to three giants and contemporaries of the Spanish-speaking world, Casals, Neruda and Picasso, all of whom died in the same year, 1973. The event includes videos of all three artists, as well as live music and interviews. Moderated by distinguished author and critic Marie Arana, the evening features Julia Alvarez, a best-selling Dominican-American novelist, poet, essayist, and lifelong admirer of Pablo Neruda; Marilyn McCully, eminent art historian and foremost scholar on the life and works of Picasso; and Marta Casals Istomin, the Puerto Rican music impresario, educator and widow of Pablo Casals. The evening will close with a musical program, featuring pieces that Casals often played on his Matteo Goffriller cello (circa 1700). Casals’ cello will be played by the Israeli-American virtuoso Amit Peled and accompanied by students from the Peabody Institute.

In a program that celebrates the stunning diversity of Spanish- and Portuguese-language writers, as well as the many resonances they share, this is a veritable symphony of voices from the past as well as the present. Contemporary writers from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal talk about their work amidst echoes from their literary predecessors. Juan Gabriel Vásquez of Colombia (with Gabriel García Marquez), Javier Cercas of Spain (with Pedro Salinas), Cesar Aira of Argentina (with Jorge Luis Borges), Dulce María Cardoso of Portugal (with Jorge Amado), Alonso Cueto of Peru (with Mario Vargas Llosa), and Carmen Boullosa of Mexico (with Octavio Paz). The event is hosted by the distinguished Canadian translator Anne McLean.

Two wordsmiths who know the language of Cervantes as few do share their knowledge of the literary master. Edith Grossman, the award-winning American translator of novels by Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, and many other celebrated figures, including Cervantes himself, will talk about the intricate ties between Cervantes, Faulkner, and García Márquez. Eduardo Lago, a novelist and literary critic who has directed the Cervantes Institute in New York, will talk about the cultural legacy of the Spanish language.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Antonio Muñoz Molina, two of the most successful contemporary novelists in the Spanish language, talk about how the literary traditions of Spain have shaped their work. Zafón’s wildly imaginative fantasy tales and Muñoz Molina’s gritty historical novels could be said to represent opposite sides of the literary spectrum, and yet both approaches to the art can be described as deeply Spanish. Moderating the discussion is American editor and critic Valerie Miles.

Picasso Ceramist and the Mediterranean is a carefully curated selection of more than 140 of Pablo Picasso’s ceramic pieces that reveal how the prolific artist reshaped the very notions of how clay could be used. Reflecting the artist’s strong attraction to Mediterranean colors, shapes, and mythological creatures, the exhibition is the first of its kind to be shown in the United States. During Picasso’s long career, he explored many forms of visual art: painting, sculpture, lithography, etching, collage, stage and costume design, poetry, and ceramics. He initially experimented with clay in 1900, but it was during the years after World War II that he developed an intense interest in the medium. At the time, he lived in southern France, where clay deposits had been exploited since pre-Roman times. During his lifetime, he produced some 4,500 plates, vessels, and other ceramic creations.

This exhibition was originally conceived for “Marseille-Provence 2013,” the yearlong celebration of Marseille’s reign as Cultural Capital of Europe and presented in Aubagne. In 2014, the exhibition traveled to the National Museum of Ceramics in Sèvres, near Paris, where it was the most successful show in the museum’s history. It is curated by Joséphine Matamoros and Bruno Gaudichon, and is made possible by the generous participation of private collectors with the support of the Picasso Administration chaired by Claude Picasso.

Cutting-Edge Spanish Crafts invites you to discover contemporary crafts from Spain through a selection of objects by individual crafters and designers, industrial innovators, and large firms.

In the last four years, contemporary Spanish craftsmanship has experienced a great development, this being part of a global trend in a time of economic crisis that has manifested the unsustainability of the previous model of production. Mass and serial productions have provided a greater demand for unique and higher quality products, leading to a revitalization of the crafts industry.

This show displays internationally-recognized companies, manufacturers, and artisans like Loewe, Lladró, Cerabella, Apparatu, and Peseta among others.

Contemporary SpanISh CraftS are In Vogue

Most of us have an object or garment that we hold dear. Whether it is an antique, a gift, or an indispensable utensil of everyday use, chances are that the object is also a craft, or at least partly produced by an expert in the transformation of matter. In fact, many of the objects and structures that surround us are made through artisanal techniques.

The world of crafts is vast. Often times we might hold a handcrafted product in our hands without realizing it, simply drawn to it for its beauty or design. We speak generally of craftsmanship, but it is actually a sector that encompasses a very complex and diverse reality.

Spain produces crafts of excellent quality, as it is evidenced by their wide international acceptance. Yet in recent times, static consumption has led many small craft enterprises to resort to innovation, both broadly and transversally, as they search for new markets.

Innovation can occur in several fronts, including the technological. While it might seem somewhat contradictory to speak of technological innovation and crafts, technology can be used in various processes, ranging from the very design of a piece to its introduction in the market. Innovation can also occur through science; for instance, by researching new materials or rediscovering raw natural materials that combined with each other or with other materials can add new features, such as luminescence or waterproof qualities, to products. Other innovative efforts include monitoring the market to create new products that cater to the needs of today’s consumer, as well as reassessing current products to add new features or uses.

Many craft companies have focused their efforts on design and effective business management in order to ensure quality and competitiveness. Lladró is the paradigm of a business model that combines tradition and modernity in an exemplary manner,

both in its products as well as in the way it manages its business. Despite its massive international expansion, Lladró remains a company of artisanal production based in La Ciudad de la Porcelana (City of Porcelain), located in Tavernes Blanques (Valencia). More than a factory, it is a large-scale atelier.

Another striking case is that of Luesma & Vega, a design studio specializing in handmade glass tableware for haute cuisine. Restaurants such as El Bulli, El Celler de Can Roca, Diverxo, Arzak, Mugaritz and Azurmendi among others have commissioned the firm the design and production of special pieces to present their culinary creation.

In the twentieth century, Loewe made exceptional progress thanks to how it dodged history’s vicissitudes and adapted to each new era, opting for products of great craftsmanship made with high-quality leather. Additionally, Loewe has collaborated with local artisans, including leather artisans from Ubrique and the basket maker Idoia Cuesta, who introduced the firm to the traditional basket-making techniques that were used to make the Galicia bag collection.

As mentioned above, many Spanish craft enterprises have focused on design to overcome this period of economic stagnation, opting for products characterized by originality. Enric Majoral, recipient of the 2007 Premio Nacional de Artesanía (National Crafts Award), has experimented to develop collections that are the expression of a modern jewelry style that combines innovative materials and unorthodox techniques.

Cerabella, a handmade candle factory created in 1862, is an example of the inclusion of design and collaboration as core values. Since the 1990s, the firm has been collaborating with eminent figures from the creative sector such as as André Ricard, Javier Mariscal, Óscar Tusquets and Toni Miró, and more recently with Sybilla or Jordi Labanda.

In fact, many craft enterprises have capitalized on collaborating with related and complementary sectors to offer products that cater to an increasingly demanding and specialized market. This is the case with Ceràmica Cumella, recipient of the 2009 Premio Nacional de Artesanía (National Crafts Award), which has recently been involved in ground breaking works from Spanish architecture, including the Spanish pavilion for the World Expo in Aichi, the roof of the Santa Caterina Market in Barcelona, and the facade of the Villa Nurbs.

We cannot fail to mention Teixidors, a textile cooperative that incorporates many of the aspects previously addressed. Teixidors has succeeded in creating natural products of unique design, exceptional craftsmanship, and high quality, which are now sold throughout the world thanks to new technologies. Additionally, these textile products are made by people with intellectual disabilities. This entrepreneurial artisanal project that promotes the inclusion of disabled people into society and into the workforce has received numerous awards, including the 2008 Premio Nacional de Artesanía (National Crafts Award).

It is true that small craft enterprises cannot compete, in terms of price and productivity, with assembly-line products manufactured in countries with lower labor costs. However, by offering products of quality and unique design, and by exploring new markets, Spanish crafts have found new customers throughout the world.

Sagrada famíliaGaudí’s Unfinished masterpiece

The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York is hosting a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of La Sagrada Família, the magnum opus of Antoni Gaudí, the father of Catalan Modernisme. This is the only time that such a demonstration of Gaudí’s genius will be featured on American soil. Many institutions have vied for this singular opportunity, and City College is honored to offer this extraordinary experience to New York City. It includes several architectural models and casts used in its construction, and showcases the 3D computer imaging software used to analyze and draw precise tridimensional geometry.

The exhibit, titled Sagrada Família — Gaudí’s Unfinished Masterpiece: Geometry, Construction and Site, is on view in the Atrium Gallery.

A once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of La Sagrada Família, the magnum opus of Antoni Gaudí, the father of Catalan Modernisme.

Félix Candela Outeriño rocked the field of architecture with his reinforced concrete structures -better known as “shells” - which he built in the 1950s and 1960s. Candela’s originally European construction technology rapidly took off in Mexican soil, and even though he was not the only architect to design these types of structures, he broke new ground by using the hyperbolic paraboloid profusely and with great virtuosity.

This exhibition, curated by architect Juan Ignacio del Cueto Ruiz-Funes, covers a span of time that ranges from Candela’s period of international expansion represented by the Cosmic Rays Pavilion, up to the Palacio de los Deportes, built for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.

The Spanish initiative Inteligencias Colectivas participates in the project Uneven Growth, where MoMA examines new architectural possibilities that address the rapid and unequal evolution of cities around the globe.

In this exhibition MoMA has brought together six teams of researchers and practitioners who have studied how emergent forms of tactical urbanism can respond to alterations in the nature of public space, housing, mobility, spatial justice, environmental conditions, and other major issues in near-future urban contexts.

Empresario Juan Abelló and his wife, Anna Gamazo, have spent thirty years building one of the top private collections in Spain, a gathering of the finest and rarest of masterpieces by Spanish artists and international modern masters spanning five centuries. This exhibition presents approximately 70 highlights from their painting collection, including works by Francis Bacon, Georges Braque, Canaletto, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Edgar Degas, Francisco Goya, El Greco, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso and Jusepe de Ribera. This marks the first time that this wholly private collection is the sole focus of an exhibition, and the Meadows Museum is its sole American venue. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered hat (El sombrero de tres picos) commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century.

For more than half a century, the curtain, believed to be the largest Picasso painting in the world, has hung in the hallway of the Four Seasons Restaurant, in the landmarked Seagram Building, designed by Mies van der Rohe, in New York. Vivendi, the company that once owned the Seagram Building, gave the Picasso curtain to the New York Landmarks Conservancy and it’s now being relocated to the New-York Historical Society.

A masterpiece of comic fiction, Cervantes’s Don Quixote (fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha) enjoyed great popularity from the moment it was published, in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615. Reprints and translations spread across Europe, captivating the continental imagination with the escapades of the knight Don Quixote and his companion, Sancho Panza. The novel’s most celebrated episodes inspired a multitude of paintings, prints, and interiors. Most notably, Charles Coypel (1694−1752), painter to Louis XV, created a series of twenty-eight paintings (also called cartoons) to be woven into tapestries by the Gobelins manufactory in Paris.

In 2015 (the 400th anniversary of the publication of the second volume of Don Quixote), the Frick brings together a complete series of Coypel’s scenes, which will be shown in the Oval Room and East Gallery.

Moving Forward, Looking Back explores the Spanish legacy found along the Old Spanish Trail combining photography, video, and sound. This artistic project started in March 2014 with a road trip across the Southwest, USA, where visual artist Janire Najera followed the footsteps of trader Antonio Armijo, who in 1829/30 linked the outposts of New Mexico and California. Janire met and interviewed Spanish descendants along the route to understand how the traditions of the first settlers have merged with domestic cultures influencing in the creation and identity of today’s pueblos and cities, and also revealing some traces of the intangible heritage that remains across these states.

In Spring 2015 the first exhibition of the project will be opening in Washington, DC and a book about this journey will be also presented.

A project that explores the Spanish legacy found along the old Spanish Trail, a route that linked the colonial outposts of New Mexico and California.

This summer the exceptional group Giulia Valle Trio will be touring the U.S. and Canada showing the quality of Spanish Jazz.

Giulia Valle grew up in Barcelona, with a classical and modern background. Nowadays, she is considered a very special and unique voice in the contemporary jazz scene.

Over the past year, Giulia Valle has worked regularly within a trio, going against the wave of new projects that use a wider instrumentation, with the intention of presenting her musical discourse in a more concise and interactive manner. El Ritmo de las Palabras (The Rhythm of the Words) is a new series created by the CCEMiami that explores the relation between literature and music. The artists Concha Buika and Luis Eduardo Aute are the protagonists of this Spring season.

In February, the Spanish Grammy winning artist Concha Buika and her alter ego Kitailo will perform poems, stories and chants from her recent book, A los que amaron a mujeres difíciles y acabaron por soltarse (To those who loved difficult women and end up letting go).

In May, Spanish songwriter Luis Eduardo Aute will present his poetry anthology Volver al Agua (Return to the water). Aute practices numerous disciplines of the arts. He is a musician and a writer, but also a painter and a filmmaker, having directed several short films and a feature film.

Toronto audiences will discover that love has a sense of humour with the COC’s new production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville from the Spanish theatre troupe Els Comediants. In this opera, the Spaniards take on Rossini’s greatest comedy and their cubist-inspired set plays with scale and proportion, while bursts of day-glo colour and innovative lighting conjure a fantasy world hovering between fairytale and vaudeville.

The wily barber Figaro is sung by Canadian Joshua Hopkins, “an outstanding young baritone with a virile, vigorous yet velvety sound and an immediately evident dramatic authority” (Globe and Mail). Count Almaviva, the young suitor that Figaro assists, is American Alek Shrader, noted as “possibly one of the most exciting young tenors on the planet” (Seen and heard International). The role of the charming heroine Rosina is shared by two exciting mezzo-sopranos, Italian Serena Malfi and American Cecelia Hall.
