Linwood homeowner Joy Priest said the cycleway will take away parking outside her house. She fears it will cause her property value to drop. She said it has very little off-road parking and when the cycleway goes in there will be nowhere to park. “I just feel how will we ever sell this property? I think it’s going to devalue it. BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

A new cycleway linking the eastern suburbs to the central city is firing up Linwood resi-dents affected by the plans.

At drop-in sessions held on the plans for the Rapanui-Shag Rock Cycleway route between Fitzgerald Ave and Linwood Park, a number of concerns were raised.

The loss of parking, cyclist safety at intersections, and the pushing of vehicle traffic onto nearby streets were among the concerns.

The $22.4 million cycleway is one of 13 to be built in the city over the next seven years. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

Linwood homeowner Joy Priest said the cycleway will take away parking outside her house. She fears it will cause her property value to drop.

Her daughter lives in the home, which is on the corner of Marlborough St and Aldwins Rd.

She said it has very little off-road parking and when the cycleway goes in there will be nowhere to park.

“I just feel how will we ever sell this property? I think it’s going to devalue it. If we had

an open home no-one could even park near it.”

City councillor Yani Johan-son said some people at the drop-in session got quite ‘up-set’ and questioned the safety of parts of the route.

He said the design “did not feel right”.

At some intersections, cy-clists would have to ride in the middle of the road with cars travelling either side of them.

The loss of parking in high density areas, and plans to close Worcester St, to vehicle traffic at its intersection with England St were also concerns.

“I support us having a good cycleway connecting the east to the central city, but I’m concerned about the route designs,” he said.

City council assets and networks unit manager Chris Gregory said the city council is working through the feedback received.

It will look into whether there are ways to make changes to ad-dress people’s concerns, he said.

“The designers are already working through this process, however, it is not always pos-sible to resolve issues to every-one’s satisfaction, especially where there are conflicting views in the community.”

MERIDIAN SCAM TARGET ELDERLYSomerfield residents were among elderly people who have been targeted in a Merid-ian scam. Police have received 11 separate reports in relation to the scam, which is thought to have netted about $20,000 already. Elderly people in Prebbleton, Murray Hill, Rangiora, Riccarton and Mt Pleasant have also been targeted. Detec-tive Sergeant Jennifer Hooke said police understood that one of the scammers phones the victims posing as a Meridian or other power company staff member. Police are urging people to report anything suspicious.

BOUNDARY REVIEW PETITIONThe Barrington Issues Group has started a petition urging the city council to reassess the representation review ward boundar-ies. The petition relates to a number of ar-eas, and opposes the proposed Addington boundary being at Selwyn St rather than Antigua St. The petition received about 20 signatures in its first day on Wednesday. People can sign it in some shops in Add-ington, including Addington Butcher and Resene Paint. The petition will be sent to the city council before December 21.

SWITCHBOARD, WOOD ON FIREFirefighters were called to Alto Plastics Ltd in Waltham, on Wednesday to a switch-board on fire. Crews from Sockburn, St Albans and Christchurch central attended at 4.08am. The fire was put out with dry powder before it spread. Firefighters were also called to a fire at St John’s Church, Woolston, shortly after at 5.37am. A pile of wood had been set alight next to the Scout den which burnt the outside of the building. The fire was being treated as suspicious.

BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

A busy community hub has been granted more than $37,000 towards improving its new facilities just weeks after it moved in.

The city council agreed to give $37,605 to the Rowley Resource Centre from the Christchurch Mayoral Earth-quake Relief Fund.

The money will go towards making its new home fit for purpose.

The centre recently bought its own premises and shifted about 250m down the road to its new home.

The centre was developed as a priority community development intervention in a high deprivation area.

City councillors discussed the grants at the council meet-ing on Thursday.

It was an easy decision to grant money to the centre, however, an application for a grant by Southern Ballet caused debate.

Southern Ballet initially requested $400,000 to go towards buying a property on Carlyle St, Sydenham.

Southern Ballet has been leasing the premises since having to move from the Arts Centre following the February 2011 earthquake.

The Arts Centre was the home of Southern Ballet for more than 35 years.

The staff recommendation was $244,000 but city

councillors were not comfortable with putting that much towards it.

Councillor Phil Clearwater wanted to see money granted towards the cause, but thought half was appropriate.

“What they’re doing is very much part of the Sydenham Master Plan, they are an active arts group and have good links with CPIT so I think to support them we should see at least 50 per

cent given, so that would be $200,000.”

Councillor Tim Scandrett said he thought $200,000 would be a good amount.

“They’ve done amazing things since the earthquake, they’ve been up and running, and I think we should support them, there’s no question for me.”

City councillors voted to approve both grants.

NEW BEGINNINGS: The Rowley Resource Centre has only just been blessed, and it has now received a $37,605 grant from the city council.

Linwood College relieving principal Linda Tame

For the last six months I have been back in a school principal’s chair – this time at Linwood College.

What immediately struck me was that the young people of Linwood College, like teenagers all over New Zealand, are talented, vibrant and keen to contribute to society.

I have found the Linwood College students friendly, respectful and proud of themselves, their whānau, and their school. And they certainly deserve to be. I’ve been the proud supporter of a top Canterbury academic prize-winner, of a South Island champion saxophonist, of top

sports teams and of an award- winning kapa haka group, just to mention a few examples.

More importantly, I have seen young people repeatedly contributing to our wider Linwood community. Just recently I received another email thanking us for the support a group of our students provided at a week-end community event.

But the real question for me is whether we are harnessing the real potential of our youth? Have you stopped to ask young people what they think about the real issues in our community? The young people I have contact with have strong opinions about the future. They want equity for all, they want environmen-tal solutions, and they want to make a difference.

In schools we have traditionally adopted the ‘teacher knows it all’ approach. But that is changing. We have found that if we give students more control over their own learning, by ‘flipping’ the classroom, their outcomes improve dramatically.

In our youth we have huge untapped talent and potential. Perhaps we should be following the classroom lead and ‘flipping’ aspects of community leadership. Radical, perhaps, but let’s realise that amazing Linwood potential!

So young but so much to offer

THE FLAME FILES BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

I missed writing the Flame Files last week. The reason being I was part of the 35,000 people who watched Fleetwood Mac in Dunedin.

Both the show and the venue were fabulous but it did cross my mind that it is reassuring to be in a country where that number of people can congregate without the fear of an extremist spread-ing mayhem. We take it for granted but in some parts of the world the reality is dif-ferent. And that is terrifying in itself.

The large fire at Brian Ford Engineering on Tues-day night resulted in one of our newest firefighters being treated in hospital, he was released the next morning. Here’s hoping he makes a full recovery.

This is just a reminder that amongst the challenge

and thrill of fighting a large and fully involved fire, what we are asking our crews to do is inherently dangerous. We have equipment and procedures to minimise the risk but it always remains.

Our duckling affair con-tinues. And I know the re-ports are repetitive. But one in Marshlands on Thursday last week took my fancy.

Mother duck was con-certedly creating a traffic hazard while the ducklings were deep in a drain. The final radio report stated four very dirty firefighters had emerged with four duck-lings.

That’s above and beyond. But I wouldn’t expect any-thing different. Well done the St Albans crew.

DISCUSSION OVER BROKEN BOTTLESThe issue of broken bottles on the footpath near Waltham Park will be discussed tomor-row at the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board meeting. Waltham Community Cot-tage has written to the board expressing concerns with broken bottles, considering a lot of people would be walk-ing there to go swimming at Waltham Lido Pool. It was also concerned with beer boxes and bottles being left on the grass. The cottage suggested another rubbish bin could be installed.

TREE REPLANTING LOOKED ATTree removal and replanting at Sydenham Cemetery and Somerfield Park will be looked at tomorrow. Public consultation on what sort of trees should be planted has been carried out, and the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board has been asked to approve one of two options. The first would see the cemetery northern boundary be planted with maple species, the eastern boundary with kowhai species and the park boundary with totara species. This is the preferred option derived from the feedback received in consultation. The second option would see the cemetery northern boundary planted

with pittosporum or camellia species, the eastern boundary with magnolia species or field maples and the park eastern boundary with upright tulips or upright hornbeams.

STREETS CLOSED FOR REPAIRSWoolston’s Oban Pl and Stacey Pl, both closed on Thursday so Stronger Christchurch Infra-structure Rebuild Team workers can repair the damaged kerbs, channels, footpaths, berms, storm water systems and the road surfaces. The closures will be in place during the day for about three weeks. They will re-open each night. Mean-while, Spreydon’s Lyttelton St, will have a one-way system in place from today until Christ-mas. Northbound traffic will be detoured along Roberta Drive, Barrington and Frankleigh Sts.

GRANTS FOR THE HAGUE TRIPThe Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board has granted money to Cashmere resident Amelia McLuskie and Cracroft resident Evangeline Maffey to go towards their trip to The Hague. The pair will attend the New Zealand at Hague Inter-national Model United Nations in January and February. Both were granted $500 each from the board’s youth development fund.

After six years, the highly-antici-pated Te Hapua: Halswell Centre has opened with celebrations planned all week.

Planning for the centre began in 2009, with about $23m ear-marked for the development to replace the old Halswell library.

The city council has dubbed it the biggest project it has opened since the earthquakes.

City council director facilities and infrastructure rebuild David Adamson said with a price tag of $23 million it provided good value for the community.

The new centre houses not only a new look library, but has a 5000 sq m outdoor area with a swimming pool and community centre.

Other facilities will include a barbecue area, onsite car parks, bicycle stands, picnic seating and lockers.

Opening celebrations will continue throughout the week, including heritage and multicultural days.

The new centre will be almost double the size of the Upper Ric-carton Community and School Library. It will also be the first time the council has offered so

many services under one roof.City council libraries and

information manger Caroline Robertson said this is a much bigger facility to cater the needs

of a rapidly growing population.“We’ve really worked closely

with the community to make sure that this actually meets their needs.”

Cashmere resident David Chen is living his mountaineering dreams, for himself and his best friend.

He has been selected into the New Zealand Alpine Team.

His selection comes close to the anniversary of his friend’s death, who died a year ago in a rock fall while climbing in China.

The best mates shared ambitions of conquering the world’s most challenging mountains.

“He was really important to me and I want to carry on the dream,” Mr Chen said.

An incident shortly after his friend’s death when he too was caught in a rock fall while at-tempting to climb Mt Cook had not put him off the sport.

“I got a bad feeling after the rock fall and I took that as a warning and turned back. I’ve learned to listen to those feel-ings. You can always try again another day.”

These experiences were added incentives for the 20-year-old to apply to become a member of the alpine team mentoring programme for climbers aged 18-25.

He was one of nine selected

for trials, six of whom made the team, after a rigorous boot camp in Queenstown in late October.

Mr Chen is part of the sus-tainability and outdoor educa-tion programme at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Tech-nology.

CPIT manager of the sustain-ability and outdoor education programmes Dr David Ir-win said Mr Chen was intent on his personal development as a climber.

Mr Chen’s goal is to use his degree and alpine team experi-ence to get both New Zealand

and international guiding quali-fications.

“I’d like to be the first inter-nationally qualified Chinese guide.”

The New Zealand Alpine Team concept was introduced in 2013, to support and encour-age aspiring young Kiwi alpin-ists looking to improve their mountain skills.

As a team member, Mr Chen will be given three years of in-tensive training, with trips and expeditions around the world, including the Canadian Rockies in 2017, to further his climbing skills.

WHERE HE BELONGS: CPIT student and newly elected New Zealand Alpine Team member David Chen in the mountain environment he loves.

BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

It was third-time lucky for St Martins hairdresser Libby Morton.

The 19-year-old has been named the Apprentice of the Year for the Northern-South Region at the HITO Annual Awards.

She is in her fourth year of her apprenticeship with True Grit Hair Spa, on Manchester St.

After entering in the competi-tion two years previously, she finally won the title this year.

“I was stoked.”The annual awards celebrate

success in hair and beauty.Miss Morton travelled to Wel-

lington for the ceremony at Te Papa museum on November 22 to receive her award, where she was also in the running for the national award.

Although she did not take out national apprentice of the year, her salon True Grit, was named HITO Training Salon of the Year.

Owner Jacqui Victor, of Halswell, said the win was unexpected.

“Winning the award inspires us to keep going, especially after losing our salon during

the Christchurch earthquake. I look forward to inspiring other salons to take on apprentices and get involved in training”.

Miss Morton will go for her qualification next year, and has been doing a bit of everything including cutting, colouring and styling.

Although she enjoys it all, styling is her favourite.

Irelands care about their owners, tenants and contractors. The business runs on four core principles: communication, integrity, customer care and results. They

believe that these principles are the reason behind their success.

The business is passionate about achieving

market rents for their owners and is focused on the crucial role of matching the right tenants to properties. Irelands take total control when managing their clients’ properties; high occupancy rates along with timely rent collection, regular property inspections and managing maintenance concerns.

Caroline and Murray recognise how important it is to keep owners informed and recently invested in a unique application. This initiative now allows property managers to provide owners with a quality, customised report after every quarterly property inspection.

“We know that time is precious and many of our owners are time-poor,” explains Caroline Ireland. “Often they don’t want to deal with property issues, which can involve conflict. A property manager allows them more time and removes the worry as they know the experts are looking after their investment.”

Based on numerous client testimonials, the team have total confidence that owners are getting value for money when placing a property in their capable hands. “We will take over the stress of dealing with tenants, rent arrears and problems,” Caroline adds. Irelands also monitor the market regularly.

Ready to Go with the experts at Irelands

Irelands Property Management is proudly owned and operated by Caroline and Murray Ireland. They and their dedicated team are experts in property management and

love what they do! “In Christchurch, current rents are trending downwards because of an oversupply of rental homes, meaning tenants have a wide choice. Having the experts to help makes it much easier to get a reliable tenant.”

To receive a free rental appraisal and find out more about Irelands, contact them today on 03-377 2090 or www.irelands.co.nz

The longer hours will be extremely handy for customers who now have the opportunity to drop their vehicles in for repairs

before heading to work and can pick them

up at the end of the working day.Brendon and Jo-ann Stevens took over

the business eight years ago. He had worked for the previous owner for five years and purchased the service station when he retired.

Since then, Brendon and his team have been very busy looking after the motoring needs of the people of Burnham and surrounding areas. This includes customers who come from Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston and West Melton, and some of their clientele have been with the business since it began operating 30 years ago.

The workshop at Burnham Auto Services is an extremely busy place. The two full-time mechanics and one part-timer cover all mechanical needs in an efficient, reliable and honest manner, which might explain why customers keep coming back.

“We only repair what needs to be done, and when working on a vehicle always contact the owner, to advise what repairs are needed and the likely cost of those repairs, and ensure they’re happy for us to go ahead,” advises Brendon.

They have recently purchased another scanner, which gives them the technology to accurately diagnose and maintain late model vehicles. To celebrate, Burnham Auto Services is offering a vehicle scan for the special price of only $30, from now until Christmas.

As a Challenge service station, Burnham Auto Services provides a personal full forecourt service for petrol and diesel. They have LPG swap a bottle for gas and sell a range of products in the shop. This includes confectionary, coffees, automotive parts and more. In addition, the team at Burnham Auto Services sell, fit and balance Kumho and Maxxis tyres.

There are also changes in the wind for

Burnham Auto Services, with a wider selection of items planned for the shop. Following on from the recent Lincoln, Tai Tapu and Darfield Challenge renovations, Burnham Motors Challenge upgrade is due within the next six months. This will result in increased fuel storage capacity and a facelift as part of Challenge’s re-imaging so it is no wonder that Brendon and his team are pretty excited.

Burnham Auto Services is located just behind the Burnham Military Camp at 36 Russell Road, Burnham. Phone 03 347 6607, and they will be open over the holiday break.

LONGER HOURS OF TRADING FOR

Opawa principal to take on

So Grant can you tell me a bit about yourself?

Well I’m principal of Opawa School and have been here for 13 years. I was a previously a teacher at Opawa School for eight years. I had a four-year gap in between when I had my first principal’s role at Harewood School. I live in the Opawa community too.

When did you take up the principal’s role at Opawa School?

In 2003. The previous prin-cipal retired and I saw the job was advertised, and having worked at the school previously I enjoyed the diverse community and wanted to be able to see if I would be appointed.

Where had you been before?Since I started teaching I spent

my first year teaching on the West Coast at Cobden School in Greymouth. Then I moved to Christchurch and all of my prin-

cipal’s career has been in Christ-church schools. I’ve taught at Redcliffs, Governors Bay, Hoon Hay, St Martins and Opawa and Harewood. I was principal at Harewood and then Opawa.

What do you love about Opawa School?

The thing I really enjoy is the diversity in the community.

What has kept you there for so long?

The variety of challenges and opportunities at the school. It’s a great school to be part of. The fact that we have a strong con-nection with families and great staff and the school is well sup-ported by parents.

Why have you made the de-cision to leave after so long?

I made the decision to resign this year. I’ve been thinking about my future in educa-tion and I’m looking to work from next year as an educa-tion consultant where I would

be supporting other principals and school leaders. I’ve been fortunate to have the taste of that kind of work through first-time principal mentoring which I’ve been doing for the last five years as part of the first-time principal programme.

Did you have that sort of mentoring when you became a principal?

Unfortunately no, at the first year of the programme I was in my second year of being a principal, so by that stage I was deemed too experienced to qualify [laughs]. I would have loved to have had that. It is pretty daunting because there’s a lot to learn that isn’t covered in teacher training.

So how do you spend your time when you are away from school?

My hobbies and interests include playing guitar and I like to get out to do a bit of tramp-ing, anywhere in the Canterbury region.

I see Opawa pupils went on an outdoor camp earlier this year, that might have been under your influence?

Yes, earlier this year a class went up to Arthurs Pass. It is something I actually initiated

many years ago when I came to Opawa School as a teacher. I had been involved in running camps at Arthurs Pass when I was at St Martins. I learned the value. They do enjoy it, it’s a unique experience for them to get out to the mountains, and they can see a bit of snow on the mountains. They also get to ride on the train which for many children it is their first opportu-nity to do so.

Do you find those sort of activities important for chil-dren?

Absolutely, it’s the challenge of being away from home, so the person getting out to the out-doors and getting the challenge to go outside their comfort zone. It’s really great to see the differ-ence it makes to children who are a bit tentative and able to get through those challenges.

If you have had a child attend Opawa School in the last 13 years, Grant Stedman would have been their principal. But he is now retiring from the role. Bridget Rutherford spoke to him about what he loves about Opawa and why his teachers would be surprised he ended up as a principal

Grant Stedman

FUTURE PLANS: Opawa School principal Grant Stedman is looking forward to working with first-time principals.

CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ CHOIR

The Christchurch Boys’ Choir was established in 1985 by singing teacher Clifton Cook. Since then, nearly 500 Christ-church boys have been a part of it – including well-known New Zealand opera singer Jared Holt and former Crusader and former All Black Andy Ellis.

The club will celebrate its 30th birthday with a gala style concert on December 5 at St Margaret’s College. The September 2010 earthquake destroyed the choir’s rehearsal space at the Oxford Tce Baptist Church, and also led to the can-cellation of the 25th anniversary celebrations.

Since 1985, the choir has toured within New Zealand and overseas to Japan and Australia, and has performed with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as well as the world-renowned Vienna Boys’ Choir. Earlier this year members performed at the opening event for the ICC Cricket World Cup in Christchurch.

new challengeWas becoming a principal

always the goal? No, it wasn’t and it kind of

developed as I progressed. I just looked ahead to the next challenge, as I gained more confidence it became something I looked to do.

What is the trick?I think it’s really important to

understand your school is part of a community. So it’s really important to build relationships with that community so every-one feels a part of that school community and I think that’s the thing we do well at Opawa.

Speaking of relationships with pupils, I saw a photo of you dressed up as Harry Potter at school.

Oh yes, I know the one. It’s good to have a bit of fun, it helps to keep you young your-self.

What have you learnt from some of the pupils?

It’s hard to identify one thing. I think it’s being able to see things from another perspec-tive and I think that’s some-thing that’s really important for people to be able to do. Children have a very unique perspective about the way they think about things.

And you spend a lot of time around children, do you have any of your own?

Yes, I have two adult children and the eldest daughter lives in the North Island and she gave us our first grandchild recently. She’s a full-time mum now but she was working as an optom-

etrist. Our son lives in Christ-church and is a refrigeration engineer.

Let’s turn the tables now, what were you like at school?

I think if you would speak to any of my teachers they would have been very surprised to learn I would become a teacher, in fact I was surprised. If you spoke to me at primary school I would have said teaching’s not something that I thought I would do. I wasn’t really thinking about what I would do at that stage.

And did you go to teachers college in Christchurch?

I went to teachers college in Dunedin, that’s where I grew up. Once I graduated I moved to the West Coast for one year before teaching brought me to Christ-church. I met my wife Kerrie, in my first year teaching at Cobden in Greymouth.

Oh is she a teacher as well?Yes, she is deputy principal at

Papanui Primary School. And there will be a farewell

ceremony held tomorrow for you, do you know much about it?

Yes, a lot has been surprise so I have been instructed to keep my nose out of it [laughs].

MAGIC: Mr Stedman and pupil Dyme Gaul both dressed up as Harry Potter as part of the school’s book character day.

As you walk through the doors of The Tannery in Woolston, your senses spring to life as you are greeted by the multiple

fragrance of flowers, which tantalise the senses and draw you immediately toward Aromaunga Flowers Ltd. Their shop environment is nothing like the traditional florist because as you step through the door, you are surrounded by nature and feel as if you’re strolling through a garden or park.

Aromaunga Flowers Ltd is owned and operated by the lovely mother, daughter team of Elisabeth and Hannah along with a creative and talented team of florists. Their years of experience and love of nature shine through each of their arrangements and through the stimulating and knowledgeable conversations they engage in. They only have local/NZ grown flowers in store, nothing imported! Just a really important point of difference for them.

“I love nature. Everything about it and flowers are an accent which highlight any person’s day and inspire people to reconnect to the natural world,” Elisabeth shares while she is weaving branches into a wreath.

“I wanted to create a haven for people to enjoy, where they can experience a little

slice of nature within a retail space. We have trinkets and treasures to accentuate any home or office space. We offer ready-made arrangements, or come in and we can work together to create your mind’s desire.”

George Harrison said, “Everybody should have themselves regularly

overwhelmed by nature.” That is the mantra of Aromaunga Flowers.

Step inside and feel overwhelmed by nature.

HARD WORKER: The Kip McGrath Barrington star of the month for November is Uthara Varma. She received the award for being hard working and always lighting up the classroom. “Uthara makes mature deci-sions regarding which aspects of maths she needs to focus on and planning her programme then becomes a team effort resulting in a very good outcome.”

Linwood Avenue School pupils have been looking after chickens as part of a Living World unit. The unit focused on an experience to link in with life cycles, and animal characteristics. Teacher Jane Thomson said it had been a “wonderful experience” and the pupils had become attached to the young birds. The unit also included a trip to Orana Park.

Fluffy friendsSt Peter’s School pupils got up close and personal to some robots recently. The pupils have been learning from Science Alive! about programming the robots. Principal Pamela Arthurs said they enjoyed meeting an amusing voice controlled and touch-sensitive robot and had lots of fun challenges programming their EV3 robots.

Muscle People Physiotherapy clinics in the Central City and Bishopdale

[Edition datE]2

Good running technique will make your runs feel less tiring, reduce your risk of injury, and ultimately

be more enjoyable. Muscle People Physiotherapists specialise in assessing and improving running technique whether you are a competitive runner or just running for fun.

Start getting better now with these basic tips:

POSTURE• Keep your head straight

Look straight ahead of you, about 30-40 metres out in front and avoid looking down at your feet. Looking down will create tension in your neck and shoulders.• Shoulders back and down

Your shoulders should be back and down not up by your ears. Keep them relaxed and avoid tensing them. Don’t hunch over as this restricts breathing.• Keep your elbows at 90 degreesYour elbows should be bent at a 90 degree angle. Try to swing your arms forward and back, not across your body. This arm movement helps to propel you forward. Your hands should be relaxed, but don’t let them flop. Tight hands can cause tension all the way up to the back and shoulders.• Solid coreFocus on keeping your core (trunk)

firm, though not rigid, and straight and your hips and shoulders level and relaxed. Keeping this position in your hips can help prevent low back and hip pain.

FOOT STRIKE AND LEG POSITION• Don’t strike the ground too heavilyGood running is light and quiet. You should land in the middle of your foot with a slightly bent knee. Whatever your weight, your feet should not slap loudly as they hit the ground. Light steps are more efficient and cause less stress to the body and landing on the middle of your foot is the safest way to land for most recreational runners.

That’s the basics but there’s always more we can do to help. Try these:RUNFIT – The technical edgeMuscle People Physiotherapy & YMCA gym have a running group in Hagley Park – RunFit, led by a Physiotherapist and Canterbury competitive runner, and a Personal Trainer from the YMCA gym. RunFit focuses on running technique which is vital to improving speed, reducing injuries and making running more enjoyable for both regular runners and the beginner. RunFit is ideal for regular runners who are looking to challenge themselves, as well as the beginning runner who wants to start with good technique and the guidance of professionals.

Running should be as easy as putting one foot in front of the other right? Anyone can run, but having good technique can make it feel so much easier.

Magical Marcella.....owners have purchased4 Marcella Gardens, Aidanfield 3 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 1 living room | 2 dining rooms | 2-car garage | Listing #: PI39779

If you’re looking for a great house and a great buy, then look no further.

Perfect for both young executives and maybe even retirees, you can take

confidence in the TC2 land and freehold title of 450m2. The house I would describe as a “sun trap” and features three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, with en suite and walk-in robe off the master. There are two living areas to enjoy, opening onto a private outdoor entertaining area – great for the summer barbecues. Add to this the double internal access garage and solid brick construction, this great home should

tick all the boxes on your list. Once again, don’t forget that

our vendors have purchased and need this sold yesterday!

Open Home dates: Saturday, November 28, 1pm to 1.30pm; Sunday, November 29, 1pm to 1.30pm; Saturday, December 5, 1pm to 1.30pm; and Sunday, December 6, 1pm to 1.30pm.

See you at the open home or before for a private viewing, contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 555 7079.

THREE FESTIVE COURSES

TRIBUTE TO PROMINENTLEADING JAZZMEN

Doug Caldwell

Doug Kelly

Two legends of the Christchurch Big Band scene, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, will be celebrated in a tribute concert to their music in the best way possible.

The Garden City Big Band will play original music and arrangements by the two Dougs from an era when swing music and big band jazz were celebrated on the airwaves and the dance halls of New Zealand.

Now both over 80 years old, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, along with musical director Lana Law have worked with the Garden City Big Band to bring their music to life. Originals like 'Wakatipu Environs', 'Thanks Bill' and 'Douglas Delight' sit along tasty workings of well known songs 'Days of Wine and Roses','Scrapple from the Apple', and even 'Jeepers Creepers'.

Established Jazz Diva and Doug Kelly's granddaughter, Kate Taylor joins the band on vocals.
