JAGS SETTO STANDUNITED.

The lingering effects of a second consecutive losing campaign under head coach Stump Mitchell have all but faded away thanks largely in part to a 2012 Jaguars squad deep on experience and hungry to complete the transformation of returning Southern University football to its rightful place among the SWAC’s elite programs.

Despite a 4-7 record last season, vast improvements were plentiful for the 2011 squad, evident by the Jaguars losing four games by 13 points. But in 2012, the Jaguars will take aim at resurrecting this storied program with help from several key additions in the coaching ranks and high school recruits.

With the recent news from the NCAA regarding the lifting of the postseason ban, Mitchell and the Jaguars have their sights set squarely on finishing the 2012 season hoisting the SWAC Championship trophy in Birmingham.

THE OFFENSE Mitchell is joined by several new faces

in his coaching staff including Myron Jackson (defensive line) and Thaddeus Washington (linebackers) and Marty Biagi (special teams). Elvis Joseph (running backs) and Paul Lounsberry (offensive line) return for their third season at Southern, while Jorge Baez (wide receivers) and Chad Germany (quarterbacks) enter their second seasons.

Dawson Odums takes over as the Jaguars defensive coordinator after last

year’s stint as the defensive line coach. QUARTERBACKFor much of the 2011 season,

Southern utilized a two-man rotation at the quarterback position. In 2012, Dray Joseph enters the season as the starting quarterback in his junior season. Joseph passed for 1544 yards and 13 TDs playing in 10 games. Joseph’s performance in a 21-6 victory over Alabama State in the home opener A.W. Mumford Stadium earned him SWAC Player of the Week honors in week two after a 300-yard effort against the Bulldogs. Sophomore J.P. Douglass, a Roswell High product will serve as the Jaguars primary backup. Douglass also threw for over 1000 yards (1282) and 10 TDs in 20110.

RUNNING BACKS/FULLBACKRedshirt junior Sylvester Nzekwe

returns as the Jaguars leading rusher from a year ago, rushing for 545 yards and 3 TDs. Brian McCain, a 6-0, 250 pound junior, returns as the starting fullback with sophomore Lee Mitchell returning from an shoulder injury that kept him sideline the entire season.

WIDE RECEIVER/TIGHT ENDThe Jaguars will look to redshirt

senior Charles Hawkins to add some explosiveness to the offense and to the return game. Senior Michael Berry, who lead the Jaguars with 7 TD receptions, returns as the teams leading receiver after posting 508 yards. The Jaguars will also add the services of junior Rashaun Allen at tight end after missing 2011 due to academics

OFFENSIVE LINEEasily the most experienced unit on the

Jaguars, the offensive line returns four starters led by 2010 All-SWAC 2nd teamer Chris Browne. Junior Aaron Hall takes over at center replacing Lee Almanza. Junior Taylon Jones and sophomore Dwayne

Houston, who competed on the Jaguars track and field team, continue their impressive transition to the college game from a year ago.

THE DEFENSE With the departure of defensive

coordinator O’neill Gilbert, Odums will look to simplify the defensive schemes for a Jaguar defense that yielded 375.6 yards per game

DEFENSIVE LINEDT Casey Narcisse and redshirt

sophomore Kadeem Lewis anchor a young but seasoned corps of defensive lineman that accounted for nine of the Jaguars’ 28 sacks. With a trio of young sophomore lineman in Arthur Miley, Jaylen Jordan and Jeffrey Watkins, the Jaguars hope to ignite a much faster group of pass rushers to apply pressure on the SWAC pass-heavy offenses.

LINEBACKERSJunior Anthony Balancier returns and

the New Orleans native is surrounded by a talent group of linebackers. Eastern Arizona transfer Corey Roy’s combination of athleticism and experience will look to replace the void senior Jamie Payton left from a year ago. Payton lead the Jaguars with 93 tackles, including 12 tackles for loss.

SECONDARYJunior Virgil Williams looks to continue

his growth as an impact player in the secondary. In his second season, Williams played in 10 games registering 37 tackles, including 12 pass breakups and 12 pass deflections. Dutchtown product Levi Jackson joins Williams in the secondary as the starting strong and returns as the teams leading tackler from 2011. Jackson recorded 68 total tackles and recovered one fumble.

MITCHELLLyvonia “Stump” Mitchell returns for

his third season as head football coach at Southern University.

Offering more than 20 years of NFL experience, Mitchell has made crafting eager young people into productive, civ-ic-minded men his top priority as leader of the Jaguar program. His commitment to the academic success of the student-athletes under his watch has been evident since the day he accepted the position of head coach.

With academics as his main focus, Mitchell continues his effort to resurrect a storied program marred in sub-par Aca-demic Progress Rate scores and APR pen-alties. Mitchell has helped increase the program’s overall GPA and the number of football athletes with a 3.0 or better GPA.

On the gridiron, Mitchell has compiled a 6-16 record in two seasons at the helm. Despite a 4-7 record in 2011, the Jaguars remained in contention for a SWAC West-ern Division title deep into the season.

In Mitchell’s 2010 debut, he led the Jag-uars to a scintillating 37-27 comeback win over Delaware State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, Fla. Later that sea-son, Mitchell notched his first SWAC win in a 38-20 homecoming win against Mis-sissippi Valley State. The Jaguars finished with a 2-9 record in Mitchell’s inaugural season.

Having built up a substantial NFL cache through his many years of coaching,

Mitchell aided in three former Jaguars – Jordan Miller (Chicago Bear, 2011), La-quinton Evans (Tennessee Titans, 2012) and Jared Green (Carolina Panthers, 2012) - pursuing their dreams and extended their playing careers in the NFL.

Prior to his arrival on “The Bluff,” Mitch-ell served as the running backs coach on the Washington Redskins’ coaching staff in 2008 and 2009, adding a fresh perspec-tive to the Redskins’ talented group of running backs. He arrived at Redskins Park from the Seattle Seahawks, where he had spent the previous nine seasons coaching the running backs.

In each of his first seven seasons in Seattle, Mitchell, a member coached a 1,000-yard rusher (Ricky Watters for two years, Shaun Alexander for five years).

Mitchell joined the Seahawks follow-ing three years as head coach at Morgan State University. He originally joined the MSU staff in 1995 as offensive coordina-tor, earning a promotion to head coach the following year. Under Mitchell’s tu-telage, the Bears boasted a strong rush-ing attack that averaged 148.9 yards per game in 1997.

Mitchell’s coaching career began in 1991, when he served as an assistant coach on the World League of Ameri-can Football’s San Antonio Riders’ staff. He then accepted a position as the head coach at Casa Grande (Ariz.) High School (1991-94), where he led the team to a

playoff berth in his second year.Mitchell played nine years in the NFL

as a standout running back with the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. He was a ninth-round draft choice by the Cardinals in 1981 and would go on to become one of the great running backs and kick returners in Cardinals history.

Mitchell is the Cardinals’ all-time leader in combined yardage with 11,988 yards and ranks second with 4,649 yards rush-ing on 986 attempts and 32 touchdowns. His 177 kickoff returns for 4,007 yards are both franchise records. He posted 14 100-yard games and finished with a 4.7-yard rushing average, second-best in the fran-chise history.

During his collegiate days at the Citadel, Mitchell was the Southern Conference Player of the Year in 1980 and rushed for 1,647 yards in a single season. Mitchell earned third team Associated Press All-American honors his senior year. He holds many of the school’s rushing records to-day including the record as Citadel’s all-time leading rusher with 4,062 yards.

Mitchell is one of only six former Bull-dog football players who have their jersey retired at The Citadel.

Mitchell was honored with the Chuck Drulis Award for community service in 1982 and the Byron “Whizzer” White Humanitarian Award for charity work in 1984. He was born on March 15, 1959, in Kingsland, Ga.
