The COVID-19 global pandemic has touched everyone and communities in the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay region have not been immune to its effects.

The Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Regional Recovery Action Plan builds on our immediate commitment to keeping the region moving through extra support for businesses, workers and households – from payroll tax waivers to electricity bill relief.

There will be challenging times ahead as we navigate our way through the pandemic.

Caloundra road upgradesThree Sunshine Coast road infrastructure projects will improve travel times into the Caloundra CBD with Queensland Government funding of $45.75 million to fast track construction, providing a further boost to the region’s economy.

The funding will deliver a new Third Avenue/Nicklin Way extension, a signalised intersection at Ridgewood Road, and the acceleration of the remaining 11 kilometres of Bells Creek Arterial Road to the Bruce Highway at Roys Road.

Extending Third Avenue to Nicklin Way will incorporate works on Oval Avenue, Gosling Street and Third Avenue to provide an alternative entry to the Caloundra CBD to improve access and help reduce traffic congestion at the Caloundra Road roundabout.

Sunshine Coast Council is a partner on this extension, with their funding locked in, and will coordinate delivery timing of the project to link to the council-funded Oval Avenue upgrade project. Construction is subject to a Commonwealth Government contribution of $7 million.

The Bells Creek Arterial Road project will start in late 2020 and connect the emerging community in Caloundra South with the Bruce Highway via the Roys Road interchange, and unlock $300 million of investment in the region while also supporting more than 850 direct and indirect jobs.

The fast-tracked funding will also deliver traffic signals at the Caloundra Road and Ridgewood Road intersection, improving safety for the Little Mountain community and improving traffic flow on one of the southern Sunshine Coast’s main connecting roads.

Growing tourism infrastructureThe Queensland Government will invest $3.55 million to support Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay region tourism businesses including Aussie World, Woodfordia, Bellingham Maze and Tree Top Challenge under the Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund. This funding is part of a $50 million statewide COVID-19 recovery package for Queensland tourism. The Queensland Government funding, when combined with recipient contributions, will provide valuable construction and operational jobs, deliver new attractions plus additional infrastructure to support ongoing operations, and provide a significant boost to the local economy. A further $5 million was provided to Australia Zoo, Aussie World and Sea Life under the Queensland Tourism Icons Program.

COVID-19 LOAN

Spanner crab spring rolls, ravioli and other value added specialty products are destined for supermarket shelves as a Sunshine Coast crab meat processor adapts to market changes during COVID-19.

A COVID-19 Jobs Support Loan will allow Aussie Red Crab at Mooloolaba to move into new markets and maintain their business into the future after COVID-19 restrictions dramatically limited demand in their traditional restaurant and export markets in China, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, New Zealand and Thailand.

Instead of closing the business, the loan has allowed general manager Jason Simpson and the team the working capital funds to branch into supermarket-ready products like spanner crab spring rolls, ravioli, crab cakes, gyoza, dumplings and lasagne.

The move will mean the business will be able to continue supporting employees, including fishermen, maintain operations into the future and cash-in on the spike in home cooking as the nation is encouraged to stay home.

“The outlook has completely changed, the loan has been an amazing safety net. I can’t tell you the relief in my mind to be able to tell staff and fishermen they can keep going. We have to do things differently, but we have a plan in place and we are confident we can get through this difficult time.”

CASE STUDY
