Islamic Development in South Korea August 16 - 20, 2019
Overview
How does it feel becoming a Muslim in one of the most homogenous
country? This question may be appeared when we try to engage South
Korea and Islam as religion. South Korea is a country where Islam is
considered as minority. Based on the latest data, about 250,000 Muslims
living in South Korea based on population Korean population; 51 million.
However; the amount of population grows faster followed by the number of
university students who are interested studying in Korea and Muslims who
get marriage with Koreans. Regarding to this fact, Islam in South Korea is
undeniable admitted exist and present different 'color' South Korean
society, even some argue that it will be di�cult for Islam to blend in the
Korean society especially on demanding the rules such as �ve times pray,
fasting, and avoiding alcohol and pork. And this is what the students will be
try to discover.
Thus, World Islamic Student Exchange invites the youth Muslims to have a
precious chance to know the history of Islam in South Korea, especially in
Seoul area, how Korean Muslims survive and conduct syari'ah as minority. In
this case the student will be invited to explore more deeply about the life of
Muslims and meet with various people who will surely expand the insight,
increase con�dence, and widen the network.

SCHEDULE
Flight to Seoul, South KoreaBeing ready for an incredible experience, the students will �y overnight to Seoul for Islamic exchange in peculiar
country.
DepartureDAY 1 :
Airport Pickup
Arriving at Incheon International Airport, the students will get airport pickup for starting the Islamic Exchange in
Seoul.
Gyeongbokgung Palace
The �rst site that students will visit is Gyeongbokgung Palace, to learn �rst about Korean history from its building.
What special about the palace is, the students may discover changing guard ceremony in every several times in a day.
Cheonggyecheon Stream
In the �nal of �rst day in Seoul, the students also will be encouraged to apprehend Korean society especially in Seoul
by visiting Cheonggyecheon Stream. It is also considered as one of the Korean Landmarks for the foreign tourists.
Arrival and Korean Cultural Understanding
DAY 2 :
Ewha Womans University
Ewha Women University is one of the popular private university in Seoul. It is also becoming an Asian Center for
Women's Studies who has mission to seek and elevate women's status in Asia and beyond. Further, it is also home to a
Multicultural Institute, which aims to conduct academic research and teaching and to develop policy around
multiculturalism in order to create a diverse global society. Learning the history of the university campus and also get
campus tour at Ewha Women University is nice opportunity for the students.
Seoul Central Mosque
The next destination is Seoul Central Mosque. This mosque is the biggest and always be visited by Jamaah Muslim in
Seoul. After praying Dhuhur and Ashar, the students will be invited to have sharing session with the Imam from seoul
Central Mosque. It is important for the muslim students especially when they are wishing to continue study to Seoul, it
can be a good preparation.
Seoul Central Mosque
Near from the school the students will discover the great Seoul Central Mosque. They will witness and experience
shalat with Korean Muslims.
Itaewon Street
After full day exchange, the students will be allowed to discover Korean society in doing socio-economic activities in
Itaewon Market Street.

SCHEDULE
Meet with Muslim Student Association at Sogang University
The next day will be started by have sharing session with Indonesian Muslim Student Community who currently study
at Sogang University. the students will be invited to discuss about how it feels studying in Seoul as foreigner and
muslim minority.
Bank of Korea Museum
The Bank of Korea Money Museum is a cultural space and educational museum. The museum covers the history of
banking in Korea and the development of Korea's economy. The collections is vast and there are over 20,000 pieces of
Korean and foreign banknotes, coins and tokens on display. The museum consists of four exhibition halls and an
information reference library. It is a great place to learn about historical economic in South Korea.
Bukchon Hanok Village
Bukchon Hanok Village is one of the beautiful areas that are worth visiting because there are hundreds of hanok or
Korean traditional houses being well preserved. In this area many hanok houses are transformed into cultural centers,
guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses that can be visited and taken a look of the interior of Korean traditional
house.
Myeongdong Market
Myeongdong Market is popular as fashion street but if it is looked closer, it is not just about fashion. It's also one of the
best areas in Seoul for traditional Korean delicacies. Dozens of street stalls serve Korean street food. Therefore,
Myeongdong Market also offers plenty of sightseeing opportunities, including the gothic-style Myeongdong Catholic
Cathedral and Namdaemun Market, a traditional street market that's over 600 years old. The students can learn how
the religion associate with the society in the Myeongdong Market.
Homecoming
DAY 4 :
The students will arrive at their home country and being a better individual and Muslim agent with incredible
experience, ever.
Home Arrival
DAY 5 : This is the �nal journey in Seoul. Before leaving Seoul, the students are gathered to presented what the impression
and appreciation they got from the program. After short discussion, the students will be transferred to airport
bringing tons of experience in Asian developed country to learn Islam.
