Launched in the fall of 2001, the Rutgers Graduate School of Education's South Africa Initiative facilitates international contact between the United States and South Africa with the vision of empowering educators as vital agents and architects of a diverse democracy. The ultimate goal is to develop culturally competent K-30 educators who share their talents and expertise via in-person contact and distance-education technology in the development of strategies and interventions for the improvement of teaching and learning, and community learning in both countries. We are committed to educating students for responsible global citizenship in ways that both deepen their learning and improve the quality of the world community. Each year selected participants travel to South Africa to engage in lectures, participate in school and community-development projects, and visit historical and cultural arenas. Upon their return, each participant develops a project for their school or community. Projects have focused on topics as varied as “the development of multicultural competencies” and “narratives of hope”. This exchange of talents and expertise has created an academy without walls; in this vibrant learning environment, educators from the US and SA develop strategies for the improvement of teaching and learning. The success of SAI is evident by the increased levels of motivation and student retention of teachers and reported increases in learning, achievement, retention and parental and community involvement in school activities in South Africa.
