EARACHES/Otitis Media Otitis Media means inflammation of the middle ear as a result of a middle ear infection. It can occur in one or both ears. It is the most frequent diagnosis recorded for children who visit physicians for illness. It is also the most com-mon cause of hearing loss in children. It occasionally affects adults and oc-curs most commonly during the winter and early spring. IS IT SERIOUS? YES, because of the severe earache and hearing loss it can cause. Hearing loss, especially in children, may impair learning capacity and even delay speech development. However, if treated promptly and effectively, hearing can almost always be restored to normal. Otitis media is also serious because the infection can spread to nearby struc-tures in the head, especially the mastoid. This, it is very important to recognize the symptoms and get immediate attention from a Dr. WHAT CAUSES OTITIS MEDIA? Blockage of the Eustachian tube during a cold, allergy, or upper respiratory infection, and the presence of bacteria or viruses lead to the accumulation of fluid behind the eardrum. This infection is called Acute Otitis Media. The build-up of pressurized pus in the middle ear causes pain, swelling and redness and can cause the eardrum to rupture! Un-fortunately, after the acute infection passes with treatment, the effusion re-mains and becomes chronic, lasting for weeks, months, or even years. SYMPTOMS: Pulling, scratching at the ear, crying, irritability , fever, vomiting, ear drainage, feeling of fullness or pressure, dizziness, loss of balance. REMEMBER, without proper treatment, damage from an ear infection can
cause chronic or permanent hearing loss.

Next AfterProm
meeting will be March
10th @ 6pm in the commons area. We will be discussing letters we will be mailing to each Junior/Senior parent the middle of March updat-ing them of rules & regula-tions and inform parents about AfterProm what we do and what AfterProm is all about. We will have a detach-able form with the letter for an update for the parent's contact information. Thanks to all the parents that helped plan, organize and work at our January 25th & 26th AfterProm Fundraising Basketball Tour-nament. It was a successful event. And another thank you to the parents that worked our last concession on Saturday, Feb-ruary 15th
Nutrition Basics Wellness Notes from the Kitchen!
March, will it “come in like a Lion”-sounds like it maybe will?! Then hopefully it will truly “go out like a Lamb!” After this long cold winter, we are all anxiously waiting for the first signs of spring!! And, you know, I have seen a few signs—not outside, but in the grocery store!! Strawberries are starting to arrive and look great. The asparagus is looking fresh and tasty! As spring and summer get near, watch for produce to get fresher and more affordable. Right now, oranges and citrus fruits are still the best! Take full advantage of the seasonal items as they appear!! With the great system of transportation bringing in items from warmer growing locations, we have most items year round, but there are “seasons” when things are at their “peek”. Berries and greens are the first! Then as summer fruits arrive, be patient! Melons, for instance, need some good old Hot weather to make them sweet and juicy. June through August they are best, especially for locally grown ones! The first peaches are often a disappointment, dry and blah! Southern peaches get good in June and Colorado peaches are wonderful in August. Pears and plums are also at their peek in August and September. As for vegetables, greens and things like tomatoes, green beans, and new potatoes, they are the very best if you have the opportunity to grow a garden! A friend of mine told me she planted lettuce, radishes and was planning on putting out onion and broccoli sets this week!! She will be the first to enjoy the wonderful side of spring-things that grow even in the cold!! Even if you don’t have a big plot, work up a spot by the back fence, or plant some tomato plants in a big pot outside your back door!! Not yet, wait until about May, frost-free date for ten-der plants is about May 5-10 in our area. The joy of growing your own pro-duce is a great family experience and it tastes even better! So start now, even when I’d rather be sitting by the fire, work up some ground to mellow for a month or so, then experiment with your green thumb. Spring really will come sometime soon!!!
