Hello everyone, spring appears to be here…. and I for one and ready for it.

Again, we are off to a great start of the year. We have had a lot of great

events and have many more to come.

I would like to thank Cheryl Rybka and her team for the wonderful instal-

lation dinner. This year the Installation was held off sight and was very

nice, the food and entertainment were excellent. I would like to thank all

of our members as well as the representatives from the South Shore, Ra-

cine, Harbor Lite and 5th Street for attending. I would also like to congrat-

ulate our two members of the year, Paul Mozejewski and John Nowick.

Next on the list is pier bidding. This was another successful event. I would

like to thank our new Fleet captain John Groth, along with his committee,

for making this another successful year by satisfying all of our member’s

needs. Everyone found a spot, eventually. This was quite the pier bidding

and from what I understand, may have set the record for the greatest num-

ber of moves.

Last but not least was the St. Patties day dinner. Rich Ilk and his crew put

on quite the feast. I would also like to thank Jerry K for the music that

evening. I for one had to take a nap after that meal, it was excellent.

Now for the upcoming events, we have a lot going on. Some “fun stuff”,

some “cool upgrades”, and some “necessary stuff”.

Soo… I’ll start with the fun stuff and go downhill from there.

“Fun Stuff”

We have a bunch of great events already on the books, Easter is just

around the corner with the start of spring and our Junior’s sponsored chil-

dren’s Easter party. Speaking of the Juniors, Ryan has done a great job and

we will be sponsoring a sailing program as an official afterschool activity

for the cities of South Milwaukee, Cudahy and Oak Creek.

We have a bowling function at the end of the month with Harbor Light,

We are having SMYC De Mayo early May we have blessing of the fleet

early June with a rendezvous scheduled a bit prior to that. Kyle Nichols

has offered to sponsor a large pig roast like full weekend event in late Au-

gust. We also have many more events coming on the horizon so keep you

schedule open.

“Cool Upgrades”

Ok, may be not so cool to some people but we are really trying to upgrade some of our infrastructure. So,

to Start, we have upgraded the web site. This has been a year in the coming, so I am happy to see it

launched. It is in its infancy and is highly upgradable so keep an eye on it and it will be changing over the

year. That being said, if you are willing to help with content, we could use it. Please contact myself and I

will point you in the right direction. Next, we have upgraded the WIFI though out the grounds and will also

expand the capabilities in the harbor once the boats are out of the way. Lastly, we have a new membership

card format. Right now, they just look cool, down the road they will be able to do cool things.

“Necessary Stuff”

It is time to get the boats ready the weather isn’t great yet, but it is truly good enough to start working on

your boat. I have seen a bunch of people working hard already. The water will be on this weekend. Unfortu-

nately, the last few years have been a bit rough in the spring, but you shouldn’t really use it as an excuse if

they guy next to you is working on his boat.

As you are working on your boats please keep the grounds clean. It seems to be a tradition at the club to

make a mess of the grounds this time of the year. Please do the best you can to keep the area around your

boat clean at the end of each evening as you are working on it. Letting your junk blow into the fence line

overnight isn’t a legitimate way to clean.

Lastly, the planning committee is diligently working on our long-term infrastructure needs and we will see

many of these projects come to fruition during the year. We will need a lot of volunteer help to make this

happen. The project of most concern to me right now is the harbor entrance. In the spring of 1989 we relo-

cated our previous outlet channel because of low water and movement of sand. This was accomplished by

cutting through our outer wall north of the previous channel and placing a 195-foot barge off of our east

wall to form the new channel wall.

Today that barge is showing its age and is going to need some repair.

We will be looking at it over the next few weeks as dredging begins

with the hopes of developing a long-time solution. Just remember

that “The South Milwaukee Yacht Club” is a Yacht Club. To me this

means several things:

A) Each Member is expected to contribute time to work on projects at the Club so that limited outside

help needs to be hired. B) Each of the people volunteering at the club is just that, volunteers. It seems that sometimes we take

advantage of the people that do a whole lot of work for this organization. Most people have day jobs, and this really needs to be a place for them to relax as well.

C) Don’t be afraid to step up to get something done. As with every organization, some people have been around longer than others. There is no reason to be nervous about being on a committee or sponsoring an event, work party, etc. We are all on the same team and share the same goals.
