Space 1939

The setting of Space: 1939 is an alternate Earth which diverges from our own from the late 19 th Century onwards. In 1890 Dr. Jose Rizal makes contact with Nikola Tesla and other avant garde figures and begin a successful program of political, economic and scientific innovations, leading to a golden age of global peace and prosperity through the beginning of the 20 th Century. Manila, Buenos Aires and Zagreb become triple centers of a cross-continental Rennaisance, with world peace and development led by the United League of Nations (ULN). By the early 1920s space exploration begins in earnest propelled by fusion technology, leading to the establishment of a permanent Moonbase and orbital spaceports by 1930. However, lingering imperial ambitions clash with the desire for self-determination result in conflicts throught Europe, Asia and Africa, prompting an arms race and colonial repression among the Powers. The Empires of Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, and America and China despite their common membership in the peace-advocating ULN, are locked into a Cold War. The Philippines and Argentina valiantly ead international efforts at moderating the simmering conflict. Lungsod Buan, the ULN’s moonbase located atop the crater Tycho oversees experiments on anti-gravity, anti-matter, time travel and other esoteric technologies. Nearby, two curious artifacts are discovered buried in other lunar craters: a monolith and a ring of apparently extraterrestrial construction. The monolith emits a strange, piercing radio signal directed towards Saturn, while the ring apprently is a portal to other dimensions. A UFN expeditionary spacecraft is quickly assembled and deployed to investigate the signal’s destination. On the other hand the Earth’s imperial powers all send troops to guard the ring, refusing to allow further research lest one of them manage to usurp its mysterious powers for itself.

The setting of Space: 1939 is an alternate Earth which diverges from our own from the late 19th Century onwards. In 1890 Dr. Jose Rizal makes contact with Nikola Tesla and other avant garde figures and begin a successful program of political, economic and scientific innovations, leading to a golden age of global peace and prosperity through the beginning of the 20th Century.

While war among the major powers has been effectively prevented on Earth by the ULN Covenant, it is silent on armed conflict in space and on the Moon. Skirmishes eventually break out among the national forces in orbital space, on the Moon and Mars, leading to the “Worlds’ War” of 1939.
