History of Spain

The history of Spain is the story of the

many different peoples who have lived in the

Iberian peninsula, especially in what today is

Spain. It spans from prehistoric Iberia. the

Middle Ages, through the rise and decline of a

global empire, to the recent history of Spain as

a member of the European Union. Modern

humans entered the Iberian Peninsula about

32,000 years ago. Different populations and

cultures followed over the millennia, including

the Iberians, the Tartessians, Celts and

Celtiberians, Phoenicians, Greeks,

Carthaginians, Romans, Suebi and Visigoths.

Holiday & Festivals OF SPAINPublic holidays celebrated in Spain include a mix ofreligious (Roman Catholic), national and regional observances. Each municipality is allowed to have a maximum of 14 public holidays per year; a maximum of nine of these are chosen by the national government and at least two are chosen locally.

Culture of SpainArts and Music

Basques have a long musical tradition of unaccompanied choirs, and a popular choir contest is held annually in Tolosa. Musical instruments associated with Basque folk music include the txistu (or high flute), tambourine and drums, and the txalaparta, which is similar to a wooden xylophone. Goldsmithing, along with working with silver and other precious metals, has a long history in the Basque Country.

Football is by far the most popular team sport in Spain. Spain boasts some of the biggest and best sporting football clubs in Europe. The sports season for football in Spain starts in September and runs through until the middle or end of May. Every week more than 300,000 people in Spain flock to the countries dozens of sports stadiums to watch Spanish football league games. Millions of people in Spain love to watch this sport on television.

This is especially so when two major rival sporting clubs meet such as Barcelona and Real Madrid. Football league matches in Spain occur on the weekends, while several European and cup matches take place in Spain mid-week.
