(660)351-0517 Nonprofit groups seek volunteers to help out DENNIS RICH/DEMOCRAT Volunteer cooks Angela Green-Ford, left, and Bill Weigand dish out meals on Monday at the Sedalia Salvation Army's Red Shield Cafe, which now serves about 250 meals per week. By all accounts it was a successful first day of vol- unteering for Sedalians Bill Weigand and Angela Green- Ford as the pair helped pre- pare a meal for the Sedalia Salvation Army’s Red Shield Cafe. The duo first met Mon- day morning after deciding to lend a hand at the cafe, which offers a free lunch to those in need. “It is no questions asked,” said Salvation Army VISTA Volunteer Coordinator Sue Foster. “Just come in and eat. The cafe is staffed en- tirely by volunteers. It’s just a nice time for people to come in and share a meal.” Meals are available through the Red Shield Cafe from noon to 1 p.m., Mon- days through Fridays at the Salvation Army’s main of- fice at 1200 E. Broadway Blvd. Organizers also offer a free breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m. each Thursday. Weigand, who is unem- ployed, said he decided to volunteer because he “just felt like helping out.” “I have been unemployed for a while and I was start- ing to get a little cabin fever. This seemed like a good way to get out and stay busy and maybe help someone else out,” he said. Green-Ford described herself as an “empty-nester” and said she was looking for a way to fill her time during the day, so she approached Foster about volunteer op- portunities. “She put me right to work,” Green-Ford said. “I like doing this. It is nice to get out of thinking just about myself, and it just feels good to volunteer.” Multiple diners at the Sal- vation Army on Monday took the time to stop by the serving window to offer their thanks, and compli- ments, to the chefs. “This is the best lunch we have ever had,” one man told the pair. Foster said the cafe relies on volunteers as well as cash, materials and other in- kind donations in order to provide some 250 meals a week to those in need. Along with additional cooks, Foster said the Salva- tion Army is seeking addi- tional volunteers to work in the organization’s food pantry, as well as people willing to perform basic clerical work or to help staff a summer food program for children. The push for additional volunteers comes as a part of the communal VISTA grant awarded to Salvation Army, Amigos de Cristo and the Sedalia Senior Center under their “Minority Out- reach of Sedalia” effort. Fellow VISTA volunteer coordinators Brittany Buehrlen, with the Sedalia Senior Center, and Lisa Flo- res, with Amigos de Cristo, said they are ramping up a wide range of additional volunteer opportunities. Buehrlen said the Senior Center is in need of addi- tional drivers and cooks to help deliver the more than 140 daily meals to home- bound and elderly people. She is also hoping to attract seniors and others to a new mentoring program geared at helping Head Start stu- dents through reading pro- grams and some tutoring. The Senior Center is also in need of people willing to serve on the existing Service Advisory Board, as well as a new board charged with helping the center come up with a plan for future build- ing projects. Flores said Amigos is looking for people interested in working with children and teens, as well as bilin- gual adults willing to help teach English language classes. For more information on Salvation Army volunteer opportunities, call Foster at 473-2918. For the Senior Center, call Buehrlen or Flo- res at 826-2788. By Dennis Rich Did You Know? Potholes Pose PlentyOf Problems

(NAPS)—They lurk on rural highways and city streets, ready to costyou time, trouble and money. They’re potholes, and they occur whenwater permeates the pavement—usually through a crack fromwear andtear of traffic—and softens the soil beneath it, creating a depression inthe surface of the street.

While most drivers know immediately when they hit a pothole, whatthey often don’t know is if their vehicle has been damaged in theprocess. To help determine if hitting a pothole has hurt your vehicle, watch for the following warn-ing signs:

•Loss of control, swayingwhen making routine turns, bottoming out on city streets orbouncing excessively on roughroads. These are indicators thatthe steering and suspensionmay have been damaged. Thesteering and suspension are keysafety-related systems.Together, they largely deter-mine your car’s ride and han-dling. Key components areshocks and struts, the steeringknuckle, ball joints, the steeringrack and box, bearings, sealsand hub units, and tie rod ends.

•Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight path, anduneven tire wear. These symptoms mean there’s an alignment problem.Proper wheel alignment is important for the life span of tires and helpsensure safe handling.

•Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls or dents in therim. These problems will be visible and should be checked out as soonas possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and theroad in all sorts of driving conditions.

“Hitting a pothole can cause plenty of problems—damaging tires, wheels, steering and suspension, wheel alignment and more. If you’vehit a pothole,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council,“it’s worth having a professional technician check out the car and makethe necessary repairs to ensure safety and reliability.”

The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be CarCare Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits ofregular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

tion, visit www.carcare.org or call (240) 333-1088.Contact your advertising representative if you would like to have

your business featured in this space.

Don’t let your car go to pot: If you hit apothole, have a professional check outthe vehicle.

Q: I read in an interview withJames Van Der Beek that he wasgoing to be in a new comedy thisyear, but I haven't seen anythingabout it. I know he's in "Franklinand Bash," but I don't think that'swhat he's talking about. Can youhelp? -- Violet F., Harrisburg, Pa.A: James was referring to his mid-

season comedy called "Don't Trust theB---- in Apartment 23," in which heplays a "sort of" version of himself. The series debuts after comedy power-house "Modern Family" on April 11on ABC. The show is about a femaleodd couple who live together in NewYork City, with James portraying thebest friend of Chloe, the mean-girlroommate. I've seen the pilot and it isvery funny, and I love that James isable to parody himself in a non-self-conscious way, and that he isn't afraidto bring up "Dawson's Creek."

***Q: When does the new Snow

White movie come out in theaters? -- Brandon D., Omaha, Neb.A: That would depend on which

Snow White movie you mean. "MirrorMirror" -- which stars Julia Roberts asthe Evil Queen, Lily Collins as SnowWhite and Armie Hammer as PrinceAndrew Alcott -- hits theaters onMarch 30. This film is being billed asfamily fare, in contrast to the darker"Snow White and the Huntsman."The latter film stars Charlize Theronas Queen Ravenna, with Kristen Stew-art as Snow White and ChrisHemsworth as the Huntsman, and willfill the big screens on June 1. "SnowWhite" is a twist on the fairy tale, inwhich the Huntsman schools SnowWhite in the art of war and togetherthey start a rebellion to bring down theQueen.

***Q: I watched a full version of the

movie "Dressed to Kill" on TV re-cently, and I'm positive thatSylvester Stallone played the part ofAngie Dickinson's son but was notlisted on the credits. Did he use an-

other name? -- Lin L., via e-mailA: The part of Angie Dickinson's

son, Peter Miller, was played by KeithGordon, 51, whom I remember best asJason Melon in "Back to School," thebullied college nerd whose father(played by Rodney Dangerfield) en-rolls in college with his son to helphim assimilate. In the late '80s, Keithmade the move to directing, helmingsuch series as "Wild Palms," "Homi-cide: Life on the Street," "Dexter" and"House."

***Q: Could you please tell me if

"Against the Wall" will be return-ing? -- Kathleen E., via e-mailA: Despite positive reviews by

"New York Daily News," "Los Ange-les Times" and "The Hollywood Re-porter," Lifetime's cop-drama "Againstthe Wall" wasn't able to hold enoughof its lead-in audience from "DropDead Diva" each week, and its ratingsslipped from a meager 1.78 millionviewers at its premiere to 1.47 millionby its season finale. Lifetime opted notto renew the show for a second season.

Insert box concept has takenover the market

This week’s mail included a copy of BassPro Shops “2012 SpringAngler” catalog, andI’m confident that similar epistles fromCabela’s, Gander Mountain and a host ofsmaller companies will arrive any day now.

I’m beginning to suspect that the no-doubt,well-meaning folks behind this flood of infor-mation are trying to convince me that I’m woe-fully under supplied with fishing tackle.

They’re probably right about that, but, inthe interest of keeping my spouse from writinga letter to the editor of this publication, I’lladmit that I do have what even many anglersmight describe as several hard lures, soft lures,top-water plugs, spoons, jigs, jig trailers, hooks, weights, floats, snaps, leaders, pliers, line cutters and, well, you get the idea.

If you’re like me, there’s no need to fret, because the BPS catalog alone has 13 pagesdevoted to tackle boxes.

I was surprised to see how completely theinsert box concept has taken over the market.

Not that I see anything wrong with that. Farfrom it.

About 25 years ago, Rubbermaid intro-duced one of the first hard-sided tackle boxesdesigned to hold removable insert boxes.

The company produced outer boxesdesigned to hold three and seven inserts, and Igrabbed up prototypes of both sizes, along witha generous supply of insert boxes.

Rubbermaid is no longer in the tackle boxbusiness, but plenty of other companies haveseized the boxes-within-a-box mantle.

The beauty of insert boxes is that they allowan angler to organize his terminal tackle bytype.

For example, I devote one insert box toeach of the following categories: crappie tubebodies, 1/16-ounce safety-pin spinnerbaits, 1/8-and 1/4-ounce safety pin spinnerbaits, smalltop waters, large top waters, mini-crankbaits,wide-wobbling crankbaits, tight-wobblingcrankbaits, shallow long minnow crankbaits, deep long minnow crankbaits, liplesscrankbaits and whatever lures I’m field-testingat the time.

Compartments in the lids of the outer boxeshold, hooks, weights, beads, floats, snaps, etc.

Customizing the tackle I take on any giventrip is a simple matter of choosing which insertboxes to load.

Traditionally, I’ve preferred hard-sidedmain boxes over soft-sided ones.

For general purpose use, especially in myown boat, I haven’t changed my mind.

I now use soft-sided, insert-filled tacklebags or binders with soft plastic insertenvelopes for plastic worms and large spinner-baits.

Another soft-sided satchel with a shoulderstrap has proven ideal for transporting the rela-tively small amount of tackle needed for hike-in pond fishing.

Despite what I’ve just written and the over-whelming majority of what’s featured in cata-logs this year, insert boxes aren’t the only gamein town.

My main catfish angling tackle box is aclassic 16-by-8-by-9-inch box with threeattached trays.

It will swallow nearly 20 pounds of hooks, weights and other things dear to the heart of acatfisher angler without breaking a sweat.

That’s why my bank-walking catfishing“tackle box” is a five-gallon bucket with apadded lid that holds not only a small plasticbox of hooks and weights but also a bottle ofwater, several kinds of bait and a burlap sack“live well.”

There are people who are harder for the luremakers to catch than I am.

My brother Wayne, for example, keeps allof his go-to-the-river catfish terminal tackle ina 13-by-6-by-7-inch box with a single tray.

A similar box with two trays stores every-thing he uses when fishing for other species.

It should be pointed out that he owned atackle shop for many years, so he could grabanything he thought he might need off the shelfon his way to the river or lake.

For many years, my grandfather spent Jan-uary through March in Corpus Christi, Texas, fishing for speckled trout and redfish.

He never felt the need for a tackle box anybigger or fancier thanWayne’s, but then ahandful of jigs and a crankbait or two for vari-ety are just about all any inshore angler needson the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Back home in Kansas where channel catsand bullheads were his favorite rod-and-reelspecies, he didn’t see the need to have anytackle box at all.

When he headed for the river that formedthe southern and western boundaries of hishome place, he stuck a glass medicine bottlecontaining a few hooks and eggs sinkers in onepocket of his overalls and a cord stringer inanother.

A three-pound coffee can was big enough tohold all the bait he figured he’d need.

It just dawned on me that I’ve made itsound like I might have more tackle than Ireally need.

But wait! Almost everyone who fishes withme seems to feel duty bound to “borrow”things.

Those big boxes of tackle in my boat arethere strictly to avoid inconveniencing my part-ners.
