Keep safe and well. See you all Wednesday.

Hello to you all and welcome to this very busy Newsletter, there has been so many events that you all have attended over the past couple of months, hence the amount of brilliant and much appreciated reports I have received. Thank you so much to Robin as always, who has really been beavering away, not only his notes, but four other informative reports on all events they have attended. What would we do without you Robin? Thanks also to Fiona for her latest news on the Website, Shutterfly etc. and also a big thank you once again to Ivor for his report on a fantastic day at RAF Coningsby.

Greetings and welcome to our newsletter for October 2018. September turned out to be a very busy month. Members attended the International Autojumble at Beaulieu, Goodwood Revival, New Forest Re-Run, People & Places Run with Tamar Valley MGOC, our Isle of Wight walk and evening meal. Unfortunately, we called off attending the Doughnut Run with Basingstoke MGOC due to an awful forecast and heavy rain although it did clear up later in the day. Reports are included for most of these plus one about the Piddle Puddle Tour from late August, and photos are available on the Shutterfly pages through the link on our webpages. Thank you, Fiona! I note that a year ago we welcomed Jeff & Gill, John and Madeleine and Linda S to our club. They have joined us for various events and activities and we look forward to seeing them over the next year. In the last couple of months, we have been joined by Peter Gee and Phil Thompson who we hope to see in the months ahead. Unfortunately, I will be away (again) for the October monthly meeting but Fiona has offered to look after proceedings. October is busy right through for me, but I will be looking to arrange another breakfast outing and run in November. You don’t need an MG on the road to join us for this. A big thank you and well done to Karen for editing this bumper edition of the newsletter for October. Plenty of news and reports of events and activities. Please remember to let Karen have your write up of whatever you have been up to, MG wise that is, and any experiences you have had with your cars, good or bad. The mid-monthly meeting will be at The Landford Poacher, Landford on Wednesday 17

th October.

Please remember that we have arranged an evening quiz for Wednesday 28

th November at The Sir

Walter Tyrell. I have received names for five teams but please let me know if you wish to join us by the November meeting. Will Jeff & Gill and their ‘brainy team’ be defending their triumph of earlier in the year? Enjoy your outings this month and safe driving.

Robin

Member of the Year 2018

As we approach the autumn period it is that time of year for members to consider who, in their opinion, should be considered for the annual open vote of who is ‘Member of the Year 2018’. There are no criteria to assess; it is a personal reflection with opportunity being provided to all members to vote, but primarily your vote should take account of someone who has made a significant contribution to the club over the year. A voting slip is attached after the Contacts section, so you can remove from the newsletter, make your nomination, and hand to the Club Secretary, or email, by mid-monthly November please. The presentation will be made at the Christmas Dinner on 15

th December.

New Forest Run 2019 – First meeting!!!! The upper function room at The Empress of Blandings is booked for Wednesday 10

th October from 1930.

The meeting will start at 2000. An agenda has been issued last month and is available on the Members web page of our website.

I will be putting a series of new banners up on the web site over the next few weeks following the New Forest Re-Run and Tamar Valley MGOC Run however, if you are out and about please don’t forget to submit a photo for the banner, or the front page of our site, to [email protected] Shutterfly gallery is available for everyone to view following each event. There are links within the ‘PHOTO LINKS 2018’ page on the web site. I am inserting other pages into the site, firstly the New Forest Run 2019 – at present blank but hopefully after our meeting next week some initial information will be available. Any other pages you may find useful, let me know and I will get them set up. Perhaps the right time of year to collate some useful technical information from member’s knowledge.

Thank you for all the kind messages following my article in the August 2018 issue of Enjoying MG – we have now booked to go to Jersey in 2019 – so watch this space! Fiona

Piddle Puddle Tour – Sunday 19th August 2018 On a drizzly and dank morning, 26 members in 13 cars gathered at the King Street Car Park in Wimborne. Thankfully, as we were getting ready to leave, the drizzle stopped, the clouds cleared, and roofs came down as we left at 1015 for the first part of the run of 20 miles. The route took us north via Furzehill and Gaunts Common then west via Witchampton before heading northwest by various Tarrants! Finding the A350 road from Shaftesbury we headed south to Stourpaine to find the White Horse Inn & Shop ready for us with coffee’s and malted biscuits!!! How many did you have Adrian????? From Stourpaine the route took us across to Sturminster Newton and south through Hazelbury Bryan and across to the ‘Piddles’ before driving through Dorchester and continuing south towards Preston and then turning east to East Knighton and the Countryman Inn for a pleasant and filling carvery lunch. Well done and many thanks to Colin and Jenny for putting this together and arranging the two stops. I have included a couple of images here, but more are available on Shutterfly.

New Forest Re-run – Sunday 9th September 2018 We had 32 members and 16 cars declare for this activity aimed especially at those members who assisted at the New Forest Run in June but who were unable to do the run on the day. East Boldre Memorial Village Hall allowed us to use their carpark to gather and issue a modified route. This was to reduce the full run down to a more manageable distance for our needs and to allow amendments due to the New Forest Marathon being held that day at New Park near Brockenhurst.

To reduce the mileage, we left out the northern section and cut across from Poulner via Linwood and High Corner to meet up with the route again towards the Canadian War Memorial. Traffic was generally ok except on the A337 heading south towards Brockenhurst but we all arrived at the South Lawn Hotel in time to enjoy a well-deserved refreshment and an enjoyable meal.

Despite the break in the weather from the hot sunshine of August, we enjoyed a bright, sunny and warm day with roofs down where possible. I have included a couple of images here, including some by Maureen, but more are available on Shutterfly. Many thanks to all who came along. Robin

People & Places Run – Sunday 16th September 2018

This was the 5

th running of this event, held every second year, and has become a favourite of our longer

distance runs away, organised by Tamar Valley MGOC. Sixteen members and a guest from Tamar, met at the Empress of Blandings on the Saturday for a 1000 departure. Unfortunately, Fiona’s eye had not healed fully and sadly, but most wisely, decided not to come. The Saturday proved nice and sunny and warm so roofs down for those who could.

We collected Colin and Jenny at the Merley layby and headed on down to have a pre-arranged lunch at The Greyhound Country Inn at Fenny Bridges. There we met up with Dudley and Jenny who had been staying locally the evening before. One of the cars had a problem outside Dorchester but with the magic attention of Mike was soon going again.

Passage was resumed via the A35, M5 and A38 towards Plymouth. A couple of us came off at Ivybridge and followed the roads on the south side of Dartmoor while the others decided to go direct, all of us, apart from Sarah who lives near Ivybridge, arriving at the Roborough Travelodge, north of Plymouth. After a quick check-in and a drink at the pub next door it was decided to get a bus down to the Plymouth Hoe and search for our evening meal. It was graduation day on The Hoe and a pleasant couple of students took our photo by the lighthouse.

After a wander down to the marina area and old town docks we found a café which was able to take our number of sixteen where we enjoyed a freshly caught fish and other seafood and an enjoyable evening. We missed a bus back to Roborough but managed to get another after 30 minutes waiting.

The weather forecast for the Sunday was not good and having had breakfast at the local Toby next door, we headed north to the start near Yelverton. Check-in was at the Knightstone Tea Rooms, part of the WW2 airfield at RAF Harrowbeer. Just under 60 cars took part.

With routes in hand and plaques attached to cars we set off on the first of four sections at about 1000 in light but annoying rain. This spoilt the views up onto the moor, but it did seem as if the day was improving. The morning drive, of two sections, was approximately 44 miles taking in the views of Dartmoor, Devon and then meandered through Cornish lanes and villages to finish at Boscastle. The first section finished at Lifton Farm Shop where we enjoyed coffee and cake!!! By now the weather had improved and roofs were down where possible.

The second half of the route was approximately 55 miles taking us to ‘places of myths and legends’, a disused airfield, Bodmin Moor and picturesque country lanes, arriving to the finish at Moorland Garden Hotel just before 1600 for a splendid cream tea. Here, prizes were awarded for the furthest travelled, from Cambridgeshire, and for the club with the most entrants. Yes, we won it again and all in our 20

th

Anniversary New Forest Run polo shirts. No one could miss us!!!

Tamar Valley MGOC were supporting the Dame Hannah Rogers Charity this year and we hope they have raised a splendid amount for them.

We headed back to Roborough and a rest before enjoying a group evening in the pub next door. Three cars were staying down in the area for a short holiday and the remainder of us headed for home via the Trago Mills park near Newton Abbott. A great weekend in great company and thankyou and well done to Alan, Howard and the all the team at Tamar Valley. We hope some of you can join us for our New Forest Run in 2019. We will keep you posted. In the meantime, we look forward to P&P 2020!!!! Robin

NB: If you are heading down to this part of the country and would like to borrow one of the

routes we have from this year or previous, please let me know. In fact, we hold various routes

from a number of different areas which you are welcome to borrow.

Mid monthly meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month and are held at a different pub within

the Southampton & New Forest Area. There is no format, just an evening to catch up with other

members, perhaps enjoy a meal together and chat.

RAF Coningsby Families' Day One week after the 40's weekend we were back in Lincolnshire for the Families' Day at RAF Coningsby, the home of the Memorial Flight of the Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire's, Hurricane's and Dakota. It's operational aircraft Squadron today is the Typhoon MK2 (Euro Fighter). If you saw the 100 Year of the RAF Flypast up the Mall and over Buckingham Palace, 22 Typhoons from Coningsby spelled out 100 in formation.

The Families Day is every 2 years to show their gratitude to friends and families of the base. This year’s event was organised by our Son in Law, so as well as the aircraft displays such as the Red Arrows, Typhoons, Chinooks, WW1 and 2 planes, he invited various car clubs along.

Pride of place went to Lincoln MGOC in front of the Lighting aircraft which added additional shade on a very hot day.

The Pageant Blue MGB (like mine) belongs to Kevin Cartner who took part in our New Forest run this year along with his friend in the white one.

Other car clubs attending were Boston Classic Cars with a very nice Triumph Herald convertible, my first car.

Aston Martin and TVR also attended.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day and the air displays were spectacular. We also entered the Epson Area MGOC Surrey Run to Chiddingstone Castle in Kent which was reported in the September edition of Enjoying MG.

Isle of Wight Day Out and Meal 2018 – Wednesday 19th September 2018 Eighteen members gathered at the Lymington Ferry Terminal to catch the 1000 ferry to Yarmouth. The forecast for the day was not favourable but, despite a slightly choppy crossing, we arrived on time and started our walk, planned by Trevor, via the Freshwater Way. Dudley and Jenny took a bus to visit Osborne House.

Page 18: Southampton & New Forest MGOC Newsletter...2018/10/10  · photos are available on the Shutterfly pages through the link on our webpages. Thank you, Fiona! I note that a year ago we

Our route south the Freshwater Bay is shown in red and north in green.

Acknowledgement to Ordnance Survey

Soon after crossing the River Yar and entering the footpath (in red), the wind eased, and we enjoyed a generally rain free stroll south across to Freshwater village and the End of the Line Café for a well-deserved hot drink and slice of cake!! In the nearby garage we spotted a nice Tartan Red MGC GT which, we found out, belonged to a local MG Vectis club member. From here Trevor lead us on down to Freshwater Bay which was breezy although this did not deter three of the ladies from dipping their toes in the briny. As Fiona suggested taking one step back to get a better picture, a larger wave decided to break on the beach. About half of the party decided to take the bus back via The Needles while the remainder walked back along the east side of the river (in green), stopping off at The Red Lion pub in Freshwater village for a drink and light snack or soup. We then continued north along the old railway track to Yarmouth. Here we found the 1605 ferry had been cancelled due to the wind conditions and at that time were told the 1705, our scheduled ferry was ‘iffy’!!! However, after a ramble around the town and a cup of tea, we spotted a ferry heading across and our sailing departed on time. From Lymington we headed up to The Walhampton Arms where our reserved tables awaited for a well-deserved meal. Again, a great day out in great company. Thanks to Maureen for some of the photos.
