Cooler fall temperatures are beginning to take hold in South Florida

as the in season approaches. Our unbeatable climate and championship courses combine to create a golf utopia. Instead of locking your clubs away for winter, fi re up your computer and plan a trip to our sunny beaches, fairways and boulevards.

A number of facilities have been transformed by exciting renovations, ensuring that quality, conditioning and amenities will all be fi rst class for residents and visitors. These changes are just as exciting as the renovations to the Miami Heat roster. We’re glad that LeBron James and Chris Bosh are here to stay.

Leading the way in the renovation category is The Links at Madison Green, one of the top 20 courses in the state of Florida and subject of our cover story. This upscale public-access facility added a new clubhouse and created a signifi cant amount of banquet and meeting space. Golfers will also enjoy a brand new fl eet of golf carts equipped with revolutionary Visage GPS systems. The layout is in the best condition it’s ever been in, and is poised to become the unquestioned leader in terms of hosting special events and corporate outings.

Be sure to browse our special “Golf the Gold Coast” section for a listing of the best locations to “Stay and Play” in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area.

For the latest news, course overviews and golf instruction, visit southfl orida.golfersguide.com.

Thank you for picking up this issue of our magazine. I’d like to wish you all Happy Holidays and as always, continued success on the golf course.

The leading public-access golf club in Palm Beach County is about to get even better. Already ranked as

one of the top 20 courses in the state of Florida, The Links at Madison Green will debut a host of new features and facilities that will optimize player experience, give members more and signifi cantly expand banquet and event operations.

Multi-million dollar enhancements will open as the South Florida golf season begins.

“In this economy, we’re an alternative to spending money at a private country club,” said Links at Madison Green owner Todd Schoenwetter. “We’re going to have high-end private country club amenities at value prices.”

Changes will be apparent on and off the golf course, starting with state-of-the-art GPS systems mounted inside The Links at Madison Green’s brand new fl eet of golf carts.

The Links is already the fi rst facility

in Palm Beach County to use the revo-lutionary Visage GPS system in its golf carts. Designed by Club Car, Visage offers unbelievable 3D graphics, trusted yardage fi gures, hole fl yovers, real time tourna-ment tracking and food and beverage call buttons. With the course at the customer’s fi ngertips, pace of play should improve. Golfers can also keep score digitally and email scores to themselves, or friends when their round has concluded.

Plans also call for an on-site golf

academy led by a highly-regarded swing professor who’s tutored a number of major championship winners. A very inexpensive year-round learning program costing just $250 will be offered at the new academy.

Palm Beach County’s only aqua range nicely complements the facility, and gives golfers all of the time in the world to work on their game since clean-up and repair isn’t necessary.

One-day, two and three-day schools will also be available. Information on the

instructor will be available shortly.Previously home to a pro shop/golfers

pub combination, the clubhouse has been transformed into a handsome banquet facility with multiple rooms capable of seating 200 guests for weddings, golf out-ings and any kind of special occasion.

To replace the old clubhouse, a new multi-use building will be ready for the season at The Links at Madison Green. This 7,000-square-foot structure is the signature element of the comprehensive renovation to the golf club. It will house

the pro shop, Men’s and Women’s locker rooms/steam rooms, full-service locker room attendant with shoe cleaning, a sports bar, grille room and a member’s lounge/banquet room. A patio area over-looking the lake will also be available for everyone’s enjoyment.

The subtleties involved in the renova-tion speak to the quality of improvements throughout the property.

Hand car washes will be offered to members and guests so their vehicles will have a new shine by the time they’ve played 18, even if their golf game doesn’t. The new sports bar will feature fl at screen

televisions and utilize a remote keg system that will hold 12 different varieties of draft beer. And for business-savvy visitors, the buildings at The Links at Madison Green have Wi-Fi access that can be used for brief lunch meetings or larger conferences.

The Links at Madison Green has never been in better condition and the club has recently purchased new John Deere mowing equipment to maintain the well-groomed golf course.

“We’ve done everything we can to improve the experience here, and our

facilities are now state-of-the-art.” Schoenwetter said.

All told, the new facilities at The Links at Madison Green position the club as a prime choice for full-fi eld golf events, charity functions, banquets, business meetings, wed-dings, receptions and special events. Wedding and event packages are com-

pletely customizable, and arrangements to rent space or book an outing at The Links at Madison Green can be made by contact-ing Rich LeConche or Jen Hernandez. For more information, call (866) 492-1828 or visit www.madisongreengolf.com.

The website also offers course details and tours, an online tee time booking engine, rates, membership information, specials and links to social media.

A Proven WinnerThe renovations didn’t extend to the

award-winning golf course at The Links at Madison Green. Quite frankly, they weren’t

necessary, but the budget for the course has gone up as the course is in immaculate condi-tion.

“The golf course stayed the same,” said General Manager Rich LeConche. “We’re top 20 in the state, so there wasn’t much to improve on really.”

The Links at Madison Green has been consistently stellar since the day it opened. In fact, Florida Golf Magazine hailed The Links as the “Best New Public Course” in Palm Beach County in 2001, citing excellent course conditions and service. Independent raters and readers have the course listed among the top 20 in Florida on Golfl ink.com, and Golf Magazine gives it 4.8 out of 5 Stars. Golf Digest has named The Links at Madison Green among its “Best Places to Play” the past three years.

The Links at Madison Green is also popular with a lot of the upscale Palm Beach hotels, and the golf club can inform visiting players on the steps necessary to book a “Stay and Play” package in the area.

Aesthetically, The Links at Madison Green is a close cousin to the courses you’d fi nd nestled into well-wooded areas of North Carolina. There are 12 acres of Pine Barrens incorporated into the layout in addition to 250 oaks, 500 palm trees and 1,500 – 2,000 native plants that surround fairways. It’s fair to call this a tree-lined track.

A large amount of dirt was moved at The Links at

Madison Green to create elevation changes and undulating surfaces. Unlike a lot of Florida layouts, holes don’t run parallel here, which can be seen as a good or bad thing depending on your accuracy. You’ll also have plenty of water to deal with. The Links has 42 acres of H20.

With fi ve sets of tees, including a set-up for juniors, The Links at Madison Green is best described as challenging but fair.

The Links at Madison Green is con-veniently located off of Okeechobee Blvd., which is the main thoroughfare that runs straight into Palm Beach. The course is proximal to city’s convention center and the West Palm airport.

Many Ways to Play in South Florida

On average, South Florida is one of

the warmest regions in the United

States. Cities like Fort Lauderdale

and Miami enjoy a humid subtropical

climate which translates into abundant

sunshine and winter temperatures that

rarely fall out of the mid-60s. The dream of

year-round golf is a reality if you can tolerate

the sweltering summer weather.

For decades, Miami has been re-

nowned for its beautiful citizens, gorgeous

beaches and non-stop nightlife. It’s also

home to one of Florida’s most recognizable

golf courses. The “Blue Monster” course at

Doral Golf Resort & Spa, has hosted a PGA

Tour event since 1962. Titans of the game

like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold

Palmer have all made history at the course

now referred to as TPC Blue Monster.

While the South Florida golf season begins

around Christmas for recreational golfers,

the fi rst peg put into the ground by a PGA

Tour player on the “Blue Monster” in March

has always served as the unoffi cial start to

the year.

Doral, which is home to fi ve champion-

ship courses, is just one of the luxurious golf

resorts sprinkled throughout South Florida.

The attractive mix of upscale daily-fee

facilities, pristine private clubs and resorts

gives golfers plenty of ways to play in South

Florida. Golfers can choose from dozens of

award-winning designs by luminaries such

as Donald Ross, Joe Lee, Greg Norman, Jim

McClean, Bobby Weed, Bruce Devlin, Robert

von Hagge, Rees Jones, Raymond Floyd,

Robert Trent Jones and Tom Fazio.

South Florida courses range from one

end of the spectrum to the other in terms

of variety and diffi culty. A number of facili-

ties have held their own against extremely

skilled performers during Mini Tour events

and tournaments hosted by the USGA and

the PGA of America. You’ll be able to test

your shot-making ability on layouts that

have welcomed various stages of PGA Tour

Q-School, U.S. Open qualifying and U.S.

Amateur qualifying. Less accomplished

golfers can take solace in knowing that

the majority of area courses make use of

multiple tee placements to accommodate

all skill levels.

Aesthetically, golfers can expect to see

plush green putting surfaces, lush vegeta-

tion, smooth rolling fairways and plenty of

water – after all it is Florida. You might even

encounter an alligator or two.

Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t

one uniform style of golf course in South

Florida. In fact, the diversity of layouts will

surprise fi rst-time visitors and maintain the

interest of avid golfers who return each and

every year.

Tree-lined fairways and rolling hills

contribute to more traditional parkland-

style layouts reminis-

cent of courses you’d

fi nd in the Northeast,

while sparkling

waterfalls, wide-open

fairways vulnerable to

prevailing winds, palm

trees and white sand

bunkers come togeth-

er to produce a more

tropical atmosphere.

The many architectural

infl uences and diverse

designs give South Florida a style seldom

seen throughout the state.

With an eye toward the future, a rash of

renovations has recently been completed

across the region. The focus and aim of

the improvements was to help modernize

both public and private layouts utilizing the

newest industry technologies. Clubhouse

amenities, banquet facilities and on-course

extras like GPS systems were also intro-

duced to give golfers the best value for their

dollar. At the same time original routings

were left intact when possible in order to

preserve integrity and maintain a sense of

history. A few of the redesigns have recently

been unveiled or are soon to be, making it

an exciting time throughout the area.

In addition to daily-fee play, area golf

courses gladly welcome hundreds of golf

outings, charity tournaments and special

events during the year. Whether your group

is in town for a business meeting or conven-

tion, or your family is celebrating a special

occasion, South Florida has the resources to

put on any type of tournament or event.

Now is the perfect time to “Stay and

Play” in South Florida.

Woodmont Country Club off ers a true test of golf in a

tranquil and relaxed environment. Located in Tamarac,

FL just minutes from Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Wood-

mont is a semi-private club that still off ers the charm of a private

country club setting. Built amongst mature trees and lakes, you

will fi nd the facility to be very inviting to golfers of all skill levels.

The club boasts two very distinctive 18-hole courses set within

the Woodmont Estate. Your time here will be remembered by the

mature landscaping and timeless character of both the Cypress

and Pines courses.

The Cypress Course is one of the top courses in South Florida. It was

private for more than 30 years and in the fall of 2007 was opened to

the public. This par-72 layout stretches to 7,043 yards from the tips.

The Pines Course is a shorter shotmaker’s course. It’s a par-72

that measures 6,432 yards from the back tees. Featuring narrow

fairways and smaller greens, this is a challenging layout.

Like the overall culture in South

Florida, the restaurant scene is a fusion of

many ingredients and infl uences. Notably

Cuban and Latin cuisine gets much of

the play, and the proximity to the waters

blue has cemented the area as a popular

outpost for seafood fans.

South Beach is ground zero for food-

ies looking to imbibe the trendiest tastes.

Signature dishes from signature chefs are

augmented by the chic and stylish at-

mosphere aff orded to those who dine in

these hot spots. An infl ux of Italian, Japa-

nese and contemporary French establish-

ments only adds to range of choices.

Throughout South Florida you’ll fi nd

waterfront dining in abundance. After a

long day on the golf course, a seat next

to water open to the warm breeze is the

perfect way to unwind. There are even a

few locations accessible by water taxi.

If you’re looking for something more

casual as opposed to sophisticated, there

are a number of sports bars and steak-

houses awaiting your business. Fine dining

blends with football at Shula’s Steak House

in Miami. Paying Homage to the undefeat-

memorabilia and makes a great location

for social events and business dinners.

Golf Instruction

You wouldn’t walk into an exam with-

out having reviewed the materials before-

hand would you? And when you were 16,

you just showed up at the DMV with hopes

of acquiring your driver’s license even

though you’d never put in time practicing

on the road?

An unprepared golfer is often an un-

successful, frustrated golfer. If you want to

shoot for the stars, and start shooting lower

scores, enlisting an expert for help isn’t a

terrible idea.

A round of golf can be challenging

in many ways. This intricate game tests

our mental dexterity, poise, fl exibility,

overall athleticism and patience. In order

to maximize performance and make the

game more enjoyable, a golfer should at

least consider logging a few hours with a

certifi ed instructor who routinely helps his

students reach their potential.

South Florida’s attractive climate is

conducive to year-round golf instruction,

giving eager students plenty of opportuni-

ties to practice, and play. As a result, some

of the nation’s most respected golf teachers

have made this region home.

Whether you’re a relative neophyte or

borderline professional, you’re sure to fi nd

an instructor, academy or golf school to

meet your individual needs in our area.

The majority of golf instruction pro-

grams in South Florida off er clinics, small

classes with excellent student-teacher ra-

tios, the most state-of-the-art technologies

such as video swing analysis and deluxe

practice facilities where you can spend

days on end perfecting your craft. With the

expert help of a seasoned golf instructor,

you’ll be well on your way to unlocking

your true potential and experiencing your

most enjoyable round to date.

At the risk of oversimplifying, South

Florida is busy. Witnessing the endless

parade of bronzed bodies on Miami’s

world-famous South Beach is an experi-

ence unto itself. Once the sun goes down,

the action really heats up as music and

alcohol pump through the clubs until the

early morning hours.

But South Beach isn’t the only show

in town. Greater Miami beaches are

traditionally ranked among the best in

the nation by our country’s major publica-

tions, and most are safe for the family to

enjoy together.

The ports are busy, earning South

Florida the moniker of “Cruise Capital of

the World.” Port Everglades, home base

for the massive Oasis of the Seas and its

sister ship, is set to become the world’s

largest cruise port in terms of passengers.

The Port of Miami is still king in terms of

number of ships. If you’re looking to set

sail, you won’t fi nd a more appropriate

place to practice your “Bon Voyage” than

South Florida.

A considerable buzz has overtaken

South Florida as championship expecta-

tions have been placed on the new look

Miami Heat. The organization’s addition of

free agents LeBron James and Chris Bosh

to team with perennial All-Star Dwayne

Wade has the city waiting for a ring. The

Heat are just one of South Florida’s four

professional franchises.

There is obviously plenty to do away

from the golf course. Whether you choose

to immerse yourself in the Latin culture

that permeates South Florida, explore the

fascinating Everglades, take in a Broadway-

style show, watch a professional sporting

event or get buff and hit the beach, there

will be no shortage of excitement.

With more than 200 courses in Palm Beach County, architecct John Sanford knew going in he would have to create something special to get people’s attention. At The

Links at Madison Green he did just that, creating a unique course that combines many of the best features found in other local layouts, with more that a few unique suprises of its own. The club has already been named as “Best New Public Course” and “Best Local Course.” Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, Florida Golf Magazine, Best Golf Network – just to name a few – have given the club glowing reviews.

Featuring 27 holes and pristine playing condi-tions that rival the area’s premier private clubs, Westchester Country Club is a challenging layout

just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean in Boynton Beach. Designed by well-traveled architect Karl Litten, Westchester opened in 1988 and has proven to be a fantastic test of skill and strategy for golfers of all ability levels during its more than two decades of operation. Having built courses from the Sunshine State to the Middle East, Litten incorporated a few of his favorite ele-ments into the three nine-hole tracks at Westchester. The layout features fi ve sets of tees, a number of man-made lakes, tight fairways lined with directional bunkers and diminutive greens. The strongest aspect of the design lies in the par 3s, which collectively are considered among the best in South Florida. Overall, the course can be character-ized as a great test of golf without being tremendously long. Golf is not the only amenity you’ll fi nd at Westchester. The club also features an 18-hole par 3 course, a newly-renovated practice facility and a full-service restaurant and bar.
