    ART 240 - SPRING 2012

    Course Description:

    This class...Is a studio experience in intermediate to advanced digital photography.

    Develops computer proficiencies and aesthetic awareness in preparing and outputting images throughdigital capture, manipulation, editing, and presentation; explores visual culture and criticism past andpresent.

    May be taken 3 times for credit. Prerequisites: ART 140 or instructor permission.

    The course will provide a hands-on experience that approaches digital photography from an artistic,historic, and craft-oriented perspective. All aspects of digital photography will be considered, from exposureof images in the camera to the presentation of the finished image. Special attention will be paid to self-expression, based on an understanding of aesthetic principles and graphic design. Historical approachesand contemporary issues concerning the art of photography will be discussed. Students abilities will bedeveloped through regular photographic assignments and critical evaluations.

    The Mission: Elevate the Art and Appreciation of Photography through exploration, risk-taking,experimentation, critical inquiry, honesty and self-reflection.

    Visual slides will be posted whenever possible, however, you will be required to take notes in class.Demonstrations and Lectures will not be repeated if you miss class or fail to take adequate notes.You will be responsible for keeping up with the class regardless of absences, sickness, or other specialsituations please use the online resources if you wish to have hard copies of handouts, lectures orarticles.

    YOU MUST TAKE NOTES IN THIS CLASSMost lectures will be posted online by the end of each week. This is NOT a substitute for taking notes.

    Readings are to be completed BY the date that you see them noted on the syllabus in almost allcases, they are assigned in order to give you a firm base of understanding before lecture and demos takeplace. Please come to class prepared to discuss/question/engage during lecture.

    Quizzes, planned or pop will be employed if it becomes apparent that students are not reading thechapters or completing the assigned notes or home work.

    Attendance & ParticipationAttendance and participation are very important in this class as we build skills each week and consideringlecture and discussion are a large part of each session.You will be expected to attend each class and notify me if they can not attend for any reason.You are encouraged to stay home if they are ill, however, they should communicate with me soon andshould have another student who is attending class keep them up with notes. It is the studentsresponsibility to get on line to see what the latest assignments and other class related happenings are.

    Students will receive an attendance grade for each day class is held. Grades are assigned based onattendance, participation, interaction, readiness to work and other relevant criteria.

    You will be marked absent:if you arrive later than 10 minutes after class is scheduled to begin (unless there is a delay overall)if you leave early without checking in with meif you show up for class but are not ready to work during work sessions on a regular basis (2+ times)if you miss class and do not notify me ahead of time

    Excused absences: You will notify the professor if you stay home sick and will be responsible for keepingengaged and current with the class using listed resources and other students - the onus is on the you, thestudent, not the instructor. It is the students responsibility to keep the professor informed and up to dateabout any prolonged absence, sickness, or other health or life issue that may arise. Failure to do so willresult in assignments subject to class deadlines, no make-ups and unexcused absences.

    Critiques: Please note on the schedule when you will be expected to turn in your work for critique.You must be present on critique days, failure to show up will result in an unexcused absence & your workwill not be accepted.

    Can I bring in my friend, kid, dog, roommate, significant other with me to class or lab?: Students may attendthis course only if registered; no friends may accompany any student during class, lab or at any other timein any part of the facility. There are no exceptions. Students who are unable to attend must drop thecourse online or through the Registration Office.

    Student participation in the community lab:Students will be evaluated on their participation of maintaining the cleanliness of the lab. Each student isexpected to clean up their own areas and to contribute to the functionality, cleanliness and wellbeing of thelab throughout the term. Guidelines will be posted and discussed in class. Students are responsible forfollowing them. Students will be responsible for following posted & stated facility guidelines at all times.

    Flexibility Statement regarding Inclement weather and/or delayed opening of the campus:Assignment/exam calendars may be changed in response to institutional, weather, & class problems.In the case of a delayed opening, we will meet provided 2 1/2 or more hours remain for the daysclass. Should classes continue to be cancelled, please use My PCC, the PCC photo class blog and otherresources that your professor directs you towards to keep updated and check for any assignments duringthe break. Assignments and such will be posted as announcements on My PCC and it will be the

    students responsibility to sign up for flash alerts, check their email and MyPcc accounts to keep up to date.

    Communication with Instructor & Office Hours:

    Communication:For security and privacy reasons, all correspondence between instructors and students will need to takeplace via our PCC email accounts. Please know that any correspondence from me will be sent to theofficial email that PCC has for you. It is your responsibility to check that email. If you need help routingyour PCC email to other email accounts (such as yahoo or gmail) please contact the Computer ResourceCenter for assistance.

    How to contact me: If you need to contact me directly, email is the best way to quickly get a response. I amoften away from my desk & voice mail, however, I check my email often. Do not hesitate to contact me withyour questions, problems, etc. and please do use email to let me know if you are out sick or are havingproblems getting to class.

    If I need to get a hold of you, I will email your PCC email. This includes if I have to cancel class, changeplans or otherwise reach any or all of you in short notice. So check your email often especially on dayswhen we have field trips or bad weather. I suggest that if you commute or take the bus to check your emailin the morning before class. I will make every attempt cancel class or send notifications by 6am if not thenight before.

    Office hours:Tues / Thurs 9-11am & Fridays 9-10 AMPlease respect the times that I have set up to be available for you.Contact me if you need to make an appointment outside of these hours as I am happy to accommodate.

    Disruptive, disrespectful, harassing or otherwise inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. Every studenthas a right to learn in a supportive, respectful, honest and productive environment. Please report behaviorof concern to the instructor or lab technician on duty.Cell phones: For emergency use only put it on vibrate and take the call outside.

    Texting, talking on phone, etc. is not allowed during class - again, take it outside.

    Headphones/Earbuds: Earbuds/phones are allowed only during free/open lab time. They must be out ofyour ears anytime during lecture, demo or instruction of any kind.

    *Instructor reserves the right to ask any student to turn off and remove any device at any time.*

    Grading:(This breakdown is subject to change)

    Final Portfolio: 40% 400ptsPhoto Assignments: 30% 300 pts totalMidterm/extra project(s): 10% 100pts

    Attendance/Participation: 20% 200pts

    Total: 1000 pts possible

    * All assignments, tests and final/portfolio are required; you MUST participate in the final, if you fail toparticipate in the final you will fail the class. This means if you do not show up during your scheduled timefor the final - you will FAIL the class.

    * Late work will NOT be accepted

    * Extra credit and all other work must be received by 9th week or it will not be accepted.

    Grade Definitions for assignments & course:A Superior.

    Honor grade indicating excellence above and beyond. Superior performance and progressshown in mastering skills taught in course. Excellent attendance and active involvement andcontribution to class discussion and critiques. Prompt and consistent completion of everyassignment.

    B Above average.Honor grade indicating competence. Accurate and prompt completion of assignments, ability todeal well with abstract ideas, commendable mastery of pertinent skills, and excellent attendance.

    C AverageFair accurate and prompt completion of assignments, regular attendance and participation in classdiscussion and critiques, fair mastery of skills / shows average progress

    D Substandard but receiving credit. Generally inaccurate, incomplete or late assignments, inadequategrasp of abstract ideas, barely acceptable mastery of pertinent skills, irregular attendance,insufficient evidence of ability to progress in sequential courses.

    F Fail Incomplete or late assignments, sporadic or little attendance and participation, failure to show a fairamount of progression in skills. Fail to participate in final critique.

    Grading Options: - you must choose your grading options at the start of the term

    Pass/No Pass: A cumulative grade of C or better is a Passing grade.Audit: Students must obtain instructor permission for an Audit and complete all assignments,

    attend all critiques. Student will be given an Audit only if they are a full participant in the

    class.No college credit is earned.

    Incomplete: only if an emergency prevents you from completing the final assignment/critique; fill out theofficial form with me detailing a make-up plan. I will only allow incompletes if all work withexception of the final project has been completed and graded by 9 th week.

    Graded: a letter grade will be assigned unless you choose one of these options officially throughMyPCC

    Dropping and Withdrawl from the class:The W grade will be assigned when the student withdraws from a class through studentrecords by the end of the eighth week. Instructors are restricted from assigning a W to astudent who has attended after the 8th week and must assign a grade.

    Digital Photography CT 112in-class protocol

    No Food or Drink in work area all food/beverage items MUST be at the back table and remainthere. You may get up during lecture to drink/eat while you take notes as long as its not disruptiveto the class.

    Computers MUST be logged into (digital photo) and logged out before you leave please do this10 min before class ends out of consideration for others.

    Leave all settings, preferences, etc. the SAME DO NOT CHANGE anything

    Internet browsing/access is restricted to class-related activity at all times NO EXCEPTIONS

    Social Media Policy & Email You may use flickr, facebook, for class related purposes only. Anyviolation of this policy and we will block internet access for the entire class.

    Computers: NOTHING is to be downloaded, saved to the desktop, or otherwise taken from anothersource and put onto our computers an instructor can help you with anything you need.

    You are NOT to plug in your own laptop this is not a public lab.

    If you want to listen to music you must listen to your own music with headphones. No exceptions.If you want to share your music with everyone, we welcome mix CDs for the whole lab. If we get acomplaint about the music we switch it up. You may also bring your own music and earphones, butremember that you will need to keep the volume down low enough to hear instructions from the labtech or instructor and these are not for use during lecture or instructional periods of class.

    Headphones are allowed only during open lab or free work time

    Use MyPCC Course Homepage or other resources that your instructor has set up for you to accessclass resources, lectures, files, assignments, slide shows, etcIt is up to you to catch up if youmiss class handouts are posted on line for you to print, no extra prints will be made and nodemonstrations or lectures will not be repeated for your individual benefit.

    Sign in for open lab and please be aware that you must follow all lab tech instructions. Failure to do

    so will result in loss of Open Lab privileges.
