unforgettable experiences

FROM MOROCCAN SOUKS TO THE SAHARA DESERT Morocco, with its rich and interestingculture, should be high on everyone’stravel list. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion and dynastic rule have givenMorocco the many different culturalinfluences that are evident in today'ssociety. From the Phoenicians whoentered Morocco in the 6th centuryBC, and the Roman occupation fromabout 40 AD to the formation ofIslamic Morocco and the influence of Europeans in the years after,Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of empires.

CROSSING THE LINESituated just north of the equator offthe coast of Gabon, Sao Tome andPrincipe is a Portuguese-speakingisland nation in the Gulf of Guinea. The sublime laid-back tempo of theislands is enhanced by a wealth of natural attractions: miles of palm-fringed beaches, large areas of rainforest, mellow fishing villages and excellent birdlife. You can alsoexperience a true island paradise witha beach party on the wonderfullynamed Bom Bom Island. With its pristine beaches and crystal clearwaters, this tiny islet on the northernshore of the volcanic island of Principe is a hidden gem.

After the exotic hustle and bustle ofMorocco, the islands off Africa’s westcoast offer a complete change. Theupland villages and volcanic landscapesof Gran Canaria are little known jewelsof this charming island. Conquered bythe Spanish in the fifteenth century andfought over by the Dutch and British,it was here, during a battle in 1797,that Lord Nelson lost his right arm.Another English naval hero features inthe history of the Cape Verde Islandsas, in 1585, Sir Francis Drake twiceattacked the Portuguese forces at RibeiraGrande, the island’s capital. Portugalhad occupied the previously uninhabitedCape Verde in the fifteenth centuryand they became an important link in the transatlantic slave trade.

As Aegean Odyssey sails south, shepasses over the Equator and this eventwill be marked – as maritime traditiondemands – by the Crossing the LineCeremony.

THE SKELETON COAST TO SOUTH AFRICA GAME RESERVESBack on the mainland and the remarkable country of Namibia. Withits unique landscapes and turbulentcolonial history, Namibia is one ofAfrica’s “must-see” destinations. This reputation will be confirmed at both your Namibian destinations:Walvis Bay on the Skeleton Coast with its incredible lagoon and uniquemarine life and the German colonialport of Luderitz sandwiched betweenthe barren Namib Desert and thewindswept South Atlantic coast.Although we have become some-what accustomed to seeing Africa's magnificent wildlife on our televisions, there is nothing comparable to comingface-to-face with one of the savannah's"Big Five" (lion, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhinoceros). In SouthAfrica, you will have the opportunity to come up close to these wonderfulanimals with safaris in three of thecountry’s top game parks (see page27). South Africa also boasts manyother magnificent attractions includingthe charms of Cape Town and thebeautiful Garden Route.

The location of Cape Town, known in South Africa as the Mother City, is one of the world’s great sights with its backdrop of the majestic TableMountain and its stunning SouthAtlantic coast. It is a place of great creativity, culture and history. It is also famous for its proximity to the marvellous vineyards of theStellenbosch Valley and the CapeWinelands region. Another nearbymarvel is the Garden Route which runs along the coast where the mightyAtlantic and Indian oceans meet and features a unique landscape ofnative flora. In this remarkable country you willalso visit Durban and the nearby Zulunation. Here you will not only be guided through the fascinating butbloody history of this most famous of African peoples but also experiencetheir vibrant culture. As Aegean Odyssey makes its

way south to Cape Town, it isthe perfect time to rememberone of the great companiesform the Golden Age of shipping. Union-Castle operated a fleet of passengerliners and cargo ships betweenEurope and South Africa from1900 to 1977. Some of themost elegant ships ever builtmade up Union-Castle’s fleetand they were well known for the lavender-hulled liners with red funnels topped in black. Union-Castle ran on a very strict timetable: every Thursday at 4pm one of their Royal Mail ships would leave Southampton bound for Cape Town and at the same time, a Union-Castle Royal Mail Ship would leave Cape Town bound for Southampton.

Many of the countries here have it all: a tropical climate – warm all year round, fascinating culture, wonderfulfood and charming people. It is alsohome to dynamic cities such asSingapore and natural wonders including the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand. It’s rich history has left a legacy ofbreathtaking architectural and artistictreasures. You will visit massive ancienttemples, elegant mosques, historicchurches and mysterious ruins – thediverse nature of Asia’s history is forever on display.

ISLANDS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN On this leg of the cruise, AegeanOdyssey calls at magical tropicalislands: French Mayotte in theComoros and Mahe, Praslin and LaDigue in the Seychelles. Here you willfind the finest white sandy beaches inthe Indian Ocean, warm waters and beautiful colonial architecture. Theperfect places to slow down and relax.

LANDS OF WONDERSSoutheast Asia and India are two of the world's most popular touristdestinations, and for good reasons.

INDIA: EMPERORS AND EMPIREOn the land tour of the fabulousGolden Triangle in India the time ofthe Moghul emperors and the Age ofEmpire will grasp your attention. Thegreat monuments from these timesincluding the forts and palaces of Jaipur,Lutyen’s great monuments of the BritishRaj in Dehli and, of course, the TajMahal in Agra will inspire and delight. The magnificent sites of the IndianSubcontinent have been attractingtravellers for centuries but anotherAsian country that his home to equallymarvellous buildings, temples and

monuments has only recently begun to open up to visitors from the west.Burma, or Myanmar as it is nowknown, is rapidly becoming one of themost desired of destinations and withgood reason.

BURMA: A WORLD APART‘This is Burma’, wrote RudyardKipling. ‘It is quite unlike any placeyou know about.’ How right he was:more than a century later Myanmarremains a world apart. Visitors toBurma will discover a place where people are still attired in traditional

dress and that feels like a corner ofAsia that has changed little sinceBritish colonial times. It’s also a country of many incredible sites suchas the 4,000 sacred stupas (sacredBuddhist mounds) scattered across the plains of Bagan and the goldenShwedagon pagoda in Yangon, formerly Rangoon. This is a trulyremarkable place where holy men arestill revered and western technologyhas yet to dominate. It is these great buildings and monuments that have captivated visitors to Asia for centuries.

TAJ MAHAL: THE GREATEST LOVE STORY

Shah Jahan was the son of Jehangir, the fourth Mughalemperor of India and the grandson of Akbar the Great. In1612 he married the Persian princess Mumtaz Mahal and onbecoming Emperor in 1628 bestowed his beloved wife withthe title of Mumtaz Mahal, "Jewel of the Palace." In 1631,Mumtaz Mahal died in childbirth and Shah Jahan promisedher that he would never remarry and would build the richest mausoleum ever seen over her grave. He proved tobe a man of his word and it took 22 years and the labourof 22,000 workers to construct the monument. When ShahJahan died in 1666, his body was placed in a tomb next tothe tomb of Mumtaz Mahal and this magnificent monumentcame to be known as "Taj Mahal." 7

Page 8: South Africa, India & Southeast Asia 2015/16 (UK)

TREASURES OF THE RED SEA The extraordinary achievements ofman from very different ages are thehighlights of this leg of the voyage. As the historian Paul Johnson tells us,the Egyptians “were the first people onearth to create a nation-state. This stateserved as the framework of a culture ofextraordinary strength, assurance anddurability which lasted for 3,000 yearsand which retained almost to the endits now unmistakable purity of style. In the Egypt of antiquity, state, religionand culture formed an indisputableunity.” The great legacy of this mostfascinating of cultures comes to life as

you visit Luxor – the ancient city ofThebes, with its vast temple complexand the pharaonic tombs of the Valleyof the Kings. As well as the city ofPetra, Jordan is home to some of themost extensive and well-preservedGraeco-Roman ruins at Jerash.

TRANSIT THE SUEZ CANAL And then there is the more modernmarvel of the Suez Canal. Opened in November 1869 after 10 years of construction, the 120-mile long canalallows ships to travel between Europeand Asia without navigating around

fascinating history and cultures

THE LAND OF WHALEBONES AND SHIPWRECKS

The Skeleton Coast is the northern part of the Atlantic coast of Namibia and South Angola. The Bushmen of the Namibian interior called the region "The Land God Made in Anger", whilePortuguese sailors once referred to it as "The Gates of Hell". The name “Skeleton Coast” wascoined by John Henry Marsh as the title for the book he wrote chronicling the shipwreck of the British cargo liner Dunedin Star that ranaground here in November 1942. Since the bookwas first published in 1944 it has become so well known that the coast is now generallyreferred to as the Skeleton Coast and is giventhat as its official name on most maps today.8

Page 9: South Africa, India & Southeast Asia 2015/16 (UK)

Africa and thereby reducing the seavoyage distance between Europe andIndia by about 4,300 miles. Today, sailing through the Suez is an awe-inspiring experience and our transit of the canal will be through thedaytime hours – one of the world’sgreatest travel adventures.

CLASSICAL CIVILISATIONS OF THEMEDITERRANEAN AND AEGEANWith over 6,000 miles of coastline surrounding relatively tranquil seas, with numerous natural harbours andhundreds of habitable islands, theMediterranean and Aegean provide theperfect environment for the evolution

of complex patterns of trade and the communication of ideas. Theseconditions led to an unparalled explosion of human creativity and the birth of the great civilisations of antiquity. It is the legacy of these great culturesthat you will explore as Aegean Odyssyreaches the final leg of its winter programme. Highlights include the fantastic Graeco-Roman cities ofEphesus and Aphrodisias in Turkey, the elegance of the ruins on the sacredisland of Delos and, as a marvelloustreat to conclude this special voyage, the breathtaking spectacle of theAcropolis in Athens.

THE BENEFITS OF SMALL-SHIP CRUISING

voyages to antiquity ~

CELEBRATED GUEST SPEAKERS ON BOARD

The guest speakers who accompanyyou on the cruise are all first class. They have been carefully selected for their knowledge of the areas andtheir ability to bring to life the historyof the remarkable civilisations and cultures of the regions we visit.

Among those who will be joining us are David Price-Williams, and expert on Africa; Robert Gordon, retiredAmbassador to Burma; and DeniseHeywood who specialises in the art and culture of Southeast Asia.

Assisting the main speakers aboardship and on land will be our team of young and keen classical historygraduates. They will be on hand toanswer your questions and assist theguides on sightseeing trips.

In contrast to the massive vessels cruising to and from the major ports of the world's seas, we have a smallship adapted for island and coastalcruising. This means that AegeanOdyssey can visit less crowded harboursand sail closer to the coast enablingyou to appreciate the magical views.Another benefit of our ship’s size isthat it is able to navigate river passagesand this allows us to berth right in the heart of Yangon (Rangoon) inBurma. As we carry only an average of 350 passengers, our ship is ideal for those who do not enjoy travelling around with hordes of people. Its public spaces are ideal for socialising and enjoying intimate cocktail parties and events. If you like to wander around beautiful islands and explore ancient sites that are inaccessible to others, then Aegean Odyssey is the ideal ship for you.

Page 25: South Africa, India & Southeast Asia 2015/16 (UK)

It is this personal approach that ourguests remember and value mosthighly. But don’t just take our wordfor it, here is what recent travellersaboard Aegean Odyssey had to say.

Just a few comments from previous guestssteward saw to my every need, the cruise coordinator organised a dinner celebration for my birthday. Everythingwas just LOVELY!!” R.S. - USA

“I chose this cruise because the itinerary was just a little bit differentfrom the other companies I’ve looked at.It gave passengers the opportunity go toplaces and do things you couldn’t do with the other cruise lines.I would certainly recommend Voyages toAntiquity – it’s a bit intellectual, withsome fun, relaxation, good food andamazing people. The scenery has beenstunning and the places – without doubtI would recommend it.” M.M. - UK

“I have recently returned and feel disposed to write and congratulate allconcerned in providing me with a trulymemorable experience. I was a singlepassenger taking my first cruise, and canhonestly say that I could not find even thesmallest fault with the whole experience.

“You don’t need to be a history buff –anyone with an interest in culture willenjoy this cruise. In a way it inspires youto learn more and delve deeper into theplaces we have visited. The ship is such anice size – not too big and very informal. You really get to know people and it’s adelightful atmosphere.” P.M. - UK

“Everyone from the Captain, crew, cruiseorganiser, front office personel, cabin staff and beverage staff were extremelyfriendly and very helpful. They are a credit to your organisation and you canbe proud of them – they are doing a great job!” G.B. - Australia

“The voyage was a wonderful experienceand the best way for me to celebrate my 70th birthday. From my initial dealings with the booking office, to theorganised tours of the various sites, to thepassengers and crew everything was perfect. The crew was most solicitous –the maître’d made certain that I had a quiet table each evening, the cabin

The ship, its facilities, the food on board, all the crew and the excursions within the10 day itinerary were better than I daredto expect, and speaking to fellow passengers who were often well experienced in cruising, they too werepleasantly surprised at the high standards attained throughout. My onlycomplaint is that you have of coursespoiled me for any cruise other than withyour Company, and I look forward to joining you again.” G. G. B. MBE - UK

“The ship was absolutely marvellous, thecrew outstanding, accommodation food, service, entertainment all first class, and interesting Guest Speakers made it awonderful cruise.” B.W. - Australia

“WOW! Wonderful in every way! I cameby myself, but never felt alone. The shipwas very comfortable and easy to getaround. The shore excursions far exceededmy expectations! I look forward to another adventure on this intimate ship.”

CHURCHILL IN MARRAKESH

Marrakesh held a special place in Winston Churchill’s heart and he once described the Moroccan city as “simply thenicest place on Earth to spend an afternoon.” Churchill firstvisited Marrakesh in the Thirties when he spent the winter of1935 painting what he called “the Paris of the Sahara.” Sotaken was he with the place that, during a vital conferencewith Franklin D Roosevelt in Casablanca in 1943, Churchillbroke off discussions in order to show the American President his favourite city. After the war, Churchill often visited and usually stayed at Marrakesh’s most famous hotel,La Mamounia.

CAPE TOWN: SOUTH AFRICA’S“MOTHER CITY”The great naturalist Charles Darwin was somoved by the time he spent in Cape Townthat he was moved to write to his sister:“This is a pretty and singular town; it liesat the foot of an enormous wall (the TableMountain), which reaches into the clouds, and makes a most imposing barrier. CapeTown is a great inn, on the great highwayto the east.” Your visit to this fabulous city will, we hope, do justice to his words. The beauty of Cape Town’s location willcertainly make an impression when youtake the cable car up Table Mountain andget a breathtaking panoramic view of itssituation. Your visit also offers the chanceof a trip to infamous Robben Island or avisit to a winery in the Stellenbosch Valley, and time to enjoy this wonderful place.

MOSSEL BAY AND THE GARDEN ROUTEThe ancient forests, craggy peaks coveredin flowering scrub called fynbos, and thedesert-like landscape combine to createone of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world, the Garden Route.Your journey takes you into the OuteniquaMountains and to Oudtshoorn, a town set in an oasis-like valley. The opulent architecture of Oudtshoorn is testament tothe Ostrich Feather Boom that was fuelledby the demand for feathers for women’sclothing which ran from 1860-1914.

SAVING THE WHITE RHINO

Saving the white rhinos from extinction is one of the greatest success stories in conservation history. In the early 1890s therewere only about 20 white rhino left in the world, all of them existing in Hluhluwe. Today, there are over 1,600 in the reserve and many others have been relocated throughout the world. As the home of Operation Rhino in the 1950s and 60s, the Park became world-renowned for its white rhino conservation. The success of this programme has recently been compromised by the increase in rhino poaching within the park. This recentthreat has not only become a great concern for the park, but for rhino conservationists countrywide.
