Pamela Atkinson is an energetic leader serving on the Board
of Regents. She is a friend of Southern Utah University,
making sound and conscientious decisions for the betterment of
the Institution. Her statewide reputation of being a hardworking
and caring civic leader only further benefits SUU, and the entire
Utah System of Higher Education. A former vice pre.sident for
Mission Services at lntermountain Health Care, she has a history
of selfless service to others. Born into humble circumstances in
England, Pamela earned nursing credentials from the University
College Hospital in London. She subsequent.ly earned a master's
degree at the University of California-Berkeley. Later, despite
good intentions to journey to Australia to work on a sheep farm,
she ended up, instead, on an island in the Torres Straits working
with Aborigine families. She has remained a model "servant
leader" in her community and state, inspiring others by her own
example as a volunteer. A tireless advocate for the low income
and homeless populations, and for at-risk children, she can often
be found going out with medical teams to homeless camps, or
helping out at local clinics and multicultural centers. People from
all walks of life admire and appreciate her compassion, her
consistent treatment of all with respect, and willingness to take
action, often using her own personal resources, to help others.
She finds what she does, fun and rewarding, and is always the
first to acknowledge anyone else besides herself. One of her
mottos is "Don't ever underestimate the power of even a small
amount of caring . .. a word of encouragement here and there has
a powerful impact on people." For her invaluable contributions
to the citizens of Utah, and to the Utah System of Higher
Education, Southern Utah University gratefully gives Pamela
Atkinson an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities.

A fter a most successful career with All State Insurance,
W. Boyd Christensen culminated his service with the
company as President and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors.
Boyd also served his government as Assistant Secretary in the
United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
He then returned to Utah to serve his alma mater, Utah State
University, for six years as Vice President for Business and
Finance. AJways community-minded, Boyd has served as
Executive Vice President and member of the Board of the Utah
Symphony and as a member of several other prestigious boards,
including SUU's Board of Fellows. In addition to his professional
and community service, Boyd has served in numerous capacities
with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including
president of the New York, New York mission. Boyd, and his
wife Jean, currently reside in Salt Lake City where they continue
to render service in a variety of community endeavors. The
couple has four children, 18 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren. Boyd maintains his great affinity for SUU. He says
with enthusiasm, "I am very supportive of Southern Utah
University and I want to help lift it just as high as possible." His
warmth, generosity and sincerity are hallmarks of his character
and contribution to so many and so much. For his profound
leadership and service, Southern Utah University is pleased to

Dr. Eugene T. Woolf, fondly regarded to as the
"Conscience of the University," passed away January 3,
2003, at his home in Cedar City after serving a continuous
contract with the University for 50 years. He taught full -time
until 1988, and part-time until 1997. He was among the most
popular members of the faculty; competition to attend his
classes was fierce. He was well-known for his dry wit and
amazing intellect. He was awarded the Outstanding Professor of
the University award three different years. Gene also served as
dean of the School of Arts and Letters from 1967-1979, two
terms as department chair, associate commissioner for academic
affairs of the Utah System of Higher Education from 1982-1985,
and on countless professional boards and committees
throughout the state. Among his many honors and awards is the
Extraordinary lifetime Contribution to the English Profession,
awarded by the Utah Council of Teachers of English. Colonel
Woolf, too, had a distinguished military career as well; one of his
many worthy acknowledgements was receiving the Purple Heart
for wounds sustained while serving in the European Theatre
with the U.S. Army in World War II . At the time of his death
from leukemia, Gene was nearing completion of his fifth book of
his "Great Minds Revisited" series. This volume was to be on
women philosophers and may still be published. In 1997 he
authored "The Odyssey of the Mind: A Voyage of Discovery,"
exploring the ideas and achievements of the men and women
represented in the grand Centurium located near the west
entrance of the Centrum Arena. Gene spent the last 22 years as
the director of SUU's Grace Adams Tanner Center for Human
Values, a position which he held honorably and regarded as a
privilege. In the eulogy at Gene's funeral, SUU President
Emeritus Gerald R. Sherratt said, "Gene revered the idea of a
university ... as one of the highest expressions of society, a place
for nurturing the capacity to think and reason clearly, the ability
to imagine, to reduce problems to their basic elements, and then
place them in the correct perspect.ive." Gene was the
personification of these ideas. Gene, himself, was a great mind.
It is the honor of Southern Utah University to posthumously
bestow on Dr. Eugene Woolf, an Honorary Doctorate of
Humanities.

Renn Zaphiropoulos is a highly-successful businessman,
remarkable community citizen, and wonderful friend to
the University. A pioneer in the development of the electrostatic
writing technique for the production of hard copy, Renn is the
1969 co-founder of Versatec, the world's leading producer of
electrostatic printers and plotters. He also is a retired corporate
vice president of Xerox Corporation, having merged the
company with Versatec in 1975. Throughout his career, he held
several executive positions with Varian Associates, a
manufacturer of analytical instruments and semiconductor
equipment. A scientist, too, Renn has 29 patents and has written
numerous technical papers on a variety of subjects, in addition to
digital imaging printing. He received a bachelor's degree in
engineering physics and a master's degree in physics from Lehigh
University. He also holds an honorary doctorate of engineering
from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and an honorary
doctorate in humanities from Southern Utah University,
awarded in 1990. Renowned for his success in business
leadership, he is currently a member of the board of directors of
five companies. Having a deep affinity for the University, Renn
and his wife Ree, established an endowment at SUU which
provides scholarship assistance to 12 students pursuing studies in
accounting, finance, management and business education. Also
avid livestock caregivers, Renn and Ree are major supporters of
the SUU Rodeo Team, and have established a scholarship to be
awarded to a member of the University's rodeo team. Renn
serves as a member of SUU's Board of Fellows. Also, he is a
frequent lecturer at SUU, and consultant on the subject of
"Cultivating Elegance and Entrepreneurial Leadership." He has
enlightened audiences on this same subject at Harvard Business
School, Columbia University and Stanford University as well. lln
his leisure time, Renn enjoys sailboat racing, gourmet cooking,
painting, music, philosophy and woodworking. His variety of
interests and talents- from business, to horses, to elegance and
more-have certainly been to the benefit of Cedar City and SUU.
Southern Utah University is both pleased and honored to
bestow upon Renn Zaphiropoulos, an Honorary Doctorate of
Business.

THE MACE The mace of Southern Utah University was sculpted by Carol Ann Lind,
granddaughter of J. Howard Maughn, president of our University from 1922-29
then-known as Branch Agricultural College. Used as an instrument of pomp in the
commencement ceremony, the mace signifies order and authority in the academic
possession, and is carried at an angle of 45-degrees across the chest. Traditiona.lly,
the honor of carrying the mace is bestowed upon a distinguished, senior member
of faculty. This year's Marshal is W ayne Hinton, professor of history in the social
sciences department. Wayne received a master's degree from Utah State
University, a Ph.D. from Brigham Young University, and a Post-doctorate from
University of California at Davis. He has been teaching here since I 968.

Derek Snow, professor of management and marketing, is a stalwart, loyal and
dedicated professional who takes his teaching and service seriously, and who
motivates his students and peers as much by his dynamism and energy as he does by
his excellent teaching techniques. A Professional in Residence, Derek was welcomed to
campus because of his ability to build program enrollment through his teaching skills. In
the business world, he produced numerous business loan packages that totaled more
than $10 million. He restructured previously rejected loan proposals, resulting in more
than $3 million in funding, and all three companies are currently exceeding projections.
He was praised by the national director of the Small Business Administration as one of
the most effective Small Business Directors in the country. Students continually
comment that Professor Snow has positively influenced their career choices and
potential. In addition to all this, he regularly engages in scholarly activity, authoring
papers and presentations for elite academic publications and conferences. Derek holds
a master's degree from Brigham Young University in marketing and international
business, before which he scored in the top five percent on the GMAT entrance exam.
Derek's strength as a teacher is accentuated by his actual practical application of
business principles. His style, intellect, talent and dedication make him an effective
teacher with great magnitude and an invaluable contributor to the Institution.

In his five years at SUU, Dr. David Christensen has done much to solidify the
reputation and high-caliber of the School of Busine.ss, and especially the accounting
program. Nearly I 00 percent of SUU's master accounting graduates enter lucrative
jobs in areas like taxation, auditing and controllership, immediately upon graduation.
Our students have become partners in firms. Indeed, SUU is a well-known higher
education institution in the halls of accounting firms rated in the nation's Top 5
category, largely due to David's coordinating and supervising of, and contributions to
the program. With an average score in the 80th percentile on the national field exam,
SUU students are known and regarded by the Top 5 as extremely well prepared job
candidates. "The firms always want more of our graduates," Christensen exclaims.
"SUU accounting graduates are sought after." One of the reasons why the
undergraduate and graduate accounting programs are so strong is because its faculty
hold so much practical application, and scholarly experience. David is a leader in this
area. Last year alone, he was the lead author of three papers of significant research
scope that were published in three different authoritative journals. His sought-after
knowledge is, of course, most beneficial to students. In his teaching, David
demonstrates a high regard for practical application and shows diversity in exposing
students to the several topics within the field. Highly-respected on campus, David is
routinely requested to serve on significant University committees dealing with
integral programs like accreditation, strategic planning and faculty impact issues.

At this point, it might be an understatement to say Dr. Helen Chuang is the epitome of a
distinguished educator. Nearly every year, Helen is nominated by students and colleagues as
the Thunderbird Professor of the Year. She was a finalist last year and the winner this year! Last
year, her peers bestowed on her the grand honor of Outstanding Scholar, and again this year, her
achievements and impact are so strong that they simply could not go unrecognized on a high level.
All of her student evaluations score in the 90th-99th percentile. Students appreciate how Helen
show interests in them as individuals, is respectful of their ideas, is well-organized, articulate and
demonstrates mastery of her subject. She mentors select students each year in research projects
combining fieldwork with cutting-edge biotechnology. Helen devotes a considerable amount of time
advising and serving students in organizations and on committees. Her colleagues respect her input
deeply, as she has been asked to serve on six different search committees, and important University
committees dealing with accreditation, faculty development and administrative advisory bodies. A
teacher-scholar, Helen wants to become the best she can be, and to do that, she remains committed
to her students, colleagues and field with enthusiasm, an endearing personality and sincerity.
Dr. Marty Larkin, associate professor of mathematics, has taught the subject at SUU for 14 years,
but this last year has been particularly exemplary. The math education program Marty is
responsible for (she wrote the entire program review) was accredited by the profession's
authoritative accreditation agency. Provost Harraf said of the event: "Moving SUU's Professional
Education Unit to full accreditation was one of our Institution's major goals this academic year."
Marty received a grant for $I 0,000 from the Utah State O ffice of Education to support classes offered
specifically for in-service teachers. Marty acts on state and national committees and is known widely as
an excellent mathematics educator. The Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics awarded her the
"Don Clark Award for Lifetime Contributions to Mathematics Education." Marty, of course, is just as
influential in the classroom. One student's evaluation is typical of most: "Dr. Larkin took time to see
that her students not only understood concepts , but could convey them to others ... She taught us
how to break the cycle (of hating math) and get (students) to love math or at least understand it. She
taught us that having a positive attitude about math could change everything. And indeed it did."
Matthew Schmidt is an Assistant Professor of Nutrition in the Family and Consumer Sciences
Division of the Applied Science Department in the new School of Applied Science and
Technology. He is in his second year of teaching SUU students. But this is not the foundation of his
relationship with SUU; Matthew is a Thunderbird alumnus, having graduated summa cum laude in
1998 with a degree in biology. He holds a master's degree from the University of Utah in nutrition
science. Student evaluations of Matthew's role as a teacher are consistently in the 90th-99th
percentile range. Students acknowledge repeatedly that Matthew makes them feel valued and
respected. He expects them to stretch themselves into new frontiers of achievement, yet he never
abandons them in their exploration of the complexities of nutrition and its application to the
improvement of the human condition. Matthew inspires learning and honed skills with his own
mastery of the subject and the classroom. Matthew makes a valuable contribution to the campus, as
both co-workers and students respond to his sincerity, thoughtfulness and ethic. He takes all of his
endeavors very seriously, but not at the expense of a good sense of humor and a style of human
interaction that is engaging. His colleagues say of him, "Matt is more than just an emerging young
scholar ... he has arrived!"
OUTSTANDING FEMALE STAFF MEMBER
Jean Huntsman has been with the University for 27 years, serving in the controller's
office. She is SUU's Accounts Payable Supervisor. She is one of those people who
always goes to extra measure to make sure her co-workers have what they need,
giving special attention to the Student Association. The nature of her job oftentimes
presents last minute requests and difficult situations, (and a lot of numbers
challenged people), yet jean conducts herself professionally and courteously at all
times, completing tasks most efficiently. She has a very heavy workload, but is
always willing to take on new, necessary tasks to help the University run more
smoothly. Jean hires and trains student interns and employees, helping them bolster
their resume and be more marketable upon graduation. She is a supporter who is
effective because of her cheerfulness, patience and strong work ethic. She has
served on the Staff Association Board, the Activities Committee and is always
present at campus beautifying events. Regarded as a great example of dedication and
loyalty by all , one co-worker in particular wrote about Jean: "I believe the entire
University is a better place to be because of her support of the entire campus
community."
OUTSTANDING MALE STAFF MEMBER
'Matt Zufelt
If there is one thing that can unnerve a person fast, it's computer problems. When
a computer challenge flares, people react, and stress. It's common everywhere,
but less so on the SUU campus, thanks to Matt Zufelt, network system
administrator. There are three things people want, immediately, when they' re
having computer meltdowns: I) they need someone who knows what to do, 2)
they want that person to respond to their needs instantly, and 3) they don't want to
be left feeling like they are stupid. Matt fulfills each of these desires, with class. In his
six years on campus as a professional, (and probably before that, when he was an
SUU student) Matt has appeased, comforted, impressed, supported, and saved
hundreds of his co-workers across campus. He's not in his office very often because
he is always somewhere on campus coming to someone's rescue. Yet somehow,
(and his coworkers marvel at this one) he returns messages right away, and comes
at a moment's notice. Comprehensively knowledgeable about his job, he oftentimes
suggests or provides equipment he knows a person could use to do their job better,
without even being asked for it. Many departments admit that technology integration
would be next to impossible without Matt. Finally, one SUU employee put it best,
"Matt is willing and able to help you and not make you look like an idiot!" Honest,
dedicated and friendly, the level of service Matt provides is far above the simple call
of duty.

1 n the spring of 1897 , the Utah Legislature authorized a branch of the state's teacher training school to
be located in Southern Utah. Cedar City was notified in late May that
it had been chosen as the site and for the next three months the citizens labored to complete the Ward Hall and make it
ready for the first school year. In September, the school opened its doors.
School had been in session for only two months, however, when the Attorney General ruled that Cedar City's use of the
Ward Hall did not comply with the provision of the law which required that the school have its own building on land deeded to the state for that purpose. Furthermore, the Attorney General stated
that if a building was not erected by the following September, the school would
be lost. The people of Cedar City set out to do the impossible. Nobody, they argued,
was going to take their school away from them, not even if it meant bucking the mountain snows to get the lumber to construct the new building, which, of
course, it did. On January 5, 1898, a group of men, the first of a long line of townsmen to
face the bitter winter weather of the mountains, left Cedar City. Their task was to cut logs necessary to supply the wood for the new building. They waded through snow that often was shoulder deep, pushing and tramping their way up
the mountains, sleeping in holes scraped out of the snow and covered with mattresses of hay. It took them four days just to reach the sawmills, located near
the present day ski resort, Brian Head. Once they got there they realized they had to go back to Cedar City again. The wagons they brought with them could not carry logs through the heavy snows, and it was determined that sleighs were
needed to do the task. The way back was just as arduous as the trip up. The snow had obliterated the
trail they had originally blazed and the snow was even deeper. The wagons could not make it and were abandoned at a clearing. It was in this phase of their march that an old sorrel horse proved so valuable. Placed out at the front of the party,
the horse, strong and quiet, would walk steadily into the drifts, pushing and straining against the snow, throwing himself into the drifts again and again until
they gave way. Then he would pause for a rest, sitt.ing down on his haunches the way a dog does, heave a big sigh, then get up and start all over again. "Old Sorrel" was credited with being the savior of the expedition.
From January through July they kept up their labors and when September 1898 arrived, the building was almost completed. It had a large chapel for
religious programs and assemblies, a library and reading room, a natural history museum, biological and physical laboratories, classrooms, and offices.
There has probably never been a more romantic founding of any school in
America. The first building was literally torn from icy crags and molded by the hands of more than a hundred men and women. Cedar City had met its greatest
test, and Southern Utah University was given a heritage that few educational institutions possess.
