facilities for Club members. One of the most important

improvements to be seen at this year's Royal Show will be the new "all weather" Woodchop arena. In the past these most popular events have been subject to cancellation or postponement due to the arena being open to the elements. But this year, thanks to the Boral Cyclone Group, Royal Show Woodchopping will be staged in a world class stadium, completely protected from weather.

The Ford Pavilion and other associated buildings within the area at the Epsom Road end of Plummer Avenue, are being redeveloped into a Roller Disco Centre. This like the Hall of Commerce concept will be used the whole year round.

In Centenary Hall the major works include new and additional shearing and holding pens, a new upper stage and new dressing rooms for the shearers.

The interior of the Dairy Industry Pavilion has been completed and new staff facilities have been added to the Big M selling complex, adjacent to the Pavilion.

The Hall of Commerce has received a complete renovation. All the old stands have been removed, a new floor, new lighting, glazing and doorways now provides a big open hall for use between Shows as an international standard basketball stadium. Standholders will have better facilities during the Show, and all their stands will be removable.

Turnstiles at the Railways entrance have been remodelled, and people entering from the V.R.C. Car Park will no doubt appreciate the new approach in the western area. This new work in the redevelopment of the Racecourse underpass affords a more direct approach, landscaping, kerbing, new mercury vapour lighting, more directional signs and easier access through the turnstiles, all of which gives this area a distinct lift.

The Main Arena will be brighter this year with the continuing upgrading of lighting with new mercury vapour units.

Improvements have been made in all the stock pavilions, the pony boxes in the eastern area, the Wool Fashions area within Centre Point, the Sheep Club, the AMP Lawn, and the Farm Machinery area.

The maintenance bill for the R.A.S.V. for the year will exceed $210,000. This is for general maintenance of buildings, roadways and the grounds.

Besides the improvements, alterations and maintenance referred to above — all carried out by the R.A.S.V. —a number of standhoiders have also made changes to their stands. These include, the new Herald and Weekly Times Log Cabin in Plummer Avenue near the junction with Degraves Street; the Bank of New South Wales, under the Chirnside Stand; the Essendon Rotary Club, also in the same area; Mr. Ron Potton, in McNab Street; and Benson Trading in Lennon Avenue.

Improve-ments, Alterations and Maintenance

Since the 1979 Royal Show, over $1,150,000

have been spent on improving buildings and facilities on the Show Grounds for the benefit of our Show patrons.

Of this amount almost a quarter has been expended on the catering facilities. The Royal Luncheon Rooms complex (Plummer Avenue, opposite the R.A.S.V. Administrative Building) has been completely upgraded —the Dining Room, Restaurant and Cafeteria are as good as one would find, and the Carvery along the Degraves Street wall has been adapted to cater for all types of ethnic foods. The Log Cabin construction situated on the corner of Degraves Street and McCracken Avenue, brings a new approach to Show Grounds catering in a relaxed atmosphere of outdoor eating.

Facilities in both the Dog complex and the Horse Bar have also received attention and will be much more pleasant areas in which to relax.

Work on redeveloping the Ringmaster and Casualty complex has commenced, and the old casualty building has been demolished.

The open Gibsonia Stand has been redecked in steel plate on the decking and stairways.

In the R.A.S.V. Administrative Building new offices have been constructed for the Public Relations Department, on the Ground Floor, and alterations have been carried out in the General Office on the First Floor.

The Kennel Control Council has made improvements in the Woodfull Pavilion to accommodate further

Why settle for an hotel? When you can stay at a Chateau. A seasoned traveller tends to take his

international-standard hotels pretty much for granted. After all, one seems much like any other. Which is why our Chateaux take even well-travelled guests by surprise.

Elegance is apparent from the front doors. Venture through the foyers and you'll note that the adornments are tasteful, without ostentation. The staff are warm, without being effusive; attentive, but discreet.

Rooms and suites are appointed for comfort, but with style. Bars are relaxing, intimate. And, as you'd expect, Chateau restaurants serve innovative, as well as traditional, haute cuisine.

Experience the hospitality of a Chateau in Sydney or Perth and our "Grand Chateau" the Old Melbourne Hotel, and you may well ask yourself: why settle for an hotel, when one can

Royal Show Parade of Champions

People's Day (Thursday 25 September), the Royal Show Parade of Champions is a showing of Australia's very best livestock.

Over 50 cattle, 30 horses and ponies, and dairy goats will take part in this special parade — all winners of the "red, white and blue".

Undoubtedly a highlight of the

evening Arena program on

"ARC" Australian Gold Cup Tentpegging

who will win the Gold Cup? —

N.S.W. Police, Army, perhaps the Deniliquin Team?

There are old scores to be settled and the Main Arena will be the venue for another hard fought round of Royal Show tentpegging, this year sponsored by ARC Industries Limited.

Bugs, Batman, Fireworks Spectacular Presented by AMP and BP

For his 25th consecutive year at the Royal

Melbourne Show, "Mr. Fireworks", Syd Howard is planning something really special.

Can you imagine such cartoon favourites as Bugs Bunny and Batman springing to life amid magnificent and spectacular shell bursts and ground effects — and that's not all folks!

The 1980 Fireworks Spectaculars will be presented by AMP and BP.

The James Hardie Massed Highland Bands

Nothing excites or stirs the blood more than a

really good pipe band. And this is why the Massed

Pipe Band display on the evening of the first and final Saturdays of the Show is such a popular Royal Show attraction.

Eighteen of Victoria's top pipe bands combine to thrill Show audiences with their music, colour and marching.

Motorcycle Flat Track Rally

he excitement of top Speedway racing

comes to the Show in heats of the mighty Flat Track Rally.

Six to eight ace riders on fire breathing, growling, speedway motorcycles contest each six lap heat at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

Victoria Mounted Police Musical Ride

For nearly 60 years, the Victoria Police

"Mounties" and their magnificent horses, have thrilled Melbourne audiences with the precision and overall spectacle of their musical ride.

Many people believe the musical ride as performed by the Victoria Police, is the best in the world — true or false this attraction commands a large following.

Even the price will make you smile at New Caledonia. Why settle for an ordinary holiday when you

can have an extraordinary one? Club Med New Caledonia gives you all the excitement of an overseas holiday for the price of a local one.

It's a truly all-inclusive holiday with free sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling, tennis, yoga, archery or just relaxing on the beach or around the pool.

Equipment and expert sporting tuition come free too.

There are picnics, cruises and a daily round of

entertainment. At night there's a cabaret, dancing and a nightclub that only closes when the last person leaves.

Every day sumptuous French meals are served with all the free wine you can drink. 41Pb The price is from just $538 ex-Sydney all up with no extras! Now isn't that something to smile about?

A New Decade "Royal"

or the hundred and thirty two years - covering one

hundred and twenty two Shows -the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and its parent bodies (The National Agricultural Society and the Port Phillip Farmers' Society), have faithfully observed its charter to promote the development of all phases of agricultural, horticultural, viticultural, stock-raising, manufacturing, and industrial resources of this great state of Victoria.

On its twenty six hectare Show Grounds, one of the best in the world, and with its proven ability to educate and entertain, the Royal Melbourne Show is without equal as Victoria's greatest attraction and forum. It provides a rare opportunity to develop a greater understanding between two completely different ways of life -those of the city and country people. For the problems of the man on the land eventually become those of man, woman and child in the city. If for example, the seasons are bad for the farmer we all suffer, likewise the same applies in cases of industrial unrest in key industries. And it is for this reason that such an understanding has never been more important than it is right now.

The Royal Show has always been a people's Show - a place where once a year the people of Victoria can really get together in a relaxed atmosphere. It offers an opportunity for comparison at the highest level, whether it be cattle or cakes, horses or horticulture.

All of these experiences are available for the eleven days and nine nights of the 1980 new decade Royal Melbourne Show.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT AND FUN You must include the Dairy Pavilion when you visit this year's Royal Melbourne Show.

As dairy manufacturers Lactos of Tasmania,

ACMAL of Victoria and the big Australian food group Murray Goulburn Co-operative will show you, there's more to dairy foods than Big M flavoured milk.

Apart from your favourite dairy foods there are new products to try and, of course, the Show is the ideal occasion for the family to sample these products and have fun while doing so.

It can also be educational.

Did you know that, gramme for gramme, cheese contains more protein than beef. Millions of Australians must be already aware of this highly nutritional source because we now eat an average annually of 6-7 kg of cheese, and increasing this each year. In fact, some 80,000 tonnes of this nourishing dairy food is sold yearly in Australia and the variety is enormous.

Cheese Specialists...

The Lactos company from Burnie, Tasmania, alone produces more than 47 varieties of cheese, including many fancy and

non-cheddar types. Lactos proudly specialises

in cheese, and features within its range such recognised household names for quality as St. Claire Swiss Valley, Mersey Valley Vintage, Tasmanian Fancy Gouda and Edam.

Perhaps you are more familiar with their Cradle Valley range of Mild, Tasty and Extra Tasty cheddars, through your local supermarket. Or you may easily have bought their cheese overseas, for Lactos exports to more than 20 countries on five continents.

Anyway, a visit to the Lactos stand will quickly

refresh your memory and your palate. A chat too, with the friendly staff will also make it easy to understand why Lactos is celebrating 25 very successful years at making superb cheese.

Australia's oldest...

One of Australia's oldest established dairy companies is ACMAL, noted for its "Western Star" butters and processed cheese.

However, the smiling ACMAL girls, Helen, Faye and Colleen, and the Manager of the Stand, Joe McColley, will happily show you many other reasons why ACMAL dairy products are

"YOU'VE GOT A NM IN TIE MONTE ."

Through country-fresh Devondale butters, creams, cheeses and milk powders, our national brand, we're creating wonderful products from milk. We also have many other dairy foods to show you. so prominent at your local food store.

Starting with something special for the kids, there's Milk Wiz — a flavoured skim milk powder you can buy by the cup or take-home tin in any of four popular flavours: Chocolate, Strawberry, Banana and Iced Coffee.

And there is Western Star butter, complete with butter curlers, Bonlac skim milk powder and milk jugs, and another show favourite, Falcon Ghee with its special recipe leaflet. This clarified butteroil for shallow frying however, is not regularly retailed elsewhere.

Locating the Murray

Goulburn stand is easy. There's usually an inviting aroma of freshly toasted cheese sandwiches.

Hundreds of hungry Show visitors each year use this excellent and inexpensive service to sample the Co-operative's nationally marketed processed cheddar cheese slices, Devondale Individuals.

During the brief wait, there are prizes to be won for guessing the number of Devondale dairy food products contained in a huge transparent box, free Murray Goulburn show hats for the kids (or anyone else), and other family fun aspects.

Australia's largest ... Murray Goulburn is

actually Australia's largest manufacturing and marketing dairy co-operative and produces a vast range of butters, cheeses, creams, yoghurts, milk powders and fruit juice products — too many dairy foods to list here. And they are always adding to the range. The latest additions are aged cheddar cheeses for gourmets, Cobram Longhorn Tasty and Extra Tasty, which you owe it to yourself to sample. There is also a new butter blend, Devondale Dairy Soft, which spreads easily even when used straight from the

'fridge'. And there.are several long life products you can buy now and consume fresh months later.

Be sure to try these and all the other exciting dairy foods at the Show — and don't forget your flavoured Big M nourishment!

The V.D.I.A. and the A.D.C. will also have stands at the Dairy Pavilion, together with a number of other dairy food companies, who will all be displaying and selling an impressive variety of dairy products this year — more than ever before.

Yes, the Dairy Pavilion has plenty of food for thought and fun, for all the family.

The National Bank Animal Nursery

The affinity, fascination and love for baby

animals is particularly evident in our own young.

And that's why the National Bank Animal Nursery has proven to be such a popular wonderland haven for youngsters visiting the Royal Melbourne Show.

Here they can marvel at all their favourite baby animals including young foxes, lambs, calves and foals, to name a few.

A special selection of Australia's own birds and animals can also be seen.

This is a FREE attraction.

Ethnic Dancing

Sixteen different ethnic dance groups

representing the Croatian, Italian, Greek, Asian, Spanish and Russian Communities will bring their spectacular and colourful national dances to Centre Point during the Show.

Four separate performances will be staged on the evenings of Saturday, 20 September, Sunday, 21 September, Thursday, 25 September (People's Day) and Saturday, 27 September.

The Program planned for Centre Point is similar to that conducted over 10 days by the Festival of All Nationsat the 3rd Asian and Pacific Trade Fair in 1978.

Victorian Government Expo Centre

Technological change and the ways we adapt

to it is the general theme for Government department displays in the Victorian Government Expo Centre this year.

Twenty four departments including the Department of Labor and Industry, Ministry of Transport, Department of State Development, Decentralization and Tourism, and the Department of Agriculture, will profile the developments resulting from the new technology by way of video and photographic displays, working models and practical demonstrations.

Whether we like it or not, technological change has or will make its presence felt to most of us sooner or later, in some form or another — on the workshop floor, in the office, at home. We therefore need to learn as much as we can as quickly as we can and the Expo Centre displays would seem to be a good place to start.

Personnel from most Departments will be on hand to assist with explanations and queries.

Show Grounds Clean Up Campaigns

his year, the council of the Royal Agricultural

Society of Victoria has invited Alcoa of Australia to participate in a "clean-up" campaign on the Show Grounds.

Alcoa will establish a "Cash-a-Can" centre on the corner of McCracken Avenue and Skene Street where children visiting the Show will receive 45 cents per kg. of aluminium cans.

Alcoa has been responsible for implementing many such schemes which have proved highly successful at the Moomba Festival in Melbourne and Sydney's Royal Easter Show, as well as setting up permanent cash-a-can centres throughout Melbourne and Sydney suburbs.

Can litter bags will be freely available to Show visitors particularly children, for the duration of the Show.

This clean up program has the support of the "Keep Australia Beautiful" Council and will, it is hoped, result in a significantly cleaner Show Grounds.

The Alcoa can man will be at the 1980 Royal Show to distribute special aluminium can collection bags. Soft drinks in aluminium cans will be sold widely throughout the Show this year and the Alcoa Cash-A-Can Centre on the corner of Skene Street and McCracken Avenue will be there to buy the empties back at 450/kg, that's a cent a can!

Every drop of new Mobil Super absorbs and holds everything your engine can throw at it. For 20,000 kilometres or 12 months. That's super protection, from the Super Drop.

Every engine oil protects your car. Some for 5,000 kms. Some for 10,000 kms. But new Mobil Super's 20,000 kilometres Protection Reserve goes on protecting your car even if you go past your normal oil change.

By incorporating the very

latest technological developments, the Super Drop has set new standards of engine protection. Here is a new formula motor oil that exceeds all car manufacturers' engine oil warranty requirements.

In addition, new Mobil Super oil prolongs the life of your engine, reduces oil consumption, and helps cold starting.

Ned's Last Stand and Lots More at the Police Exhibition 1980

A visual display depicting Ned Kelly's

last stand at the Glenrowan Inn 100 years ago, will be a feature at the 1980 Victoria Police Exhibition.

The special display will include Ned's armour, wanted posters and a number of other items used in the times of the infamous Kelly gang.

Bush walking is a great way to relax and really enjoy what nature has to offer. But there are precautions which must be taken and rules

adhered to. The "do's and dont's" of

bush walking will be practically explained by members of the Search and Rescue Squad during the Show at the Police Exhibition. A must for bush walking enthusiasts.

The Boating Squad is also vitally concerned with our safety, particularly in relation to the water sports. This year the Squad will concentrate on the safety aspects of Water Skiing and with summer not all that far away, their advice will be particularly timely.

Undoubtedly one of the most popular demonstrations at the Police Exhibition, will be that staged by members of the Dog Squad. Obedience demonstrations and how the dogs assist at the scene of the crime will be the highlights of these programs.

Another area where Police dogs have proved invaluable is in the detection of drugs and personnel, from Victoria Dock and Customs will have a dog to show how it can detect drugs which have been concealed on a person.

The Traffic Operations Group will hand out sample traffic infringement notices, demonstrate the Breathalizer (so watch it!) and stage a display of vehicle parts which have caused accidents.

Happy Honda will make a return visit to the Exhibition to talk to the children, there are free Show bags and identification tags and children can have their fingerprints taken.

Police Cadets will give frequent skipping exhibitions, there will be unarmed combat demonstrations and Police Dog Displays.

A great Exhibition.

Feed the Man Meat New Meat Hall Program

he "Feed the Man Meat" theme

complements a whole new program of continuous displays and demonstrations in the Meat Hall this year.

Butchers from the Meat and Allied Trades' Federation will demonstrate their skills in meat cutting and explain the preparation of budget cuts.

In the natural progression from butcher shop to table, experts from Monier Consumer Services and Students of the Emily McPherson and William Angliss Colleges will show that there are so many exciting ways to cook and serve meat.

A Special Consumer Advisory Service will be conducted by the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation and free recipes will be distributed by both AMLC and Gas and Fuel Corporation.

Of special interest to the farmer will be a series of hide improvement promotions by CSIRO Leather Research Division which will also stage demonstrations covering various stages of leather manufacture — of interest to all Show patrons.

Show Bags

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria

maintains strict supervision over the contents of Show bags and the method used to sell them.

Every vendor must present the Society with a list of all articles to be sold in the Show bag, and their respective retail price. The sale price of the Show bag must not exceed the total retail value of all the enclosed items.

Show bags and their contents are scrutinized by the Public Health Department with Society representatives at a special preview open to members of the news media. Should the slightest doubt be held by a Health Officer about the safety of any article, that article is rejected and the vendor requested to substitute or modify it.

In the sale of Show bags, the Society specifies that all contents are to be prominently displayed before the public at all times.

Throughout the Show, Society Inspectors make random purchases of bags and if they find any discrepancy in the contents as displayed, immediate action is taken by the Society in having the vendor rectify the situation.

Amusements and Rides

an you imagine it? —a 20 passenger "train"

gliding gently back and forth up the sides of a 52' diameter track then, you've guessed it, a full revolution, once, twice, three times clockwise, the same anti-clockwise. This is Super Loops, a new $400,000 ride imported from America by Wittingslow Amusements and it's coming to the Melbourne Show.

And that's not all, Wittingslow's have spent a further $650,000 for "Pirat", a magnificent new boat swing ride from Germany.

The ride starts with a smooth back and forth motion and increases in speed in both directions until it reaches a height of approximately 66 feet (equal to 75 degrees), at which time riders experience the sensation of weightlessness.

Both the new rides, combine with all the other Royal Show favourites, side shows and fun parlors set up in "fun zones" around the Show Grounds to create all the "fun of the fair".
