The South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble (SFPWE) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation dedicated to using the universal language of music to promote wider LGBT acceptance and provide educational support to LGBT youth. Its component ensembles perform in venues of all sizes and offer a variety of musical styles to audiences who might not otherwise have contact with the LGBT community. Through grants and donations, the SFPWE provides musical education experiences and scholarships.

Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the SFPWE was founded in 1986 by a handful of amateur and professional musicians. Today the organization has grown to 73 members, a diverse group of ages, genders, sexual orientations, religious backgrounds and ethnicities. What they all have in common is the belief that music is a uniting force which can humanize the LGBT community, break barriers and stigmas, garner attention and awareness, and enrich lives.

SFPWENEWS & ARTICLES

The South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, Inc., and its component organizations, provides a safe and educational environment for LGBT musicians, youth and their allies to perform quality

music for the LGBT and greater South Florida communities.

THE ENSEMBLES“It’s very important to realize that we can’t keep putting people into these boxes. … Any time you have any kind of art, it’s so important for everyone to realize that not everything is black and white. There’s not one answer. And music is very open to interpretation. That’s how everything in life is.” Ezequiel Beltrame 18, YPB student member

“This is my second year here, it’s a great experience. ... Because it’s a gay-straight alliance band, it’s an extremely open community. I’m straight myself, but I have a number of friends who have been bullied or suffered through it because they are gay or bisexual.”Clarinetist Jake Glass, 17, YPB student member

“The concept of bringing in the 50-some young musicians to sit beside the older musicians is a fantastic learning opportunity.”

Grammy-winning vibraphonist Gary Burton (Miami Herald)

The Youth Pride Band (YPB) was conceived in June 2011, in response to a public outcry against LGBT bullying, and a climbing suicide rate for LBGT youth. Inspired by Dan Savages’ It Gets Better Project, which communicates to LGBT youth that there is a better life for them past the high school years, and to help prevent suicide attempts, the SFPWE decided to not just tell, but actually show students that life does get better. The YPB brings together SFPWE members with South Florida LGBT youth and their allies. Representing a variety of demographics, students build a rapport with their coach, develop their own interpretation of the LGBT community in a safe, healthy environment and pave the way for acceptance to our community. All high schools within the 4-county area are invited to be part of this 4-week educational musical program. Each year a world-class guest clinician is contracted to work with the students and enhance their experience. In partnership with local business leaders, organizations and individuals, we award $1,000 scholarships to aspiring students who have shown musicianship, leadership and outstanding character.

The Youth Pride Band has expanded the SFPWE audience by generating attendance from local high school students, their parents, teachers and music directors from 4 counties.

Founded in 1996 by Ron Hughes, the Pride Jazz Ensemble is comprised of around 20 members, allowing for smaller venues and audiences who anticipate larger-than-life sound only feet from their seats. The ensemble enhances the organization by attracting jazz enthusiasts from all walks of life, inviting musicians and vocalists to join the ensemble and generating a continuous, ever-changing jazz audience.Members of the SFPWE’s trumpet, saxophone, trombone, percussion, steel band and clarinet sections form the Jazz Ensemble, bringing the sounds of jazz, rhythm, swing, blues and funk to the community. Special guest performers include 7-time Grammy Award recipient Gary Burton; multi-award winning jazz vocalist Lisanne Lyons; and critically acclaimed pianist Roger Rundle. This ensemble gives back to the community by performing at fundraisers benefitting the SFPWE and other charitable organizations.

Founded in 2013, the South Florida Pride Steel Band is the newest and most unique musical ensemble within the SFPWE family. Starting with 13 original musicians, the group maintains an average of 16 musicians performing on an array of steel drums and percussion instruments, and often adds featured instrumentalists. The Pride Steel Band is one of the few places where novice and expert instrumental musicians make music together, representing many different cultures at LGBT and mainstream events throughout South Florida. It has become a vital extension of our community outreach, forming bridges to communities who otherwise may never have wanted, or been unable, to attend an SFPWE performance and introducing the SFPWE name to new audiences. Its aggressive performance schedule includes weddings, Latin Pride events, fundraisers for the Boys and Girls Club, and many other community and cultural events. Members of the band are also extremely helpful in participating in other musical ensembles offered by the SFPWE, including the Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble. The group is available for private and community events.

Pride Jazz Ensemble Director Alain Ortiz has been a member of the Pride Wind Ensemble since 1994. Although he has pursued a career in business management, his passion has always been music.

"Life is like jazz... it's best when you improvise." ~ George Gershwin

South Florida Pride Steel Band Founder and Director Ron Hughesjoined the SFPWE organization in 1993. His roles have also included Music and Artistic Director of the Wind Ensemble, Founder and Director of the Jazz Ensemble and Percussion Section Leader. He has been a professional music and dance educator since 1985 at the collegiate, high school, middle school and elementary levels, as well as leading adult and senior citizen programs. Ron loves “harmonizing the community” (one of the band's original slogans). His goal is to expand the number and type of performances in order to bring the message of diversity, inclusion and acceptance to as many people as possible.

Jazz Ensemble member Chris Schlenkerdebuted his arrangement of Zip-ADee-Doo-Dah at the 2016 Annual Lesbian and Gay Band AssociationConference in Palm Springs, California, to a packed audience of more than 500.Chris holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Texas San Antonio.

The Tropical Winds Woodwind Quintet is a group of five professionals whose classical style caters to more formal, intimate and private settings. Drawn from the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, members consist of retired and current music educators as well as lifelong amateur musicians. Their combined passion for the arts creates a fun and educational experience at each performance. The inspiration for the Quintet began at the SFPWE's 2009 Incantations Concert, when a small group of oboes, bassoons, clarinets, French horns and flutes performed Double Trouble from the Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack, accompanying the Singing Sons Boy Choir led by Craig Denison. The group was officially formed in 2014 and has quickly grown to promote visibility and pride through intimate performances at churches, retail venues and retirement homes, spreading the message and mission of the SFPWE: education and acceptance, through music. It also gives fundraising performances to support SFPWE programs such as the Youth Pride Concert.

One of these performances was in honor of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who was beaten and later died the night of October 6,1998. His attack was motivated by his sexual orientation, and he became a national and international symbol of anti-LGBT hate crimes. His murder brought about theShepard/Byrd Act, signed into law in 2009 by President Barack Obama. In the spirit of remembering our fallen LGBT brother, the Tropical Winds Quintet’sperformances continue the support and awareness of the gay and straight communities in the ongoing fight for equality and reduction of hate crimes.
