ByThomRandall•[email protected] WARRENSBURG - It was a quirky incident that drew national attention due to a woman’s remarkable honesty - which prompted a Warrensburg enterprise to reward her actions. Patty Wesner of Cossayuna was driving on her way to work Feb. 26 down a desolate, rural roadway when a bag of $11,000 in $1 bills flew out from the back of an armored truck and into the roadway in front of her vehicle. She stopped, collected the bills, and called 911. The troopers responding to the scene called it an “unbelievable” act of honesty. Frank Toti, General Manager at Krystal Chrysler, saw the news report on televi-sion and was impressed. That newscast described Wesner as less than wealthy - and she could have easily used the cash - as she used a bungee cord to keep the hatch-back door on her 2002 Toyota Sequoia to keep it from flying open unexpectedly. This situation impressed Toti, he said this week, recalling how he sought to help her out. “When I first heard the story I thought how she is quite a role model,” he said March 14. “Then I heard she had an older high-mileage vehicle and a bungee cord holding her car door closed, and I thought, we’d like to do something about it.” After work that day, Krystal Parts Manager Bob Olden and Service Manager Andy Studler drove to her house in Cossayuna - not a short trip - to determine what was needed to fix the door latch.

March 11, Wesner brought the car in for repair, and the Krystal employees includ-ing Mike Poutre not only fixed up her car, but Toti bought her lunch and filled up her tank with gasoline. Krystal staffers even washed the vehicle. “I thought it was appropriate to do something for her,” Toti said. “Her actions made us all proud to be Americans.” Also, Toti heard that Wesner was going to receive a reward from Brink’s Inc. for her honesty, and she had plans of donating it to the Pember Library & Museum in Granville. “Her donation of the reward was even more amazing, so I made a contribution of $100 to the library,” he said. Apparently others nationally share Toti’s feelings about Wesner and her honesty. Pember Library & Museum, where Wesner is Executive Director, has received

more than $800 in donations from people all over the U.S., Wesner said this week. She’s been interviewed by leading U.S. newspapers and one in England, and was named “Person of the Day” by the Huffington Post. Regardless of all the publicity - which included network television coverage, Wesner is thoughtful, humble and is a true Good Samaritan, Toti said.

“She sent us a beautiful thank you card,” Toti said. “She’s one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met.” Thursday, Wesner returned the compliment. “Krystal and their employees - they are the best!” she said. “They were so sweet.”

Hopefully by the time you’re reading this we’ll have gotten a break for the lin-gering cold and wind. At least most of the snow has melted except for the more tenacious parking lot “bergs”. Hopefully April’s showers can melt them and May’s flowers after all. In spite of the lingering cold it is nice to have put winter behind us even though we could see another flake or two. Spring will not be denied much longer.!

During last decade perennials have become very popular. I suppose that this is due to the theory that, since perennials come up every year, folks can avoid “all that work” involved with planting annuals that need to be planted every year. I would prefer to think that our gardening tastes have become more sophisticated as the years go by. Perhaps we’ve learned to appreciate perennials during all stages of their development rather than demanding the “instant gratification” that annuals provide. I myself would never exclude either from my garden. “Variety is the spice of life” as they say. While it’s true that peren-nials are a more permanent addition to the flowerbed, annuals, with their unending show of flowers will always have a place in my flowerbeds. How could I resist the feathery foliage and cheerful flowers of cosmos or the durable height of cleome? How can you top the color impatiens or coleus bring to the shady corners of your yard? The little effort involved in planting annuals is amply rewarded by the show annuls provide.

Anyway…with the planting season starting up, I am compelled to mention a product that I won’t plant a perennial, shrub, tree, or hardy flowerbulb without.

What if you could buy a product that was high in phosphorus, lasted in the soil long enough to feed your plants for 4 or 5 years and was 100% organic? Sounds great doesn’t it? What is this amazing new product? Just something that you great-grandmoth-er or great grandfather probably used…BONE MEAL!

To appreciate bone meal, you have to understand the importance of phosphorus to your plants. Phosphorus is the middle of the three numbers on any fertilizer product (remember?). It stimulates root growth and flower and fruit production. There are many sources of phosphorus. Some are rapidly available as in soluble plant foods like Miracle-Gro. Others are slower as in 5-10-5, a popular vegetable food.

The steamed, sterilized phosphorus in bone meal is not a chemical fertilizer and is not soluble at all. Bone meal MUST be mixed into the soil at planting time so the roots of the plant will grow into and through the bone meal. This provides the plant with a source of phosphorus that the plant can use as it needs. New gardeners become aware of the importance of bone meal when they plant their first fall bulbs like daffodils and tulips. More experienced gardeners realize the value of adding bone meal to the soil whenever they are planting ANYTHING that they expect to return every year. I always add bone meal when I’m planting trees, rose bushes, evergreens, flowering shrubs, evergreens, fruit trees, and, especially, perennial plants. The only time I DON’T add bone meal is when I’m planting annuals or vegetables that will only grow for one season.

Adding bone meal to you peat moss/soil blend in the bottom of your planting hole below shrubs trees, bulbs and perennials insures that the root system will establish itself in the shortest possible time. If the root system is strong and vigorous, the rest of the plant will follow suit. During the active part of the season I still use my other plant foods to provide nitrogen and potassium but, early and late in the season when substantial root growth is occurring, I know my bone meal is down there helping the plant take advantage of the cool weather.

Remember that bone meal can’t burn like a chemical fertilizer, so it’s very safe when placed near the roots. Anyone who’s had the experience of planting fall bulbs with-out bone meal only to watch them get smaller and smaller each year can appreciate the value of adding bone meal. As I’ve been known to say, “You’d be crazy to overlook the benefit of adding bone meal in all permanent planting situations.” Once again, thanks for the read.

From Skidmore Chefs to Young Scouts to Corporate Sponsors, Event is Built on “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”

(Wilton, NY) -- The Wilton Food Pantry invites the public to its second annual “Empty Bowls” fundraising event to help the hungry, taking place at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 on Route 9 in Wilton, on Sunday, April 14th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The premise of Empty Bowls is simple: each attendee is able to choose a unique handcrafted bowl; fill it with a simple meal of soup, chili and bread; and then take the bowl home after the event, as a reminder of neighbors faced with empty bowls every week. Advance tickets are $15 at wiltonfoodpantry.org or at the three Wilton branches of Saratoga National Bank. Admission at the door (if available) will be $20. “Each bowl at this event is a true vessel of hope, the proceeds from which allow the Pantry to purchase 93 pounds of food from the Regional Food Bank,” notes WFP Board President Deb Zel-lan. In addition to the handmade ceramic bowls and food, the afternoon will feature live music by John & Orion Kribs, with special guest, fiddler Doug Moody. A silent auction will be held from 1:00 to 3:30 with items including a gas grill, his and hers vintage Schwinn bikes, jewelry, shop-ping, dining, golf, art and more.Community Pitching In to HelpThe varied contributors to the event include students and ceramicists crafting bowls, Skidmore chefs cooking the food, individuals and businesses providing silent auction items, local musicians providing music, the media offering promotion, and the Elks donating the space. “This event amplifies the spirit of the food pantry, which is Neighbor helping Neighbor. Folks are doing what they can to be part of this home-grown solution—strengthening community, vol-unteerism, generational ties—and working together to resolve food insecurity and provide good nutrition, which makes for a healthier Wilton,” said event organizer and Board member Dennis Towers, whose company, McKinley Griffen Design & Advertising, is providing its services free of charge to the Pantry.Other event sponsors include:- "Souper Hero" Sponsors (top level): Hannaford Supermarkets; D.A. Collins & Saratoga Veterinary Hospital.- "Bountiful Bowl" Sponsor: Saratoga National Bank- "Hunger Helper" sponsor: Lant's Auto "The Pantry and this event are a step toward restoring the strong sense of generational commu-nity that once thrived here. We have Girl Scout Troop #3555 helping senior volunteers pre-wash bowls to set out; Boy Scout Troop #24 helping with set up, kitchen and general assistance through-out the event; and volunteers of all ages lending a hand during the event,” notes Towers. “This event is the single largest source of funds to operate this all-volunteer food pantry, and it is a rare opportunity to build community within the Town of 16,000 residents,” Towers continued. About Wilton Food PantryResidents of Wilton can visit the Pantry 12 times in a year for a three-day emergency supply of food for their family. The Wilton Food Pantry distributed groceries equal to over 24,000 meals in 2012. "The neighbors we serve range from seniors to infants. They include people facing job loss to people with health issues and families whose income has not kept pace with rising costs. These are real issues. We have a responsibility to keep our community strong and to help each other,” comments Deb Zellan, WFP Board President. The families that utilize Wilton Food Pantry services are also educated about nutrition, food origins, and meal preparation. “Chef Ben Niese of Skidmore, who was involved at our first Empty Bowls last year, is now a regu-lar volunteer. Ben will look at the inventory that day, with a focus on perishables. He will write up easy to prepare recipes on the spot, which we share with the families. This helps them get back to "slow food" principles and perhaps prepare foods they have not had in the past,” explains Zellan.More InformationFurther information about the Pantry, as well as sponsor information and tickets for the event, are available at WiltonFoodPantry.org. As preparations continue, there are sponsorship spots left to fill and additional auction items will be welcomed.

Did You Know? The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Rich-ard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simu-late the drive-in movie expe-rience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In the-ater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person in-side. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to Drive-Ins.com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remain-ing in the United States and 55 in Canada.

Cloudy Headlamps A

Significant Safety Concern

(MS) -- Many drivers feel less comfortable behind the wheel at night than they do during the day, when daylight makes it easier to see fellow motor-ists as well as pedestrians.

Nighttime can compromise a driver’s vision, and that reduced vision is a key factor in traffic fatalities, nearly half of which occur at night.Though traffic accidents are a byproduct of a host of factors, headlamp clouding is one of them and a growing problem for many motorists. Vehicles equipped with plastic headlamp lens-es can become hazed and yellowed from the effects of sunlight, ozone, road pollution and the chemicals used in car washes. When driving at night, cloudy headlamps combine with little or no natural light to decrease visibility and pose a significant safety threat to drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists. Drivers cannot increase the amount of natural light at night, but there are steps they can take to improve their nighttime visibility.* Address cloudy headlamps. Plastic headlamp lenses, espe-cially as they age, reduce headlight output considerably, com-promising nighttime vision and the safety of drivers and their passengers. But as potentially dangerous as cloudy headlamps can be, it’s just as easy for drivers to address the issue before it becomes a problem. Employing an advanced technology that works with minimal effort, the Philips Headlight Restoration Kit is designed for do-it-yourselfers and can help restore head-light lenses to like-new condition in less than 30 minutes. In lieu of a costly headlamp replacement, the Philips Headlight Restoration Kit allows motorists to quickly and significantly improve the light output of their headlamps, taillights, turn sig-nals and reflective lens covers.* Keep wiper blades fresh. Vision is already compromised at night, when the lack of natural light can make it difficult to see pedestrians or animals on the road. That visibility is only fur-ther compromised by brittle or ineffective wiper blades, which should be changed every 90-120 days to ensure optimal perfor-mance. Drivers who live in areas with heavy rain or snowfall should inspect their wiper blades more frequently, especially if there is pitting on the windshield.* Check the windshield washer periodically. The windshield washer is an often overlooked aspect of vehicle maintenance. Unfortunately, it’s typically too late by the time many motor-ists notice an issue with their windshield washer. Don’t fall victim to a faulty windshield washer in the middle of a rain-storm or a blizzard. Inspect the windshield washer periodically to ensure it’s working properly and keep the fluid level topped off so it’s there when you need it.* Think ahead. In addition to addressing existing issues, driv-ers can take steps to ensure their nighttime visibility is protect-ed over the long haul. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit, for example, employs a protective UV coating that can prevent future clouding for up to two years. In addition to addressing the headlamps, consider how your visibility is likely to be af-fected during the worst possible snowstorm or on a night with torrential rains. Keep those conditions in mind when deciding whether or not to hang any fuzzy dice or other trinkets from your rearview mirror. While such items can add a touch of per-sonality to your vehicle, the decreased visibility such items can cause is not worth the cost over the long haul.
