The Exec Elections are Back... We give you the low-down on the results.

What’s all this then..?

Who cares?

For a lot of students, their first encounter with the Exec Elections at Birmingham City University is when a complete stranger runs up to them with a flyer, urging them to vote for a candidate. The only way to get the campaigners to leave you alone is to go and vote straightaway.

Even then, do you even know why you’re voting other than to get that overenthusiastic person off your back?! Joking aside, the process of the Exec Elections is a very important process within the Students Union, if not the most important.

It is the role of the five Full-Time and twelve Part-Time Executive Officers to lead the Students’ Union. The Full-Time Exec are fully employed directors of the company, in their graduating year or taking a year out, to lead the Union through their specific roles. The Part-Time Exec also set the direction for the Union but this is voluntary and undertaken alongside their studying. They have to answer to the student body which technically makes you guys their bosses. If they

aren’t sticking to their promises or not representing you to the best of their ability, you have the right to hold them to account. This way, the Union remains student-led and a representational body for BCU students. The Exec are elected by the students. Maybe you don’t agree with what one candidate pledges or you really support the manifesto ideas of another. The only way to help ensure the Union is run in your best interests is to vote. Simple.

The Exec Elections are Back... We give you the low-down on the results.

When and how can I do this one day? Becoming an Executive Officer is a brilliant opportunity and as long as you’re a current student at Birmingham City University, you can run in the Exec Elections. There are several different positions depending on your interests. For instance, if you’re a student studying at Gosta Green and you want to ensure students from your campus get their voice heard or you feel the Union should be doing more for students at Gosta Green, then standing for the position of Gosta Green Campus Officer would be the next logical step! On the other hand, if you’re a mature student and feel strongly about the issues affecting mature students at university then there’s the position of Mature and Postgraduate Students Officer. This looks great on your CV and gives you the opportunity to start new or collaborate on Union projects, set the direction for the Union, ensue that all student demographics are represented and provide BCU students the best possible time at University. With the Part-Time positions, the hours are very flexible and what you put into the role is really what you get out. There is also a fully supportive staff team and funding available to help you deliver your goals. There’s also other perks such as

free guest list entry into certain events (plus, you get a nice hoody with your name on it!). Elections normally happen around February time but the Union will be running a by-election for the following Part-Time Officer positions in the near future. Ethnic Minority Students OfficerLGBT Students OfficerMature and Postgraduate Students OfficerBournville Campus OfficerCity South Campus OfficerConservatoire Campus OfficerGosta Green Campus OfficerMargaret Street Campus OfficerMillennium Point Campus OfficerVittoria Street Campus Officer

News Elections

And the Winners Are...

PresidentRobin Eves

It was impossible to tell at any point who was going to win. Each day felt different in

terms of response from the students so I don’t think any of us knew.

Both my competitors were great guys and had a lot of support behind them. It was very tense up to the last minute. I’m not sure it will all kick in until I start.

I really enjoyed the campaigning. My whole campaign team worked really hard and I wouldn’t be in this position without them. If anyone gets an opportunity in the future to take part, in any way, I’d definitely advise it.

I’d like to be able to say I had a part in making the Union accessible to all our students, no matter who they are. Currently not enough students understand the role of The Students’ Union, some don’t even know it exists!

There was a fair few students who believed we would only campaign for two weeks on their campus and then forget about them. This seemed to be the main reason people weren’t voting, if anything that’s one of the main reasons students should vote. If they start by showing an interest in The Union then they know who to question if we’re not doing our jobs.

The moment the results were announced left me literally lost for words. It was so hectic! People were being thrown in hay everywhere. If anyone finds the shirt I was wearing that night, I’d love to get it back.

The Full-Time Exec

We caught up with the 2011/2012 Exec election winners to find out what it felt like to have won, what they wanted to do during their time in office, why they think the Exec Elections are an important part of university life and how they celebrated their victory.

Rocky Thomson

I wasn’t sure who would win but I knew it would be a close election. I’m delighted that I got

elected but also relieved!

I had a lot of fun during the two weeks and it gave me the chance to get to know next years Execs better.I want to get the Media Groups to a point where they can become a ma-jor part of student routine - reporting events, issues and more.

It’s important students vote because, put simply, if you don’t vote then you can’t complain about the SU. I admit I was really nervous on election night, but after the results I enjoyed myself thoroughly – even with the itchy hay!

Oeiisha Williams

I kind of expected to win because I was only up against R.O.N. I was still very nervous!

Through campaigning I learnt to be confident in new situations and

enjoyed talking to new people. One of my aims is to continue the support for course and faculty reps to liaise about the successes and ideas throughout the university for improvements.

The elections allow students to choose the person that they think will make the best changes for everyone.I enjoyed the elections night! I am planning a celebration party to thank my campaign team and everyone that helped me along the way!!

Mobashar Mahmood

Yes, I did think I was going to be elected; as I believe I was the man for the job as proved in my strong

manifesto. I’m still buzzing from the win.

I enjoyed campaigning as I made

mine all fun. So instead of being stressed, it was all fun, fun, fun!I would strive to reach my utmost best to ensure my pledges are met to ensure a smooth running of the Students’ Union.

Every voice does matter! Elections come round once a year therefore students have a chance to make a difference by voting.

I spent my victory with my campaign team and all my friends who supported me throughout and finishing up at the sensational Bar 42.

Campus Engagement OfficerElgan Hughes

I wasn’t expecting to win at all, I just hoped it would be close. I suppose that explained

the sheer feeling of happiness when I won.

Looking back I can say that it was one of the most stressful but rewarding things I’ve ever done. And I’ve learned that I can cope very well under pressure.

It’s my aim to bring unity between all Campuses, and make sure that there is plenty of communication, events and opportunities at each campus.

It’s important that each student has their say about their university. And in the election they had that opportunity to elect candidates who they wanted to work together to run their Students’ Union.

Election night was an entertaining, memorable and a busy night; everything I remember about being a Fresher at this University. I celebrated the only way I knew how, surrounded by friends and snake-bite.

The Part-Time ExecEthical and Environmental Officer

Chris Moss

It was either me or R.O.N to choose from, so it didn’t feel as satisfying as I bet it did for other people

with competitors-haha!

I loved campaigning, it was fun talking to random students and getting them to see what they’d like to happen at the university.

I’d love to get all of my manifesto completed, that would be a great

achievement, and then I’ll see what other stuff people come up with.

Elections are part of democracy, wars have been fought for the protection of that! And plus, it’s just a great way to get you’re money’s worth whilst at uni, yeah you get a degree, but why not make sure you have fun getting someone good to run it.

I had a good few drinks down at Bar 42, drink responsibly everyone, and just spent the night with my mates. Then spent half an hour with my (sober) mate driving round Birmingham looking for a decent takeaway.

International Students OfficerTasmina Manzur

I worked very hard and got a good response from the students, hence I had confidence

that I would win. It feels amazing because 482 students supported me!!

Campaigning was a great experience for me; I had an opportunity to interact with the International and EU students from different cultures and got some feedback which I will work on.

During my time in office I want to receive appreciation for my work! Simply because I know I will work for all the students regardless of International, EU and home country status.

Elections explain your choice as I said [during the campaign]: It’s not the voting that’s democracy; it’s choosing the right person. It’s the best way to get your voice heard!!

I enjoyed election night to the ‘’FULLEST’’ !! The 4th March= the best moment of my abroad life and the best moment of my Uni life!!! I celebrated the night by screaming my voice out loud in the crowd and dancing with friends.

The NUS DelegatesTotal Vote 87Kat Higgs - 32 votesKirat Raj Singh - 30 votesWil Vincent - 24 votesBenjy Sanford - 17 votesR.O.N. - 7 votes

These guys have been elected to represent students at BCU at the National Union of Students (NUS) National Conference in April.

They will join hundreds of other student reps from all over the UK in voting on motions that set NUS’ policies and future direction. There

11

are two remaining positions available to BCU students.

These will be elected at Student Council on Tuesday 22nd March. See www.bitminghamcitysu.com/council for more info.

“The Union is Just a Bar”...

14

...a common misconception that simply isn’t true. A lot of the activities BCU students undertake are supported or organised by the Students’ Union, you just might not realise it!

Did you know that the Art Shop is part of the Students’ Union? Or the Advice Centre? Did you know that we’re independent from the University? Other outlets and operations we run include Freshers Week, the Union receptions and offices at all campuses, both Lounge cafés, The Village Inn, The Union Shop at City South, BCU clothing and merchandise and Birmingham City Student Homes; new independent lettings agency. Birmingham City Students’ Union is a not -for-profit organisation. Any profit made is reinvested to make your student life better. Every pound you spend in the Union bars, shops, on merchandise, and student groups goes back to the Union to provide services and facilities and improve your student experience.

This includes running the free and independent Advice Centre, Sports clubs and Societies, organising campaigns to fight for your rights, Media Groups, holding events and nights out and much more. We’re a student-led, democratic organisation. The Union Exec Officers are recent graduates or gap-year students who have been elected by the student body to lead the Students’ Union and represent your interests. Student Council and AGM is the Union’s highest governing body meaning that the students have the best say in what goes on. With so many ways to get involved with the Union- Just a bar? I don’t think so.

We Want Your Letters!

News You Got Mail!

Your letters here!

In a recent survey carried out across BCU, we asked students what they would like to see more of in Spaghetti Junction. The top answer came out as ‘Letters Pages’. So, ladies and gents, we present to you our brand new letters page! Obviously it’s a little bare at the minute though, as none of you have had chance to write in yet… You can write in about anything you like. Maybe you’re annoyed with something at Uni, your love

life sucks, you want to tell the SJ team how much you admire them or maybe you just like to troll around and try to annoy us...Anyway, we’d like to hear from you. Pics are always welcome too (but keep them clean please!).Obviously we can’t feature all your letters but hopefully the best ones will make it into the magazine. Oh, and we may create something for this online pretty soon as well. Possibly, maybe.

Inspired yet? Send your letters to: [email protected]

Cross-Campus News

City South Campus Officer Resigns!Kirsty brook, has resigned from her post. we find out why...

One of the best things about being a student at BCU is that we’re such a diverse institution; with 24,000

students over eight campuses. From the hub at City North to the leafy campus at City South or the beautiful buildings at Margaret Street, we all study and socialise in very different surroundings. However, reaching out to all of those students across the city is a massive challenge for the Students’ Union. That’s why I decided to run for the position of City South Campus Officer in last year’s Exec Elections. I helped to plan Union involvement in the Freshers’ Fair intake for nursing students, and helped to recruit students for the NUS National Demo, amongst other things. And yet, things started to go wrong in my role. I felt that I was

Kirsty’s Letter to SJ and Student Councilremote from Full-Time Officers, who are all based at City North. During our training sessions in the summer, we were full of good ideas on how to work as one team, instead of concentrating on the divide between the full time and Part-Time Officers. Despite the good intentions, nothing like this ever happened. With this in mind, I decided to resign after I wasn’t invited to a meeting at City South Campus about the April Freshers’ Fair as I felt I couldn’t continue in my role without the support I needed. The Union is saying all the right things when it comes to involving campuses other than City North, but there’s so much more to be done. The Exec team, including the incoming team for 2011/12, need to take the opportunity to work at smaller campuses and use the skills and knowledge of the Part Time Officer team to make sure that the Students’ Union continues to work for all of our students.

Union President’s (TomTom) Response...

23

Hi Kirsty.Firstly, I would like to apologise for the lateness of this email, and understand that this is

part of the reasons that has led you to make you decision to resign. I understand and share your frustration, we started this year with plans to improve communication between the Students’ Union and each campus, and one some levels we have achieved that, however we have not improved our communications with Part-Time Officers. When we created the role of Campus Engagement Officer, we put in the job description that this would be the role which focused the Union, to incorporate Part-Time Officers more so that we created more of a team between all Exec Officers. It has been noted by us all when Part-Time Officers have not been present in a meeting, usually too late and usually due to the fact that they had not been invited and this is a cultural change that all the Union staff need to adopt going forward.

It is also difficult as Part-Time Officers have a lot of different commitments, as you know, and it is hard to get them all together and not all of them use or respond to their emails. However, you were one of the Officers that did this and who did turn up for meetings. In regards to your resignation, we will all be sad to see you step down, however as I have said I do understand your reasons. I do hope that I will see you at Student Council and on the Elections Committee. I would also ask if you can give me a couple of dates and times when you are free to meet up meeting up for a chat about how we can improve communications and involve Part-Time Officers more.

I hope to hear from you soon, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the work that you have put into the Union and to improving City South Campus.

Regards,Tom Thompson

It’s All Going Down SouthHealth students at City North react to the news of moving to City South Campus next year.

It’s recently been confirmed that several healthcare related courses are due to move from City North Campus to City South next year. Two of the courses heading southward are Radiography and Speech and Language Therapy, which together is a large number of people (as one year group of Radiography alone is about 120 people).

Collectively the opinion seems to be one of inconvenience and annoyance at the timing of the announcement. Individually, however, people have a wider range of views on the matter.Personally I’m a little confused about why we are moving such a large amount of people, equipment and library resources. There is a large X ray machine to be dismantled and taken over to City South, which is a fairly new

addition to the City North campus anyway. Maybe it’s so we have more room for our studies or maybe they want all of the healthcare courses together, but either way it’s not been properly explained to us.Despite this most are happy to go ahead and like the look of the new campus and its facilities.

However, its location is proving more of an issue and one student, Katie, said “I just don’t like change”, so that’s putting her off a bit.Unfortunately the declaration of the move came too late for those who were signing contracts for houses in Perry Barr before Christmas, they’ll now have to travel across Birmingham. A lucky few waited and have managed to get houses in Edgbaston and the surrounding area.

...inconvenience and annoyance at the timing of the announcement.

Most are happy and like the look of the new campus and its facilities.

People moving to that campus (myself included) have been told that the parking situation is so awful it’s best not to even try, so they are trying to find other ways to come in, even commuting from just outside Shrewsbury. One radiographer was told that a peak return ticket would be £43 a day which is ludicrous and she can’t be expected to pay that every day.

Heather, a radiography student said: “Because I won’t be able

to park there I will have to get the train which will be a lot more expensive for me” but another radiographer Janet said: “I understand it’ll affect people with kids but it won’t affect me too badly”.Whether we like it or not it’s happening and we have to deal with it, so let’s welcome the new and oddly shiny campus, even if with dubious arms.

Get to Know Your Faculty Reps

It’s time to get to get familiar with our Faculty Representatives. After all, they’re the link between the students, the Students’ Union and the University. These are the hard working people who fight to get the student voice heard!Firstly we caught up with BIAD Faculty Rep Jake Griffiths; “I wanted to be a Faculty Rep because I wanted to be the voice of the students within the faculty and begin making changes to the student experience” he said. The BIAD faculty have recently had meetings and planned a new canteen plan for the Gosta Green campus. There has been

maximum feedback from students and all of their suggestions have been passed on to the canteen manager. It just proves that student voices can be heard and can make a lot of difference!Jake can be contacted via email or through www.biadfacultyrep.moonfruit.com.After speaking with Business School Factulty Rep Lazaros Mafuko, we have learned that he is very passionate and proud to be a part of the BCU Faculty Rep team. “Students we have the opportunity of being partners in the development and shaping

of the future of our school” he said.We all have a role to play and if there is an issue bothering you regarding your educational facilities we all need to speak up about it! Faculty Reps enable our voices to be heard which is why they are such an important part of our University.

Do you know who yours are?

You can email Lazaros or feel free to approach him around campus. He’s based at the City North Campus and will be easily recognisable wearing a ‘Faculty Representative’ badge.TEE Faculty Rep Pathiban Parasuraman is constantly raising issues such as placements, internships, coursework results, Moodle and tuition fees at faculty meetings. He is definitely a person to go to if you want you’re issues aired.

Those of you living near City North Campus will be well aware that the speedway season is back! The roar of engines will be heard as the ‘Birmingham Brummies’ get their first season in the Elite League underway.

The team has a long history stretching back to 1926, but they disbanded in 1983. Graham Drury, Brummies’ team manager and promoter, is delighted at the progress the club has made since reforming five years

ago.“Birmingham has a vast history in the sport. It’s one of the top four names in world speedway!” he said.Pole Krzysztof Kasprzak has been signed as lead rider from last season’s champions, Coventry. Amazingly, he was happy to join the Brummies without even seeing the club’s facilities first. The club’s name and reputation in world speedway was incentive enough. Graham believes he is the right man to spearhead the team this season: “He’s a world class rider. He’s really looking forward to the challenge.” With a calculated match average of 8.55, he is

expected to score heavily.Kasprzak will be joined in the team by former Coventry team-mate Ben Barker, experienced Sweden international Daniel Nermark and young riders like Danny King and James

Wright, who Graham says “are definitely on the way up”.

But what about the noise? Graham is well aware of the social problems caused by noise pollution on race nights- and steps taken by both the Club and the League are reducing the problem for local residents. The Club has planted 100 conifer trees at the perimeter of the stadium to reduce noise escaping, and all bikes in the new season will be fitted with silencers to make them quieter.“It alters the performance of the bike, but that doesn’t matter because all the teams will be using them,” says Graham. “We’ll find ways of re-tuning the bikes to make them perform as fast as usual but with reduced noise.”

The action starts at Perry Barr Stadium on March 17th, when the Brummies take on local rivals Wolverhampton in the first meeting of a pre-season double header, the BBC WM Challenge. Following

another double-header against King’s Lynn in the Elite Elevation Challenge on March 24th, they will take their bow in the Elite League in front of the Sky Sports cameras on March 28th, with Poole visiting. With a top-quality, quieter speedway on your doorstep, there’s no reason not to get behind the team in 2011! Hello there readers, today I’ll be cooking a lovely Shepherd’s Pie! Ingredients;Mince (about 75-100g per person)1 whole onion OXO cube (or similar)Gravy granulesA splash of oil3 or 4 Potatoes (ideal for mashing)Vegetables (optional)And butter

First peel the potatoes and chop them so they’re all about the same size and leave them in a pan of water. Continue on to peel and chop the onion and whatever veg you might want, if any. Put a splash of oil in a pan start to brown the onions. While doing this put the pan on the hob and allow them to come to the boil. Once the onions are brown put in the mince and stir until it is also brown and you can see no

pink spots. Add your OXO cube, this will give it extra flavour. Once that’s stirred in add the gravy granules and a bit of water. When the potatoes seem soft enough take them off the heat, pour off the water and mash them with some butter. Then layer them up in a bowl and stick it in the oven for about 5 minutes or just blob it on a plate and you have yourself a lovely dinner!

Homemade ChipsSo here’s another great thing to do if you get a craving for

chips and all the shops are closed. It’s very simple to do and these chips taste great when they come out.Ingredients;Potatoes (however many you feel you need)Oil, it doesn’t matter what kind reallySalt and Pepper to taste

First get one of your potatoes and peel it (or don’t if you prefer them rustic) then chop it so that the chips end up about the same size as each other and repeat as needed with another spuds. Heat a little bit of oil on a baking tray in the oven and when it’s hot take it out and pop the chips into the oil, then put the tray back into the oven. I recommend about gas mark 6/7 or about 200°C which is a moderately high heat. Then go away for a bit and come back to it every 10 minutes or so to see if they’re cooked by prodding them with a fork, occasionally tossing them in the pan (and I like to put salt on while they cook). Once they’re cooked you’ve got a lovely plate of homemade chips and you can add salt and/or pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Every girl wants to be made to feel special. But being a student and affor-ding top class beauty treatments doesn‘t always go hand in hand. So it‘s a

blessing to find a place, on campus, that caters for a woman‘s needs.

‘Blinkin Gorgeous’ is based on City North Campus in the Student Union and performs a whole range of treatments from spray tans, massages, waxing,

threading and manicures.

The salon is currently undergoing renovation work, but despite its slightly mismatched interior it is a lovely environment to get pampered in. Upon entering through the glass doors into the salon reception you get welco-med with a friendly local smile and are instantly reassured that you are

going to be well looked after.

The prices are student friendly too, and with special offers updated month-ly there is no excuse to not treat yourself just before a lecture. A deal we particularly love is every Thursday ‘Blinkin Gorgeous’ has spray tan offers

ready for your weekend out clubbing on Broad Street!

C.R.A.Z.Y is a beautiful French-language portrait film that takes place throughout the 60-80’s following the life of Zac – a misunderstood and troubled boy- trying desperately hard to conform but his homosexual desires won’t let him. This film is about one teenager’s difficult journey towards self-acceptance. Zac grew up alongside four brothers and a strict Catholic father, so being gay wasn’t an option!

Through voiceovers we learn that Zac was born on Christmas day but ironically hates Christmas. He had to share the entire day with his brothers and never got what he wanted. We discover that at the age of 6 all Zac wants for his birthday is

a baby carriage, which his father immediately overturns, saying it will “turn him into a fairy” igniting the con-

flict between Zac and his family.

The Soundtrack is the best thing about the film: David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and The Cure grace this wonderful movie. 4/5!

This new movie by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost is a brilliantly written and com-

pelling story about an ‘alien’ called Paul. Al-though typically what we would call an Alien, he’s

been around on Earth for longer than most of us University-goers. Two best friends, Graeme and Clive,

on a nerdy convention and road trip around America stumble onto a new friend, and together with Ruth (Kristen

Wiig) they have to tackle obstacles and the man to try to set Paul free. It’s a barrel of laughs and is well worth

seeing while it’s still in the cinema, or fail-ing that on DVD.

Book Review: ‘Belonging’ by Sameem AliImagine being abandoned by your family, left in a children’s home, only for your family to bring you home, treat you like a slave and force you to marry a complete stranger. You may think could that happen? Well this book is based on a true story and it brought me to tears. The novel is a marvellous insight into a di erent culture and I promise that you won’t be able to put the book down. It is such a fascinating read. The writing is breathtaking and it felt like I was with Sameem witnessing her horri c story.

I asked my friend for some ideas about classic films and her response was Disney! Obviously, all the Disney films are pretty much ‘classics’ so I thought I’d review a Disney masterpiece: The Lion King (not the second and third ones). For its era the graphics were pretty amazing. Plus, how can we forget the amazing soundtrack. I’m sure we have all sang along to the Elton John classic, “Can you feel the love tonight” and many catchy songs from the film, “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” springs to mind...

This film has everything in just the right doses, from comedy to romance and evil all wrapped into one lovely Disney package. My favourite characters were Timon and Pumba; they added that light comic feel which fitted in so well with the story. This film spans across all generations, so whether you’re young, old or in between you will still LOVE it. Let’s face it we are all kids at heart. So, if you’re in the mood for some movie magic, I suggest the Lion King!

Guy Charlesworth 6th Nov 1986 - 19th Jan 2011

Guy was not a religious man but was very patriotic to his country, this hymn that was sung at guys funeral encompases everything that Guy believed and loved about England.

Here are some quotes from those that knew him and the man himself:

“I’ve got to duel him he tried to expelliarmus me!” - Guy Charlesworth whilst arguing with doormen

“Can i have seven boxes of nuggets and chips, hold the chips!” - Guy Charlesworth with a hankering for chicken

“He was so soft and gentle in bed, but thats another story” - Michael Gale

And did those feet in ancient timeWalk upon England's mountains greenAnd was the holy lamb of GodOn England's pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divineShine forth upon our clouded hillsAnd was Jerusalem builded hereAnd was Jerusalem builded hereAmong those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow of burning goldBring me my arrows of desireBring me my spears o'clouds unfoldBring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fightNor shall my sword sleep in my handNor shall my sword sleep in my hand'Til we have built JerusalemIn England's green and pleasant land

“Guy Charlesworth was a true mountain of a man”, never was a truer word said about Guy for as soon as you met him you could see why they said it. He was 6ft 4” and built like a wall, but it was not only his size that was massive, Guy also had a huge personality. He was tragically taken from us on 19th January 2011 from a rare heart condition which caused him to pass in his sleep.

Guy was an extremely active member of the university community and known by many. He was a key member of the men’s rugby team and helped them secure many a victory during his years at university. Guy was also a key member of the Students’ Union staff team. He worked as the Student Activities Receptionist for over a year, and after a member of staff left us Guy was promoted to acting Student Development Co-ordinator. A role into which he slotted quite comfortably. He was always a welcoming character and went out of his way to accommodate new students or lost students seeking a friendly face to guide them in the right direction. During his time at students seeking a friendly face to guide them in the right direction. During his time at the Union he made hundreds of friends and helped hundreds more seek the most from university.

Guy studied Architecture at Gosta Green for several years where he shared his passion for building and art with many students. Despite Guy’s appearance and love for sport, he was soft inside with a big heart and was often caught in the garden planting flowers or in the kitchen rustling up a gourmet meal. A testimony to how many people’s hearts Guy had touched at university was demonstrated at his funeral. A bus of over 70 students attended the ceremony and many more met us there. However this volume of students barely touched the amount of friends and relatives that attended. When we arrived, the church was packed and the queue extended as far as the eye When we arrived, the church was packed and the queue extended as far as the eye could see. The ceremony was held at Guys hometown of Chipping Campden near Bath.

Guy may be lost but he will never be forgotten, he has touched so many lives in such a short time and his memories will last forever. There will be a memorial plaque in his honour at the Students’ Union and we will also dedicate an award in his name at the annual Student Activities Ball so that students for years to come will learn of the man that was Guy Charlesworth and have the opportunity and honour to receive his award.

For those that knew Guy you will all hold different memories, as everyone who met Guy instantly learnt and loved something different. Whether a team mate, a housemate, a colleague or a friend; he will always be held in our hearts and minds. So if you see something that reminds you of him, or hear a song that brings back a memory, do not shed a tear or let out a cry, just smile and remember he is always here.Written by James Goulding SJPage 41
