From your Chapter Director
Well, it is January, and time when some make New Years resolutions. What are some of yours? What
would you like to see happen to your chapter this year? Do you have a suggestion for a ride, or a
destination, or maybe, just a new place to eat you think others would enjoy.
Well, for me, I just don’t make the resolutions anymore. Not that I don’t believe in them, but just too many
options and I really don’t know where to start. But January is the month for new beginnings, new starts,
and trying to remember to write the correct year when you put the date. For those of you who still know
what a check is, my biggest concern, writing the correct date on the check. Nothing like making the
check a year old and no good, with one easy stroke of the pen, so it causes me to pause each time, at least
for a couple of months.
So, where is your chapter going this year? The year in review first. This past
year, we had our Annual Chapter Christmas Party/Gathering, a North/South
Potluck Dinner, an Oyster Roast, a Super Bowl Potluck/Game, a Frogmore, a
trip to Jekyll Island, Key West, Spring Mountain Trip and Wing Ding. We had
two maintenance days, where we help you to do the maintenance on your
bike. We hosted a CPR/First Aid Class, along with several Education
Seminars. We had 21 Meet to Eats (had a couple cancelled due to weather),
our first Members Meal where some who had participated and earned points, got their free or discounted
meal. And we had a few rides. This year, we were low on the rides, so we hope to turn that around this
new year.
So far, for 2017, we already are making plans for many things. Of course, the two monthly Meet to Eats,
our North/South Potluck Dinner, an Oyster Roast, the Super Bowl Potluck/Game, a Frogmore, our
Christmas Party, a Spring Mountain Trip, and we are even going to add a couple of new things. Starting
in January, we will start a Last Tuesday Night Dessert Meet. We will publish some place to
meet so we can enjoy their desserts. Our first couple of months will be locations with inside
seating to keep warm, but if there is a good response and it goes into the summer, who
knows… I hear Ice Cream calling!
The District Officers meeting will be in January, and we will learn what visitation program they
are going to put in place. As you know, they stopped the Plaque Capture because some chapters were
unhappy with it. So they are looking to either update the rules, or… go to a new program. When they
decide, we will share that with you and what it means to the chapter. I will say, I would like to see us
riding to visit other chapters more often, so maybe we can forecast that.
So, what things would you like to see revived,
added, or changed? Do you have a favorite
destination? Do you know of an interesting event?
By all means, not all of us grew up in the Tri-
County area, so feel free to share your thoughts.
And here’s wishing you a Happy New Year.
Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be
thankful,
Mike Melton

From Your Assistant Chapter Director
I find myself writing this in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. We
all enjoy the time we spend with friends and family in this special time of year. It's also a time to
reflect and take stock of what we did for others in the last 12 months.
We, as Chapter G members, are very fortunate in that we seem to have the resources and
financial ability to do most whatever we would like. GWRRA is not based on being a charitable
organization, but as human beings, it can make you feel great to help someone else.
There are plenty of opportunities to help with so many worthy causes in our area and
nationally. Recently, our state and its people has received assistance by the Red Cross, local
food banks, Toys for Tots, local churches and many more smaller organizations. Our
involvement need not always have to be a monetary gift, it can be hours given to a food bank,
gifts made for nursing home residents, hospital patients, veterans, battered women’s shelters
or even giving blood. These donations or helping hands do not need to be large in value, they
just need to be a hand up.
I'd like for us to come together to "give back" this coming year. This is a well-worn term,
but so many people are in need in so many ways. We, as a group, should be able to come
together to help our community in some small way. We can't do everything, but should be
willing to commit to do something. Let’s make 2017 a more meaningful year!
And “Thank You !” in advance of any support you can offer.

Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider
Choices(TM) Contract For Safety
I appreciate that my family and friends may be concerned about my safety now
that I have chosen to ride a motorcycle. I also understand that my choices can
affect those who care about me, especially if I am injured in a motorcycle crash. I
agree that motorcycling, like many activities involving vehicles and motion,
involves some degree of risk, and I hereby commit to riding safely and minimizing
my risk.
By initialing each of the following statements, I agree to:
___ Be Aware of the Risks Associated with Motorcycling – I understand that safe motorcycling
requires dedicated attention to the immediate task and a keen awareness of everything going
on 360 degrees around me. I also understand that motorcycles lack the crash protection of cars,
and since motorcycles are smaller and narrower than cars, car drivers may not see me and may
cut me off or squeeze into my lane without warning.
___ Get Trained and Licensed – I will take at least one MSF RiderCourse® to learn the proper
mental strategies and riding skills in a controlled environment, under the guidance of
professional MSF-certified RiderCoaches, before riding on the street. I will get a motorcycle
license or endorsement and obtain proper insurance for my motorcycle, to demonstrate that I
am a responsible individual.
___ Wear Protective Gear – I will always choose to wear proper protective riding gear when I
ride; most importantly a DOT-compliant helmet, plus eye protection, gloves, over-the-ankle
boots, jacket and pants, regardless of my destination or the duration of my ride.
___ Select an Appropriate Motorcycle – I will only ride a motorcycle that fits my physical
characteristics and is otherwise right for me. I will become familiar with its controls, power
delivery, braking, and handling characteristics by studying the owner's manual and practicing
on lightly traveled streets before venturing onto busy streets or highways.
___ Use a Safe-Riding Strategy – I will maintain awareness of the traffic environment and my
position within it by using safe-riding strategies such as SEE – Search, Evaluate, Execute – and a
2-second minimum following distance. I will communicate with other motorists by always using
my turn signals and a head-check when turning or changing lanes, and will make a mental note
of possible escape routes in case my path is blocked.

843-847-1444
___ Ride Within My Limits – I will not ride faster or longer than my abilities allow, nor will I ride
aggressively or make risky maneuvers. Riding too fast in corners is a primary cause of single-
vehicle crashes. I will honestly assess my own physical capabilities and mental attitude before
each ride since both aspects are required to safely navigate my motorcycle on the street.
___ Ride Unimpaired – I will never use alcohol or drugs when riding. I understand that
motorcycling is a serious activity that requires intense focus, keen perception, split-second
decision-making, physical coordination, and a fine sense of balance, and that alcohol and drugs
weaken those abilities. In fact, almost half of all motorcyclists killed in crashes were using
alcohol.
___ Keep my Motorcycle in Excellent Operating Condition – I will follow the recommended
maintenance schedule as outlined in the owner's manual, will ensure repairs are made
promptly, and will pay particular attention to the tires, since inflation pressure and overall
condition affect the critical grip between my motorcycle and the road surface.
___ Be a Lifelong Learner – I will return periodically for a variety of refresher rider training
courses to brush up on my skills and knowledge, because the positive effects gained from a
training course do not last forever.
To summarize, I acknowledge that if I ride untrained, recklessly, or without the protection of
motorcycle-specific safety apparel, I am at increased risk of a life-altering injury or death. This
would not only affect me but could affect my family and friends. Therefore, I am committed to
being a safe and responsible motorcyclist.

Motorist Awareness
I just saw a video of a driver’s windshield being shattered by a large piece of ice
blowing off the top of a truck. It emphasized just how unexpectedly something
can happen when you’re on the road … no matter WHAT you ride or drive.
I don’t know if many of you have experienced this type of hazard, but I have. You
don’t have to go very far to find it. As the winter months turn colder, our friends to
the not too distant north often see snowy and icy conditions. As they travel south,
the ice and snow on their vehicles melts and becomes a hazard to other motorists.
While most of us won’t experience blowing ice hazards, we all can expect the
unexpected every time we take the bike out. The colder winter months present
hazards we don’t usually encounter. We could very well experience ice in the
mornings. In our areas, these patches of ice may not present much of a hazard to
the motoring public, but for us they can be quite treacherous. We have to be
extra vigilant and take precautions a motorist may not have to take and probably
doesn’t expect us to take.
To keep ourselves safe in these conditions, we probably need to keep a greater
distance from other vehicles around us. If a vehicle is following a little too closely,
communicate to them to fall back a
bit. If they fail to do that, allow
them to move around you. Be
extra vigilant with your
“S.E.E.” (Scan … Evaluate …
Execute) and communicate with
other drivers as much as possible.
Always … Ride Alert … Ride

Parade. We started
the gathering at
1:30 PM with a short
meeting and Mike reviewed the events of the
past year. We had
34 members in
attendance and all
participated in the
Wright Family
story (read by
Mike) and gift
exchange. Lots of
laughs as usual. Holiday wishes were also
exchanged and all left in the
holiday spirit! Plan now to
join us for next year’s party,
we hope to add a few
surprises next year.
Meet to Eats
We had two Meet to Eats again this month. The
first one was on Dec. 8th at the Northwoods
Mall food court. The second one was on the
22nd and was held at La Hacienda Restaurant
in North Charleston, 022712. We hope to see
you at one of our meet to eats next month. Do
you have a suggestion for a location to hold a
Meet to Eat? If so, please send an email to:
Mikey’s Rides
Well, don’t know what to tell you. December is
such a hectic month. Everyone is busy. And
the weather is unpredictable from day to day.
We are looking to add more rides in 2017.
Look for short notice rides to come up.
Christmas Parades
Hanahan: held on Saturday, Dec 3rd
Nine bikes/trikes and trailers participated in
this well attended parade. Seemed like it was
a longer route this year. Lots of kids looking
for candy being thrown to them.
Edisto: held on Saturday, Dec 10th. Seven
bikes/trikes and trailers participated in this
parade. Not as well attended, but the locals
were VERY appreciative of our support,
especially after the devastation suffered from
Hurricane Andrew. Got to do some “razzle,
dazzle” and we finally won First Place!
Summerville: held on Saturday, Dec 11th
Ten bikes/trikes and trailers participated in
this parade, attended by thousands of
onlookers. This was our first time in many
years and we will definitely participate again
next year. Great Motorist Awareness event for
our Chapter.
Chapter Rides
The Santee Canal Christmas Lights Ride was
rescheduled for Saturday, December 17th.
We met for dinner at El
Maguey for dinner in Moncks
Corner before going out to see
the lights. Very busy as it was
the last weekend for the lights,
vendors and attractions this
year.
We also participated among
the 168
bikes
in
Wreaths Across America
where over 8,600 wreaths
were placed on the
graves of our fallen
military at the
Beaufort
National
Cemetery.

them tightly toward the middle.
7. Wrap in cling film and chill for about
30 minutes.
8. Remove the cling film and push one

The winter solstice has passed and now the days start to get longer. Only problem is, this is
the coldest part of the year coming up. If you are riding, be sure to wear layers, and take
layers. You never know what the temperature is going to do. And now is the season to start
watching for the black ice.
