Buyer/Seller Beware Reminders for AACA Online Forums

Thanks to one of our forum administrators, Peter, for these reminders:

"TALK" with the potential buyer or seller.

Inspect the vehicle before money changes hands (yourself or a trusted 3rd party).

If the buyer/seller doesn't honestly discuss the car (condition, history, etc.), it's a scam.

Insist the buyer/seller calls you from a line not blocked. If they refuse, it's a scam.

If he provides a number, but it's a fax machine or the buyer never answers - it's a scam.

If the seller wants you to pay for anything BEFORE funds are secured, it's a scam. (shipping charges, etc.)

If payment issues are more complicated than a check, money order, certified check, wire transfer or cash, it's a scam.

ALWAYS wait for funds to be confirmed as valid by the bank (not just a deposit slip) before allowing the car or title to leave your possession - NEVER assume the funds are good, even a money order or certified check.

Cash TALKS!

DON'T engage with an obvious scammer - simply delete the emails.

Law enforcement can't do anything until a crime has been committed - don't let it get to that point. And finally - if it seems too good to be true, it is. Not utilizing the AACA Online Forums? You should be! It's a great way to connect with other hobbyists on all sorts of things. PRESIDENT’S CORNER Ray McFarland

Greetings members this is a busy time of year for car collectors, with Hershey’s flea market and car meet. I have been extremely busy trying to get my 100 year cantankerous car to run better so that I may drive it on to the

show field and around the neighborhood. I also need it ready for the Salem Christmas parade in December.

We have had a very successful year thus far in our club with many activities and enjoying our cars and fun with you members.

This is the time to drive your cars and enjoy the fall weather, especially with open cars seeing nature’s handiwork with the changing of the trees and the smells of autumn. Also tasting my favorite, apple cider time.

My sincere hope is that you will enjoy this fall season and the beautiful fall tour to St. Michaels. There is still time to register.

This is not the time to leave your cherished collectible cars tucked away. They are much like us as we get older, if you leave them sitting they get stiff. Get out and exercise yourself and your car.

Keep those wheels rolling.

October, my favorite time of year. Hershey of course is the highlight of October. For the first time in over 40 years we are actually staying for a few days to really enjoy the flea market and of course the Saturday meet.

This year we are taking our 1917 Haynes Touring Car up to the meet for the 2nd time. It will receive a special award for being 100 years old.

Ray has been working very hard to get it running better. It is really a cantankerous old girl, affectionately known to us as “Helen Haynes”. She is a prime example of a car that needs to be driven more often. And she often gets neglected because Ray’s favorite car is, of course, his ‘29 Model A known to us as “Rosie” because of her rose beige color.

Do you have names for your special car? If so, let us know what they are.

Try to come up to Hershey for the meet. Look us up we are in Class 16 with “Helen”.

Hope to see you soon!

* * * * * * * * * * * * HELP US CREATE A SPECIAL TIRE REGISTRY

TO SHOW DEMAND (AACA Speedster, April 2017)

We live in an economy which is about 70% consumption based. Suppliers respond to perceived demand. The AACA vehicle owners currently have a weak spot in that demand cycle. Each year, we see an increased number of vehicles

on our fields which originally had alpha radial tires. These are primarily GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles from 1975 through 1978. Most called for GR78-15, HR78-15 and LR78-15 tires.

I propose that a registry be built identifying AACA vehicle owners who have these particular vehicles needing these or similar tires.

Please contact me with year, make/model, tire size and contact information.

Eric C. Marsh 575 Paulownia Drive China Grove, NC 28023 Cell: 704-267-9383 (I do NOT text) Email: [email protected] I will log all the information I receive into a database. Once the

number of entries is sufficient to gain attention, I will present a summary to Coker, Kelsey & Universal to get their attention and hopefully a commitment to initiate supply.

Please spread the word. We need to build demand.

REPLACEMENT HOSES FOR AUTOMOBILES

Meeting Highlights of the South Jersey Region

Monday, October 2, 2017 The meeting was called to order by President Ray McFarland at

7:00 PM and all stood for the Flag salute. There were no new members or guests.

Becky Counsellor read the Secretary’s report and it was accepted as read. Edna Norris gave the Treasurer’s report and it also was accepted as read. Bills were approved for payment.

Dave Birchmire stood to thank everyone for their cards and prayers during their family’s recent bereavement.

Martin Erdner also thanked everyone for the fruit basket and card while he was recently hospitalized.

Sunshine: Bonnie Green noted that a fruit basket was brought to Martin Erdner, a sympathy card was sent to the Birchmires and a get well card was sent to Doretta Scott and Bill Wynne.

Friendship & Food will be at Val’s Seafood Trattoria in Sewell, NJ on Thursday, October 12th.

Ray noted that we have 4 free AACA memberships to be given. Please encourage your friends to come out. He also noted that AACA membership is increasing for 2018 to $40.

Saturday, October 14th is the Bobbitt Toys for Tots Cruise from 3:00-6:00 PM.

Ray also thanked Janet Erdner for all her hard work with the Cruise nights, especially for recruiting all the door prizes. Ray noted that we also need to thank Brian Zimmerman Allstate for donating door prizes.

The Board decided that we should do 5 Kountry Kitchen cruises next year from May to September. Ray will speak to the owner and set up dates.

The Fall Tour to St. Michaels has 13 couples attending. We will be leaving the Pennsville Burger King at 3:00 PM on Friday, November 3rd.

New Business: Dave Birchmire took a few minutes to explain AACA National Balloting and that he is running for the AACA Board. He encouraged everyone to please vote for him and to make sure that you vote for 7 people on the ballot. No more and no less or your vote will not be counted.

Elections: We have 2 Board members who are cycling off the Board of Directors, Ron Scott & Janet Erdner. Both said that they would run again. Ray asked if there was anyone willing to also be on the ballot. No one volunteered. He noted that ballots will be handled by Don & Maria Symonds and will be mailed next week to be returned by October 31, 2017.

Scholarships—Ray noted that the Board voted to send $500 to Pennsylvania College of Technology with an additional amount to be given after the 2018 Swap Meet.

Martin Erdner asked why we are not considering giving our money locally and there was discussion regarding how the scholarships were handled in the past and the fact that the local VoTech had never acknowledged our contributions for several years. More discussion took place and it was finally decided that more information was needed with regard to some local schools to give scholarships. Martin Erdner will make some phone calls and report back at the November meeting.

The Board voted to discontinue paying for 2 service men’s AACA and Local Dues for 2018. Mark Wood has retired and Chris DeHahn is no longer in the area. A motion was made to this affect and was approved.

Swap Meet—Gary Green announced that the Swap Meet date is March 25, 2018 (Palm Sunday). The flyers are being created and printed.

We have several upcoming tours that we will be planning for early 2018. The Bethlehem Museum of Industrial History and the Marshall Estate.

Janet Erdner then spoke on the Club Christmas party. More research needs to be made as our original place had a large increase. She will make more phone calls.

Motion adjourned at 8:00 pm.

New Collections are Arriving at AACA!

The Antique Automobile Club of America’s Library

& Research Center has scored a trio of new collections to

add to their current extensive holdings of over 1,500,000

automotive related documents. This library is unique in

the fact that it is a free public library and available to

anyone worldwide. Its mission continues to be one of

service to hobbyists, researchers and writers regardless of

affiliation with the club or not.

The centerpiece of these new acquisitions is the

incredibly generous donation by Amos Media Company

of the library at the former Cars & Parts magazine. C & P

traces its beginnings to 1957. This extensive library was

used by their staff throughout its long publishing history.

AACA has had an equally long history of involvement

with the magazine as current AACA editor West Peterson

was a former editor at Cars & Parts and noted hobbyist,

editor and all around great guy Bob Stevens was a long

time active AACA member. According to Bruce Boyd,

President of Amos Media Company, “We chose to donate

our collection to the AACA Library as it ensures that the

work of our wonderful staff over the years will continue

to support the collectible vehicle hobby. This library is

unique in its ability to help people worldwide as it has

state-of-the-art library technology and an amazing

professional staff that will preserve the materials for the

future. While it was sad to end the storied run of Cars &

Parts we are most happy to know that the AACA Library

will continue to honor our brand.” The collection at Amos

Media will fill in the blanks of several important

periodicals in the library’s offerings. Being a full service

library is important to AACA as it recognizes all eras of

automotive history. “We are most indebted to Amos

Media for entrusting us with the care of its valuable

library. The collection will remain together as a testimony

to a great company and a great magazine that we all

miss.” stated head Librarian Chris Ritter.

The next collection that has made its way to the

library is a personal but important collection donated by

AACA member Mark Theisen. During his long time

association with antique cars Mark has managed to amass

a sizeable library that filled a car trailer and then some.

The collection includes rare books and brochures that will

be invaluable to researchers especially those with an

interest in Midwest racing. The archives are dedicated to

Mark’s father “Red” who instilled him his love of cars

and racing. The AACA Library & Research Center is

fortunate to have earned the respect of collectors around

the world and to continue to receive amazing donations

such as this. Another very, very cool eclectic collection is

working its way here to be added to previous material we

have from the Fisher Body Craftsman Guild.

Finally, a fan of the AACA Library and noted

automotive writer Jim Donnelly is working with us to fill

our shelves with books we currently do not have. Jim has

an extensive collection so we are hopeful to add more to

our holdings. Growing our library means we can help

more people, preserve history and that is the name of the

game.

Spring 2017 Rummage Box

RESEARCH The AACA Library and Research Center is open free

to the public during our regular hours of operation. While

visiting the library you can view any of our books or look

at specific information regarding one of your cars or

maybe just an automobile topic that you are interested in.

For those of you that can’t make it out to the library in

person, we offer off-site research available to anyone who

is interested to be completed by library staff.

AACA Members receive 1.5 hours of free research per

calendar year with additional time charged at the normal

rate.
