Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind.”

Wilson Bentley was the son of Vermont farmers. He was homeschooled and possessed a ravishing appetite for learning. His mother had been a schoolteacher, and when Bentley was 15, he was given an old microscope left over from her teaching years. He then began to explore the world close up and discovered the beauty of snow crystals or snowflakes. He painstakingly tried to sketch what he saw under the microscope but was not pleased with the results. It occurred to him that maybe through photography, still a new technology in 1884, he might be able to capture their beauty for future generations.

Although it seemed insane to him at the time, Bentley’s father acquiesced to his wife’s urgings and bought the young man a $100 Eastman Kodak Bellows camera for his son. Bentley attached a microscope to the end of his camera, and, through much trial and error, he became the first person to photograph a single snow crystal in 1885. Bentley would go on to capture over 5,000 snow crystals in his lifetime, and it is because of his work that we now say, “No two snowflakes are alike.” He also photographed clouds, ice, raindrops, window frost, dew and landscapes.

During his lifetime, Bentley published many articles about his work in magazines such as Monthly Weather Review, Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, National Geographic, Harper’s Monthly, The New York Times Magazine and Scientific American. The 1907 book Water Wonders Every Child Should Know by Jean M. Thompson is exclusively illustrated with over 150 Bentley photomicrographs. More recently, Bentley has been featured in Smithsonian and House and Garden, and he was the subject of a Caldecott Medal-winning children’s book, Snowflake Bentley, by Jacqueline Briggs Marin.

In 1931, just a month before he died, Bentley’s book Snow Crystals, containing 2,453 snow crystal images, was published by McGraw-Hill. On December 23rd of that year, Bentley died at the family farmhouse in Jericho, Vermont. He was an impassioned artist who worked against many odds. In truth, the townspeople of Jericho thought him “a bit cracked,” but Bentley kept on, eventually achieving worldwide fame, becoming known affectionately as “The Snowflake Man.”

A Special “Art in Focus”Monday, January 24th

Sheldon Izen, a connoisseur and collector of Bentley’s work, whose extensive collection is the source for the South Shore Arts exhibit, will present a Magic Lantern lecture and slideshow on Bentley’s snow crystals on Monday, January 24th, at 10am, at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. The presentation is free, but reservations are required no later than Thursday, January 20th, 2011.

Mr. Izen will share the story of a scientist, but also the story of a life that was filled with a passion for art, a love of nature and a lonely quest to document the beauty in our world. As the story concludes, he will dim the lights and present a slideshow of Bentley’s work, using a vintage magic lantern projector and original Bentley-made lantern slides over 100 years old. Choreographing the beautiful images to a musical backdrop, he will proceed to show dozens of images from his collection, images of incredible detail, that show a fleeting moment in nature.

Due to widespread interest in his work during his lifetime, Bentley made up glass slides to use in his lectures. Schools, universities, and scientists purchased the sets. These slides are very rare, and it is thrilling to see these luminous snow crystals projected large and in amazing detail.

The crystals in these images have a unique living quality to them, as the edges are clearly starting to melt and they shimmer in their departure. Somehow, knowing and seeing that these beautiful specimens are only a fraction of a second away from extinction make them that much more special. And knowing how they were loved by the quiet, eccentric, passionate photographer who preserved them for posterity will be part of the fun. This will be a rare opportunity and one not to be missed.

In the words of Wilson Bentley, “Oh for a thousand hands, a thousand cameras, to preserve more of this exquisite beauty so lavishly scattered over the earth. And yet there should be no despair, for this miracle, like unto the miracle of spring’s awakening, will come and come again for all time, either here or somewhere in the universe, for beauty and life and love are eternal, the things that make the universe worthwhile and justify its existence.”

A reception for the exhibit and Bentley expert Sheldon Izen, from whose collection the exhibit is selected, will be held on Sunday, January 23rd, from 1-3pm.

South Shore Arts is presenting the annual Salon Show a little later than usual this year. The Salon Show has typically kicked off the exhibit season in the fall, but the opportunity to present the blockbuster exhibit, We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, was something that we couldn’t pass up. This year’s Salon Show, the 67th annual, will open January 9, 2011, and continue through March 27. Many artists expressed delight in learning that they had more time to create something new and exciting for this year’s show.

South Shore Arts prides itself in presenting artists with the opportunity to take home one of several cash awards, and one thing that hasn’t changed is the purse of prize money—up to $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded! This year’s awards reception will take place on Sunday, January 23, from 1-3pm. The awards presentation will begin promptly at 1:30pm.

The Salon Show is a tradition that has defined South Shore Arts since its inception in the late 1930s, when ten Hammond and Calumet City artists sponsored the first annual Art Exhibition of the Hammond District Art Association in the millinery department of the Minas Department Store in downtown Hammond.

The exhibit came about when Hammond sign painter O.O. Haag and Edward C. Minas, Jr., met to discuss a sign to be painted on the Sibley Street side of the store. Their

discussion led Mr. Minas to ask if an exhibit might be held there, just as Marshall Field and Company had housed the annual Hoosier Salon Exhibition in their State Street picture galleries, until discontinuing it a few years before. The invitation was enthusiastically accepted.

The public came out in great numbers to see the fine work done by regional artists. Among the 28 who exhibited were Lenore Condé Lawson, Frank Myslive, architect/watercolorist William J. Bachman, Mr. Haag, art teacher Charles Untules and sculptor H.Laverne Thornton. The exhibit included 99 pieces of art with prizes totaling around $425. Mrs. Conde Lawson won the first prize for her oil painting entitled Haven.

Since 1989, the Salon Show has been presented in the William J. Bachman Gallery in The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. The first Helen V. Surovek Memorial Award was presented at the opening of the 46th Annual Salon Show in October of that year as the exhibit’s top prize. At $2,000, it has remained the Salon Show’s most generously funded award.

Although the Salon Show was not juried until 1942––prizes were instead awarded by popular vote––jurying has been the accepted practice ever since. This year’s juror is Lanny Silverman, who has over 30 years experience curating and promoting contemporary and avant garde art forms from our own and other cultures. As Curator of Exhibitions for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs at the Chicago Cultural Center since March, 1990, he has curated over 90 exhibitions, most notably Sowers of Myth (1991); Michiko Itatani: Paintings Since 1984 (1992); The Nature of the Machine (1993); ConTextual: Art & Text In Chicago (2001); Leon Golub: Works Since 1947 (2003); Nick Cave: Soundsuits (2006); Karl Wirsum: Winsome Works(some) (2007); William Conger: Paintings 1958-2008 (2009); and Diane Simpson: Sculpture + Drawings, 1978-2009 (2010).

On the eve of the World Series, South Shore Arts hosted an MVP Baseball Party in honor of the We are the Ship, The Story of Negro League Baseball exhibit, featuring original paintings by artist and author Kadir Nelson. Special guests for the evening included Negro League Baseball legends Hank “Baby” Presswood, formerly of the Cleveland Buckeyes and Kansas City Monarchs; Nathan “Sonny” Weston and Lou Clarizo of the Chicago American Giants; and Johnny “Lefty” Washington of both the Giants and the Houston Eagles. It was an evening full of America’s favorite pastime, with baseball park food, music, giveaways, autographs and stories galore. The exhibit runs through December 19, 2010, and admission is free. The gallery is open seven days a week, and school groups are welcome to arrange a tour of the exhibit by calling 219/836-1839, ext. 108.

South Shore Arts and Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra served a combined total of over 34,000 children and youth in 2010 through education, exhibition and performance. In line with the mission to promote the arts along the South Shore, programs expose children to art forms that not only entertain children but also potentially inspire them to integrate the arts into their lives as a life-long pursuit. Outstanding performance programs provide an opportunity to impact a large number of students with a single event.

Each year the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra conducts two concerts at the Star Theatre to approximately 4,500 children who might not otherwise ever experience a live orchestra performance. The theme for the November 10, 2010, concert was Patriotic Pride. Teacher packets with CDs were mailed to participating schools with pre-concert activities that met Indiana State Standards. The concerts were sponsored by Community Healthcare Systems, The Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation, Inc., Star Plaza Theatre, Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc., Beta Rho Chapter and Mr. Glenn C Hannah in honor of

Mary Elizabeth Hannah. The Legacy Foundation, Lake County’s community foundation, provided funding for visual and audio effects that made the concerts more fun and interactive for the young audiences. The Porter County Community Foundation, Foundations of East Chicago, Target and Walmart provided funding that made 20% of all tickets free to designated schools.

Maestro Kirk Muspratt introduced students to orchestra instrument families as he demonstrated the distinctive sound made by each and how it conveys a feeling or a mood. The concert told the story of America’s history through patriotic compositions such as American Salute and Armed Forces Salute. Speeches of Abraham Lincoln were highlighted in Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait. Students were invited to sing along to the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America.

Last March, puppeteer Jim West presented an entertaining yet educational Aesop’s Fables puppet show to 2,500 children. Using classical music, puppet construction and humor, Jim interpreted Aesop’s classical stories, always ending with a moral. Teachers were invited to sign-up for

a follow-up puppet workshop held in their classroom. A South Shore Arts instructor visited each classroom and guided students as they created a puppet based on one of the puppets used during the show. Many classroom teachers built a language arts lesson around the puppets by asking their students to write short plays and perform a puppet show of their own. This year’s puppet show, Dinosaurs, will again use music and puppet-making to delight children while teaching fun facts about dinosaurs. These performances will be presented March 1-4, 2011.

Another unique performance opportunity for children takes place with Toot ’n Doodle for second grade students and Rhythm & Hues for first graders. These programs, conducted in partnership by the Symphony and South Shore Arts, combine performance with hands-on activities in both music and art. Volunteers introduce instrument families to students and demonstrate the correct method of playing. Then students become the performers as they have a chance to tryout each musical instrument. An hour of music is coupled with an hour of art, with the children making an art project based on their musical experience.

The 60-member Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra offers a select group of young musicians a dynamic and rewarding experience with a strong emphasis on artistic excellence, personal growth and exceptional performance experiences. In addition to working with gifted professional conductors and musicians, Youth Orchestra members are given the opportunity to enjoy the enrichment and challenge of performing with other dedicated peers. Members are comprised of students from Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper and La Porte counties in Indiana and Cook County in Illinois. They performs three times throughout the year. In addition to the November 7, 2010, concert, two 2011 performance dates are February 20 at Hobart High School Auditorium and May 14 at Munster High School Auditorium, both at 3pm.

Dinosaurs with Jim West Toot ’n Doodle

South Shore Arts extends a very sincere “thank you” to Chris Valavanis and the staff at Vanis Salon in Crown Point for conducting a marathon hair-styling event on October 20th in support of the South Shore Arts everykid program. A whopping sixty clients grabbed at the chance to get a new “do” for just $20. With 100% of the proceeds going to support arts education, that meant a check in the amount of $1,200 to make more artistic opportunities available to our region’s kids!

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra launched its 2010/2011 season with Love & Heartbreak . . . Duets, a combined opening concert and gala at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino, on Friday September 24, 2010.

The concert featured the full orchestra, soprano Angela Mannino and tenor John Sumner, both alumni of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, along with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus, whose 120 members were the evening’s honorees. Under the direction of Nancy Menk, the Symphony Chorus is celebrating its 25th year of volunteer voices with the orchestra. Six members of the chorus have been with the group since the first performance in May of 1987: Cheryl Ferguson, Judy Tarpo, Diana Kovach, Clement Lessner, Brian Mathias and Tom Tolhuizen, who performed at the Gala but who has sadly just recently passed away.

There was music from Turandot, La Boheme, The Merry Widow and Carmen, plus delightful renditions of Hello Dolly and Carousel. The second act was Igor Stravinsky’s dramatic and beautiful The Firebird. The orchestra, chorus and soloists received standing ovations and rave reviews from gala attendees.

Indiana University Northwest was the Presenting Sponsor for the event. New Chancellor William Lowe and his wife Pamela were recognized and welcomed to the community. Honorary Chairs for the Gala Committee this year were Maureen and Dr. Michael Luongo. The Gala raised $50,000 to benefit the music and education programs of the Symphony including the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, Youth Orchestra and Symphony Chorus.

Once again gala attendees were treated delicious food and exquisite service provided by the chefs and staff at the Horseshoe Casino. Eating, drinking and socializing lasted for the first two hours of the evening before guests took their seats at their Gala table to enjoy the concert. Executive Director John Cain led the group in a champagne toast heralding the start of a new season. A chance to become a guest conductor during the 2011 Summer Music Festival was auctioned at intermission. Watch for aspiring conductors Heather McCarthy, Mary Ryan, and Rick Svetanoff at one of next summer’s concerts.

First prize raffle winner won a private dinner for eight donated by Gamba Ristorante. Albert’s Diamond Jewelers donated a beautiful David Yurman watch, Horseshoe Casino donated a VIP Package at The Venue and WANISS once again gave away a fabulous CD collection coupled with wine and gifts from El Taco Real and It’s Just Serendipity. South Shore Arts Announces FY2012 Funding Opportunities

In its role as a Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission, South Shore Arts will present three grant application workshops in January for arts organizations and art projects to be conducted between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012. Arts funding is available to nonprofit Indiana arts organizations, as well as non-arts organizations providing arts programming in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. Workshops will be held at the following locations:

Grantees will have the option to apply for either Arts Orga-nization Support II (AOS-II) for arts organizations with operating income of $500,000 or more, Arts Organization Support I (AOS-1) for arts organizations with operating income less than $500,000 or Arts Project Support for non-arts organizations (APS) seeking funding for arts projects. For the first time, grant applications will be completed on-line for the FY2012 grant cycle, and all applicants, whether new or returning, are encouraged to attend one of the train-ing sessions.

Arts Providers Receive Public Arts Funding Through South Shore Arts

In its role as a Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission, South Shore Arts announced its FY2011 grants at the bi-monthly South Shore Arts Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at The Venue in Valparaiso on October 13, 2010. Panelists for the organization review included Desiree Simpson from Live Up Arts, Gary; Nancy Trimboli, South Shore Arts board member; Sue Eleuterio, founder of Grants, Inc.; Eric Thomp-son, Purdue University Calumet; and Carol Moore, theater critic for the Times. Panelists for the project category were Amy Davis-Navardauskus, Purdue University North Central; Edwin Shelton, artist; Dorothy Briestansky, Director of the Purdue Learning Center, Crown Point; Leane English Cer-ven, Northwest Indiana Symphony; and Jane Leslie, Indiana Ballet Theatre.

South Shore Arts is pleased to offer quality art classes at three locations in a wide variety of disciplines and media. Classes are available for ages 2 through adult. The gifted instructors at South Shore Arts are primarily working artists with degrees in their respective fields. In addition to the many classes offered at its headquarters in Munster’s Center for Visual and Perform-ing Arts––including drawing, painting, pottery, cartooning, colored pencil, photography––South Shore Arts maintains two branch locations. Substation No. 9 in downtown Hammond offers classes in airbrushing, painting, photoshop and drawing. South Shore Arts’ Crown Point location on the historic court-house square offers pottery, manga, painting, drawing and a senior art workshop, among others.
