Southborough Historical Material Archive Project at the Southborough Historical Society – Inventory Prepared by Adam Brooks, Southborough Library Archivist Completed – June 17, 2017 The photograph and paper collections of the Southborough Historical Society are extensive and provide an excellent resource for those interested in the history of Southborough, Massachusetts. While there are many gaps in the collection this document will provide researchers, SHS staff and volunteers with an overview of what may be found in the collection and a guide to find and access the material. Volume: The collection consists of 40 boxes and 15 flat file drawers; 65 linear feet of photographs and documents. Provenance: The photograph and paper collections of the Southborough Historical Society, founded in 1965, has been developed through generous gifts from scores of donors. This collection not only represents documentation of the shared history of the people of Southborough but also represents the generosity and civic pride of many of those who have called Southborough home. Conservation: The material was placed in acid-free folders and boxes. Oversized items were allowed to lay flat either in large archival boxes or a flat file. Many items were lightly surface cleaned as needed and metal fasteners were removed. Fragile and valuable items were placed in mylar polyester sleeves or in some cases interleaved with acid-free bond paper. Historical Background The Southborough Historical Society was chartered in 1965. The collections and society meetings were held in the Community House until 2000 when the society dedicated a new museum, the Southborough Historical Museum in the 1860 Flagg School building. In 2016 a flood, declining membership and financial resources inspired certain members of the community and the Southborough Library to work towards saving Southborough’s material culture and documented history. The result is a reinvigorated historical society and a collection better preserved and more accessible to the public than ever before.

Southborough Historical Material Archive Project at the Southborough Historical Society – Inventory

Prepared by Adam Brooks, Southborough Library Archivist

Completed – June 17, 2017

The photograph and paper collections of the Southborough Historical Society are extensive and provide an excellent resource for those interested in the history of Southborough, Massachusetts. While there are many gaps in the collection this document will provide researchers, SHS staff and volunteers with an overview of what may be found in the collection and a guide to find and access the material. Volume: The collection consists of 40 boxes and 15 flat file drawers; 65 linear

feet of photographs and documents. Provenance: The photograph and paper collections of the Southborough Historical

Society, founded in 1965, has been developed through generous gifts from scores of donors. This collection not only represents documentation of the shared history of the people of Southborough but also represents the generosity and civic pride of many of those who have called Southborough home.

Conservation: The material was placed in acid-free folders and boxes. Oversized

items were allowed to lay flat either in large archival boxes or a flat file. Many items were lightly surface cleaned as needed and metal fasteners were removed. Fragile and valuable items were placed in mylar polyester sleeves or in some cases interleaved with acid-free bond paper.

Historical Background

The Southborough Historical Society was chartered in 1965.

Scope and Content

The paper collections of the Southborough Historical Society may be divided into two broad groups, the photograph collection and the document collection. The photograph collection is further broken down into the historic photograph collection, numbering roughly 1200 prints and 150 negatives and The Villager newspaper photograph collection, numbering 2582 prints. The document collection consists of original source manuscripts and papers as well as research subject files. In many cases original documents are comingled with research notes, print outs, etc. The basic organization of the subject files was often maintained but improved with archival materials and improved file naming systems. The subject files also often have photographs included in them. These were left alone and are not included in the number count of the photograph collection.
