Okay, the online version of the SEPPA magazine is now in its ninth month and we have some

celebrating to do. Southern Exposure entered the PPA Affiliate Communications competition in

February. We just received word we came in First Place in our category. This is amazing! Our in-

credible writers, contributors and industry sponsors have made this possible. Without their dedication, we would not have this invaluable learning tool!

Thank You!!!

The June issue of Southern Exposure is one for the history books. This month we are celebrating

incredible image making by presenting the all new Court of Honor and Loan Collection

images from the recently held affiliated jugding.

We have given our writers the month off. Well, with one exception, Kevin Newsome has his column

and you will love what he has to say this month. Don’t worry, while the writers are taking a much

needed break, they will be back in July with all new techniques and products to share.

One special page to look at is the all newSPF!!!

It’s finally here, the Southeastern Photographic Fellowship. You can now earn your degee with

SEPPA. Be sure to read all about it.

One final thought for this month,it’s not too early to make your hotel reservation

for the 2011 SEPPA Convention. The space goes quick!

Few Momentsawith...

RAW vs. JPEGPC vs. MAC

Canon vs. Nikon

Major news networks and magazines all have editorial features. SEPPA is lucky to have our very own Kevin Newsome.

Kevin is featured each month as he shares his latest rant. Some topics may hit home, some may be surprisingly poignant. When it’s all said and done, it’s just Kevin’s opinion and he thought he

should share it. We, at Southern Exposure, hope you will enjoy this month’s installment of“A Few Moments With...”. This month, Raw vs. JPEG.

(Click on the title, Raw vs. JPEG, and you will be linked to the video.)

Sam GraySam Gray’s talents as an accomplished artist have spanned four decades. He began his training in the late 60s as a portrait photographer. He has received

over 600 awards both nationally and internationally for his ability to “see light”. Sam Gray has earned the Photographic Craftsman Degree as well as the Master of Photography Degree. He was inducted into the International Photographers’ Hall of Fame in 1989. Among the more recent awards was the prestigious Diamond Photographer of the Year 2007 and 2008 (He was one of six worldwide.) He was awarded Platinum Photographer of the Year

for 2009. He also received the ASP Silver Medallion Award in Masters competition for 2007. In 2008 he received “Best of Show” and First Place

in the Southeast as well as North Carolina. He has been named North Carolina’s Photographer of the Year 2008 and 2009. He was awarded the prestigious Kodak Gallery Award at SEPPA for 2008, 2009, 2010 and the

ASP Elite Award in both 2008 and 2009.

January 2010 he was awarded the Kodak International Elite Award in Nashville, Tennessee.

Among his most distinguished accomplishments has been receiving his ASP Fellowship Degree. He was the 101st artist to attain this degree worldwide.

His insatiable appetite for learning has kept him actively learning new artistic techniques; however, he enjoys working with mixed media best.

Much of his artistic training has been done on various locations in the States and Europe. While traveling he has managed to collect literally thousands of scenic landscapes. Many of his favorites have already been painted and are

available for purchase. Customized art pieces can also be commissioned from his immense art collection.

Sam Gray has clients from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. His ability to communicate well allows him to work with clients of all ages and nationali-ties. He is frequently commissioned to create portraits for both private and

public collections.

“Gatsby Summer Afternoon”

In the Summer of 2007 I was privileged to visit the Dunsmuir Historical Estate in Oakland, California for an elegant afternoon picnic, dance and festivities. I was attending an Impressionistic Workshop with Jeremy Sutton and other artists from around the

country. From the moment we arrived, the surreal experience began. We were driven through the gate and down a long winding

drive onto the estate in a vintage car listening to 1920s music.

Page 11: Southern Exposure June 2010

“Gatsby Summer Afternoon” Note: Images chosen for the cover of Southern Exposure are first place or distinguished award winners from the annual

affiliated judging.

Everyone had dressed the part and I felt as if I were in a time warp or on a Hollywood set. It really was a delightfully strange feeling. All items had to be historically authentic. (No water bottles nor modern packaging was allowed). I was thrilled that we could use our

new cameras! Most of the time I tried to remain as inconspicuous as possible, hoping to capture as many images for use in future art endeavors

without disturbing the mood of the moment. Fortunately, I came away with over a thousand images that day. “Gatsby Summer After-noon” was one that wonderfully embodies the magical essence of that day. The final original is pigment and oil on canvas.

Page 14: Southern Exposure June 2010

The SEPPA Board of Governors, at the annual meeting in Franklin, TN,approved the all new SEPPA Degree Program.

The Southeastern Photographic Fellowshipis now a reality!

You can earn your new SPF Degree in two categories:The orange ribbon represents a concentration in print credits.

The purple ribbon represents a concentration in service to the organzation.Upon completion of the requirements for both concentrations,

a purple and orange ribbon will be awarded.

SEPPA will post the Credit Chart and submission forms at a later date. Be sure to check back. All events, beginning April 1, 2010

will be eligible to submit for credit.

...to earn your degree!

The time has come...

Page 15: Southern Exposure June 2010

The Executive Committee and Board of Governors of the Southeastern Professional Photographers Association are proud to present the 2010 Court of Honor. Judged, accepted for display and sealed by the Professional Photographers of America Print Exhibition Commit-tee, the Court of Honor includes those prints that scored 80 or higher in

the recent affiliated judging in Franklin, Tennessee.

155 images represent 69 makers. It is our desire to recognize these images in this new and exciting way in the hopes of extending the educational opportunities of SEPPA members as they study these exceptional ex-

amples of the best image makers of the Southeastern area of the United States. We hope you not only enjoy viewing these images, but de-

velop a further understanding of the power of print competition and its contribution to the industry.

We are also proud to introduce the Southeastern Photographic Fellow-ship (SPF) degree, approved by the Board of Governors at the Franklin meeting. Modeled after PPA and state honorary degrees, for the first time in its almost 80 year history, SEPPA may now award credits for

voluntary service as well as success in print competition. The following images will receive a SPF credit for Court of Honor. Images which re-

ceived a place or distinguished award, as noted with the title and maker’s name, receive additional credits and comprise the

SEPPA Loan Collection.

We extend our sincere congratulations to those who participate and excel in competition or service to the association, our thanks to those who have

led by example in the past and our encouragement to those who, by viewing this display, are inspired to join the fun.
