Nick Drage BDS FDSRCS FDSRCPS DDRRCR Dental radiology –the latest guidance (CORE CPD) Nicholas Drage is Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University Dental Hospital, Cardiff. He is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education in Wales. He is President of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.

This lecture will outline the content of the latest guidance relating to dental radiography including selection criteria, the use of cone beam computed tomography and handheld dental x-ray equipment.

Sue Greening MBE BDS DCDP FDSRCS Special Care Dentistry – working together across Wales Sue qualified in Cardiff and is a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry (SCD) in South Wales where she is also Clinical Director of the Community Dental Service. She is Past President and Chair of the British Society for Disability and Oral Health and was honoured to become President of the British Dental Association in 2006. More recently she was awarded an M.B.E for services to dentistry and FDS RCS adeundem from the RCS Eng.

The lecture will highlight current developments in Special Care Dentistry with a focus on the professional networks established to care for the oral health of vulnerable patients in Wales. Recent changes to oral healthcare provision for older patients in Wales will be described.

Meryl Spencer BDS MFDS MOrth MDentSci FDS(Orth) Orthodontics – what to refer and when Meryl completed her undergraduate and orthodontic specialist registrar training in the Royal Liverpool University Dental Hospital. After gaining MOrth in 2006, she returned home to South Wales to commence senior registrar training in Morriston hospital where she has since worked as a Consultant Orthodontist. Meryl is originally from Neath, but now lives in the Vale of Glamorgan with her husband (a GDP) and their two children.

This lecture will describe current best practice when monitoring the developing dentition and highlight the clinical situations when orthodontic referral should be considered.

David Lauder BDS MJDFRCS Consent - an update (Recommended CPD topic) Since qualifying from Newcastle University in 2002, David has been fortunate to experience many different working environments within dentistry, from the NHS in its various guises to private practice, from London to Northern Ireland via Sydney. Since joining the DDU in July 2015 David now works full time as a Dento-legal Adviser and is currently completing an LLM in the

legal aspects of medical practice at Cardiff University.

Professor Mike Lewis PhD FDSRCPS FDSRCS FRCPath FFGPP FHEA Professor Lewis is Professor of Oral Medicine and Dean of the School of Dentistry at Cardiff University. He is also Clinical Board Director for Dentistry, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. He is a past Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. Professor Lewis has published over 200 scientific articles and co-authored six medical

textbooks. He has delivered more than 500 postgraduate lectures worldwide. In addition, he has served as President of the British Society for Oral Medicine and President of the British Society for Oral & Dental Research.

Anwen Cope BDS PhD MFDS RCPS Anwen Cope is a Specialty Trainee in Dental Public Health at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. She graduated from Cardiff University in 2009 and has worked in primary and secondary care dental services in South Wales. She was awarded a PhD in 2015 and her research seeks to understand how antibiotics are used in the management of acute dental problems in primary care. She started specialty training in the NHS in September 2015 and currently holds a Clinical Research Time Award from Health and Care Research Wales.

Antibiotic prescribing: the impact of getting it wrong! This interactive lecture aims to highlight the impact of inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics for dental infections and the public health implications of antimicrobial resistance.

The lecture will outline the current legal and ethical standards expected of dental professionals during the consent process, with a focus on recent changes to consent law. Aims & Objectives

Andrew Keeling BDS PhD MFGDP BSc FHEA Occlusion – Modern Practice and Future Innovation Andrew gained a BSc in Physiology at the University of Bristol in 1996, and his BDS in 1999. His PhD (Leeds) was in the field of restorative digital dentistry, specifically related to occlusion. After spending 10+ years in full time general practice, Andrew took a Clinical Lecturer post at Leeds School of Dentistry (2011), where he divides his time between research, treatment and teaching. The lecture will explore some important occlusal features to look for, and how to treat them. An insight will then be provided into

the direction of research in this field, particularly in harnessing digital technology.
