Welcometo Our WorldThere used to be a small community in southern Hillsborough County that was known almost solely as an agricultural area. It was years before anyone wanted to visit or consider developing the land, which was considered mostly rural. A few industrial companies started to take up residency here, but Tampa residents rarely knew anything about Ruskin or Apollo Beach. That was then.

SouthShore, as the area has become known, is now the place to be in Hillsborough County! It’s growing and thriving and will continue to do so as more and more residents and businesses move here. Last year, in particular, was a prosperous time for SouthShore businesses and the chamber. We are home to a community college, two large hospitals, arts and cultural venues, industrial and agricultural interests, residential communities and tourism destinations.

With three major roadways – U.S. Hwy 41, Interstate 75 and U.S. Hwy 301 – running through SouthShore’s central location, we offer close proximity to Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Orlando. The community is home to the beautiful Alafia and Little Manatee rivers, both of which flow directly into Tampa Bay.

We are an ultimate ecotourism destination with so many treasures to discover. Daily sunsets, waterside dining, annual manatee visits and beautiful nature preserves are just some of the unique opportunities we have available for residents and visitors to enjoy.

ON THE COVER: A picturesque view

of Tampa Bay from the shores of southern Hillsborough County.

This issue of the SouthShore destination magazine is published by the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Tampa Bay Times.

137 Harbor Village Lane, Apollo Beach, FL 33572

The SouthShore Chamber of Commerce merged two historic chambers in 2011, combining Apollo Beach and Ruskin. The Apollo Beach chamber was founded in 1985 originally as an all-volunteer welcome center. The Ruskin chamber dates back to 1928 and was the very first chamber of commerce in southern Hillsborough County.

These two communities of SouthShore offer the ideal blend of natural beauty, relaxation and recreation. The area combines both waterfront and rural communities that are fast becoming business destinations as Tampa Bay grows.

The mission of the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce is to commit ourselves to growth through proper planning, new membership acquisition and servicing of existing members through value-added projects. The organization seeks continuous improvement in the ability to provide leadership needed for effective economic development. The vision is to preserve the historic heritage while meeting the changing business needs of the community.

Come discover the excitement of SouthShore!

Donna Castillo-Budd has changed plenty of lives for more than 35 years. Budd has been an inspiration to thousands of families and an unsung hero to the SouthShore community. As a community service officer with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since 1979, she started working in the first substation in Ruskin. Shortly thereafter, Budd founded Deputies Darlin’s, a nonprofit organization that helps SouthShore children and families in need during the holidays. Budd and her volunteers secured new donated toys, which were wrapped and distributed to parents so they can provide a Christmas morning for local children. Last year, 52 families received gifts. Although now retired, Budd pledges to continue her community work with Deputies Darlin’s while being a grandmother to her six grandchildren.

Community and chamber of commerce members elected Shannon Brown 2014 SouthShore honorary mayorafter hearing her emotionally pitch her platform. Chamber president Carrie Elwell, who also happens to be Brown’s boss as co-owner of Kids R Kids Learning Academy in Gibsonton, persuaded Brown to run after hearing her story. Brown’s drive came from her late husband, Aaron Ziemba, who in 2011 died from brain cancer at 34, just 58 days after they wed in Ruskin. The emotional plea resulted in victory for Brown’s philanthropic cause, Refuse to Lose, and for SouthShore, which designated her the second honorary mayor after a monthlong charity drive brought in more than $7,000. Her commitment to community has continued throughout the year as she continues coordinating charity events and fundraising drives. Paleontologist Frank Garcia first began collecting fossils in the phosphate mines of Polk and Hillsborough counties. His explorations led to new discoveries, including a new species of antelope as well as a pigmy sea cow. In the ‘70s, his work with the Smithsonian resulted in historic discoveries, including the discovery

of early Ice Age fossils in a Ruskin shell mine that was described as “finding a new chapter in the history of life.” Garcia’s paleontology work in Florida is legend. He has authored six books and had the pleasure to teach more than 125,000 local children the past 25 years, including several years as guest teacher at the HCC SouthShore campus.
