1 SPRING CONVOCATION 2019

Dear Graduand,

Your graduation began long before this day.

It began when you made the choice to study that extra hour, dedicate yourself more deeply, and strive to reach for the degree you had chosen to fully commit your life to pursuing.

Many of the people that helped you arrive here today are seated beside you—friends, family, classmates—while others are thinking of you from afar.

We are honoured to have given you a place to discover, inspire others and be challenged beyond what you thought was possible.

We hope you know, we will always be that place for you.

Yours,

UBC

The UBC graduation journey has been forged by the spirit of the university’s motto, Tuum Est, (meaning ‘it is yours’) since 1915. Today, you, the graduating class of 2019, now shape UBC’s history by making it your own.

THE GRADUATION JOURNEY

3 SPRING CONVOCATION 20192 SPRING CONVOCATION 2019

1916One of the first graduating classes was the Arts Class of 1916 pictured here at a party at the home of Mary Wilons. In UBC’s first year, there were only three faculties: Arts, Applied Science and Agriculture with 379 registered students and 34 faculty members.

1920sThe student-led Great Trek to UBC’s Point Grey established the university’s first campus. The Alma Mater Society (AMS) incorporated as a non-profit society and the university began awarding its first graduate degrees to students. In the Ubyssey, published in September 23, 1925, students described the new campus with a sense of wonder: “We are dazed with the appearance of architectural cleanliness and bewildered by our lineal freedom.”

1940sThe forties were an era of tremendous change at the university as both students and faculty embraced the war effort. In 1943, new President Norman MacKenzie began in earnest to expand the university and new departments were formed along with new buildings to house them including Brock Hall and the first student union building. By the 1950s, UBC had established itself as a comprehensive university and top choice for students in BC and beyond.

1960sStudent numbers continued to escalate alongside the scholarly activities that began to define UBC as a leader in research. The campus was alive with sixties counterculture and a sixth president of UBC was elected by the name of Dr. Walter Gage. New student residences were created to respond to the expanding student body as well as a new student union building. Students gained influence at the university and were elected to the University Board of Governors for the first time.

1980sWith over 34,000 students registered at the beginning of the eighties, UBC began attracting scholars from all over the world. Engineering students were in the news frequently for their pranks, which included the famous Ladner Clock Tower stunt in which students pulled off hoisting a white Volkswagen Bug onto the top of the tower. Dr. Martha Piper was elected President in 1997 and ushered in an era of international engagement that saw UBC step onto the world stage as an educator and global centre for research excellence.

2000sThe demand for increased access to post-secondary education led to the official opening of UBC’s Okanagan campus in 2005. Student learning opportunities multiplied as UBC expanded to include two major campuses—the Vancouver Campus and the Okanagan Campus.

2019More than 13,500 students will become the Class of 2019. They will go on to join over 350,000 alumni who have successfully graduated from UBC and continue their journey as treasured members of the UBC community.

THE UNIVERSITY MACE

The Mace is carried by the ‘Macebearer’ who leads the Platform Party, which includes the Chancellor, the President and other dignitaries, onto the stage for the Convocation ceremonies.

Created by First Nations artist Sheldon Louis of the Okanagan Indian Band, the University Mace is carved from a single piece of alder wood, and combines Okanagan Nation traditions with university customs. The main artwork on the Mace features three symbolic spirit icons—a mother bear with her two cubs, the image of the mountains, and water— given to UBC Okanagan in 2005 by the Okanagan Nation elders. The spirit icon gifts were selected by a group of First Nation elders, led by Andrew McGinnis, an Okanagan Traditional Medicine Keeper from the Penticton Indian Band, and Victor Antoine, an elder of the Okanagan Indian Band. Each spirit icon was chosen carefully for its special significance to the region, reflecting local Okanagan Nation tradition, culture and knowledge.

The Mace also features a number of university symbols, including the UBC Okanagan logo, the University coat of arms and the UBC motto Tuum Est – It’s Yours. In addition, the back of the Mace displays the word Suknaqinx, which is of the Nsyilxcen language, spoken by the Okanagan’s original people. Roughly translated, it means “the ones who stand on the hill and are seen and heard from far away.”The University Mace, which was carved in the shape of a paddle, representing the importance of Okanagan Lake to the region’s people, is also inlaid with silver, applied by First Nations silversmith artist Justin Terbasket of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band. The Mace was used for the first time at the 2009 Convocation ceremonies.

THE PROCESSION

President Santa Ono shakes the hand of every student that crosses the stage—that’s over 10,000 students each year. This handshake signifies the transition from student to graduate.

REGALIA COLOURS

The hoods, gowns and hats worn by graduates are lined with colours to indicate the degree to be conferred, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages when the first universities were founded.

THE CHANCELLOR’S OKANAGAN CHAIR

In 2007, UBC’s Okanagan campus commissioned the creation of a new Chancellor’s chair for use in Okanagan Convocation ceremonies. Handcrafted by master furniture maker Dennis Weidman of Lake Country, BC, the chair was fashioned from cherry wood, a species selected for its significance in the Okanagan’s long history as a fruit–growing region.

The chair’s front panel features UBC’s motto, Tuum Est, the UBC logo laser engraved in the headrest panel, and UBC’s coat of arms on each side panel.

The University Mace is a symbol of the authority of the Chancellor. It is displayed on ceremonial occasions, most notably during the Convocation ceremonies but also during the installation of a President or Chancellor.

6 SPRING CONVOCATION 2019 7 SPRING CONVOCATION 2019

No doubt you have been asked: “What will you do after university?” Some of you have made clear choices about what comes next. Others may be less certain, but as graduates of UBC, you are justifiably optimistic that compelling opportunities are just around the corner.

There appears to be consensus among writers and philosophers—and parents—that it is choice rather than fate which determines where the human journey leads. Perhaps Ralph Waldo Emerson said it most succinctly: “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”

But as you embark on the next leg of your journey, I encourage you to be aware that the learning process is still young. Throughout our lives we make discoveries that stimulate new interests and new ambitions. Such is the wonderment of fate—it is often a welcome stimulus that opens our eyes to previously unforeseen opportunities for success and fulfillment, even on the part of those who are confident in the choices they have already made about the future.

But some choices should never be altered, irrespective of what fate has in store for us. Chief among these are the principles by which we choose to live. Indeed, ours is a world rich in information and opportunity, but it is also a world that has grown increasingly complex, and one whose destiny will be shaped by important choices on the part of all of us.

As alumni of UBC, I hope we are all uniformly proud of our university’s reputation for adhering to principles of mutual respect, equity and sustainability, and that these remain our own chosen principles at every juncture on the road ahead. Let us never lose sight of how our actions affect the natural world, nor of the necessity of respectful and mutually beneficial engagement with people of all cultures, including the Indigenous peoples of Canada.

As graduates of one of the world’s finest universities, it is incumbent upon all of us to be unwavering in our choices to be contributors to a just, compassionate and sustainable world. As for fate, have no fear. The journey has only just begun, and there is every chance that the unforeseen will be extraordinary!

Warmest congratulations to all.

— l i n dsay g o r d o n , ba’73, mba’76

On behalf of all UBC alumni, it is my pleasure to welcome graduates and your families and friends on what we hope is a joyful occasion.

Page 6: Sp r i n g C 2019 - University of British Columbia · Okanagan logo, the University coat of arms and the UBC motto Tuum Est – It’s Yours. In addition, the back of the Mace displays

I hope that when you do look back on your time at UBC, you will do so with fondness, and that when you look ahead, you will see UBC as a part of your future. You will always be welcome here, and we look forward to hearing about your personal and professional achievements as you build on the foundation provided by your UBC degree.

As new graduates, you are joining a large group of remarkable people who have preceded you through this ceremony. Today, the graduates of UBC excel in practically every field of human endeavor. Three graduates have served as Prime Minister of Canada—including the incumbent Justin Trudeau. Seventy graduates have been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship and 65 graduates have won an Olympic medal. Our alumni include scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs, educators, activists, artists, writers and humanitarians. Wherever they may be, our talented graduates are contributing to the wellbeing of their fellow citizens and solving some of the grand challenges that face humanity.

As you begin a new stage in your life and experience, you can be confident that you can and will make a difference, because like the UBC graduates who have gone before you, you possess the knowledge and skills that are conferred by an excellent education.

At every level and in every course you’ve taken here, you have been exposed to the rigours of critical thinking, to the complexities of problem-solving, and to the need for risk-taking and imagination in the creation of new ideas. You have developed strong communication skills in a variety of media, and learned the value of teamwork and collaboration. You have encountered people and ideas from a wide variety of backgrounds, in the process acquiring a new understanding of cultures and traditions that differ from your own.

As you embark on the next stage of your life’s journey, do not be afraid to take up the challenges that await you; you will have many opportunities to turn your hard-earned expertise and knowledge to good use, to become involved in your society, and to offer your ideas and solutions with the confidence that they will be heard and respected.

In his address to UBC’s initial graduating class in 1916, UBC’s first President Frank Wesbrook encouraged students to make our world a better place in which to live. Today, over a century later, I echo his remarks. I believe each of you has the capacity and skill to succeed and make our world a better place.

As you celebrate this transformational day with your family and friends, take a minute to reflect and think forward to the many ways you might help shape the world in the years ahead.

And one more thing. Graduation should never mean goodbye. As Professor Wesbrook also said at that time, Tuum Est —it’s your university—today and always.

Best wishes,

— p ro f e sso r sa n ta j. o n o

Congratulations! Graduation is a momentous day in your life. It is a time to look back at all you’ve accomplished and a time to look ahead to what’s next.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

WILLIAM CARPENTIERDoctor of Science, honoris causa

UBC alumnus Dr. William Carpentier is a distinguished medical researcher who is best known for his extraordinary contributions to the field of space life science.

Born in Edmonton and raised on Vancouver Island, he graduated from the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine in 1961. With a keen interest in aviation he moved to Ohio to pursue additional studies in aviation medicine at Ohio State University.

He was selected as a flight surgeon trainee by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1965 and was made a staff flight surgeon later that year, responsible for the health and welfare of astronauts.

At the time, operational space medicine was a new field and research about the effects of microgravity on humans was

limited. Dr. Carpentier thought the clinical tests and evaluations being advocated for NASA’s Apollo space program were incomplete. He therefore requested that comprehensive quantitative biomedical measurements be taken to ensure the welfare of the astronauts and to gain a better understanding of human health in weightlessness.

His expertise and commitment were put to good use as flight surgeon for several history-making NASA missions, including Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing.

When the Apollo program ended, he completed a fellowship program in nuclear medicine and then joined the Nuclear Medicine Division at Scott and White Healthcare in Texas, where he contributed to important advancements in radiology, diagnostics and cancer treatment.

He returned to NASA in 2003, where he is again working with research colleagues to study changes in the cardiovascular system in microgravity.

LEWIS KAY, O.C.Doctor of Science, honoris causa

Lewis Kay is widely known for his pioneering research in biochemistry and for his role in developing modern nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

After completing his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Alberta, he went on to obtain his Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics from Yale University in 1988, followed by post-doctoral studies at the National Institutes of Health.

He returned to Canada in 1990 to accept a faculty position at the University of Toronto, where today he is a professor of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Chemistry and a senior scientist in the Molecular Medicine research program at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

His methods allow researchers to see how the shapes of molecules change over time, which has provided new insight into protein structure and functions that are closely tied to human health and disease.

It is essential to note that his open source approach to research has allowed hundreds of scientists in academia and industry to use the methods developed by his team. Not surprisingly, his scientific papers are amongst the most highly cited in chemistry.

His numerous awards include the Steacie Prize from the National Research Council of Canada and the Favelle Medal from the Royal Society of Canada.

A member of both the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Canada, he was recently named a Canada Gairdner International Award laureate, and is a Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal recipient in Science and Engineering, as well as an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Honorary degrees are conferred on deserving individuals who have made substantial contributions to society. Conferred honoris causa, “for the sake of honour,” these degrees are awarded as one of three types: Doctor of Laws, Doctor of Letters and Doctor of Science.

DR. ANDIS KLEGERISProfessor, Department of Biology, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Klegeris is known for being a dynamic and effective mentor and teacher. His colleagues and students alike commend his innovative, large-classroom, Problem-Based Learning approach to undergraduate education, which requires active participation and extensive problem solving by students. In this unique approach, Professor Klegeris effectively delivers course material alongside fostering valuable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork—something that a former student noted “as one of the most useful skills I gained in my undergraduate degree.”

He is a leading researcher in neurobiology and trains a substantial number of graduate and undergraduate students in an outstanding mentorship environment. Professor Klegeris has supervised 33 undergraduate students in 72 different research assistantships, honours projects, or directed studies during his tenure at UBC Okanagan, in addition to PhD and MSc students, post-doctoral fellows, and research assistants. He is committed to his students’ success and offers them writing experience on peer-reviewed publications. It is no surprise that many students pursue further education in his field of research.

Beyond the campus, Dr. Klegeris continuously exchanges ideas about improving undergraduate learning and has shared his Problem-Based Learning technique with more than ten different universities in seven countries.

DR. SALLY WILLIS-STEWARTSenior Instructor, and Director of the Nutrition Education Center, School of Health and Exercise Sciences, Faculty of Health and Social Development

Dr. Willis-Stewart has been instrumental in education and research on health and well-being at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Her work here began in 2005, when she developed the Human Kinetics Degree curriculum. She has continued to play a large role in building what is now a robust and globally recognized program.

In 2017, Dr. Willis-Stewart implemented the interdisciplinary Heal 100 course—the first course to be offered across the entire student population at UBC. Heal 100 introduces students to the community of health and well-being, with particular emphasis on student health and its ties to academic performance. She is known to be a passionate teacher who strives to connect with students and instill in them both relevant knowledge and a skill set that enables their future academic success and health.

Her impact further spans the faculty, staff, and student populations through the development of creative educational programs and engagement opportunities that are accessible to all. Beyond UBC, Dr. Willis-Stewart provides service to many local and provincial bodies, fostering important links between the community and our University.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

BECKIE SCOTT, O.C.Doctor of Laws, honoris causa

Beckie Scott was an 11-year member of Canada’s national cross-country ski team, retiring in 2006 as Canada’s most decorated athlete in her sport. A three-time Olympian, she is also internationally recognized for her advocacy for clean, fair, doping-free sport.

She won her first World Cup medal in 2001. A year later she won a gold medal in the combined pursuit event at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. She originally finished third in the event but was upgraded to the gold medal when both the winner and runner-up were disqualified for using performance-enhancing drugs.

The incident validated her previous efforts to maintain integrity in sport, beginning with her work in 2001 to help circulate an athletes' petition requesting the establishment of an independent drug-testing body for all World Cup and Olympic cross-country skiing competitions.

At the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, she and partner Sara Renner won silver medals in the team sprint. She retired in 2006 with 17 career World Cup medals, ranked 2nd in the overall World Cup standings.

Even though her racing career is over, she continues her tireless efforts for clean competition, as Chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Athlete Committee.

In recognition of her achievements she been inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, and was recently appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Beckie Scott is also the founder and CEO of Spirit North, a sport-for-development organization working to improve the lives of Indigenous children and youth through the transformative power of sport and play.

Many students don’t realize that when you graduate from UBC, you automatically become a member of alumni UBC and your relationship with the University enters a whole new phase.

You might be surprised at just who your fellow alumni are, and their levels of accomplishment, influence and contribution to society. No matter where you go, you will find yourself in the company of amazing people who are making a real difference in the world—educators, artists, doctors, nurses, business and community leaders—UBC grads who will be your role models, mentors, colleagues and friends.

alumni UBC will help you connect through our email updates, website and social networks. You can participate in our cultural, education and career-building programs, here in Okanagan and around the world through alumni networks as far away as London, Hong Kong and Seoul or as close as Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Toronto.

Make sure to pick up your free Alumni Card at the Alumni Welcome Tent in the Courtyard after the ceremony. It gives you continued access to the UBC Library and online journals, and special pricing on offers from alumni UBC partners.

Whenever you come back to campus, drop by the alumni UBC Engagement Centre, check out the alumni wall, let us know what you’re up to and find out how you can stay involved. And when in Vancouver, be sure to visit the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre. It’s UBC’s home for alumni for life, where you will always be welcome to make alumni connections, attend events, or book your own meetings or celebrations. You can find yourself on the Interactive UBC Alumni Wall too.

Whether you’re staying here in the Okanagan after graduation, travelling or moving away, we are excited to welcome you back to campus for Homecoming on September 28, 2019. Because it’s not goodbye, it’s “see you at Homecoming!”

Remember our motto: Tuum Est (it’s yours). UBC is still yours. It will always be yours. So reach out. Stay in touch. Ask for help when you need it. Lend a hand when you can.
