WELCOME TO OUR AUTUMN / WINTER 2014 SEASONWe are thrilled to present a great line up of artists this season - from definition defying Frederic Deslias and Hetain Patel (who we’re delighted to finally get to Brighton) to New Movement Collective, who promise to turn the Circus Street Market into a fascinating dance labyrinth.

We also continue to explore the meeting point between art and technology and invite you to join us for a series of digital dance events, programmed as part of the Brighton Digital Festival.

Have your say on the future of dance by joining the conversation at Face to Face, our annual gathering for those working in or with dance. This year’s event is facilitated by Improbable Theatre at Sadlers Wells. See you there!

Younger audiences – look out for our events branded with the Arts Award logo, indicating activity that can help you work towards your award.

Bring along a curious mind, a sense of adventure and join us on what promises to be a wonderful and surprising season.

Jamie Watton, CEO/Artistic Director and all at South East Dance.

NEW MOVEMENT COLLECTIVE:CASTING TRACESInspired by Paul Auster’s seminal novel, The New York Trilogy, this promenade performance invites the audience into a unique dance experience set within a paper labyrinth at Circus Street Market.

Dance, architecture, film and specially commissioned music meet to create a world of illusion, mystery and shadow play, where nothing is as it seems.

Touching on popular themes of detective novels and modern issues of ever-present surveillance, the audience becomes involved in the performance, influencing the transformation of their surroundings.

DANCE DOUBLE BILLCutting-edge work by two artists with distinctly different perspectives - exploring the creative collisions between dance and digital technology.

CASSON & FRIENDS: FIENDNijinsky’s fabled dance solo L’après midi d’un faun (Afternoon of a Faun) is the starting point for this exploration of how we see and how we are seen in today’s digital world. A collaboration between dance artist Tim Casson and video technician Tom Butterworth, Fiend uses live video to enable the dancer to interact with multiple versions of himself as he searches for connections in his virtual world.

PLUS

READYSALTEDCODE: [ARRA]STREDance and data collide in an experimental collaboration with Battle Abbey students that derives its movements from computer science theory. Aiming for a perfect fusion of art and technology, this unique visualisation creates images triggered by dancers’ data, wearable technology and the choreography itself, using ballet to break down the theories and concepts that underpin computer science.

ALEXANDER WHITLEY DANCE COMPANY: THE MEASURES TAKENLeading new British choreographer, South Bank Award nominee 2014 and Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate, Alexander Whitley presents The Measures Taken, commissioned by The Royal Opera House in collaboration with digital artists Marshmallow Laser Feast.

“When we look to technology to deliver us from accidents, from choice and even from mortality we are asking from it something it cannot give: a deliverance from the conditions that make us human. We are seeking from technology...salvation from ourselves.” John Gray

Visually striking and kinetically charged, The Measures Taken explores our interdependent relationship with technology. With the choreographic process rooted in the digital collaboration, the work is both a dialogue and a duet between human movement and the digital world.

DANCE TOURING PARTNERSHIP PRESENTS BOY BLUE ENTERTAINMENT IN:

THE FIVE & THE PROPHECY OF PRANAFive young troublemakers are drawn into a power struggle that has divided a secret group of warriors. Given a chance to redeem themselves and to restore peace, their action-packed adventure becomes a celebration of camaraderie and the triumph of the human spirit.

Set in modern Tokyo, The Five & the Prophecy of Prana sees dazzling visuals frame a dynamic fusion of hip-hop and martial arts in an explosive tribute to manga – Japan’s popular graphic novel form.

Kenrick ‘H20’ Sandy and Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante, the Olivier award-winning team behind Pied Piper and choreographer and composer for the film Streetdance 3D, have worked with the monks from the Shaolin Temple Warrior School, Japanese manga artist Akio Tanaka, and award winning video animation studio Yeast Culture, to create this electrifying show.

Followed by a post-show discussion with the Company on Tuesday 7 October only.

“Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy’s choreography… flows like water, one minute silky smooth, the next fast and furious, b-boying, tutting and krumping, and requires little narrative, but narrative there is.”British Theatre Guide

“A mash-up of superhero comics, Japanese manga and kung fu movies. Hip-hop and fighting moves mesh wonderfully.”The Independent

THE URBAN PLAYGROUND: MICRO CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOPTake part in a 3-hour workshop with The Urban Playground team to learn the fundamentals of performance parkour and then create short choreographies for presentation alongside Steam on Friday 31 October.

To find out more or to apply for this opportunity, please email [email protected] explaining why you wish to take part and confirming you are available to attend the stated days.

STEAM [WORK-IN-PROGRESS]Urban explorers enter an empty industrial space and beneath canvas tarps discover the skeletal remains of a machine that changed the world. Captivated, they open a furnace and shovel coal on the fires of the past. An elegant model of efficient motion, it is monstrously utilitarian and gracefully refined. In the ghostly light of the hungry engine images of epic journeys appear. Engineers and drivers, station guards and porters hurry back to work at the sound of a whistle blast; and the passengers, the passengers begin to dance…

From revolutionary Russia to Buster Keaton’s Old West and from the Europe of Holmes and Poirot to the futuristic Asia of a James Bond movie, this train will take you on journey you’ll never forget.

This work-in-progress showing will be accompanied by two ‘Micro-Choreographies’ performed by local participants.

HETAIN PATEL: AMERICAN BOYHow much do movies influence us?

Delving into American movie and homegrown TV culture, visual artist and performer Hetain Patel once again takes to the stage in his highly anticipated first solo show.

With a personal and humorous take on identity shape-shifting, he shakes up our conception of who we are.

Through a playful synthesis of vocal and physical imitations, he conjures up film characters from his playground days: see Agent Smith from the Matrix get physical with Spider-Man whilst Eddie Murphy argues with Michael Caine.

American Boy follows Hetain’s international success with the TED Talk version of his stage work Be Like Water, recently reaching over 2 million views.

Followed by a post-show discussion with Hetain Patel.

“Patel is as much entertainer as performance conceptualist… a smooth quick-change artist capable of morphing between accents and characters with engagingly comic ease.”★★★★ The Times

MARK BRUCE COMPANY: DRACULAMark Bruce’s company of ten exceptional dancers bring Bram Stoker’s haunting, erotic tale to life in a heart wrenching and magical dance theatre production. With an eclectic mix of music from Bach and Mozart to Ligeti and Fred Frith, Bruce explores choreographic styles ranging from the subtlety of classical etiquette to visceral contemporary dance.

Jonathan Goddard plays the infamous Vampire Count, whose sinister and ruthless ambitions challenge the very fabric of Victorian society. As his victims and opponents rally against him they must face the darkness and savagery within themselves.

Winner of the prestigious South Bank Sky Arts Award for Dance, this critically acclaimed production should not be missed.

South East Dance is making The Dance Space a reality. Set in Circus Street, in the heart of Brighton, The Dance Space will be a fantastic new home for dance, connecting world-class artists to local communities.“Circus Street is surrounded by vibrant and diverse communities and we are delighted to be working with some of these already as we plan for The Dance Space. We want local people to be involved right from the very beginning of its development.

Dance can improve personal health whilst building confidence, discipline and social skills. With support from our partners, we are starting to make this happen for local communities by bringing Circus Street to life with dance.” Kirsty Sulston Producer – Public Programme
