The six-act show, which is taking place at Auckland Castle on Wednesday, July 15th, is the result of a co- ordinated effort between King James I Academy, the Police, local businesses and the National Illegal Money Lending Team. It aims to educate the audience regarding the potential pitfalls of bor- rowing money from illegal lenders, and to show them that there is an alterna- tive. Detective Constable Keith Philpott, an Organised Crime Group Tactical Advisor with Durham Con- stabulary, said, “We know that loan sharks prey on vulnerable people in and around Bishop Auckland. When people borrow from these unscrupulous and unregulated sources, the results can be devastating. The highest interest rate offered by a loan shark was an extortionate 131,000% APR. The reality is often that the borrower cannot afford to repay the debt, which continues to build up over time. It can have a massive impact on families, the results of which hit adults and children alike. The theatre production has been devised to help protect those vulnerable people; to show them an alternative where they might not feel there is one. The backing of local busi- nesses, in particular the bank Santander and the owners of Auckland Castle, demonstrates the strength of feeling locally on this topic. “We hope that the stories portrayed in the show will help us get some very im- portant messages across and that, ultimately, people will see there is another choice to borrow- ing from a loan shark.” BATH bite back at loan sharks Volunteers and staff at the Scope charity shop, 12 Newgate Street, are urging the local community to get behind the disability char- ity’s Great Donate stock appeal this summer. As part of the appeal, the charity has released an online spoof of the iconic Cadbury’s Milk Tray adverts – casting disabled comedian Adam Hills as the dashing Man in Black and actress and presenter Holly Valance as his leading lady. The Bishop Auckland Scope charity shop has organised a live outside event located at the Arts Centre in Bishop Auckland market place. Volunteers at the Bishop Auckland Scope shop hope that the local com- munity will get behind the campaign and help them play their part in the annual drive to get one million donated items by the end of July. Funds raised by the appeal will support Scope’s work with disabled children, adults and their families. The charity is looking for any donations of pre-loved clothes and goods to help reach its ambitious target. Jonathan Woodhouse (Shop Manager) and his volun- teers (Lauren, Paige, Don, Dan and Terry) say, “Money raised by our shops support thousands of disabled people and their families. But we need your help to continue this vital work – so please drop off the things you no longer need at your local Scope shop this July. “On Saturday 18th July at 10am, we are dressing up in various costumes and will be handing out sweets, balloons and donation bags to the local community. We would be so grateful if you could fill a donation bag with any unwanted items. We will also be having a tombola and ‘guess the teddy’s name’ in the shop. Please come along. It’s going to be a fun day!” Appeals for stock donations Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans (BATH) group are biting back against loan sharks with their six-act show.

Don’t be late for lots of very important dates with a wonderland of adven-tures awaiting visitors big and small this summer at Auckland Castle.Among the fun-packed holiday entertainment on offer at the castle is an array of enchanting activi-ties celebrating the 150th anniversary of the much-loved children’s classic, Alice’s Adventures’ in Won-derland.The curious holiday encounters have been prompted by Auckland Castle’s link to the Rev Charles Dodgson, better known by his pen name of Lewis Carroll.Louise Strong, Auckland Castle’s events manager, takes up the story. “As Lewis Carroll, Dodgson wrote a poem called The Legend of Scotland, a ghost story which refers to Auckland Castle and how Scottish prisoners of war were once held here.“Dodgson’s father was a vicar based at Richmond just 20 miles from Bishop Auckland, and the poem was written as a present for the daughters of Bishop Longley who lived in the castle in the 1850s.“We are very proud to have this link to Carroll, the creator of one of the most famous and best loved children’s characters of all times.“We’ve got a summer jam-packed with not just Alice-inspired craft days, storytelling and games, but a host of other exciting

non-Wonderland activi-ties too, all of which are included in the castle ad-mission price.”The Alice-themed ac-tivities are taking place on Sundays, Mondays and Fridays.Children are being encour-aged to dress up as their favourite Wonderland character, and families to bring along their own Mad Hatter tea party picnics to enjoy on the lawn, where flamingo croquet, giant chess and jumbo playing cards will all be available to fool around with every day of the week.If Alice isn’t your cup of tea, then there’s plenty more holiday fun to be had, from soccer skills to child-friendly guided tours, ex-ploring, exhibitions, classic cars and open air theatre.Starting on 19th July, each day has been given a topic with Storytelling Sunday, Messy Monday, Wild Wednesday, Trekking Thursday, Foodie Friday and Play Saturday.Join young Mary Lennox on a journey of discov-ery on August 8th as The Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents an open air performance of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden.Performed against the magnificent backdrop of Auckland Castle, this en-chanting story has been loved by generations of children and adults.Featuring music, song and an array of specially designed puppet creatures,

the production promises to capture the spirit of summer. The performance starts at 6pm with tickets available via Auckland Castle.August 23rd will be all about the classics, with Classic Cars From the Last 100 Years between 10am-4pm.More than 100 cars from original Morris Minors to Ford Cortinas will be parking up in the castle forecourt and along the drive for this free day-long event. On August 30th it will be time to put your best foot forward for the Auckland Castle Trail Race, starting at the Robinson Arch and going through the idyllic 200 acre park. Covering approximately five miles, it’s open to those aged 16 and above and includes all terrain, trail and forest. It starts at 11am and costs £8 pre-registered and £10 on the day, with everyone taking part receiving a commemorative T-shirt.There’s also a two mile fun run for under 16s and under eights accompanied by an adult, starting at 10am and costing £3, with all partici-pants getting a special race day medal. The entry form is down-loadable from the Auckland Castle website.Auckland Castle’s events manager, Louise Strong, says: “Come rain or shine, there is plenty to keep visitors of all ages amused over the whole summer.”

Summer FairWoodhouse Close Church on Proudfoot Drive is hosting a Summer Fair on Saturday 18th July, from 2pm, when Revd Sarah Gill will open the festivities. There will be a cake stall,

tombolas, toys, books, bric-a-brac and refresh-ments.For more information call 01388 450838 or visit www.woodhouseclosechurch.org.

Family fun this summer at Auckland Castle

There is an array of Alice in Wonderland themed events taking place, thanks to the Castle’s links to author Lewis Carroll.

Police are investigating the theft of an Ultrasound Scanner from Bishop Auckland General Hospital, which occurred in June this year. A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust said, “Un-fortunately, we had a piece of specialist equipment stolen from one of our wards at Bishop Auckland Hospital last month. “The ultrasound scanner is a small piece of equipment about the size of a laptop and is used for varicose vein treatments. To replace

this equipment would cost us over £30,000. “To minimise the disrup-tion to our patients we have managed to take loan of an ultrasound machine, but this is not a long term solution and without this equipment we would no longer be able to provide this service from the hospital. “We are working with the police and would appeal to anyone who might have information to pass it on to PC 2711 Davies on 101 or ring crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Three local residents, Doreen Musgrave, Richard Bell and Chris Percival took part in a sponsored six mile walk in aid of The Fields

A retirement housing scheme in Bishop Auckland is urging older people living alone in the community to take extra care in the hot weather.Michelle Ildam, from Anchor’s Lingford Court in Hutchinson Street, has offered advice as tem-peratures soar across the country.Michelle warned risks of dehydration and heat stroke among older people are high in the hot weather. She said, “Anchor is urging the wider community to keep a close eye on elderly neighbours and their older relatives who may live

alone and are more vulner-able in the heat. “We recommend older people stay hydrated and keep out of the sunlight as much as possible. In these temperatures it’s impor-tant to avoid caffeinated drinks as they are dehy-drating. Drink plenty of cold fluids like water and fruit juices.“Try to avoid hot meals where possible and instead eat salads and fruit, as these foods are water based so will help you stay hydrated.”For more information on Lingford Court, contact 0845 140 2020.

Barrington class of 1980 ‘reunion’

A former student at Bishop Barrington is organising an informal ‘reunion’ for all pupils who left the school in 1980.Organiser ‘Net’ said, “Who’s up for a giggle and a cringe of how we used to be and see what fine

specimens we’ve turned into?“Nothing fancy, just a chance to have a catch-up.”The ‘gathering’ will be held from 4pm on Saturday 26th September at Wether-spoons in Bishop Auckland.

Four generations; Evie Mason with her son Sydney, daughter Jean, grandaughter Sarah, grandson David and great-grandson Lukas.

Evie passes away aged 106

Tributes have been made to a former publican who passed away on 22nd June aged 106 years-old.Evelyn Mason, or Evie as she was affection-ately known, was born in Cleethorpes but moved to Bishop Auckland during the First World War where she attended Cockton Hill School. After finishing her educa-tion she started work in the office at the United Bus Company. She also worked at the Hippodrome picture house as an usherette and for Ashton, which was part of Doggarts stores. She met her husband Syd Mason, who was born in Close House, and they were married at St. Andrew’s Church in 1929.In 1944 the couple moved into the Grosvenor W.M.C. as stewards where they stayed for eight years, before moving to the Alma

Hotel in South Church Road, as landlord and landlady. They remained in the pub until their retirement in 1969, spending nearly 25 years in the licensing trade. After leaving the Alma they moved back to their original home in Corona-tion.In retirement the couple loved driving around the countryside visiting many pubs far and wide and Evie held a journal where she would give marks to each pub. Unfortunately, Syd died in January 1992, when he was 89 years-old but Evie remained living in-dependently until she was 98, when she moved into Church View Care Home in South Church. She was an extremely popular resident at the home, where they even re-named one of the public rooms Alma Lounge in honour of her 17 years as landlady at the nearby pub.

On 23rd May this year Evie was admitted to Darlington Memorial Hospital after falling and breaking her hip. Her family say she was treated by staff there with ‘great care, attention, kindness and respect’. She returned to Church View where she continued to receive excellent care, but slipped away peacefully in her sleep on Monday 22nd June. The great-great-grand-mother’s funeral was held at St Mark’s Church in Eldon on Monday 6th July. The cortege left from Church View where all the staff came outside to say farewell. Fifty family and friends attended to say their last goodbyes to Evie, before she was carried out to ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ by Sarah Brightman and Quarantotto Sarori Peterson - one of her favourite songs.

Members of Bishop Auckland Neighbourhood Policing Team have been donating pots and compost to local community garden projects and allotments in the area. Police have recently put a stop to the work of numerous cannabis growers in the town thanks to in-

formation received from members of the public. Instead of destroying the items, they have been recycled back into the com-munity where they have been gratefully received. If you suspect someone is growing cannabis in your area, contact Bishop Auckland police on 101.

Councillor Lee Brownson, Mayor of Bishop Auckland, chose his first winner from the POD Gallery’s fort-nightly photographic com-petition last week. The photography showcase at the town’s new creative hub gallery in Market Place includes a ‘community wall’, with members of the public being encouraged to display both their own handiwork and historic images.

One will be picked every other week by the town’s Mayor, to feature on a limited edition mug, which will then be sold to raise money for his chosen civic charity, Help for Heroes.Nick Cook, the first winner of the competition, sub-mitted a beautiful sunset photograph.Councillor Brownson said, "When I first looked at the photo wall, there was one particular photo that stood

out a mile. The colours in the sunset were beautiful, the dark reds and oranges were picture perfect. I've never seen a sunset like it in my life. “I would urge anyone out there that might have that special photo hidden away or saved on their phone, to add it to the wall in the POD and, who knows, you might see it printed on a mug where people can buy it and use for years to come.”

Sainsbury’s Bishop Auckland has raised almost £7,500 for Kays Hill Animal Sanctuary, as part of the Local Charity of the Year scheme. The sanctuary has an array of animals, from the small and fluffy bunny to the wild fox, the exotic parrot and lizard – and all are taken in and cared for by a team of volunteers. The facility is just two miles from the Sainsbury’s Bishop Auckland store at Bildershaw on the A68 towards Darlington. Once taken in, all animals are offered a stress free environment to recover and recuperate before a new loving home can be found for those able to be re-homed, and a home for life given to the more

exotic variety that are not recommended as pets. This is a no kill shelter that was chosen by customers and colleagues last June and has received support from the store for the past year. Activities which helped raise £4,175.69 of the total have included a sponsored dog walk, tombolas, bag packs and the big bike ride. Kays Hill also received tea pots and crockery to help set up their tea room and, through the generosity of the store customers and colleagues, the donation bins at the front of store over the year donated over £3,322.91 worth of animal food. This does not include customers dropping off specialised food, blankets and toys.

Christine Jeffery, Store Manager of Sainsbury’s Bishop Auckland, said, “We’ve had an excellent year supporting Kays Hill Animal Sanctuary, our customers and colleagues have got involved with a number of fundraising ac-tivities. We’d like to thank everyone at Kays Hill for making it such a brilliant partnership.”Kevin Plummber, the owner of Kays Hill, added, “We’d like to thank the customers and colleagues at Sainsbury’s in Bishop Auckland for their support over the past year. “It has made such a differ-ence to Kays Hill Animal Sanctuary and we’re ex-tremely grateful for the donations and awareness we’ve been able to raise.”

A local woman is hoping to raise funds to help a poorly dog who has suffered ap-palling cruelty. Christine Kipling works with a charity called ‘Better Life Dog Rescue’ and has been fostering dogs and other animals for over 20 years. She was approached by the charity to foster Fram after he was attacked by locals in a remote village in Romania for raiding bins. Those re-sponsible used a machete to hack off part of the dog’s leg, before setting him free to suffer.Luckily, a volunteer working in a local centre found Fram - which means Polar in English - and took him to a vet for treatment. The 2 year-old will now soon be on his way to England, where he will be fostered by the Bishop Auckland family.Christine said, “I have never

come across anything this horrific. We would like to raise enough money to have him treated by the super vet Noel FitzPatrick.“Any help people can give us would be fantastic. It would be great if Bishop Auckland businesses could get together and give this dog the help he needs.”Anyone who would like to help Christine in her fun-draising efforts for Fram can give her a call on 07894 449580.

Funds needed to treat ‘horrific’ injury

Part of Fram’s leg was cut off by locals in Romania just because he was trying to find food.
