Fossil Fuels
Coal, oil and Natural gas. Made from remains of ancient plants and
animals. This is why they are called fossil fuels.
Most commonly used energy source in the world.
There are pros and cons to using them. They are burned to create steam. The high
pressured steam is passed through pipes and used to spin a turbine. The turbine spins a generator and creates an electric current.

Pros and Cons of Fossil fuels
Easy to get now Does the job well
of creating energy All of our cars and
factories are equipped to run on fossil fuels.
Cause pollution Lead to global
warming Will run out
someday/non-renewable
Much of the world’s oil is in middle east countries.
Pros Cons

Other Alternatives…
Renewable and alternative energies. Using natural resources to create electricity. Most are cleaner and safer than fossil fuels.
Solar Wind Geothermal Hydroelectric Nuclear Biomass

Renewable vs. Alternative
Solar Hydroelectric Wind Biomass Geothermal
Nuclear energy
Renewable – Never run outAlternative – efficient but can run out

Solar Power
Capturing the sun’s energy to fuel a power plant to create electricity
Turning the sun’s energy directly into electric energy using solar cells.

Wind Energy
Using wind turbines to harness the wind’s energy.
The wind turbines turn a generator which creates electricity.

Hydroelectric Energy
Using the energy of moving water to turn turbines and create electricity.

Geothermal Energy
Using the natural heat and steam from inside the earth to spin a turbine to create electricity.
Geothermal Pictures

Nuclear Energy
Using the energy from inside of an atom to create heat.
The heat will make steam to spin a turbine and create electricity.
Nuclear Pictures

Biomass Energy
Burning of trash, crops or other “living” material.
The burning will create steam which will turn a turbine to create electricity.

ONE ALTERNATIVE….BIOMASSThe rest of this presentation will explain Biomass Energy.
Biomass Energy is just one of the possible solutions to our Energy problem.
![Page 13: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
BIOMASS ENERGY
![Page 14: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
DEFINITION OF BIOMASS ENERGY
BIOMASS ENERGY IS THE USE OF LIVING MATERIAL TO CREATE ELECTRICITY
SOME MATERIALS USED COULD BE PLANTS, GARBAGE, AND ANIMAL WASTE
![Page 15: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
![Page 16: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
HOW IT WORKS...
PLANTS ARE BURNED IN ORDER TO CREATE ENOUGH HEAT TO BOIL WATER.
THE WATER IS TURNED INTO STEAM THE STEAM WILL CREATE ENOUGH
POWER TO SPIN A TURBINE
![Page 17: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
HOW IT WORKS...
THE TURBINE IS CONNECTED TO A GENERATOR
WHEN THE GENERATOR SPINS IT CREATES AN ELECTRIC CURRENT
THE ELECTRIC CURRENT IS SENT THROUGH POWER LINES TO HOMES AND BUSINESSES
![Page 18: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
ADVANTAGES
BIOMASS ENERGY WILL NEVER RUN OUT
IT DOES NOT ADD TO AIR POLLUTION
WHEN WE GROW PLANTS FOR BIOMASS ENERGY IT HELPS CLEAN THE AIR
![Page 19: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
ADVANTAGES CONT...
USING GARBAGE FOR ENERGY WILL HELP REDUCE LANDFILLS
![Page 20: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
DISADVANTAGES
COLLECTING ENOUGH WASTE FOR BIO-POWER COULD BE HARD
BIOMASS MATERIALS BURN FASTER THAN OIL AND COAL SO MORE WOULD BE NEEDED
THE LAND THAT IS NEEDED FOR CREATING BIOMASS CROPS IS BEING USED FOR FOOD PRODUCTION
![Page 21: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
MY CONCLUSION
I BELIEVE THAT BIOMASS IS A VERY GOOD SOURCE OF ENERGY FOR OUR FUTURE.
THE ONLY DOWNFALL SEEMS TO BE COLLECTING ENOUGH WASTE FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION
I THINK THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGES ARE THAT IT COULD REDUCE TRASH IN LANDFILLS AND THAT WE CAN GROW IT HERE IN OUR COUNTRY.
![Page 22: Sources of energy](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051323/54b575df4a795968568b45ea/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
CONCLUSION
THE BIGGEST BENEFIT WOULD BE THAT WE CAN ELIMINATE GARBAGE AND OTHER WASTE WHILE CREATING CLEAN ENERGY AT THE SAME TIME
THE ADVATAGES FAR OUTNUMBER THE DISADVANTAGES FOR BIO-POWER

Your turn!
Your group will choose an alternative or renewable energy.
You will research how it works and the advantage and disadvantaged of using the source you chose.
You will create a Power Point presentation to report your findings to the class!
