From our President – William Bennett

Welcome to the 2017 SC ACDA Fall Conference! The SC ACDA Board

has once again worked to offer showcase performances by some of the

best choirs in our state, world class clinicians for our honor choir

students (and us!) to learn from, and a great slate of professional

development opportunities to help us continue to learn and grow as

conductors and teachers. We are happy you are here and look forward to

having a great conference.

I am deeply honored and humbled to be taking the reins of this

organization and very excited about some of the upcoming initiatives we

will be bringing to you over the next few years! Since joining the SC ACDA Board in 2011, I

have witnessed tremendous growth within our organization. In addition to our State Fall

Conferences our presence has grown at the Regional and National Conventions as well. We are

also in the process of putting together a Summer Reading Session at Bob Jones University in

July of 2018 that will feature reading sessions of music so you can begin programming for the

upcoming year as well as workshops and clinics to help reinvigorate your passion for the choral

arts. Our 2018 Fall Conference will be held at the College of Charleston next fall, and we look

forward to seeing you there as well.

The SC ACDA is also making a push to help more colleges and universities begin student

chapters. These student chapters are the conduit to helping our students become not only

inspired, but also navigate the early years of teaching with a network of seasoned veterans and

young teachers who are walking the same path. These networking opportunities are vital as we

continue to be stewards of the choral art into the future. If you do not already have a student

chapter at your school, I hope you will consider starting one.

The Southern Division ACDA Conference will be held February 21-24 in Louisville, KY. I

hope you plan to attend this conference as it is one of the best ways to learn and grow as a

conductor, continue building your network of support, and hear some truly great performances

by the best choirs in our division. Honor choir auditions are now open and the deadline to submit

is October 16. Please visit www.acdasouthern.org for more information about this conference.

We would also like to say a special thank you to Dr. Don Campbell for his service for the past

four years as President and President-Elect. Don not only led us through one of the most trying

times for our organization, the cancellation of our Fall Conference due to Hurricane Matthew,

but also worked to grow our organization and offer our directors new and exciting opportunities.

In addition, he worked tirelessly to host three conferences at Southern Wesleyan University. We

will work to carry on his vision of expanding SC ACDA to all directors and helping serve you

and your needs. Please feel free to contact me with suggestions for our conferences, clinicians

that you would like to see us contact, and other events that SC ACDA might be able to offer you,

our great conductors of SC.

From our Conference Chair and Past President – Dr. Don Campbell

Welcome back to our beautiful, Southern Wesleyan University Central

campus. SWU has a long, rich history here in South Carolina since it

began in 1906. We are thrilled to be able to offer our campus to the South

Carolina American Choral Directors to celebrate and encourage choral

music in our state. We trust you will find your time on our campus

rejuvenating and inspiring.

This weekend, we take the time to focus on timeless ideas. These ideas

spring from the hearts and souls of people striving to communicate what

is most important to them using a language that speaks much deeper than

words alone possibly could. The students in our honor choirs understand this—why else would

they be here this weekend? Their teachers understand this—they have given up this weekend to

provide their students with an experience deeper than what they might be able provide in the

day-to-day classroom experience. Our honor choir directors have prepared wonderful music and

are ready to inspire and motivate our students to excellence. Parents, thank you for allowing your

children to experience the power of raising their voices in one accord with many others to create

a touch of heaven on earth.

We are grateful for so many people who have put their stamps on this weekend. The SC ACDA

board has put in countless hours to provide a quality experience for the singers in our state. We

want to especially thank Dr. Todd Voss, president of Southern Wesleyan University, for the

enthusiastic way he embraced the idea of bringing the conference to SWU. The support of our

provost, Dr. Tonya Strickland, has been wonderful. The SWU faculty, staff, maintenance staff,

food services staff, and administrative staff have all cheerfully gone above and beyond to support

making this event successful. We also want to thank our SWU Fine Arts Department chair,

Professor Jane P. Dill for her tremendous support before and during the conference. The music

faculty, staff, and students have also stepped up to do whatever was needed.

We are thrilled to welcome our South Carolina State Superintendent, Molly Spearman, to our

campus to bring a timely message on the value of choral music in our schools. We are sure you

will enjoy what she has to say.

For those of us who love choral music, our work is not done. There are still those who have not

yet experienced joy singing can bring. We at SC ACDA are committed to sharing choral music

in our spheres of influence. Will you all, honor choir singers, parents, families, friends, teachers,

and administrators, earnestly seek how you might increase your influence to make sure this art

form thrives?

We hope you enjoy your experience these three days whether in the choirs, in the seminars, or in

the audience.

Sing-cerely,

Dr. Don R. Campbell

Past-President, South Carolina ACDA
