NAR/WCR Mid-Year Conference Washington D.C., May 16-19, 2013 Another trip to Mid-Year in Washington, DC and what a trip it was! The conference was full of great classes, speakers, events and new ideas. My favorite speaker was Tami Bonnell, who spoke about being the “Next Generation REALTOR®: The Future of Real Estate and Beyond”. Recently, she was promoted to Exit Realty President. She delivered a power-packed presentation full of excellent ideas. She talked about industry changes, real estate trends & how you should apply those to your business. Never once was I bored and my hand hurt from taking notes. She ROCKED the house! Friday evening, we attended the awards banquet at the Washington Hilton where the Southeast Valley chapter received the gold award for 2012. Way to go, Sasha Lopez and the 2012 board! We showed our unity and AZ spirit by wearing our black feather fascinators to the banquet. And our 2013 SEVRAR President, Doug Adcox (and wife, Suzie-who is our chapter secretary) were able to celebrate with us. Arizona is quickly earning a reputation of “those AZ leaders are not only smart but creative and fun”! The most exciting news is that the National WCR website is now live, and the chapters can start using their own websites that are linked to the national website, too! New national members will be automatically added once they join, events & pictures will be more easily added, and once other chapters start to use their personalized chapter websites we can unite WCR members across the state & country for more referrals and relationships! I am honored to represent the SEV chapter at mid-year and look forward to learning more about leadership & how WCR can “grow” all of us in San Francisco in November 2013! 2013 WCR Mid-Year Report, Shen Yi Michelle Chang, President Elect I am honored to be serving my fourth consecutive year with the WCR and am proud to represent our council as the auditing committee chair since 2010. During this time, I assisted other chapters in reviewing our standing rules and have been able to incorporate essential guidelines that I am confident will both strengthen our own chapter and make us a major player in the field. This year I am the president elect of our chapter, and I am looking forward to continuing to build strong networks with our other chapters and learn from their successes to drive forward our own growth. This has been a great year for innovation and new ideas in our field and I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend several committees and forums that I believe will open up new doors for us in the future. From May 14th to May 19th, I had the pleasure of attending the 2013 Mid-Year WCR and NAR Conference in Washington, D.C. This year, I was appointed by the NAR president to serve as a member of the Housing Opportunity Committee (HOP). We had a great week that provided me with the opportunity to attend various classes, as well as, budget forums and financial committee meetings as a proud liaison for WCR. In addition, I was able to participate in the state and regional caucus. Both of these events served as perfect occasions for sharing ideas with other WCR and AAR Real Estate leaders regarding budgets, financing, and the fundamentals of WCR and NAR initiatives. Through participation in the national finance committee’s round table talks, I gained insight into how we can apply improvements to our budget and take it from the national level to the local level. During my time in Washington, D.C., I was able to sit in on classes offered by the Housing Opportunity Program (HOP), which included courses through Community & Political Affairs (CPA) training. CPA training courses covered both Employer-Assisted Housing (EAH), Expanding Housing Opportunities (EHO), and Smart Growth for the 21st Century. Topics discussed ranged from a comprehensive overview of affordable housing opportunities and the role of realtors in the market, to methods for approaching local employers about discussing the implementation of EAH benefits for their employees. Additionally, HOP continues to focus its efforts on four major areas: (1) supporting and encouraging the development of state and local association EAH initiatives, (2) providing technical assistance and funding support for state and local associations’ workforce housing activities, (3) participating in national and regional housing events convened by industry partners, (4) encouraging state and local realtor associations to organize and coordinate local housing forums with partners in their communities. These classes not only gave participants an opportunity to share new ideas on integral topics, but it also provided us with an occasion for networking with other chapter presidents and promoting our own local chapters. I was able to talk to motivated realtors and work on recruiting new members so we can continue to expand and grow. In addition to attending courses, I am excited to announce two upcoming grant opportunities through HOP that support a variety of initiatives and programs. Since the program was created in 2006, HOP has awarded nearly 250 grants totaling over $800,000. These grants fall into two categories: Level One grants available for up to $1000 for hosting Employer-Assisted Housing (EAH) or Expanding Housing Opportunities (EHO) classes, and Level Two grants available for up to $5000 for long-term initiatives or one-time activities that address a specific housing need in a community or state. Along with this successful trip to Washington, D.C., I also attended our WCR National Board of Directors meetings. At the banquet, we were able to hear inspiring success stories from other leaders all across the country. I am looking forward to implementing these success stories and what I have learned from the opening and closing sessions of these meetings into our own chapter’s continued growth and success. In addition, I hope to continue to employ my own accounting and auditing background in order to benefit our chapter. I am confident that my organizational skills and desire to network for our chapter will benefit WCR in the upcoming year and into the future. It has been a pleasure to learn and grow with all of you. Respectfully, Shen Yi Michelle Chang DA FA Realty & Investments, LLC 1858 E. Southern Ave Tempe, AZ 85282 2013 WCR Mid-Year Report, Althea Baca, Membership Chair WCR Mid-Year Conference exposed me to exponential power of this organization. The ability to meet REALTORS®/Affiliates in one place and to exchange ideas/views was priceless. The classes were a variety so one could best pick the class that would help her/him with their particular chapter needs. The instructors were professionals in their field and given the time, provided the participants with information one could bring back to their chapter and apply. Enjoyed the “App Class” immensely, we should consider bring Juanita McDowell to one of our BRM’s.

I believe for future conferences we need to promote how all WCR members could benefit by attending and in this way, show potential leaders what WCR is, the power of this organization and how they can benefit by stepping into a leadership role for this energy driven organization. I would like to thank SEVWCR for allowing me this privilege to attend on the chapters behalf. Respectfully Submitted, Althea Ruiz-Baca, 2013 Membership Chair AAR/WCR Spring Convention in Tucson, April 2013 (AAR General Session) Many WCR members attended the AAR conference & ALL SEVWCR officers attended the WCR conference on Thursday (WCR Day) We had some great speakers & learned lots of valuabe stuff! That information has been shared with the board and we are excited to implement some of the ideas this year. Several of the local chapters & AZ state chapter also sponsored a PMN class which was taught by JoAnn Fossland (WCR member) & well attended, including Marci Slater & Hilary Sosey (Lake Havasu President). Scholarships received from attending this conference: Karen Kay, Carolyn Cronin & Marci Slater.

Karen, and all the rest of the SEVRAR group who have contributed in any way to the Clothes Cabin campaign, That was a beautiful, greatly appreciated gift you delivered today. It means so much to have community support for what we're doing, but your support is above and beyond, top shelf, full on participation. You cannot imagine the number of lives you have touched and will touch, and the impact you're making on the lives of the children we clothe. The little ones who will be excited about going to school because they have new clothes ... that's what you need to keep in mind as you think of your donation to CC. It's not for us, it's for the kids. I look at these socks, shirts, and the underwear you bought earlier, and am so touched by your unselfish kindness to people you will never meet. I know you'll be blessed for it and I'm just so happy to be partnering with you in delivering happiness to families in need. Thanks, thanks, thanks - Caryn Shoemaker, President ***Collecting money by “passing the tin” at our meetings & the fashion show has been able to collect enough money to provide lots of socks, underwear, shirts, shorts, etc. so far. We’re collecting “back to school” items through August (shirts, shorts, pants, skirts (size 6 at higher), socks, backpacks, etc.)
