SOMC and Lucasville Historical Society Preserve a Piece of History

Southern Ohio Medical Center will soon be

a part of preserving Lucasville’s history.

SOMC has acquired a historical house located at 94

Scioto Street in Lucasville. To some this might just be an

address, but it is an address that was built with logs that

have held much of Lucasville’s history. History that will

live on for many years to come as SOMC acquires the

lot to improve access to services at the Lucasville SOMC

LIFE Center. The first priority, however, is to harvest the

hand-hewn logs that hold the structure of the building.

“I am actually a graduate of Valley High School and an

employee at SOMC, so being a part of this means even

more to me,” said Craig Gilliland, SOMC’s Administrative

Director of Financial Services and Business Development.

Pat Smith of the Lucasville Historical Society,

shared the history of the cabin on Scioto Street

and its importance to the community.

A man by the name of “John Lucas came to

Ohio with his parents around 1800, when

he was 12 years old,” Smith said.

His father bought acreage north of Portsmouth, but

passed away a few years later in 1814 and willed 376

acres of land to John, Pat explained. John married

and built a cabin on a lot, now known as 94 Scioto

Street. A few years later, on Aug. 7, 1819, Lucasville

was founded and named after the Lucas family.

John is now buried in Lucasville Cemetery along with

his parents, William and Susannah Lucas. Just as their

legacy lives on in the community, so will the logs that

withstood memories of the founding family of Lucasville.

The logs might not stand in the same place, but SOMC

and the Lucasville Historical Society are committed to

ensuring its history lives on by preserving the logs.

Pat also explained how this historical moment

of harvest in Lucasville’s history falls close to

the bicentennial celebration of the town.

“We are currently working on activities for

our bicentennial next year for the weekend

of June 28, 29 and 30,” Smith said.

A cemetery tour, a parade, quilt show, community

worship service and picnic are already planned for the

celebratory weekend, which is also the same weekend

as the Valley Alumni Banquet. On Aug. 7, 2019, a special

birthday will take place at a location to be determined

to continue the celebration of the monumental year.

SOMC is excited to be a part of this historical moment

and to assist in the preservation of a special place in

Lucasville. As for the logs that will be harvested, Smith

shares they aren’t exactly sure where the timbers will

go just yet, but are excited to have multiple ideas on

where they would like to preserve them. They intend to

preserve them in a way where the community will always

be connected to such a huge part of their town’s history.

Financial Wellness class to be held on Wednesday, June 13th.

Brian Lake, from Fifth Third Bank, will be presenting 30 minute sessions at SOMC on Retirement Planning. We all look forward to a healthy retirement at some point in our lives, but a financially secure retirement takes planning no matter what your income level and life circumstances are. Brian Lake will offer some important tips to guide you as you think about this most important phase of your life. What is Financial Wellness Education? We often translate wellness in terms of physical health, however a very important aspect of overall health is Financial Wellness. Financial Wellness does not necessarily mean that we have accumulated lots of money, which may be true for some, but more importantly it refers to the state in which we feel about our financial success or wellbeing. Are we paying all our bills? Are we saving any money? Do we constantly need to take loans to catch up? While many people relate financial wellness to how much money we make, or the lack thereof, it is more about how we choose to spend what we make. Financial Wellness education deals with subjects such as Budgeting, Saving Money and Investing, Boosting Your Credit Score, Slashing Your Debt, Estate Planning, Insurance, and even Home Financing and Equity Loans. Brian will be here on Wednesday as follows: Wednesday, June 13th 10:00 AM Braunlin Lower Level Room A 12:30 PM Braunlin Lower Level Room A 3:00 PM Braunlin Lower Level Room A All sessions are free and open to everyone including family members! Hope to see you there!

Sometimes we all just need a day out.

Thanks to the Social Work and Healthcare Alliance of Scioto County, seniors around the area had the opportunity to do just that at the 2018 Senior Day Out at the SOMC Friends Community Center.

SOMC’s Susan Goins, who is president of the club, said this year’s event had a great turnout. Almost 1,200 seniors came out to enjoy the day’s festivities.

This year marked the fifth year of the fun event. During the past five years, the event has grown so much that it outgrew the Scioto County Welcome Center after the first three years of being hosted there. Since outgrowing the Welcome Center, the event has been hosted at the SOMC Friends Community Center the past two years.

“We wanted to create a fun-filled day for seniors around the community to come out and enjoy,” Susan said.

They created the event all free of charge for seniors. A total of 43 healthcare vendors attended the event, the most vendors they have ever had participate. Each vendor brought food and drink donations to add to contributions from the club and Community Action. With all the donations, the seniors enjoyed quite a spread during their day out.

“The SOMC Grounds and Garden crew also came and made popcorn for the guests, which is always a hit,” Susan said.

Many had the chance to score big at the event as all the vendors brought a $25 prize.

Along with the door prizes drawn at random, prizes were given to some very special guests. Each year, the longest married couple, oldest male and oldest female are all awarded a door prize. The volunteer of the year is also announced at the event and granted a prize. This year’s winner, Pat, is also an SOMC volunteer.

“Pat has volunteered all five years of the event,” Susan said. “She is wonderful and a great help.”

Fun. Food. Friends. What more could you ask for on a day out?

A special thank you to all who made the event possible!
