Dayton Duncan

Dayton Duncan is the award-winning author of nine books, including Out West: A Journey Through Lewis & Clark’s America. Jace Decory has been a member of the Black Hills State University faculty since 1984. DeCory teaches a variety of history and sociology courses in the American Indian Studies Program at BHSU. She is past president of the North American Indian Women’s Association and has given numerous presentations on Lakota culture and the role of Indian women. DeCory’s essay on Mato Paha (Bear Butte) is part of the anthology American Indian Places, published by Houghton Mifflin in 2008.

instructor with the American Indian Studies Program at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. Her interests lie in Lakota history, art, philosophy, Indian women and cultural change. The Revealing Voices from the Past workshop will emphasize the research for and writing of historical non-fiction. There are many important elements to preserving history, and non-fiction historical writing is a major part of that process! The workshop will be moderated by Julia Monczunski, host of SDPB Radio’s Food for Thought literary discussion program.

Good, clear writing is, for most historians and professional writers, more of a process than a God-given talent. It begins with a blank piece of paper (or computer screen) and ends with a clearly organized and persuasive argument in the form of a research paper, a published article, or a book manuscript. History as a discipline is in its essence the dis-covery and interpretation of signs of the past as well as conventions of how to cite such evidence.

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea

The Art of Historical WritingIt thus combines research (the search for histori-cal evidence) and the organization of data into a convincing argument. Good historical writing is not merely description, though it may employ illustrations and appeals to the reader’s imagina-tion. Historical writing is one variety of written expression which seeks to inform and persuade the reader through the use of evidence organized around a central thesis or argument. (Boston University)

In the fall of 2009, PBS stations will air The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, Ken Burns’ six-part series on America’s National Park Ser-vice. The film, co-produced by Burns and Dayton Duncan, who also wrote the screenplay, is a documentary history and a dramatic human story, albeit with some of nature’s most spectacular locales as its backdrop. It is the story of an idea - that these park lands be preserved for all generations to use and enjoy. Wind Cave, the Badlands, and Mount Rushmore are included in this documentary about the National Parks. In addition, the documentary’s producers have completed the Untold Stories mini-documenta-ries, a companion film which highlights stories from the National Parks Service’s focus on the role of minority groups and individuals in the creation and protection of individual parks, and

the work that the NPS has done in recent years to increase diversity in the parks. One of the five mini-documentaries will feature South Dakota’s own Mount Rushmore National Memorial and its Superintendent, Gerard Baker.
