his chapter provides instructions for configuring the SS7 protocols (ANSI SS7 and ITU C7) in the SP201. Use the sections that apply to your SP201’s setup. Before configuring the protocols for your SP201,

4.1 Signaling System 7 in the SP201

Signaling System 7 (SS7), an out-of-band signaling protocol, includes ANSI SS7 (used in North America), and ITU C7 and its variants (used in most of the rest of the world).1 (The SP201 software sometimes uses the term “ANSI” to refer to ANSI SS7 and sometimes uses the term “ITU” to refer to ITU C7 and its variants.)

The SS7 protocols implemented in the SP201 conform to the following standards:

• ANSI SS7 conforms to Bellcore TR-NWT-00246 and to ANSI T1.111a, T1.112, T1.113a, T1.114, T1.116, and T1.234–T1.236.

• ITU C7 conforms to ITU-T Recommendations Q.763, Q.767, Q.701–Q.704, Q.705, Q.708, Q.709, Q.780–Q.782, Q.784, and Q.788. (Variants of ITU C7 also conform to applicable national and local recommendations.)

The SP201 supports ANSI SS7, ITU C7, ETSI ISUP, Spanish ISUP, and Brazilian ISUP.

Note: The ports for ANSI SS7 or ITU C7 trunks depend on the software in the SP201:

• In CAS to SS7 protocol-conversion software, the SS7 protocol is on trunks 5–8.

• In ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 protocol-conversion software, the ANSI SS7 protocol is on trunks 1–4, and the ITU C7 protocol (or an ISUP variant) is on trunks 5–8.

• In SS7 to ISDN protocol-conversion software, the SS7 protocol is on trunks 1–4.

To verify the ports for SS7 trunks, use the show trunks command, described in Section 9.2.11.23, The show trunks Command.

Configures parameters that apply to all DS0s on the SP201. On systems using CAS protocols, sets the conditions for sending circuit reset (RESCIR) messages. For ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 conversion, sets use of ANI. See Section 6.2.1.4, The config sp200 Command for ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 Signaling.

Note: On systems performing ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 conversion, this command is available only if the optional ANI feature has been installed.

linkdown ANSI SS7, ITU C7

Disables an SS7 signaling link (ANSI or ITU). See Section 4.3.3, The linkdown Command.

4.3 Configuring Signaling System 7 Protocols

You can configure the SS7 protocols as indicated in the following sections. These sections include commands that are used in each SS7 protocol that the SP201 supports: ANSI SS7 and ITU C7 (including variants).

• You can use the config link command to designate the originating and destination point codes for SS7 protocols. See Section 4.3.1, The config link Command.

• You use the config network command to configure adjacent and non-adjacent links. See Section 4.3.2, The SP201’s config network Command.

• You can use the linkdown command to disable a link. See Section 4.3.3, The linkdown Command.

• You can use the linkup command to enable a link. See Section 4.3.4, The linkup Command.

• In ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 signaling (including variants), you can use the config sp200 command to indicate use of alternate number insertion (ANI). See Section 6.2.1.4, The config sp200 Command for ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 Signaling.

Note: The commands are the same for configuring ANSI SS7 and ITU C7, including ISUP variants. The parameters will show values for the type of SS7 protocol you are configuring. Some parameters in some commands may not appear for certain types of SS7 protocols.

4.3.1 The config link Command

You use the config link command on software that converts between a System Signaling 7 protocol (ANSI SS7 or ITU C7) and another protocol. The

config link command lets you designate which SS7 trunk will carry point code information.

Figure 4-1 illustrates the task flow for the config link command. The procedure below explains the details.

1 At the user> prompt, type config link x and press Enter, where x is the trunk that supports the SS7 link.

Note: In CAS to SS7 standalone software, the default link SS7 link is on trunk 5. The value for x is 5.

Note: If you type just config link and press Enter, the system asks for the number of the trunk that will carry the point code. Type 5 and press Enter.

If the SS7 link has already been assigned to this trunk, the following prompt appears. Go to Step 3.

If the SS7 link has not been assigned to this trunk, the following prompt appears.

2 Type y and press Enter.

The SS7 link is removed from any previously assigned trunk, and is assigned to this trunk. The following prompt appears.

The SP201 does a warmstart. It now uses the new configuration. The user> prompt is displayed.

4.3.2 The SP201’s config network Command

You use the config network command to configure network parameters. This command allows you to set up address point codes for the SP201 and the adjacent and non-adjacent nodes on both sides of the network.

An adjacent node is a device that has a direct ANSI SS7 or ITU C7 link to the SP201. A non-adjacent node is a device with an indirect ANSI SS7 or ITU C7 link to the SP201—that is, there is at least one device between the non-adjacent device and the SP201.

The config network command is used in software for ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 or for any SS7 to ISDN conversion. It is not used in CAS to SS7 conversion.

The procedure below explains how to use the command. You need to have the Network Provisioning Plan worksheet (Appendix A, Site Planning Worksheet) completed and handy before using the config network command.

How to Use the SP201’s config network Command

Note: If the card set performs ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 protocol conversion, both sides of the network will be active. When you use the config network command in ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 protocol-conversion software, you must configure both sides of the network.

However, in software that converts between SS7 and ISDN, there is only one active network side to configure. In the procedure, we have configured ITU C7 as the active side of the network. If the cardset in your SP201 uses the ANSI SS7 protocol instead of ITU C7, be sure to configure the ANSI SS7 side as active.

Note: If you enter an invalid value while using the config network command, the system displays an error message and prompts you for a valid entry. The system continues to prompt for a valid entry until you enter the correct data or type exit or quit.

Note: In the steps of this procedure, ns represents the side of the network you are configuring (ANSI or ITU), and os represents the other side of the network. (You configure os parameters only for ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 protocol conversion.)

1 At the user> prompt, type config network and press Enter.

If you are configuring SS7 to ISDN software, a prompt similar to the following is displayed. Go to Step 5.

Note: In standalone ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 software, you configure both sides of the network (ANSI and ITU). You configure only one side at a time.

In standalone SS7 to ISDN software, the system automatically indicates the side of the network that you configure.

If you are configuring ANSI SS7 to ITU C7, a prompt similar to the following is displayed:

2 Do one of the following:

a Type n if you want to leave the links up on one side of the network (Side B in this scenario) even if all the links on the other side (Side A) of the network fail.

The following prompt is displayed. Go to Step 4.

Note: Standalone software has the following number of signaling links:

• There are up to four signaling links on a standalone card that performs ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 protocol conversion.

• There are up to four signaling links on a standalone card that performs SS7 to ISDN protocol conversion.

9 You need to configure the adjacent nodes for this side of the network. In the subsequent steps, p indicates the adjacent node you are configuring. (The value for p ranges from 0 to one less than the number of adjacent nodes you specified in Step 5.) Perform all of the following substeps.

a Enter the point code of the current adjacent node p, in the format n-n-n, and press Enter.

Note: Get all point codes from your network administrator.

One of the following occurs:

• In SS7 to ISDN software, a prompt similar to the following is displayed. Go to Step 9c.

• Type y for load sharing.

• Type n for no load sharing.

In either case, the following prompt is displayed.

f Enter the appropriate CIC number for unmapped CICs, and press Enter.

Note: The SP201 treats unmapped CICs as if they are not assigned to a physical T1 or E1 channel in one of the networks, nor assigned to a peer CIC. These unmapped CICs are referred to as “unequipped.” The SP201 does not autonomously send unequipped messages. For example, in R2–ITU C7 signaling, when the SP201 receives a message from the R2 network using an unequipped CIC, it requires an unequipped C7 CIC for the translated C7 message. The SP201 always uses the same C7 CIC in this translation.

Your signaling provider should provide you with an unequipped CIC that is safe to use for this purpose. Refer to the network provisioning plan.

To map CICs of one protocol to CICs of the peer protocol, follow the procedure in Chapter 7, Timeslot and CIC Configuration.

A prompt similar to the following is displayed:

h Enter the correct trunk number, and press Enter.

A prompt similar to the following is displayed:

i Enter the correct timeslot number for signaling, and press Enter.

Note: Indicate signaling timeslot 16 for E1 lines, which ITU C7 uses. Indicate signaling timeslot 24 for T1 lines, which ANSI SS7 uses.

m Enter the appropriate priority (0–3, where 3 indicates the highest priority) for this link, and press Enter.

Then, if this is the last link in the linkset, the following prompt is displayed. Continue to Step 9n.

• If you are configuring ITU C7, enter the appropriate priority number (0–3, where 3 indicates the highest priority), and press Enter.

• If you are configuring ANSI SS7, select priority 4. (The priorities will be assigned according to the BellCore ANSI specifications.)

If you said yes to loadsharing of links in Step 9e, one of the following responses occurs:

• If there are more links to configure, the following prompt is shown, where q has incremented by 1. Go to Step 9g. (You must perform Step 9g through Step 9l until all links in the link set have been configured.)

• If you have finished configuring links, and you are not configuring ANSI SS7–ITU C7 software, go to Step 9p.

• If you have finished configuring all links, and you are configuring ANSI SS7–ITU C7 software, the following prompt is displayed. Continue to Step 9o.

o Do one of the following:

• If you wish to change ISUP parameters, type y and press Enter. Go to Section 4.3.2.1, Changing ISUP Parameters in the config network Command. (After you have finished configuring ISUP parameters, that procedure will return to the appropriate point in this procedure.)

Note: Changes in the ISUP parameters affect only ANSI SS7 to ITU C7 signaling.

You can change ISUP parameters for one side of the network, for both sides, or for neither side.

• If you do not need to change ISUP parameters, type n and press Enter.

p Consider the following results:

If there are additional adjacent nodes to configure, a prompt similar to the following is displayed (where p has incremented by 1, to advance to the next node). Go to Step 9a and proceed through Step 9l to configure the next adjacent node.

When you have finished configuring all adjacent nodes, a prompt similar to the following is displayed. Continue to Step 10.

10 Enter the number of non-adjacent nodes, and press Enter.

Caution: The SP201 can support a maximum of four adjacent nodes. The SP201 can support a total of 30 adjacent and non-adjacent nodes.

Note: The SP201 treats unmapped CICs as if they are not assigned to a physical T1 or E1 channel in one of the networks, nor assigned to a peer CIC. These unmapped CICs are referred to as “unequipped.” The SP201 does not autonomously send unequipped messages. For example, in R2–ITU C7 signaling, when the SP201 receives a message from the R2 network using an unequipped CIC, it requires an unequipped C7 CIC to use in the translated C7 message. The SP201 always uses the same C7 CIC in this translation.

Since the ANSI SS7 switch does not process subsequent address messages, the SP201 must accumulate all digits in the original IAM plus all digits in subsequent address messages, then forward a single IAM to the ANSI SS7 side.

The IAM forwarding timer sets the length of time the SP201 will accumulate the ITU C7 digits before sending the IAM to the ANSI SS7 side.

32 Do one of the following:

a To disable the timer, type 0 and press Enter.

Caution: Setting the IAM forwarding timer to 0 will disable the feature. Do this only if the ITU C7 equipment connected to your system will never send subsequent address messages.

b Type the value for the timer (in tenths of a second), and press Enter. (Or just press Enter to accept the default.)
