AO5 South Wales Police In this AO I am going to ‘Examine career progressio n in one Public Service.’ The public service I am going to look at is the Police Force. I have chosen to look at the police force because I am interested in a career in the police force. I am going to look at what qualifications you need for entry into the police force, experience so if you have had experience with dogs for example you could start at a higher ranking than when you first start. I will also look at the rankings in the police force and promotion opportunities for example if someone higher up in the rankings may retire so you can move up or if someone promotes you and thinks you are capable of the job then again you can move up! The ranking order is listed below: Ranking Order = Police Constable = Sergeant  = Inspector = Chief Inspector

Opportunities

There are around 52 police forces in the UK. Following your probationary period (thefirst two years of service), you can specialise in a branch such as the traffic police, the fraud squad or underwater search units. Opportunities for promotion are also

frequently available because all higher rank positions are filled from within the policeservice.

You could apply for the High Potential Development Scheme (HPDS), which aims toprovide potential leaders of the future with fast-track promotion opportunities.

Promotion Opportunities

Opportunities for promotion are also frequently available because all higher rankpositions are filled from within the police service. If someone leaves/retires from thepolice force then it could be a prime opportunity to prove your self and move up. Or if someone is sacked! You could also be in a higher rank if you have had experience ina certain area of the police also someone could promote you for example if there issomeone in a higher rank and thinks you are capable of doing the job then again youcan move up. You have better chance of being in a higher rank if you haveexperience or degree.

Education

You do not need any qualifications to become a police officer but you are required to

pass the police initial recruitment test and two written tests at the assessment centre. This requires you to have a good level of education in order to pass them. Eventhough you do not need any qualifications having them would make any promotionetc easier and quicker!
