Early civilization discovered the advantages of spit

roasting. If you lived a couple of hundred years ago, you would have had to cook over an open fire. Your dinner spun on a long stick that was cut from a surrounding tree and your feast was trussed on the branch.

It must have tasted pretty good, as still to this day it is the most popular method of cooking, offering a taste which is truly hard to beat.

Why Choose

HognSpit??

HognSpit bring this timeless cooking method into the 21st Century with startling results. Eating should be ‘fun’ and a hog or chickens roasting on spit is without doubt, ‘theatrical eating...

Established as a family business, HognSpit is managed by Cammy Scott, an ex Warrant

Officer in the British Army, who launched the business with a commitment to quality, service

& produce that underpin the company’s business philosophy to this day.

Juicy mouth-watering pork, fresh bread, ‘hot’ flavoured sauces & gorgeous crispy crackling. Fresh, never frozen, slow-roasted chicken, one (or both) cooked and served at the same time guarantee a memorable culinary experience…Pleasant to the eye as much as the tongue…

Whether your preference is for the subtle or sublime, HognSpit can cater for you with a personal service, impeccable quality and delectable food which guarantees you will enjoy your event as much as your guests do. Staff are well presented and trained to uphold HognSpit’s high standards.

“We are, and proudly continue to be, the choice supplier of Hog Roasts, Spit Roasted Chicken and an ever expanding variety of tastes in the South West. We continually thank our staff for their unyielding hard work & pursuit of excellence. Praise must also go to our supply chain & UK farming industry for producing the best meat in the world.

Most importantly we would like to thank our clients. We believe that providing our customers with what they want, when and how they want it, is the key to customer satisfaction.”

Service level quality is retained by continual development, and through customer feedback and analysis. To book your HognSpit event, call 07544 551212 or email [email protected].

Arboriculture requires a high degree of technical competence supported by training and experience and for these reasons, arboriculture should only be undertaken by well trained and competent arborists who are a member of a professional organisation. Active Tree Care are a member of the Arboricultural Association and pride themselves on delivering a reliable, professional and environmentally friendly service.

In contrast to many other trades, Active Tree Care refuses to let the current economic climate affect it’s continued growth. Owner Tim Goldfinch explains “our service together with our customer care is what stands us apart and makes us so popular with our customers. Our testimonials on Check-a-Trade are proof of that and whatever area of arboriculture our customers need help with, we will always strive to deliver a quality of service we can be proud of” .

Sat 29th Sep to Sun 4th NovPillars Of Faith At Salisbury Cathedral

The artist Greg Tricker brings his exhibition Pillars of Faith to the Cathedral from Saturday 29 September until Sunday 4 November. Based on the theme of Saints, who are the ‘pillars of faith’, the exhibition of over twenty pieces of contemporary religious is a mix of 2D and 3D artworks with stained glass, wood and stone sculptures, wood carvings and paintings.

The Saints represented are St Joan, Mary the mother of Christ, Mary Magdalene, Christ himself, St Francis, St Joseph, St Bernadette, St Clare and St John. This exhibition includes a collection of significant and large new pieces on the theme of St Joan d’Arc created specifically for this Cathedral setting.

Greg Tricker’s profound and simple

style of painting is deeply rooted in a mystical tradition of art. Qualities of myth, an innocence of spirit akin to the folk art tradition and a powerful theatrical element are the key features and influences in his work.

Exhibition Curator Jacquiline Creswell says “Greg Tricker’s work is very effective in a sacred space and the juxtaposition of his passionate religious art in this beautiful medieval cathedral setting will be extraordinarily powerful.”

The Cathedral welcomes visitors every day from 9am to 5pm. If you are visiting on a Sunday, recommended viewing times are 12.00noon –4.00pm (services are held at 8.00am, 9.15am, 10.30am and 4.30pm). For further details visit www.salisburycathedral.org.uk or telephone 01722 555120.

15th Sept 10am - 2pmMichaelmas Goose Fair St. Laurence’s Church, Downton

What is a Goose Fair and why do we celebrate it at Michaelmas? We have to go back a few hundred years when the Goose Fair was a regular event. Farmers would drive their geese in from the fields to fatten them up for Christmas (turkeys from America were still an unknown!). The long walk along the drove roads from outlying small holdings took several days, sometimes weeks and the geese (feet tarred to protect them!) and their handlers walked all the way.

Arrival at their destination was a time for celebration and an excuse for a Fair! The focal point of the village was of course, the Church and this was where villages would gather to sell their wares such as lace, produce, meat, ales and of course, the geese!

Last year, we here in Downton decided to hold our own Michaelmas Goose Fair and it was such a success that we are going to repeat this exciting event! Inside the church there will be lots of stalls with crafts and goods for sale, and plenty of activities for the children.

‘The Golden Egg Cafe’ will be open for business providing a tasty lunch with delicious puds! The Michaelmas Market will have cakes, pies and scrumptious home baked bread and tea and coffee on tap!

Make a note in your diary and come and join the fun at The Downton Michaelmas Goose Fair.... an event not to be missed!

It’s the stuff of Daily Mail competitions. It’s the fantasy that drives the holiday

cottage industry: when once a year we satisfy our desire for rural living by renting our own dream cottage. But what happens when – like newly retired couple Gary and Linda Speed from Basingstoke - you decide to live the dream?

Gary and Linda wanted to buy a spacious, detached cottage in the West Country with off-street parking, original features and countryside views. Having around £300,000 in the bank, they were confident that they would find their perfect home.

However, they were initially dismayed to find that while house prices may have slumped in recent years, the market for period properties in popular areas remains surprisingly buoyant.

The couple eventually found a reasonably-priced cottage that ticked all the right boxes. Located

in a quiet village outside a popular Dorset tourist town, the attractive stone-built, thatched property had no central heating and lacked a modern kitchen and bathroom, but it did have a large garden and all the period features they wanted.

“We knew that it needed updating,” says Linda. “But it was absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t understand why someone else hadn’t already snapped it up.”

However, as the various surveys and building reports they had commissioned began to pile up, the true cost of the renovation was revealed.

The stonework needed re-pointing, the electrical wiring had decayed and the damaged thatch would cost

thousands to replace, so Gary and Linda reluctantly pulled out. They had incurred costs along the way – solicitors’ fees plus the cost of the surveys and reports – but they had avoided the nightmare of a ‘money pit’ purchase by taking professional advice early on.

If Gary and Linda’s dreams didn’t match up to reality, they were not alone. In a recent survey by AA Home Emergency Response, 2,005 people were questioned about their ideal home. 28% of respondents fantasised about a owning a property in a rural location, with a

large, open-plan kitchen/diner and living area featuring

high on their ‘must-have’ list. 48% of the sample wanted sea views while slightly more than half prioritised views of

mountains or open fields.

As anyone familiar with

Life Begins...

Don’t let your dream cottage turn into a nightmare

10 | The SP5 Magazine

Page 11: SP5 Sep/Oct 12

by Claudia Leaf

the British countryside will know, rather than enjoying expansive views, many village dwellings face directly onto a busy road. A large kitchen/diner is also a rare find – particularly if the cottage is Grade II listed and the local authority does not permit structural alterations.

In fact the competition for properties that ‘have it all’ is so intense that in sought-after areas you will need to spend £500,000 plus if you want a property with good internal space that enjoys excellent countryside or seaside views. Buyers on a more modest budget will inevitably have to compromise.

After their experience in Dorset, Gary and Linda seriously considered giving up their dream of a West Country home, but during a weekend trip to Somerset a ‘For Sale’ sign caught their eye.

Their final purchase was a small, terraced town house that faced directly onto the street - a far cry from the ‘roses round the door’ cottage with a large garden they had originally envisaged. As Linda explains: “We knew we had to compromise on our dream, but in the end it didn’t really feel like a compromise. It was different, but we loved the village and somehow the chemistry was right.”

Sir Richard Branson is back with another peek into the world of the UK’s most celebrated business brain.

For one of the richest men in the country, Richard Branson is about as normal a bloke as you

could ever wish to meet.

The chairman of the Virgin Group may have built up a personal fortune of $1.4billion over four decades - in doing so making him one of the most recognisable figures in the UK. But speaking to the 61-year-old is not how you would imagine conversing with one of the world’s most famous businessmen.

“I believe in living life to the full, making the most of every single day,” Branson says in his unfailingly positive tone. “I just live for the moment, which is a cliché but it is true. I have a great life. I would be a bit sad if I didn’t make the most of it, wouldn’t I?”

Branson is not wrong when he says he has a great life - you just have to look at his 74-acre Necker Island home that he shares with wife Joan to recognise that this is a man who goes by the maxim ‘work hard/play hard’.

“It is my favourite place in the entire world. It was love at first sight as soon as I saw it all those years ago. It’s like being on holiday when I’m there because it is such a wonderful setting and there are always parties going on. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

Of course, the luxury has been hard-earned – the rewards of positive thinking and decisive decision-making; both outstanding trademarks of Branson’s extraordinary

career. From humble beginnings – Branson left school at 15 with no qualifications – he has built up a worldwide conglomerate that now has over 400 companies.

Having enjoyed huge successes with products ranging from airlines to trainlines, mobile phones to the internet, Branson is considered the oracle on all things business. And happily for budding entrepreneurs, he has revealed his secrets in a new book Like a Virgin: Secrets They Won’t Teach you at Business School.

“I get sent so many questions from people – via text, via email, via tweet – that it is impossible for me to get back to everyone, so I thought I would answer everybody’s questions in one go by writing the book. And I’ve enjoyed it.”

So what are Branson’s key pieces of advice?

“I always think that for something to be successful, it has to be an obvious labour of love for those involved. I am passionate about all my projects because if I’m not passionate about something, why should anyone else be?

“But the idea must be a great one. If you have a great idea that will improve people’s lives, then you can’t go wrong. You have to have

products that people can see will make their lives better.”

But it isn’t just his inspirational ideas that have marked Branson out as a visionary, it is the quality of service too, and his message is simple – go the extra mile.

“You will only be a success if you are offering your customer the best they can find,” he says with certainty. “It is absolutely vital. If it’s an airline, it has to be the best. If it’s a trainline, it has

to be the best. If it’s the internet, it

has to be the best.

And if you’re

If I were a rich man...Interview

14 | The SP5 Magazine

Page 15: SP5 Sep/Oct 12

offering the best, you will earn people’s trust.”

Such an incredibly diverse business roadmap may seem unlikely nowadays for the next generation of entrepreneur to follow, but Branson says that business school and qualifications are not the be all and end all for aspiring businessmen.

“I learned to survive by doing it, making mistakes as I went along, and that can happen today. Anybody can make themselves a success – you just need the idea. And perseverance. I have had my share of failures but I’ve never let any of them put me off trying something else. You can succeed even if you’ve failed.”

So what of the future? As you might expect, Branson isn’t ready for the pipe and slippers just yet.

“I want to carry on, definitely,” he says merrily. “I feel fit and healthy and there is no reason for me to stop. There is still so much to achieve. Who knows what tomorrow might bring?”

Sir Richard Branson’s new book, ‘Like A Virgin: Secrets They Won’t Tell you at Business School’, published by Virgin Books, is out now.

Continental Themed Evenings

Café Continental at The Stag are introducing themed evenings from September kicking off with ‘Italian Nights’ every Friday

throughout the month. Customers can expect to be teased with new and exciting Italian recipes using only the freshest ingredients and sourced locally wherever possible. We’re not sure how many olive trees are growing in Wiltshire though!

Also coming soon on Saturday evenings will be ‘Continental Specials’ which will be themed around all the old favourites with some new dishes based on seasonal ingredients to celebrate the harvest delights available at this time of year.

As always, a range of dietry requirements are catered for, including the use of healthy ingredients and the option of low fat mayo, dishes which are gluten free as well as gluten free cakes. Don’t be afraid to ask the staff what’s available when you book as they really do aim to cater for everyone including a great

vegetarian selection.

We heard on the grapevine that male diners have been requesting a bitter for some time so if you are a bitter drinker you will be delighted to hear that Old Speckled Hen is now available on draft.

Whatever the time of day, every appetite is catered for. Fresh coffee and pastries (baked on the premises) are available in the morning with tea and cake served in the afternoon - a really lovely way to relax and spend time with friends or family. Smaller plates for the popular dishes are also now offered for those amongst us with a smaller appetite – perfect if you’ve had a bit too much cake earlier.

Buon Appetito!

STARS APPEAL TIDWORTH 10k & 3k FUN RUNnow open for registration

Registration is now open for the eighth annual Tidworth 10k & 3k Fun Run. The popular event, in aid of the Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal and organised with the assistance of 1st Mechanised Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadron (215), takes place at Tedworth House on Sunday 4th November. Over 1,000 people took part last year. Once again, insurance company Aviva are sponsoring the event.

The event attracts runners of all ages and abilities, and although there are always some fast times, the focus is on fun and fundraising. Runners can choose between a 3k and 10k route, which both start and finish

at Tedworth House. The 10k goes through the army camp before heading off on to Salisbury Plain. The 3k follows a much less challenging, fun route around the Tidworth polo grounds and is suitable for all to run, walk or toddle including pushchairs.

The runs have become a key part of the Stars Appeal’s annual fundraising. All runners are asked to raise sponsorship money towards an area of the Hospital close to their heart, such as Cardiac care, the Pembroke Unit for people with cancer and blood disorders, Caring 4 Kids or the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and attached Parents Accommodation Unit.

Gemma Heath, Fundraising Co-ordinator for the Stars Appeal said, “We are enormously grateful to the Army for their continued support which ensures that this popular event can go ahead. Monies raised will help us to continue making a difference for local people in hospital.”

The event often sells out, so organisers advise people to register early to ensure their place. Runners can register online via the Stars Appeal website.

At its weekly meeting on July 9th at Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club, Netherhampton, Wilton Rotary Club’s 33rd Presidential Handover was completed when outgoing President Jeff Gyles (above right) formally handed over the president’s chain of office to incoming President Andy Rhind-Tutt. Like Jeff, Andy will be serving his second term as president having previously held office during

Rotary’s centenary year in 2005-6. In line with

Rotary protocol Andy welcomed Jeff to the Club’s governing Council

as Immediate Past President.

Under Jeff’s leadership the Club has enjoyed one of its most successful years: record funds raised by its Mammoth Car Boot Sale and Rotary Spireworks enabled the Club to donate more than £20,000 to

over 40 local, national and overseas charities. And in helping to marshall the Supercars at Wilton House event and the recent Walk For Wards the Club played a major role in raising significant funds for Salisbury District Hospital’s Stars Appeal.

Following the handover ceremony the Club’s Founder President, Arthur Bowden, presented Jeff with a Paul Harris Fellowship, the traditional Rotary award for distinguished service.

The Forum Stroke Club hold aMINI OLYMPICSOn 24th July 2012 The Forum Stroke Club based in Wilton held their very own mini Olympics. Although many of the survivors are either wheelchair bound or have a disability with arms and walking due to their stroke, it didn’t stop them having a go, in fact some of them had three or four goes at the club’s challenging archery for the disabled. Organised and run by Steve Olding who designed and adapted the bows to suit disabled folk, the volunteers and carers were also catered for with unadapted bows. This was to be an outdoor event but due to the wet summer the playing field originally booked became unsuitable and had to be

cancelled. However all was not lost as Robin Hood came to the rescue

and set the games up in the Wilton Community Centre.

Curling, skittles, a grocery shi (bottles, cans and cartons to be knocked down) were also part of the games. Staff included

a continental touch with Boules refereed by volunteer

John. This was played outside

in the sunshine in the little back garden at the back of the Community Centre looked

after by caretakers June and Dave. The afternoon culminated with a medal ceremony and lunch prepared by Theo Ross and served by the volunteers. A lovely day was had by all. The next meeting is on 4th September, the Club

meet every Tuesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Wilton Community Centre, West

Street, Wilton. Please phone Dee Mansfield on 01722 710508 for more information. You are also

invited to attend a Stroke Awareness Morning on 11th September to find out more about the support offered for stroke victims and their families.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2012

New car launches take place pretty frequently. Audi, for example, has delivered

no less than 21 new models into showrooms since 2010. In those same two years, niche Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi has launched absolutely nothing. That’s why, as car launches go, this new Outlander is a pretty big deal.

So has the wait been worth it? Well, in short, yes. No longer a partnership with Peugeot Citroen (who sold versions of the predecessor), the new Outlander is described by Mitsubishi as an ‘engineer’s car’. What it means is efficiency, space and refinement were all high on the agenda – looks, however, appear to have slipped off it.

In fact, it’s worth dealing with our main complaint now. If there’s one thing that lets the new Outlander down, it’s the conservative styling. At a time when design is at the forefront

of our lives, the Mitsubishi will be hard pressed to stand out in a class bristling with good-looking alternatives.

However, the new model does make a strong case for itself. Let’s start under the bonnet. In the UK, we’ll only get a 2.2-litre diesel engine and a four-wheel drive powertrain. Mitsubishi has worked hard on the unit’s green credentials. We drove a pre-production model, but by the time the car is launched in November, the maker hopes it will produce under 145g/km (down from 165g/km) and return more than 50mpg.

The 148bhp engine doesn’t lack grunt either. With 380Nm of torque it pulled

strongly on the German Autobahns and twisty mountain roads that

made up our test route.

The 2.2-litre is likely to be good

for 125mph and will crack the benchmark

60mph sprint in under 10 seconds. What’s really impressive though is the refinement. Inside, the engine is barely audible, while wind and tyre noise are kept to a minimum too.

If we were to be picky, we did find the steering a little numb at the dead ahead, but the manual six speed gearbox was direct and pleasant to use. There was also a noticeable lack of body roll for a 4x4 in corners.

New technology, for Mitsubishi

at least, will also make a debut on the Outlander. There’s a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control and a low-speed anti-collision system which will apply the brakes for drivers if it thinks you’re about to hit the car in front – at a roundabout, for example.

What will come as standard is yet to be finalised, but expect the lot on the top-of-the-range model.

There’s also a new multimedia system with sat nav, which is far easier to use than before and an electronic tailgate.

But by far the biggest selling point for the Outlander is the two very-usable extra seats in the boot floor. They can be extended in seconds and fold away completely flat. They’re perfect for parents who sometimes need an extra set of chairs for the school run.

Mitsubishi aims to sell 4,000 Outlanders a year in the UK at slightly more than the current model (around £25,000). We think that could be a tough ask with this sole offering. However, when the plug-in hybrid version arrives next year offering real world economy of 140mpg, it could be a very different story indeed.

Autumn Pudding

1 Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.

2 Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut

the remaining slices of bread in half.

3 Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.

4 Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.

5 Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

Serves 6Ready in 1 hour(plus overnight chilling)

Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert.

Rehoming Appeal

HAPPY HOUND ELLA LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO CALL HOMEDogs Trust Salisbury Rehoming Appeal

Jo Blake, Supporter Relations Officer at Dogs Trust Salisbury, tells us “Ella is a four-year old

border collie who was abandoned at our centre, tied to the gates, in February. She is a very clever girl and since she has been with us she has learned ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘paw’ and ‘roll over’ and is really eager to learn more. She is ball-mad and really outdoorsy so loves to play, go for walks and explore.

When she was abandoned at our centre, she was left with a muzzle on and it took us a while to get if off of her as she was just terrified. As a result, she was very shy and extremely nervous of new people, but is now coming out of her shell. She is growing in confidence every day and is starting to become very affectionate towards the staff but is

still a bit wary of new people.

She is looking for a stable adult home with owners who have had previous experience of owning a collie; she could live with another dog that is ideally as energetic and fun-loving as she is. Ella’s new owners would need to be willing to help her continue her training and settle her in and give her some of the TLC she has missed out on in life. They would also need to travel to the centre several times to meet her before taking her home.

She is a lovely dog who would make a great addition to any lucky home.” If you think you can offer Ellla a new place to rest her paws, then please visit Dogs Trust Salisbury at 45 Amesbury Road, Newton Tony,

Wiltshire, SP4 0HW or call them on 01980 629634 to arrange to meet this bubbly lass.

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 18 Rehoming Centres nationwide and one in Dublin.

Hampshire Collegiate School extends a warm welcome to their new

Head of Prep.

As parents everywhere return to a potentially quieter routine after the school holidays, the start of the new academic year brings an especially busy focus for Helen Donnelly.

Taking up her new role as head teacher of Hampshire Collegiate Prep School, Helen also has the task of introducing her two children to a new school following their recent relocation from Berkshire.

Helen joins the Romsey-based school with more than 20 years’ teaching experience, leaving the post of Head of Junior School at LVS Ascot in Berkshire where she taught for 10 years. Prior to her years at LVS Ascot, Helen was a science coordinator and Head of Year at two independent schools, has worked in three inner city schools and has also been a senior university lecturer in Teacher Education.

Helen will undoubtedly be looking forward to the school’s Open Event on Thursday September 20th when HCS will be opening its doors to the public from 10.00am – 3.00pm. There will be a series of hands-on events and demonstrations showcasing the school’s academic success recently endorsed by an independent inspection report.

Of her new role, Helen said: “I am genuinely excited; I can see how good the school is already while believing it also has so much potential. There is just ‘a something’ about Hampshire Collegiate. Despite the enormity of the family’s relocation it was a position I just had to accept. The atmosphere and buzz, the friendly and committed nature of the teaching staff and the unique characteristics of the children are infectious and I am thrilled to now be a part of it. I also believe my own children will benefit from this beautiful school”

Visitors to the open event will learn more about the school’s dynamic

extra-curricular activities which include extended learning in areas such as management, art, orchestra, choir, foreign languages, creative writing and various sports – all activities aimed to help develop a child for modern society. In addition, visitors will be able to speak with the school’s specialist, dedicated teaching staff, plus meet with Helen.

Principal at the school, Hector MacDonald, said: “In the past few years the school has made some significant advances to enhance the focus on each individual child and I would urge anyone looking for an exciting school to come along on the day to meet the staff and talk to the children.”

Hampshire Collegiate School is passionate about ensuring every individual child feels welcomed and comfortable in their new surroundings. To find out more call 01794 512206 or visit their website.

Bean SceneCoffee purists scoff at instant, saying there’s no substitute for ground coffee. The cheapest and easiest way to experiment with ground coffee is to buy it in a tin and stick it in a cafetière; expect to pay around £10 for a simple one or as much as £60 for Bodum’s Columbia double-walled cafetière, heat insulated to keep your coffee fresh. If you’d like to turn your coffee into a latte, £7 to £15 pays for a battery-powered milk frother.

Cafetières aren’t the only cheap choice: the Aeropress (around

£20 online) comes with rave reviews. It looks like a cross between a cafetière and a pump, and that’s essentially what it is: it uses gentle air pressure to extract more flavour from your coffee. Using it’s just a matter of putting in a few scoops of coffee, pouring in hot water and pressing the plunger. The whole process takes less than 30 seconds.

For years most coffee machines

in the high street were filter ones, usually consisting of a reasonably sized jug, a hot plate and a funnel. They’re still around, but in recent years

the focus has shifted to machines that make small espressos rather than huge jugs. Espresso machines come in two forms: ones that use loose ground coffee, and ones

that use pods.

DeLonghi’s EC330S Espresso Coffee Machine (around £85) is a good example of the former, with a removable stainless steel filter and an integrated frother that uses steam to create perfect cappuccinos and lattes. They’re not the quietest or the most convenient - the filter only takes enough coffee for a single cup at a time - but there’s

no arguing with the superbly tasty results.

If you’d rather use pre-packed coffee pods than loose

grounds, DeLonghi’s Espresso Icona range (from around £99) offers the best of both worlds: it works with Easy Serve Espresso (ESE) pods, or with loose coffee. As with the EC330S, it’s only designed to make one or two drinks at a time.

ESE is the world’s favourite kind of coffee pod, with versions from big names including Illy, Lavazza and Segafredo, but it isn’t the only one: Nestle has its Nespresso system, while Douwe Egberts has its Senseo. All three systems offer pros and cons: they’re more convenient than loose coffee and less messy, but the coffee isn’t as fresh and in the case of Nespresso and Senseo, you’re locked into one firm’s coffee system. Senseo pods don’t work in Nespresso machines and vice-versa.

Coffee snobs wouldn’t go near either: for them, the only way to make coffee is to grind the

beans yourself. Grinders aren’t as expensive as you might think. Bodum’s Bistro range of electric grinders starts at £79, while Krups’ GVX2 is just £36. It is one more machine to clean however and one more step between waking up and tasting the first coffee of the day. If you’re really serious about your coffee, a coffee machine with its own integrated grinder is a much better idea - but don’t expect to find one going cheap: a good quality bean-to-cup machine such as Gaggia’s R18171 will set you back £699.
